I'm only halfway through this video and you have me shopping for smart trainers and all up in Trainer Road's business. I am loving your videos, thank you!
Great details! I started riding late in life after quitting smoking in 2011. Started racing in January 2013 (Florida) and managed to win the state series and finished 12th overall in the Georgia GP stage race in cat 4/5. Since then I have moved around and built up to my best power at 292w right before my 50th birthday. My car racing career got the best of my fitness and now I just got hit by a car. Im trying to bounce back and your videos inspire me to give trainer road a go to get my fitness back! I have always raced motorcycles and cars so I have the handling skills but it took time to get the fitness. Your tenacity is a thing of beauty. And your beard is epic! Thanks and stay strong!!
Thanks for following along! Sounds like you've had an exciting career, and good job on quitting smoking! Bouncing back from injuries takes time, so be patient and you will get to where you want to be! Hope your winter training goes well!
@Vicki Peterson I was doing about 250-300 miles a week in really fast group rides throughout the year (Florida) I would do 3 weeks of 2x week 70 mile rides with "Boca Tour" group ride ~30 miles at the limit. Had a pretty good coach. Weekend was 1 100 mile and 1 50-60 mile ride. Usually 1 day sprint intervals in between and week 4 was easy riding or other activities. Moved to CO and tested well. My car racing got more involved and took away my big miles. Im lucky to hit 240-250 in the summer now LOL!
This is extremely valuable. Your view and feedback on training resources is extensive and honest, thank you for that. Your openness with training workouts and racing is also very valuable. All of this information- we all appreciate it. Thank you!
well done dude, 300W is well within reach! I've had similar experience to you on trainerroad, I can't speak highly enough of it. Good luck next year, look forward to more videos👍👍
I watched a ton off your early videos which were a tribute to dogged persistence, devoid of ego and delusion. Delighted that you unlocked the potential finally and thank you for one of the best "how I did it" stories in cycling.
Thank you for such a concise explanation of the platform. I've been riding recreationally for a year and I want to train more seriously, but I've been daunted by the prospect of starting with TrainerRoad. This has made it much more accessible, and your laying out of the data is super clear. Thanks again.
I just want to say that I love you bro - Im also a math and cs major, also 5ft 11, also getting into cycling, similar weight, eyeing up crits. Bada bing, bada boom. You’re my favourite RUclipsr.
TrainerRoad has revolutionized me as a rider. Just this past weekend, I pulled a buddy through rain in chilly temps for over an hour home at 3 w/kg. I would have blown up after 10 minutes a year ago if I had tried to do that. Awesome analysis and I could not agree more with your feelings.
@@ClaudioMarquez You really hit the nail on the head regarding repeatability in this and I think that's something people too focused on FTP often fail to consider. Being able to punch over FTP over and over again is so beneficial. Great video dude and awesome work on the race videos!
I have just finished by base1 - base2 - short power build (all mid volume) on trainer road and I found it interesting that I almost got the exact same gains you did. I started at 236 ssb1 and after build have an ftp of 272. All at 70kg.
A really comprehensive review with a bunch of great info. I just started riding a few months ago and started up on TR with an ftp of 170 with a view to training through the winter. This video gives me real confidence that I am doing the right thing. Thanks dude.
Claudio, I really enjoyed this video! Thanks for the great breakdown of how your training helped! I haven't taken training seriously at all for the last 2 years and just casually rode in the summers. Did an ftp test last week and hit 225, which is alright I guess. Your progress is motivational and I hope I can get my FTP up to around 26-270 by summer. Plan on showcasing my progress on my channel as well!
I know this is a year old video but I trained and raced for a year. Never had a FTP above 250 and went from a CAT5 to a CAT2. I think you just need to work on being confident with your bike. A trainer can only do so much and ultimately you'll have to ride outside to get better in those corners while under stress. Hope you keep racing. Your FTP is way higher than mine.
This video is awesome. I love that you get straight to the point in an honest and succinct manner and really provide a great overview of what the experience is like and what someone can expect to get out of it. For a subscription with other options competing in a similar space ie zwift, sufferfest etc this video really helped in deciding if TR is the right choice for my goals. Thanks!
Great video. I’m also a TR user, training for my first triathlon. It’s definitely a game changer for cycling training. I’m improving so much, it’s crazy.
I rode 3000 miles this year and gained 80FTP just by going hard 2 days a week with faster people than me and going easy on a solo weekend recovery ride. 190-273 gonna lose some weight and improve my watts per kilo, that is the hardest part 97 kilos 🍻
If you want to go faster chase faster people and learn how to ride their wheels. Positive people will give you all the good advice you need to improve. Then rotate in and put in the work!!!
Similar story to mine...longtime crossfitter and got into cycling in 2020. Never trained year round due to living in a snowy area for 5 months out of the year (indoor trainers are not for me). In Sept 2023 I decided to go all in on cycling since I moved to an area that is year round riding. Just got trainerRoads yesterday. Il be doing all the workouts outside.
17 races to finish, and look at you now. Well done for not giving up, getting back on with your training, and always being positive! Found your videos really inspiring - encouraged me to go for my first road race, because seeing you fail your first one made me realise that life will go on if I do too! SO many bike channels showing AMAZING riders on RUclips, or vids celebrating amateurs best day out - yours were the first I had seen of someone who wasn't at their peak, who was getting dropped etc. Thank you for sharing your journey and experiences. Also- that dicey last lap - you did so well to stay on the bike! Good luck for the following year!!!
Keep up the gains my dude. Its been really cool to see how far you have come! TR is the absolute best! I tell everyone if you want to get faster you use TrainerRoad. Its that simple. Way to go man. I'm on the East Coast and hopefully will get a chance to race with you!!
This is the first time that i have seen any of your videos and really enjoyed it. I have had a similar journey to you in respect of coming from Zwift and my FTP gains and im currently seeking that 4WPG and then 300W (last tested at 282 and due to test again on Monday). I think your summary of TR is very accurate. Good luck with your future training, racing and goals.
Thanks for the vid Claudio, great to see your progress. I agree with your summary. What I do is pair all my stuff to both zwift and TR via bluetooth/ANT+ to a laptop and phone, so I get the visuals and kills the time with zwift but the actual workout with trainerroad. Best of both worlds! The best thing is sitting on say a 10min FTP interval and blowing past people in zwift :) thanks again for the vid!
You inspire me Claudio, I am yet to get into trainer road after I get a power meter or indoor trainer. I am currently using the Garmin Century program since I only have a heart rate monitor for the watch. I have never raced yet ,am trying to get faster to atleast enjoy my group rides and get into racing some day,and also trying to loose weight as well.Barry from Kenya ~ 35yrs, 5 10' , 98kgs.
Fantastic review its great to see your progress man. 👍 im 6 weeks into my first base programme. Broke my wrist riding outside and in a way its been a blessing. It made me buy a trainer and join trainerroad. It will be interesting to see if i am faster outside once my wrist has healed. 👍
Well done Claudio, that's some progression over the last year! looking good to break the 300W barrier in 2021. Enjoying your training and racing journey, great channel.
Thanks for the detailed insight! I have a similar mindset, being geeky about numbers, being fine with indoor cycling, enjoying structured training, being willing to include things like weight lifting, just to improve power on the bike, etc. Do you know the YT channel from Dylan Johnson? I think you'd like it. Keep the videos coming! I also enjoy your insights in your races, especially since I never raced so far.
Great video! very inspirational. I've ridden for years, but you just helped me make up my mind. If I want to get serious about improving, I need to follow structured training. I'm getting an indoor trainer and subbing to TR this winter.
Also a big fan of TrainRoad here, I was in the same GMSR as you.. I was one of the riders off the back during the Crit. I found the rain made it too sketchy but overall always have a blast at GMSR. Love your videos!! Hope to see you at a race in 2021!!! Check out Killington Stage Race. I'm planning that as my first "A" race and GMSR as my second "A" race and then into the CX season.
This is so cool. I have TR and Zwift, but always felt the TR workouts to be challenging. However, I can see improvements on my group rides on Sundays. Looking forward to see if you’ll be able to break the 300watt ftp mark…unless you already did and I missed the video.
Hey, Claudio! Greetings from BR 🇧🇷😊 Do you recommend TrainerRoad for riders who ride mostly outdoors? On your video it felt like most of your rides are indoor on the trainer. I ride 4-5 times a week, I guess I'd be able to fit 1 or 2 on the trainer. You think TrainerRoad would still be productive for me?
Cycling always amazes me. A dude goes straight down is almost hit by Claudio, another goes right into a pole and yet "everyone was able to walk away". I once broke my arm just balancing myself on a railing after a not even super hard push.
Thank you for this vid! As far as gels during the TR (longer rides) - you mention a gel before, a pack of bloks during and another at 70ish mins if it’s a longer ride... I was just wondering if you drink coffee - as I do and want to be a bit carful about my caffeine intake. Are gels sans caffeine as effective? Thanks!!!
I have try few indoor platform over the years like zwift, sufferfest and trainerroad. All of the platform have their pro&con. Trainerroad is certainly not the most playfull or interactive platform but in the end I ended up using Trainerroad the most. Im the kind of guys who need strong structure and plan and i think that exactly where trainer road road excel. Have been a 4.3w/kg guys for a while. Still on the journey to hit 5w/kg, gotta have goal...
not quite sure how to do it but I do know you can do the trainer road workouts while in the Zwift world. Also hope to see you at some more races in NC next year. I was at the last Herbalife one that you was in. Looking forward to the video! Also check out @norcalcycling video on the Herbalife Crit it was from my Gopro but he did a great review of that race that you were in.
I do CrossFit exercises every week. But the clases are really tough and it takes too long to recover from them. I can’t do both CF classes and cycling at the same time. Strength training is great, even with light weights.
Such an amazing video. It's been incredible to see your journey and the grit you mentioned is very apparent. Can't wait for another year of videos from you!
Very helpful information. I have one question, how did you keep your bike handling skills up? If you train on a trainer all of the time are you missing that factor? Thanks again
Good question! I simply just race alot, as much as I can. The first few races back from off-season are a bit rusty but nowadays it only takes a few laps to revive the learned skills. Some people do drills in parking lots with cones, that seems to help.
Interesting video, My FTP at start was 200 w now probably dropped a bit because i have not been consistent enough, I have always thought that 100 watt gain over a year or 2 is what most normal people can achieve. Just shows the vast difference between a normal fit athlete and a TDF level rider, They can put out 300 plus watts for ages.
Great work on this video. Some really good information. I'm trying to find the chart with weights for types of riders regarding squats. I looked all over the TR website and can't find it. Not sure if that was a forum post. How did you find it if you don't mind me asking? Looking to get into strength training as a 41 year old in what will eventually be my first race season. Good insight also about doing squats 2 times a week to hopefully not be as sore and lose the gains. Definitely my plan now. Also going to get into it slowly. Dylan Johnson always prefaces squats with a very slow start as you will be very sore. Thanks Claudio!
great stuff!!! Can you talk more about the ERG mode when you dropped your cadence. It seems I am having this problem with my new Elite XR trainer. Wasn't sure if it was the trainer or me. I don't know if I dropped my cadence it just seemed like the trainer got so hard to pedal, I'll have to keep my eye on this to make sure my cadence stays the same.
Thanks! The key to ERG mode is keeping your cadence steady; so I keep it above 85rpm the whole time. Once you start to vary your cadence, the power is all over the place and it's not as efficient.
Great progress! Agree FTP is part of your overall success in races - what about your time in zone over the course of a race. Not only did your FTP improve but I can imagine your time at Sweet spot and above was a bigger proportion of your race time.
Good quality video. You’re a natural bro🤙🏻 have u ever tried attacking (las lap flyer$ 😉🚴🏻♂️💨💨) i think it might suit you as lighter rider its hard to sprint probably??
Thanks for the review! I actually found your channel back in June this year looking for first-hand experience on TR. TR is great for me & my fitness improved significantly! One thing I am wondering about your powercurves: why are they so uneven? You stated that you ride in erg-mode (as I do). My powercurves are perfectly even...
Thanks! Yea, the power curves depend on your power meter and how steady your cadence is. If you keep your cadence exactly steady it will look really smooth. Also it could me a setting on the power meter/smart trainer.
Rule #42: A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.... so, good decision! LMAO! I am a TR User from 2 years ago. For me, something that gave me even more gains, was adding Endurance time on Sundays (All Sundays, I ride outside). I started adding 1.5 Hours after the 2 Hours TR Session for a total ride of 3.5 Hours on 1st Week; on 2nd Week, I add 2 Hours after the TR Session for a total ride of 4 Hours; on 3rd Week, I add 3 Hours after the TR Session, for a total ride of 5 Hours. (On 4th Week: I never add more time, because it is Recovery week). Now, I am able to ride for 6 to 8 hours on a mix of Zone 2 on the flats and Zone 3 at the climbs, without feeling bad at any point, just enyojing the views from the routes I ride. I am planning to go to the GYM, if Covid-19, gaves a chance, to be able to break that 4.5 W/kg barrier. Keep on the good work man!!
22:08 - that dude hitting the light pole... holy shit
That was insane.
Yea it happened so fast, I don't know how I stayed on my bike.

Thanks!!!
Yea I sometimes over do it with caffeine, now I take non-caffeine gels during the ride.
Nice! 5w/kg is a great goal, go for it!
You made me go for trainer road!! Thanks
Awesome! Good stuff for sure!
not quite sure how to do it but I do know you can do the trainer road workouts while in the Zwift world. Also hope to see you at some more races in NC next year. I was at the last Herbalife one that you was in. Looking forward to the video! Also check out @norcalcycling video on the Herbalife Crit it was from my Gopro but he did a great review of that race that you were in.
Yes you can do it. Search the TrainerRoad forums for several ways on how to do this.
Yes I saw the norcal video, good stuff! Hope to see you out there!
Appreciate what you do! Thanks!
My pleasure!
Good video! Do you think that crossfit training would help in your development if you when back to it?
I do CrossFit exercises every week. But the clases are really tough and it takes too long to recover from them. I can’t do both CF classes and cycling at the same time. Strength training is great, even with light weights.
I learned how to ride a bicycle in 2018 at the age of 34 :)
Never too late to start! Good job!
I'm getting back on the structured training wagon and hopefully i can see some nice gains!
You got this! Go for it!
Such an amazing video. It's been incredible to see your journey and the grit you mentioned is very apparent. Can't wait for another year of videos from you!
Thank you!! Glad you are enjoying the journey!
Awesome improvements, great video
Thanks! Hard work pays off!
@@ClaudioMarquez you inspired me to try it, already have a subscription , starting tomorrow
Great insights. Thank you for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Love the new video bro. I’m on zwift and will be changing over to TR for the 2021 season.
Good stuff in 2021! thanks for watching!
Thanks! Type "strength training calculator" in google. I can barely do squats once a week with the high volume plans; so much extra fatigue!
Thanks man! I'm in MA id love to see you at a race in CT sometime. Hoping we get though this situation quickly! Thanks again
great stuff!!!
Thanks!!
Such good info. Great editing. You deserve all your gains and I sincerely wish you more improvement and great races in ths future.
Much appreciated! Thanks for following along!
Good quality video. You’re a natural bro🤙🏻 have u ever tried attacking (las lap flyer$ 😉🚴🏻♂️💨💨) i think it might suit you as lighter rider its hard to sprint probably??
I've never attacked last lap but it's something to consider!
@@ClaudioMarquez do you have another powermeter connected to TR?
It seems to me that you are not running TR in erg-mode...
Just started my TrainerRoad plan!! Hopefully it’ll raise my ftp from 300W to 350😬
Can you go into detail about your TR strength training routine? Reps and sets? Frequency? Thanks!
Coming soon!
Thanks! Adding those endurance hours sounds like a good plan; awesome!
Lol. I just finished the “Rules”.
