F / M mount user here and I’m a big fan of Voigtlander. Only thing I’d add is that if you’re looking for absolute compactness, get the previous versions of the 40, they’re even smaller. Also don’t overlook previous versions of these lenses, e.g. the 90mm3.5 apo, they’re just as good
I enjoyed shooting with the voigt 28mm and 58mm, a good combo on nikon df. They balance so well in the camera versus the gigantic modern autofocus lens. Don't have chance to try the 40mm and 90mm though. I hope they can relaunch a compact ultra wide angle prime.
I use Zeiss Nikon F mount (ZF) lenses as a perfect alternative to Leica, Nikon, and Voigtländer lenses. I use the following Zeiss ZF lenses on my Nikon SLRs: 18mm f/3.5 28mm f/2 135mm f/2
I started collecting Voigtlander and Zeiss classics for Nikon F mount. These are timeless and future proof aside from the M mount lenses. I use them on my Nikon FM2N and Df aside from adapting them to my Sony mirrroless. Also picked up a Lomo Petzval and Meyer Optik Trioplan for F mount. What do you think about the Voigtlander 58mm F1.4?
Nice review! Fantastic lenses that bring a new lease of life to Nikon film cameras like FM2 or FM3A, but also brilliant on the Nikon Df (an amazing camera).
Excellent video as always, thanks. I have the Nikon 35 f2, the 50 1.8 and the 105 f2.5. What should be next, lol? I like the 55 micro, the Voigtlander 58 1.4, and the Voigtlander 28 you show here…keep making videos, thanks!
I’ve got the 40 and 58mm. I like them a lot, but it is very difficult to find much info on the new 90mm, or 28mm for that matter, but in particular the longer lens.
i got a near mint FM2n black and was thinking about a new glass, so i have with other cameras 50mm, a new voigtländer 40mm for the Nikon sounds great, even it is a good lenght.... greets BM
The Voigtlander are such incredible lens….I’ve seen image comparisons of Voigtlander and Leica and quite frankly Voigtlander surpasses Leica in some instances. They my as well make lens for Leica to bring their quality back up.
Excellent review, it got me purchasing a voigtlander lens for my Nikon slr aswell, but is it just me or voigtlander lens is pretty hard to attach to cameras?I had to twist it pretty hard to get it attached on my Nikon f3( I got the 28mm f2.8) however, original ai-s lens or other Nikon lens are pretty smooth to attach
@@JimmyCheng Thanks for sharing, the lens became slightly less tight after I removed it and reattached it a few times, perhaps the new lens needs a bit "break in", still it's a wonderful lens functionality and tactile wise thanks for your review!
You have to USE lenses before they become ‘buttery’. My Leica Summilux 50mm/f1.4 focusses buttery smooth, despite its complex focussing mechanism with floating elements. If lenses focus buttery smooth right from the beginning, they might focus to ‘loose’ over time.
too bad sharpness isn’t really great with these lenses. I was hoping the 58mm 1.4 would have an aspherical design to compete with the orginal nikon 1.2. noct but that is not the case. The others in terms of sharpness are about the same as their nikon counterparts.
Sharpness not great???? These lenses are very sharp when you use them properly. 2 things about that. First you have to nail focus. The focus indicator is helpfull but still these lenses can have back or front focus issues. Because they are cpu lenses you can use the af fine tune feature. Second the 58mm f1.4 needs some stopping down. The 28mm is sharp in the center but due to nature of a pancake lens the borders need some stopping down also.
Sorry Jimmy- I couldn't watch your video. Please stop with the lofi camera porn music. Literally every camera related RUclipsr needs to stop using this crap! It's like elevator Muzak for RUclips.
You fell in the same trap as other reviewers . A new Voigtländer lens might look as if it is made as good as a Leica lens but comparing a 40 years Leica wie a 40 years Voigtländer proofs they are worlds apart really.
I would argue perfection has the cost of opportunity: I dropped a F3 at a pyramid in the jungle last year. The camera and the lens survived. If it was my Leica I would have been zone focusing the rest of the trip. More importantly if I owned a Fle v2 I wouldn’t have ever seen a pyramid. All of these are excellent lenses.

Yeah thank you for the advice, these lenses are great, especially considering their offering prices.

I haven’t got much use out of it yet, will do a review in the future. I do quite like the Zeiss 50 1.4 planar though.
I just like their compactness. Some of the AI-s prime has pretty cool optics also.

Go with Nikon 200mm f4 micro. It produces beautiful image.
I’ve got the 40 and 58mm. I like them a lot, but it is very difficult to find much info on the new 90mm, or 28mm for that matter, but in particular the longer lens.
Please do a more in depth look at the lenses at some point. There is also a new 55mm f/1.2. They look amazing.
Nice! I also like the 20mm f/3.5 SL II N Color-Skopar. Maybe it is not sold new anymore, but it is easy to get as used.
Great suggestion! Thanks 🙏 I’ll probably take a look in the future, need a super wide to complete the set!
In 2010, I tried one on Canon EF mount and found it a bit glowy and soft. Ended up not buying it.
i got a near mint FM2n black and was thinking about a new glass, so i have with other cameras 50mm, a new voigtländer 40mm for the Nikon sounds great, even it is a good lenght.... greets BM
Voigtlander两个月前出了支55mm f/1.2 Nokton。Jimmy有兴趣测评一下吗?😛
暂时没有哎

Yes they are a bit tighter but I wouldnt say it’s too tight to a point its uncomfortable
@@JimmyCheng Thanks for sharing, the lens became slightly less tight after I removed it and reattached it a few times, perhaps the new lens needs a bit "break in", still it's a wonderful lens functionality and tactile wise thanks for your review!
Very nice sample photos, what film did you use? I just looked at some prices and it really is so much cheaper than Leica 😅
Thank you 🙏 I used Fujifilm xtra400, only because local shops selling them with developing/scanning included. I think any film would work.
Can you do a review of the Zeiss ZF lens? I have the 35mm distagon and the 50mm macro. They are very sharp!
I’ve only got the 50 1.4 zf lens for now.

Wonderful Review. Thank you Jimmy.
What about the 20mm f3.5??
If you don't mind me asking, what film do you usually shoot?
Whatever comes cheap these days. Local stores selling xtra400 with developing and scanning services included so bought a bunch of these.
@@JimmyCheng Nice. I haven’t shot film in almost 2 decades. Still ave 2 rolls of Kodak Gold 200 in the fridge. Should probably throw it out.
@@thomastuorto9929If they’ve been in the fridge then use them! Perhaps rate it at 100 or 160

Does the light meter on the FM2 work with these lenses?
yes of course.

You’re absolutely correct, the biggest advantage to these lenses are ergonomics and the fact that they are still in production.
@@JimmyCheng i’ve never tried the 90mm 2.8 but from what i’ve read its probably the best out of the bunch since it has the apo designation
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

True, but with 1/8 the price, you can get a new one every 5 years 😂
Sorry I’m comparing with new Leica lenses, the new summilux FLE v2 and steel rim I just bought. Both feel less smooth than the Voigtlanders.

That’s why the Leica is 5-10 times the price?
Sorry, but there's no such thing as a Leica alternative
