The Emperor and Empress showed her so much love and gentleness the moment they met her and embraced her warmly. Where her mother did not for one second do the same. She was more concerned with what others would think instead of loving her child she never spent a day with.
Shaoshang’s mother having the 1st impression of how her daughter has grown to be is struggling to rein her for her own good. A soldier herself she cannot help it but apply toughlove to Niao. Given her daughter’s character she feels short of time to tame and properly educate Niao specially during this times that she is getting involved with high profile people much less the palace, where intrigue and conspiracies abound that could cost her life. we should understand her dilemma as internally she is struggling with that guilt of failing Niao and hasnt built that confidence to admit and see that her daughter is naturally smart and rewarded with luck for all of her family’s sacrifices. She loves Niao in her controlling way but the daughter, naive and innocent as she is, havn’t realized her mother’s sincerest intention.
