For edc I use the cobra XS, small, light and extremely strong (if you want to make them narrower to fit in a pouch slot, open them to second or third tooth, clasp the handles together, they will sit much narrower) you can even carry them in your jeans watch pocket comfortably, even when cycling. My edc is for “in a pinch”, “get it done” moments, therefore I’m not to worried about marring the surface of a fastener, fasteners are generally easy to replace at a later date. If it’s in really tight, even the pliers wrench is going to mar the surface. The fact that the cobra’s lock on top a fastener means you can apply all force to the “trailing” handle, rather than having to grip the handles together and apply turning force.
I went to the local hardware store to buy the XS but holding the 100 mm and 125 mm versions side by side instantly turned me toward the larger model. People have varying needs for edc tool sizes. The 125 mm / 5” model has been small enough for me to carry every day and barely notice it.
The XS are amazingly capable for their size and small enough for people like me who don't want to carry anything too big, I think people who say they are tiny forget that many in the EDC community carry tiny keychain sized multitools like the Squirt, Dime etc with a folder, and for us these are a viable option and way more capable. I was surprised when comparing them to a full size 8inch pair of water pump pliers I own - not Knipex but a good old solid made in West Germany pair. The Cobra XS jaws open to 25mm / 1 inch, the 8 inch OG jaws open to 30mm / 1.2 inches, so not a huge difference. As to the lack of leverage due to short handles, I think people don't realise that once the jaws are locked on to a nut for example, you only need to push on the upper i.e. longer handle so you can apply force to the end of it and get a fair amount of leverage.
I was really torn between the two, but I got the 125s because of the wider jaws and overall better strength. It also fits a water hose, where the 100s don't. I might end up with both one day
Kinda, but not as well as on the 5" version. The 5" has teeth going down both sides of the slide hole... where the xs has teeth going down one side only.
I'm genuinely curious, I have the 7" , 10" all kinds of tools... where are people actually using the 5" knipex pliars wrench? (*I have full wrench and socket sets) I'm just at a loss at where these 5" come into actual use. Besides having a tool addiction. 😂 Thanks!
