I'm Australian but I moved to São Paulo in 2016 and have lived there since. As you pointed out, it's quite surprising how a city of this this magnitude is so little known outside of Brazil and South America. Unlike Rio, which impresses most people from the outset, it usually takes more time to understand the city's charm, but it is indeed a very interesting place to live. I love the bakery/boteco culture in the city, which I often miss when travelling to certain other parts of Brazil. One small detail: people from the city of São Paulo are known as "Paulistanos" while "Paulistas" refers to people within the state of São Paulo.

Unfortunately for New York, the residents of both the city and the state are both called New Yorkers. However if you like in Manhattan then you are a Manhattanite. If you say that you are from New York to most people, they think that you are from the city and usually think of Manhattan.

Loved that you mentioned the huge immigrant population from Italy and Japan. One interesting thing about Sao Paulo is that it's the only major city in the country to feature ethnic districts in the vein of Chinatown or Little Italy in the US. If you visit Sao Paulo, it is very recommended to visit Bela Vista (or Bixiga), the Italian quarter, and Liberdade, the Japanese/Asian district.
I know that, if you come to Sao Paulo to get a taste of Brazil, you probably want to go to the Brazilian places, but I'd say it's still worth saving some time to visit these districts. It's a great opportunity to see for yourself how the average Brazilian interacts and generally welcomes different cultures, being as diverse as the country is. Besides, they're just plain fun and welcoming places, specially if you're a foodie. These are the places where you get the more traditional stuff, the Italian "cantinas" and the cozy restaurants that are not your average, standardized fancy sushi or pasta joints found in any big city.
Believe me: if you never discussed soccer with Italian immigrants in a cantina or bought cooking ingredients in the Liberdade markets after joining your friends for some sukiyaki (Japanese hot pot) in a winter afternoon, you've never experienced Sao Paulo properly.

    • @FOLIPE
      @FOLIPE 2 года назад +2

Those neighborhoods aren't really ethnic anymore, except perhaps for Liberdade, although nowadays Liberdade is more of a "pan Asian looking" touristic destination than a real Japan town.

Another impeccable video! You've conducted such an amazing research on São Paulo.
I love the proper nouns' pronunciation (Serra da Cantareira, e.g.).
What pleases me the most in São Paulo City is exploring the old town, just walking around, having my fav coffees and snacks along the way. But the interesting fact is to discover a new building or a new spot, that I had never noticed before, despite it's always been there, for the several times I've been doing the same (and random) itineraries, since I was 12.
During the turn of the 19th to 20th century, there was just one city growing pari passu with NYC: it was São Paulo. Thanks namely to the Italians' work-force and entrepreneurship.
And --one might disagree-- but the down town reminds me Manhattan pretty much, in regard to the architecture and urban dynamics in general.
São Paulo City can span from the historical, messy, sometimes underground and cyberpunk, --or from the extreme misery-- to the most luxurious and modern aspects and environments.
Finally, "be aware of the pick-pockets" and your surroundings is a serious advice.

I am from Sorocaba, a city 80km from São Paulo. I went several times to São Paulo for business and for fun.
What amazes me the most is that all São Paulo nicknames makes a lot of sense.
“The city that never sleeps” - one can hear the horns and the traffic at 3h in the morning. It can be hard to sleep in hotels that are located in front of avenues.
“Stone jungle” - it is possible to drive for hours without getting out of the city. This gives me a claustrophobic feeling sometimes. It is amazing taking of from Guarulhos and looking through the window. The city covers everything you see until the horizon.
The negative part of São Paulo is the traffic and the economical inequality.

  • @Yurinsm
    @Yurinsm 2 года назад +5

Very well done, as always. Two things I would add: there is a misunderstanding even among Brazilians, about the demonym of São Paulo city/state and Rio de Janeiro city/state. For the first, Paulista is the one born in the state, Paulistano in the city; for the latter, Carioca stands for the city and Fluminense for the state. (So every Paulistano is a Paulista, but not the other way around)
The other thing I thought was a little dubious, is that Vicacopos despite listing as an alternative airport for São Paulo serves mainly Campinas, which is a metropolitan area of its own. Azul airlines uses it as its main hub, usually the fares are cheaper if compared to the main ones and also, some companies offer free shuttles from/to downtown SP, making the 1h ride not much a big of a deal.

I’m originally from São Paulo, but I lived in London for 15 years and now in Sweden. But what I miss the most about São Paulo (and trust me there’s nothing similar in the entire world) are their bakeries, pizzas (far better than Italian ones), street foods like pastel and hot dogs and also the night life because in São Paulo the “baladas - night clubs or night places” starts 11pm and normally finishes at 8am while in Europe maximum 3am 99% of the night clubs are already closed. Apart of that the “paulistanos” (people from São Paulo city) in general with few exceptions are super cool, open minded and friendly. Now what I hate about São Paulo is the quantity of vehicles which cause long traffics, and its economic elite because they are repugnant and supporters of corruption and work exploitation!

I lived in São Paulo between 2000 and 2002, in the district of Moema and with Parque Ibirapuéra a short bike ride away. I enjoyed many things, not the least the climate (warm but usually not too hot) and the people. And the park: I've spent many a lazy Sunday on a blanket beneath a tree, reading a book, drinking aqua de coco and looking at (beautiful!) people. I also felt quite safe. The one thing I didn't like was the traffic: I had 15 km to work and in the afternoon it usually took an hour and a half to drive home.
An interesting feature of the densely populated districts is that the tall buildings are "shielded" from the streets by one- or two story buildings with shops, restaurants, etc. And the pavement/sidewalk was lined with trees. It feels like walking in a suburb, not in one of the most densely populated areas in the world.

Thank you for depicting São Paulo which is, for me, kind of my base camp in Brazil only because of true and pure love for this megalopolis :) I am actually born and raised in Santos (the big port you mentioned). By the way Santistas (people born there) are very proud of their city and their region, and are very clear in distinguishing themselves and the Santos' coastal lowlands - either culturally and geographically - from the São Paulo metro area (although they depend and rely a lot on each other and there's constant movement of people between them, either for work or for tourism). But, as Paulistas, they cannot disguise love and admiration for the capital of their state, and many of them moved there and lived there sometime in their lives (including me). Moreover, as you said, the Santos metro area is indeed part of the São Paulo Expanded Metropolitan Complex.
I have lived in France, the US (NYC), Croatia and Suriname, and now, back to Brazil, I am living in the capital Brasília, where I work. But I still have a "home" in São Paulo, one can find me over there all the time 'cause sometimes I just need to breathe some of that culture, to soak up that craziness, to get lost into that diversity of people and, why not to say, to indulge in some of the amazing food places :)
Keep up the good job for I am now a keen follower of this channel too! Love from the capital of Brazil!

Viracopos is the main hub of one of the three most important Brazilian airlines (Azul airlines) and they offer a lot of domestic and a few international flights. It's 100km away from são Paulo indeed, but it's easily accessible by one of the best Brazilian highways (Bandeirantes) and depending on where are you in Sao Paulo Viracopos it's sometimes more easily reachable than Guarulhos. Two comments on São Paulo: "Paulistas" are those from the state of São Paulo, whereas if you're from the "city" of São Paulo, you're a "paulistano" the flag you show around 4'50" is from the city of São Paulo, not the state. Another comment is that Brazil's independence was declared in 1822, not 1882. Kudos again on your videos. They're awesome. Fabio Astolfi (by the way, another Italian descent in São Paulo).

It can be a good place to live if you are wealthy (upper middle class and above), because in this case:
      - You will live in a safe neighborhood, with many attractions (museums, restaurants, bars), with access to the best subway lines (and usually less crowded than the more peripherical lines), near downtown, many food delivery options, museums, etc. etc. Basically, endless entertainment.
      - The best jobs are usually in the commercial/financial districts that are near all these best neighborhoods, so short trips to work (there will be traffic but the distance will be small)
      - Lots of options for Taxis and Ubers
      - The best parks nearby
So, basically, you will be able to avoid the worst parts of the city: traffic and crime; and will have plenty of the best parts (entertainment, food, arts, good jobs)

I plan to move to canada once I finish university to work as a game dev there, as the gaming markethere is nigh non exisstant, also canada is cold almost all the time and never reaches 45c during summer on the colder reagions which is a nice plus. Excellent video! I'm from São Paulo, descendant of Italian an Northeastern immigrants.
One of the most interesting facts about city's history is that the Jesuit Missionaries founded it exactly in the crossing point of the most important indigenous trails in the continent. It was an ancient place known by all indigenous people - some scientists say these trails have tens of thousands of years and were opened by the megafauna of the Holocene.
The Jesuits knew exactly what they were doing: they made the city's horoscope to determine the best day to found it, they studied the many rivers that cross the region to use them as routes, and they were certain the city would prosper in the future by all these features.
    They were totally right.

I look at what people do, and people value more frequent videos, not videos that are extremely carefully made but take 6 weeks to make.
I’m making sure this channel is good, but this channel is human. It’s within the range of normal. So, if people find 2 imprecise details out of 1000 details in the video, that’s fine.
