I am not an IITian, nor a mechanical engineer, but this type of videos really help us get to know about IITs from the viewpoint of a professor. Really great content, sir!
I hope the MTech students learn to communicate like you, professor. I hope they take up extra responsibilities, excel in their careers and contribute back to the society, just the way you are doing.
You are so humble & down to earth professor who though belongs to one of the most strict & reputed IIT, interacts with below students like most of us.....🙏❤️. Here our so called professors doesn't guide us properly.😭....IIT students are really so lucky......
IIT students are not lucky, they worked hard to get into those IITs and now they get such brilliant professors which they deserve for all that hardwork
i was just hovering over youtube and found your video. As the playtime of the video increased, the respect for you also increased in our heart. I am really thankful to you for your advice, motivation, and guidance. Thankyou sir
12:20 often people downplay gate achievement saying that the real iitian is the one who studies UG here. This coming from sir himself clear this misconception. Thank you very much!🙏
IITs and NITs are primarily UG engineering colleges. I have graduated from IISc, and thankfully, there is absolutely no issue with UG/PG interaction dynamics. For IISc, research is supreme, among the student fraternity, those pursuing PhDs are the "kings" - if I may use that term.
Dear Sir , I joined Masters program at IIT Madras this year in July 2021. I am from B-Tech in EEE and that too from a private university. I can absolutely relate to your discussion regarding interaction with UGs. Initially I was very shy and kind of awkward especially when I came to know that I will be competing with the BTech & Dual Degree students in my courses. But as I started interacting with them, things got little better and I got to learn many things frm them .
@@ShubhamKumar-bs1ss as far as i know... There not such cgpa criteria for doing research. I know there is the fact that u have to maintain a cgpa of 7-8, but the most important aspect is that u have to interact or constantly keep in touch with the professors under whom u want to puruse ur research work in. Even if u have lower cgpa than the required (under any circumstances), if u are in good eyes of the professors, u have the chance to progress!! Cheers!! I guess it was helpful!
I agree completely with all the valuable points you've discussed in this video. I really wish someone told me these words even a week back when I started to feel the heat and was getting slowly down with confidence in some subjects, while pursuing the 1st sem of M.E at JU which I started with the wish to explore all the answers to my queries, thoughts that I earlier had in my undergrads. I feel much positive now, that what I felt over the last couple of weeks isn't uncommon. I guess and really hope this covid stuff goes away and I can dive deep into the tides of Master's, keeping aside the online domain all the time. Thank you Sir. Thanks to RUclips Algorithm also, otherwise this wonderful video wouldn't have came up on my feed.
Sir, big respect to you. My comment is long. Please be patient with me. _My background_ : I did my BTech graduation in mechanical engg from a govt college then came below 1500 rank in GATE Mechanical and got admission in IIT (one of the top 7 IITs of course ). Yes it is true I attempted GATE with focus on PSU jobs (middle class dilemma) but higher studies was also on the radar. I finally got a job in a non-core sector with a decent package but the motivation for higher studies died with the IIT experience I had. _My IIT experience_ : The moment I got into the course work the image of IIT which I had, all shattered. I discovered all the course work in IIT is nothing fancier than what we did in our college (to be precise , in a tier 2 college ). The main burning came in the final year. In the thesis work, I noticed most of the students in MTech are involved in a thesis work which has already been done by some other PhD students or their previous MTech students. There was no originality in thinking. Most of the work is run of the mill type rustic research papers with no industrial application or with economic viability. It seems the thesis work is being done by the students-professors because it has to be completed. There was no motivation to work on original thinking in the IIT. To my despair, I also found most of the professors are not helping the students at all. Students learn from the PhD seniors or by themselves. Professors usually take follow-up meetings every couple of weeks or one every month. In many cases students approach prof for help or to learn but they get nothing. I personally had experience of no help from prof (guide and co guide), many of my friends got no help as well. Actually if they get any help they get this from their lab seniors (PhD students who came from other colleges/NITs/new IITs). Many of my friends in my MTech batch will never turn towards PhD as we witnessed how pathetic the PhD situation is there in the top IITs itself. I have friends in PhD, MTech in other top IITs too. The culture is more or less the same. MTech/MS/PhD is like a self help type of 2/3/5 year curriculum. I believe there is no value addition to me (or any one passing from IITs) in technical knowledge because of studying at IIT. Only the tag of IIT helped me to get a job. At present there is lots of content education (even for the masters level) available on the internet which makes IITs redundant. _Solution_ : I believe you are active in the youtube space to assess the system better from the perspective of the student community and want to change it the best way possible. I'd like to suggest that you write a petition to the concerned ministry to pass a bill (or something like that) so that more and more private collaborations are done in thesis and PhD projects. Only a result oriented, for profit R&D activity will make the system excel. Many of my friends/seniors had way low GATE rank, to be qualified into an IIT. But they pursued higher studies abroad. They are in a better position in core MNCs now, where masters from top IIT will hardly get the chance. Here in India we are creating more and more competition (JEE/GATE etc etc) but the final product is nearly garbage !

Thanks for sharing your experiences. However, I have had different experiences. Note that after completing my Dual Degree I completed my PhD at IIT Kharagpur itself. This brought me in close contact with the PhD student community. Right now I am supervising PhD students. So I have the perspective from both sides. And I can say with confidence that it is very much possible to do very good quality PhD work from India that is appreciated globally. Of course there are going to be challenges. Regarding supervision, in any kind of research work, the main impetus and drive has to come from the student himself. The supervisor is not there to hand hold the students rather to share ideas, give pointers, and take difficult calls on the overall direction of the research. Above all, it is to mentor his students so that they can become full-fledged independent researchers themselves. And, I sm sorry that you had the experience contrary to all this but trust me, such kind of mentorship does exist. But at the end of the day, the onus is on the student. And, trust me also when I say this, sll the top PhD candidates at top universities abroad display this all-important trait of being fiercely independent early on.
Yeah be independent...😅 what about only 31k or 35k offered to students no increaments if I am not wrong.... What about around 15k also you have to pay...... What about you have to take care of your family in that money??? What about devolped nations also have free education. And good stifend....and you can do part time jobs of good wages... Do our parents give us that independent way lifestyle??... Is financial stability is not an issue tell me?? The way prices of things going high... The age when a person completing his/her phd don't u think indian parents demands are different... Yeah be independent.... Then provide me some financial stability......and also provide some girls in mechanical department... Because Tinder doesn't work in campus girls/boys ratio is less.....ok for one sec I will say no I will give sacrifice all things and put my energy and time into it... But after phd again discrimination... I am not doing this gambling 🤣...
@@varunvirat7327 Some very good points. What I meant about Independence was academic Independence after one has joined PhD. However, at the time a student is considering starting on a PhD I always make this clear that if there are financial constraints in the family then starting a PhD is not a good idea. And, all developed nations do not have free education (students in the US are under great debt due to high fees).
Hearing you on such issues is always a pleasure. Please make a video on the integrated masters programmes (BTech +MTech) and how the students of these programmes should approach their studies and preparation for the future.
Thank you for the kind words. The Dual Degree programme in large parts is not much different from the B.Tech programme except possibly the 4th and 5th years. So, the advice given to B.Tech students and also to the M.Tech students apply to the Dual Degree students. If I do think of some substantial points which can help the Dual Degree students in a dedicated way, I will make a video.
Thank you, Sir, I am an IIT Madras MS student in Aerospace propulsion and chose this field with pure interest. But I was through this dilemma of how to study these MTech/MS courses since it was my first semester. Later I started to worry less about grades and reminded myself that I am here because I like these subjects and not to study for grades only, my guide also mentored me and helped me. I am sure your tips are going to help me
Hi bro 🙋. I am currently doing my bachelor's in electrical engineering and i am planning to do masters in aerospace engineering. I don't know much about masters. So can you give some tips about what kind of area of study i have to choose and what are technical related stuffs I have to do before joining mtech ??
@@mrchan1735 It's difficult to talk here 😅. I suggest you go through yourpedia channels videos which will guide you a lot. As you said you are in Electrical engineering, most of EE students choose Flight Dynamics and Controls. I suggest you to talk to individual professors too and to visit IITs websites
This is genuinely a great video for the mtech level students and surely gives a lot of motivation. Sir, a request from my side, a video about "developing a research orientation mentality for higher studies and academic research."
I've joined one of the new IIT, Thank you so much sir for taking out your precious time and making such a video..I will surely keep everything in mind for comming sems.
I am glad that I watched this before takinadmission in M.Tech. at an IIT. Thank you Sir for your guidance, your videos are very insightful. I just hope I make the most of the next 2 years that I will have in an IIT, most probably at kharagpur only.
It's really great to see you address such crucial and sensitive issues, sir. Highly appreciate it!! Sir, please make a dedicated video for MS(research) students as well. There's little to no knowledge of what goes on in the MS courses in IITs and what's expected of them and what opportunities lays for them in the future. How's MS different from MTech, the pros and cons. The reason I'm requesting this information is that most of the students opting for these courses have got "low gate scores" which is why they tend to undermine the potential of MS by research courses. Please help us realize its true potential.
Sir , I would like to request you to make a video on the research scenario in India. How does the premier institutions in India such as the TIFR, IISc, IITs etc stand with respect to the several US universities in respect of the research environment, PhD experience, etc. Many faculty members in IITs (what I have seen so far) have done their PhD or Post Doc in foreign universities mostly in the US. Is it a rarity these days people who are educated purely in India ending up to become a faculty member in premier institutions in India (such as IISc, IITs and TIFR)? You are definitely having a better idea and first hand experience about these aspects. It would be great if you can give us a clear idea about the current scenario. Also take us through your educational experience in the UK. Thank You
👍 Good idea for another video... Just as Prof. has mentioned that MTechs may face an "Inferiority Complex" vis-a-vis' BTechs, similarly as you have pointed out many PhD research scholars from India, including those from IITs and other NIRF ranked universities, often feel inadequate and insecure vis-a-vis' foreign PhDs from top ranked international universities. It will be a valuable resource if Prof. jc creates a PLAYLIST on RUclips with a series of videos which address the various dilemmas which PhD research scholars in India face, such as: - Deciding whether to pursue a PhD or take up an IT services or core sector job after BE/ BTech/ MTech? - Choosing a PhD Research area, topic and supervisor? - Dealing with expectations of the PhD Guide/ Advisor and Committee? - Coping with rejection of papers submitted to conferences and journals? - Deciding whether to pursue Post-Doc in a foreign university with a hope of getting selected as Faculty in an IIT, vis-a-vis joining as Faculty in a tier Institute immediately after PhD?
Thank you so much sir for this video, I've completed my B.Tech in a private engineering college and currently doing M.Tech (6-semester, Non-GATE) at Jadavpur University. Will be following your advice while doing my coursework in the next semester as I was searching ideas on what to do in the M.Tech thesis.
Respected sir, I have a bachelor's and a master's degree. I put all my efforts and somehow I managed to get into NIT for masters after GATE. Never got any guidance and again the same thing happened, my time got wasted. Tried to Learn new things myself during COVID but the frustration has made me to decide not to opt for PhD. I am grateful that atleast I have a job but my salary is 20000. I stay alone and I keep thinking that all these efforts over the years for this. No value No money .... I am a Fea engineer now but I am demotivated to study anymore or any brainstorming for this because I am not getting anything in return. At this point, I hope someone could guide me and tell me what to do . I have a family and I have responsibilities but it brings tears in my eyes when I realize that I can't fullfill dreams of the people I love and I can never earn good anymore I wish I had not made promises to my mother when I was a small kid These things are very difficult to share too. Just putting a fake smile everyday but deep down I am dead. My friends who chose to do MBA are in better position now. I loved mechanical engineering but I was wrong.
I know of someone a couple of years junior to me who did not do any engineering studies and at the very beginning of his career faced quite a lot of hardships even physical ones. But he kept at it tenaciously, and now he is one of the most valued employees in that company ... rising fast with healthy boosts in salary at regular intervals. So, just because you are starting in a small way doesn't mean that you will be stuck there for life. Please try to renew your enthusiasm a bit ... I know it is much easier said than done especially when you have to face the day to day hardships. But it will get better. If you give up now, it won't.
@jc sir , Thankyou very much for your efforts and your kind words. Each and every word in the video is true and pure gem. This shows how well you can connect to your students. Teachers like you are a blessing to this world. Thank you again for lifting my spirits 🙂
I am seriously considering making such a video. However, most of my experiences are with Mechanical Engineering, I think I will probably end up giving it such a flavour.
👍 Kindly make a similar video with Advise for PhD students (or "Research Scholars" as they are called in India!)... Covering the concerns of both prospective and currently enrolled PhD students... Please address diplomatically but head-on the "uncomfortable" issues which research scholars often face with their PhD Guide/ Advisor.... How can research scholars cope/ deal with issues of incompatibility with their PhD Guide/ Advisor in terms of beliefs and attitudes towards research and publishing/ working styles/ etc... Just as a PhD is of longer duration than an MTech, it will be good if the video could be proportionately longer... TIA and looking forward.
This is not just great information, this is actually learnings, experiences and outstanding efforts made by you sir so as we can get some of the great insights into the wonderful curriculum.Thank you very much sir for sharing this info, and keep making videos like this.❤️❤️
With due respect, I would like to list out a few of the key points from the perspective of a master student that why a master student is not interested to make a career in academics and do a Ph.D. and is less interested in courses taught in m.tech. 1. Many professors create a toxic work environment by not behaving maturely with research scholars (i am including top IITs). These things they witness in their MTech itself. So such professors are a big motivating factor for not doing a Ph.D. 2. A Ph.D. student is not well paid (as compared to what M.tech students get in companies), so most middle-class family students opt out of research work. 3. Lack of collaborative research at IITs/NITs. (mainly due to ego problems among professors). A research student will feel more confident working under a group/research lab with guidance from a number of people. I am telling these things as I am a part of the system at one of the top IITs. Sir, what you are telling me is the correct way of doing M.tech if you want to be a good researcher. But, I feel that the question is why an M.tech student would like to continue in academics than work in a company of his/her choice with a good salary and growth.
Hello Sir I've just joined the KGP family I request you to make a short video if possible about how to listen and attend lecture (offline/online , anything) and retain it efficiently Please it would be really helpful thank you really like your videos and your crisp explanation
@@adityasinghdabas7868 Yes, I had noticed that. But I thought perhaps you had written some script to programmatically keep track of certain channels by automatically pulling this sort of data.
I am seriously considering making a video sharing some of my own experiences as a PhD student at IIT Kharagpur ... nothing personal ... just some general ideas which I think can help students who are doing their PhD currently at the various IITs. But I don't know if it is going to be the next video!
Sir You are doing a great duty by inspiring the young minds to tackle their educational & career issues at same time young must realise that education is training their body & mind with relevant skills for good work required by the society at same time catering to your life & day today aspirations yet no training is an end in itself , changing societies & industries will always throw new challenges & the present rigourous training will work as a stepping stone to learn new ones as per future requirements Thankyou so much Sir regards👍
I did my M Tech in Comp Sc and Engg from IITG recently and what i think as 1. The Masters course must be specialized, not generic. From a comp sc point of view, the masters degree should be on networking, databases, security, os, etc. rather than on comp sc and engg. 2. There must be more elective than compulsory subjects. 3. Assignments must be relevant. 4. More focus on learning than doing assignments, quizes, etc. for grade!!!
Hello Sir. It is really encouraging and if I may say assuring to see people like you creating contents. I do not come from STEM background. I have been a student of humanities and have worked in consumer research. Yet I listen to your videos. It is an absolute pleasure to get perspectives from you. Thank you.
@@Prof_JC You might want to cover topics which are more generic. Like topics pertaining to PhD - it's pros and cons, scope, reason for pursuing, etc. I am sure a lot of non STEM background viewers would be interested and get benefited. Thanks.
I'm a PG student of NIT TRICHY in Civil Engineering department. This video is really helpful. Thank you Sir to clear all the conflicts too... One request Sir, if possible please make a video on e-resources that available in e-library of this IITs n NITs , how to utilise it utmost way as we are in online mode.
Every institute has its own specific system. I think it will be better if you explore the webpage of your library of NIT Trichy. Or, even better, once you get to the campus (assuming you are still in online mode), visit the library and talk to the people in-charge there. You cannot imagine how happy they become when they find a student of this generation taking active interest in exploring the resources that they work so hard to maintain.
Sure Sir, I will definitely contact them as a student of Private Engineering college, never get that opportunities to explore a good library. Hope this time I explore it well and use it to utmost way.

THANKS Sir. You have wonderfully explained everything. I am also a Sponsored PhD student at IIT. I did my engineering from NIT. These institutions provide ample opportunities for quality research. I have gone through some of the comments from people who perhaps only know how to criticise system. Felt sorry for them.
Thank you for the kind comment. I think some wise people have said rightly that if what you said or did never elicited a negative reaction, then probably what you said or did was not worth much.
Professor i am physics department masters student here at KGP . I am writing this comment to just let you know my experience. Currently in this winter break i am reading all those stuff which i were supposed to read during my last sem. But what i have experienced is, the same things which were like completely out of this world for me during those days now i am getting them clearly. I can assure you this is not because i am try to work through them from a long enough time and now i am getting those concepts, no it is surely not the case. It is just happening i am now more relaxed and enjoying the learning process more and more. You talk only real experiences of students so i thought i should share this with you.
Thanks sir for your precious advice I will remember every word of it during my master's Well i will be joining iit kgp this year in mtech cse hope to meet u and gain more advices on how to make my stay at iit more fruitful
Sir - There is no point in saying "please, please...." do so and so. You are devaluing the point and frankly yourself. Just make your point and hope that the best student will pick it up.
Thank you for the candid comment. But everyone has a natural way of speaking, and that's how I speak in real life. I could if I try speak in a very sanitized, stilted fashion but I feel that ironically that's how I will end up making the message insincere because that's just not me. Sorry to disappoint you.
I am preparing for GATE this year, not because I need a PSU job or admission to any IIT, but I just wanted to check on the list of really excelling in a competitive exam, which I failed to do in 10+2. Well at least that was my motivation until November when I bought a GATE question bank, picked up the chapter on the deflection of beams, took "10 mins" to solve "one" question on simply supported beam with UDL, and when I came up with that (5WL^4/384EI), I was like I have to remember this? Seriously? My eyes widened, as I looked at the thickness of the book, with 20+ subjects (courses) with god knows how many more formulas to keep in mind. It also surfaced the fact that how the 4-5 years of IIT has rusted our quick problem-solving skills, how the use of calculators has made us so dependent to check even the basic arithmetic/trigonometric results, and how the lack of academic competitive vibes (debatable whether necessary or not) in the campus has reduced our zeal to perform up to our potentials. (I should also mention that they can completely get back to that JEE Mode if the size of the prize is appealing enough, e.g., Placements!) Having been in courses with the GATE-qualifiers and speaking in general, I can indeed testify that they are much more serious, motivated, and polished than the dual degree students, no matter what the results may say. Kudos to them! P.S: I love how you have passionately turned down the phone receiver while recording this, hope the viewers also get to know about your poetry some time! :D
As always, it is a pleasure to read through your very, very coherently written thoughts. I also appreciate how, as one of our top Dual Degree students, you have developed a proper respect for the GATE-qualified M.Tech students who are definitely much better prepared than others in terms of the important problem set ups. In the old curriculum (of which you were a part), we had given more emphasis towards the kind of problem solving (at least in Mechanics of Solids) which was perhaps a bit more oriented towards a research career ... and that is not well suited for the majority of the students. The new curriculum Mechanics of Solids has been made significantly more in sync with the global standards that prepares for a professional engineering career. The hope is that an academically serious student, having gone through this curriculum would need less than "ten minutes" for "one problem"! :) And, I know there could be serious arguments both for and against this sort of curriculum revision because we have already gone through those passionately last year. Ah, someone noticed the phone receiver (had forgotten to put it down in my earlier videos). And, where did you see the poems?
Dear sir, In 2018, if you could put in questionnaires and take interviews for picking up suitable candidates for projects, a little research from our side should be expected too right? I had read your pieces back then and was amused to see "professors" having such hobbies too (well back then it was something totally new for me :p)!
Sir deliberately chose my home state NIT for M.TECH and not any IIT which I could have solely because I aspire someday I would get the opportunity to work in the state engineering department in my own state for which I am preparing. Sir anything about me? And I am really thankful sir to you for this amazing interaction about misconceptions with us .
Sir, I am from rural area in Bihar. I was preparing for JEE Mains and Advanced from Patna but due lockdown and curfew I had to move to my native town and I suffered a lot in doing classes due to Internet disruption. In June 2021, I lost my brother to Covid and three of my family members were infected. After that I lost my mental and emotional stability totally. It took me 1.5 months to continue my preparation. In Septemper I was infected and admitted to hospital. Due to there horrific and severe factors in the pandemic, my preparation was hampered to extreme extent. I still appeared in JEE Advanced but unfortunately I qualified but couldn't get a seat in IIT. If I would have not faced these problems then I would have definitely got a seat in IIT. We students of 2020 boards passout are requesting for more than 2 months now to give u a fair Third attempt. We many representations to the IITs and authorities but nothing has come till now. We are highly tensed and stressed due to this uncertainty...Please help us and give us a third attempt in JEE Advanced 2022 so we could perform to our fullest potential.. 😭😭😭🙏🙏🙏...We beg to the authorities..Please give us just one fair attempt... 😭😭🙏🙏 #JEEAdvancedExtraAttempt
First of all I want to thank you for making such great videos related to academics. Sir I will request you to make a video on how to prepare for GATE. Specially with such a high demand in IT industries students are losing interest in core subjects. Moreover students who are wanting to pursue a career in the core industry and trying to focus on GATE, are getting deviated often by the lucrative offers of IT industry and surroundings. So how to keep oneself motivated in such case to carry on the studies of GATE?
Respected Sir, Thank you it is really helpful. Sir can you make a guidance video for Mtech students in IITs especially for research because most the Mtech students in IITs don't have any research background So it will be very helpful. Thank you sir
Sir, please also make a video on 'things an U.G. student should keep in mind from first year if one wants to go in 'Academia' field (e.g. a professor in iits just like you)'..maybe some basic info like one has to do PhD to be a professor at iits,etc..or anything specific you feel is important to be considered (i am not very sure about this but still exploring 😅).
Professor, please share your thoughts on doing MS ( Mechatronics) in Germany (TUHH) after UG( Mechanical) Studies from Tier 3 Institute (Finolex Academy of Management Technology)
Please make one for MS students in mechanical engeering too. Different fields and research areas, would love your knowledge about it. Please share them, I have requested it multiple times sir.
@@Prof_JC Alright sir. Atleast if you can share what the different research areas and fields which are interesting for mechanical engineers, it would be a lot helpful. @@Prof_JC Please do it sir, I'll wait for it. Love your videos sir. I really enjoy the way you speak and gain a lot of knowledge from it. Thanks for taking out time and making these videos!
Thank heavens, you said "Give the GATE paper to a 4th year UG. Do you think they'd be able to get 98-99 percentile without preparation?". And did not say "Give the GATE paper to your professor ... "
Sorry for the extremely late reply. If you don't mind me asking, are you a prof. at IIT Delhi? With regards to that remark, believe it or not, "Give the GATE paper to your professor" was at my tongue tip. But then wiser(?) sense prevailed, and I refrained from saying it! :)
@@madcapprof Dear Prof. Sivaramakrishnan, Great to see you here. And, thanks for stopping by to comment! I really liked your website and the dedicated page on report/thesis writing you have there.
Dear prof. Jc, First of all loved your videos. I have done my UG from NIT Allahabad and doing my masters from IIT hyderabad. As a piece of advice from you, I want to ask you that do you encourage your students to have a PHD abroad or within IIT's. I have a plan to be in academia, will it lower my chances or more importantly are IITs lacking the environment that the foreign counter parts have. Hoping to hear from you soon. Regards
(Sorry about the late reply to such a great question!) I myself did my PhD from IIT Kharagpur after completing my undergraduate at the same place. If you are interested in doing theoretical (mathematical modelling + simulation) kind of work then doing a PhD from the IITs or IISc is a very good idea. It will not lower your chances getting into academia. However, if you are interested in hardcore experimental work which involves specialty equipment then there are some logistical challenges to doing that kind of work (especially with the time constraints that are there during one's PhD tenure) in India. But at the same time, some established research groups are doing fabulous work in India on the experimental front too. The main thing that is seen when you are at the faculty application stage is your publication record together with your overall academic record. And, of course, how well you hold up to live scrutiny during their research presentation, teaching seminar, and interview. I have seen foreign-bred PhDs not being able to put up a satisfactory performance during their research presentation or giving a lackluster teaching seminar - they ended up not even being recommended for interview (note that the interview is the final stage of the faculty selection process).
Thank you for your guidance. Can you please make a video on what is the research output expected from a Mtech student and how can we develop that research endeavor? Since in Btech, I never thought from a research perspective but only for placements.
Sir, thank you so much for your esteemed advice. I graduated from Jadavpur University CE in 2021. For this 1 year, I have been working as a RA under an eminent professor in IIT-BHU. I wish to do a PhD from the top 50s. Would you recommend me going after GATE and joining an IIT and complete my masters, or should I spend a couple of years over here and do some quality work and then directly apply for a PhD ? Thank you.
not only now it is mandatory for iit students to mention they are IITIAN but even profs get views by putting IIT in title no hate just love great advice BTW
Huge respect to u sir..... For this gate preparation I can't able to attain any diploma level je exam. What should I do??? If I join IIT their will be any problem created for job interview due to low marks in 10 th?? Plz sir give me your sincere suggestion. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Sir I (Aero student) would humbly request your inputs on placement scenario of Master students from institutes like BIT where core companies don't even visit and we can't really qualify IT companies assessment tests for their recruitment coz they give emphasis to coding. What shall we do?

I don't know what to do in my career can you please help :( I heard that doing bsc msc Is waste as it doesn't teach you any real life skill. Why there is no such opportunity to choose subjects of our major according to our choice? Or is there any opportunity to persue both??

I am not an IITian, nor a mechanical engineer, but this type of videos really help us get to know about IITs from the viewpoint of a professor. Really great content, sir!
How was your GATE?what is your future plan?
I hope the MTech students learn to communicate like you, professor.
I hope they take up extra responsibilities, excel in their careers and contribute back to the society, just the way you are doing.
You are so humble & down to earth professor who though belongs to one of the most strict & reputed IIT, interacts with below students like most of us.....🙏❤️. Here our so called professors doesn't guide us properly.😭....IIT students are really so lucky......
Thank you for the kind words. And I am sorrow to hear about your situation. But I am sure there will be a few really good profs also.
IIT students are not lucky, they worked hard to get into those IITs and now they get such brilliant professors which they deserve for all that hardwork
Im actually doing a masters outside India, and your insights are indeed valuable. Thank you, for making these videos.
Thank you, and all the best!
How did u get admission in foreign universities?
i was just hovering over youtube and found your video. As the playtime of the video increased, the respect for you also increased in our heart. I am really thankful to you for your advice, motivation, and guidance. Thankyou sir
Thank you for the very kind words.
IISc is truly a great place, and a pride of India.
I myself being a m.tech student can correlate to you views. Your advices are very practical ❤️
Thank you.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Can you explain cgpa criteria needed for PhD at IITs....
All the best for the rest of the semesters!

Yeah be independent...😅
what about only 31k or 35k offered to students no increaments if I am not wrong....

Thank you a lot SirJi for having such a boosting session for people who qualified gate 💯💯💯
Sir
Please make a video all about MS(Research) course.
Highly recommended video for a MTech students. Thank you sir it is really helpful.

It will be a valuable resource if Prof. jc creates a PLAYLIST on RUclips with a series of videos which address the various dilemmas which PhD research scholars in India face, such as:
- Deciding whether to pursue a PhD or take up an IT services or core sector job after BE/ BTech/ MTech?
- Choosing a PhD Research area, topic and supervisor?
- Dealing with expectations of the PhD Guide/ Advisor and Committee?
- Coping with rejection of papers submitted to conferences and journals?
- Deciding whether to pursue Post-Doc in a foreign university with a hope of getting selected as Faculty in an IIT, vis-a-vis joining as Faculty in a tier Institute immediately after PhD?
Thank you for such a good set of suggestions. I will seriously think about it.
Thank you so much sir for this video,
I've completed my B.Tech in a private engineering college and currently doing M.Tech (6-semester, Non-GATE) at Jadavpur University. Will be following your advice while doing my coursework in the next semester as I was searching ideas on what to do in the M.Tech thesis.
Respected sir,
I have a bachelor's and a master's degree.
I have a family and I have responsibilities but it brings tears in my eyes when I realize that I can't fullfill dreams of the people I love and I can never earn good anymore
I wish I had not made promises to my mother when I was a small kid
These things are very difficult to share too.
@jc sir ,
Thankyou very much for your efforts and your kind words. Each and every word in the video is true and pure gem. This shows how well you can connect to your students. Teachers like you are a blessing to this world.

How can research scholars cope/ deal with issues of incompatibility with their PhD Guide/ Advisor in terms of beliefs and attitudes towards research and publishing/ working styles/ etc...
This is very heart touching video. I really like the message for m tech students. Thank you sir

I did my M Tech in Comp Sc and Engg from IITG recently and what i think as
Thanks for sharing. However, a more appropriate place to give this feedback would be to your actual professors.
Hello Sir. It is really encouraging and if I may say assuring to see people like you creating contents. I do not come from STEM background. @@Prof_JC You might want to cover topics which are more generic. Like topics pertaining to PhD - it's pros and cons, scope, reason for pursuing, etc. I am sure a lot of non STEM background viewers would be interested and get benefited. Thanks.

I have gone through some of the comments from people who perhaps only know how to criticise system. Felt sorry for them.

(I should also mention that they can completely get back to that JEE Mode if the size of the prize is appealing enough, e.g., Placements!)
Having been in courses with the GATE-qualifiers and speaking in general, I can indeed testify that they are much more serious, motivated, and polished than the dual degree students, no matter what the results may say.
Dear sir,
In 2018, if you could put in questionnaires and take interviews for picking up suitable candidates for projects, a little research from our side should be expected too right? I had read your pieces back then and was amused to see "professors" having such hobbies too (well back then it was something totally new for me :p)!
@@koustavchakraborty9099 Haha ... touche! Well ... those were written during my Dual Degree days!
Nice words.....Thanks Professor...
Thank you a lot Sir .!
These videos and the efforts from you help us a lot.
#JEEAdvancedExtraAttempt
No this does not happen stop for this
Thanks for your valuable advices.. 🙏
Nice sir ... I'm at ug final yr soon i will there in IIT as a pG 🥰✌️
Thankyou sir, for your precious advice. I feel more motivated.😎
Sir can you plz make a video on how to apply to research internships in IITs for Btech students .
Your videos are helping a lot. Thanks.
Thanks for talking about all the unspoken facts like inferiority complex, job sacrifice etc. I am an UG and I want to do mtech from kgp.
All the best!
Respected Sir, Thank you it is really helpful. Sir can you make a guidance video for Mtech students in IITs especially for research because most the Mtech students in IITs don't have any research background So it will be very helpful. Thank you sir
I am seriously considering making a video on that topic.
thank you so much indeed. I resonated with your words.
Thank you so much sir. It was needed. 🙏
Thank you sir for making such informative video...
Very good idea! :)
@@Prof_JC Thank you, Sir.
Professor, please share your thoughts on doing MS ( Mechatronics) in Germany (TUHH) after UG( Mechanical) Studies from Tier 3 Institute (Finolex Academy of Management Technology)
Thank you sir . Pls do make video about research work 😅. Any guidence would help.
Great👍
Please make one for MS students in mechanical engeering too. Different fields and research areas, would love your knowledge about it. Please share them, I have requested it multiple times sir.
Sorry, I don't have much experience with the MS program. It won't be right for me to give expert advice on it.
@@Prof_JC Alright sir. Atleast if you can share what the different research areas and fields which are interesting for mechanical engineers, it would be a lot helpful. You said it while reacting to your student's video that there quite interesting fields for masters in mechanical engineering abroad. Please make a video about it if possible, sir.
@@banterdude308 Yes, that can certainly be done!
@@Prof_JC Please do it sir, I'll wait for it. Love your videos sir. I really enjoy the way you speak and gain a lot of knowledge from it. Thanks for taking out time and making these videos!
Sir please make a video about communication.
Sir, can you make a similar video for MSc students. Especially Physics.
Sir make more lectures
Thank you sir for this great videos
Thank heavens, you said "Give the GATE paper to a 4th year UG. Do you think they'd be able to get 98-99 percentile without preparation?". And did not say "Give the GATE paper to your professor ... "
Sorry for the extremely late reply. If you don't mind me asking, are you a prof. at IIT Delhi? With regards to that remark, believe it or not, "Give the GATE paper to your professor" was at my tongue tip. But then wiser(?) sense prevailed, and I refrained from saying it! :)
@@Prof_JC Yes, Prof. JC. I am a faculty with EE department at IITD.
@@madcapprof Dear Prof. Sivaramakrishnan, Great to see you here. And, thanks for stopping by to comment! I really liked your website and the dedicated page on report/thesis writing you have there.
Sir your videos are really good, especially the video on project presentation.
Thank you!
New video. IIT professors advice to people looking at IIT professors advice on RUclips.
Dear prof. Jc,
First of all loved your videos.
@@Prof_JC thank you prof. for a more detailed response. Hoping to meet you soon some day.
Regards
thank you sir very valuable experience
Glad to hear your voice again sir 🙂
Long time!
Thank you for your guidance. Can you please make a video on what is the research output expected from a Mtech student and how can we develop that research endeavor? Since in Btech, I never thought from a research perspective but only for placements.
Thanks for the advice Sir
Great Sir
Thanks
Sir, thank you so much for your esteemed advice. I graduated from Jadavpur University CE in 2021. For this 1 year, I have been working as a RA under an eminent professor in IIT-BHU. I wish to do a PhD from the top 50s. Would you recommend me going after GATE and joining an IIT and complete my masters, or should I spend a couple of years over here and do some quality work and then directly apply for a PhD ? Thank you.
not only now it is mandatory for iit students to mention they are IITIAN but even profs get views by putting IIT in title
no hate just love great advice BTW
In a Sea of information you need Validation to stand out. Just my opinion

I'm Gate aspirant, Gate ka preparation accha hai sir and I want to join Mtech in IIT.....
Good videos prof jc...I am RS @IITR
In every job or project associate interview, they ask always ask about your cllg and also ask that is your cllg gov or private
Sir I am love both computer and also physics.
If I take cs btech, I'll miss phy part and if I take any other physics major, I'll be deprived of job scenario even after learning all cs Myself.
I don't know what to do in my career can you please help :(
I heard that doing bsc msc Is waste as it doesn't teach you any real life skill.
Why there is no such opportunity to choose subjects of our major according to our choice?
Or is there any opportunity to persue both??
