I was ridding up the tram and looked over at the people lining up waiting for the rope to drop the Road to Provo. When I got off the tram I skied over. I saw Snowbird Ski Patrol starting to ski toward the rope just past the top of the Little Cloud Chair. I decided to follow a patroller past the line up of skiers and snowboarders to the rope line. Just seconds later the rope dropped and the race was on for hundreds of skiers to get first tracks on Road to Provo. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time and had a pretty awesome bluebird powder run! The powder skiing frenzy!
Thank you Snowbird Ski Patrol.

this is the first time that I have watched a video of someone skiing and then afterwards thought to myself that I don't want to go skiing
Yeah, I agree with you. Don't go skiing. :)
I realize it's pretty off topic but does anybody know a good website to watch new series online ?
@Brysen Jasper try flixzone. Just search on google for it :)
@Kendall Joshua Yup, have been using flixzone for since april myself :D
@Kendall Joshua thanks, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) Appreciate it !
God I hope my mountain is never like this
for about 4 inches of fresh.. lol
lmao
Just out of curiosity, what is your mountain? Not trying to talk shit, just genuinely curious. If you don't want to drop the name of it publicly over comments, just PM me!
My mountain is better than your mountain

This is why I backcountry ski. People pushing each other to get 6" of powder....
But racing other people for powder is so fun while skiing.
Ditto. The skin/climb filters out these types of “powder shredders”
Powder skiing lemmings
huhhman you got me.... I lie on RUclips just to try and impress you. You are my muse.
I push people to get 3in" of powder on the east coast
I somewhat miss skiing in my younger years. Glad I did it when I could. The scenery is incredible!
skiing is awesome! glad I was able to bring you back with the video
that place is way too freaking crowded
Definitely! Go ski somewhere else ;)
Would rather ski local than there any pow day. Untouched pow lines under the lift all day.
OregonKid Productions holywood Ski runs under the lift are the best!
Go to Alta
Yup.
I like to ski places where I don't have to fight for my powder. Bird is not one of them. Even though it has pretty good terrain and conditions.
where is your favorite place to ski?
Japan
Canada, some of the best
Only in America do they make you queue to ride pow...strange
Exactly. There is no queuing in powder skiing
Yup, i was wondering wtf was going on with the rope. When i get off the chair i'm gone.
Its ridiculous!
only in utah you mean
Waiting for a gate to open. We have major avalanche issues at Snowbird
All that effort to ski a few inches of fresh powder on Blue and green runs?
It was totally worth it. Especially if you waited in line for an hour for the rope to drop and it ended up being pillaged before you could drop into your run.
Sorry I called u that just don’t judge something u don’t know anything about
Yeah, there are no green or blue runs at Snowbird once you get above 1000 ft. lol.
@@pooskerwolf9003 uuuuu. Nope. Skied gthe Bird and Alta for many years. This area is a blue. You want 2black, hit the bookends or Peruvian ridge. I've waited for gates to drop, but only at certain places where I knew the payoff was well worth it. This area is worth it for intermediate class skiers to get a great experience for pow. For advanced or expert skiers, not so much worth the wait. You wanna see chaos for pow, go to Alta after a serious dump, and wait for either the backside or high shoulder to open. That is powder hungry dips elbowing each other for the goods.
Ryan Praskievicz lmao, you seemed to skip everyone who seemed to actually be waiting so you could pillage it
I was there 20 or so years ago, standing right next to Dick Bass himself, and he told me that he had waited 25 years for that day, when they dropped the rope on 62" of fresh pow and several hundred yahoos lived it up all morning. I was one of them. Unforgettable!
That is a cool story. Also on the Road to Provo or was it Mineral Basin that he had waited 25 years for?
Great story! My Grandpa started skiing at Snowbird the first year it opened and skied with Dick dozens of times. I’m sure him and Dick are still hitting runs together up there - rumor says that it’s a powder day everyday up there.
I'm so glad I live in Japan. What a nightmare... all for 10 turns in a bowl.
Thanks for the video. I'm watching it while on a cross trainer in London, and it brings back many happy memories of powder days.
Ba ba ba bird bird bird bird is the word.... For 12 years, Snowbird was my home mountain. And some Alta... a little bit of Solitude... and Snow Basin... and Powder Mtn... and okay okay Brighton too... and, and, and. Utah rocks!
I'm sure you had many great powder days skiing during those 12 years!
@@RyanPraskievicz 2011 was HISTORIC. Every other day was a powder day. 690" is what's in the books, but the real number was a locals favorite; 801. 801" was measured on the mountain and is also the area code. I got the t-shirt. That's over 65 FEET of snow. Getting first trax after an Interlodge (People get locked down in the lodge until after mountain safety blows the slide paths) is beyond epic; it's galactic! With skis as wide as water skis, you still plunge waist or shoulder deep with each turn. You ski off a solid 20 or 30' and barely compact on landing. You land straight leg and then blast through your bomb hole. It's just nuts!
I am glad to have ski bummed at snowbird in the late 90's before the internet spread the secret of snowbird. There were some lines at Road to provo but nothing like that! Brings back great memories though. Can't wait for ski season!
The bluebird day after the storm really brings the powder hungry crowds on the Road to Provo. Gotta love the 90's
I remember Alta in the early 80s. Untracked lines for a week after a storm. Twelve bucks a day.
4:20 best moment
hahaha you're so funny lmao
That’s why I don’t ski Snowbird and I don’t fish the Provo. Plenty of places in this state to avoid the tourists and combat skiing and fishing. Enjoy the powder everyone. Glad you’re here.
lemmings...
Nice snow...too many people...glad I'm in Canada!
Where in Canada do you ski? No powder panic north of the boarder?
Gosh this is awful. A snow supermarket. However, sorry mate but your attitude lacks any possible hint of fair-play.
Snow supermarket is a great way to describe the powder panic line up.
Dude that was crazy all of the guys fighting for the pow.....I have never seen it like that!!
it was like a bunch of dogs fighting for a single piece of steak
I cant believe that there are ppl who enjoy this I would litterally go straight back to my car if I saw that crowd... thats the definition of disgusting
More ski time for me then

A lot of negative comments by people who don't realize that this "crowd" was the result of bad planning. The lift should have closed until the avalanche inspection was over. If they opened the lift after the fact, this mountain would have been wide open. I ski Utah all the time (have a place there) and the mountains are big and wide open on most days. In fact, there are a dozen mountains to chose from within a relatively short drive so you can avoid the more "touristy" mountains or "locals only" mountains that tend to very busy on weekends. Ski on weekdays, get on early, and go into the back country. You'll have hours of skiing with virtually no crowds.
this was a bluebird day after the storm when road to provo was the last to open. the twin peaks (pipeline) are directly above the road to provo and are very steep often with huge cornices leading to avalanche hazard. often road to provo is the last terrain to open.
This video made me even more glad to live in Canada

I don't know what the big rush was I mean there's no place to really ski work skin it's all flat I don't know I remember seems like this up at steeplechase up at Aspen now that's a worthwhile frenzy waiting for the lines to go down and just skiing I think it's one of the longest steepest runs in North America from what I've been told but that is worth putting on your snorkel for!
Sounds epic
Lmao, I’ll stay in Canada thanks 😂
I saw this ever before i shredded snowbird. Never thought id mKe it there. Thankfully its never been like this when i was there.
A lot of work for a flat run. Disneylands are everywhere.
working for it makes it that much better- the skier cross to the low angle powder add to the overall experience

Killington in Vermont is my home mountain. I live in Salt Lake City now. If you've never been skiing in Utah you should check it out.
Way to fight for your line. And that was not bad I seen that road to Provo get real crazy with a foot or more.
Road to Provo is an experience
I skied Snowbird on high school spring break in 1995 from Norfolk, Virginia... it dumped 6-8 inches of powder overnight every night, and was blue bird during the day everyday... I was like, "where the hell am I this place can't be real?"...
the legend is amazing and true. glad you had such a great experience skiing at snowbird. have you been back sense '95?
There is no such thing as "dumped 6-8 inches." That is a dusting.
That bowl is always amazkngt
I have to admit, as someone who has stood in line at the front of the rope for 45+ minutes waiting for it to open, I got a little pissy just watching this video of you cutting to the front; not to mention it looked like the people in front of you knocking into each other seemed rather rude...for what? A couple hundred yards of untracked? The run did make me jealous I admit, but be courteous.
Yeah. I know there are no friends on power days but there was alot of less than exemplary behaviour in that video. And of course hardly any examples of trying to minimize lines so others can have some fun (Ryan did at least semi follow lines on a couple occasions, and I did spot ONE pair of matched powder turns).
Can't say I'm surprised, just bummed. Frankly not a bad sub-example of why the whole world is fucked these days. Everyone wants it all, and bitches when they don't get it, but no consideration to others who are in the same boat. All entitlement, no responsibility.
Glad other people were upset about the same thing. That was Black Friday chaos. Really glad I've never had to work that hard (i.e. cut in lines) to find untracked lines. Although those sweeping vistas of virgin snow gave me a half chub.
Agree. No friend in power day but there are still rule, order and civilization
I thought everyone knows rule number 1 of a powder day: there are no friends on a powder day.
Eagle_Jizz you lack knowledge or are just a stuck up human This is a free for all mountain nobody was waiting on anything.
Dude I was legit one of the people in the front of the line. That was an awesome day
yeah fun run. hopefully you made some good turns and I didn't mess up your run
This looks like hell I pray my mountain never gets like this
this is easy to avoid. just don't wait for the rope drops for hours. the rest of the mountain was a ghost town that day.
utah is easily the best place to ski if you like deep powder and no crowds, speaking from experience
It can be very good. Resort days when it is snowing are better than bluebird days after the storm. They are much less crowded and offer free refills
I feel blessed that I already had the luck to track faces like this and even better ones all by myself ♤♡◇♧
You are one of lucky ones
I love how the audio matched what is going on in the video.
what do you mean?
@@RyanPraskievicz Tension and buildup in the music from 0:00 to 0:37 showing all the crowd. The music starts to flow from 0:38 to 0:52 as you work your way to the front of the line. Tension builds again in the music until the explosion of the rope drop between 1:07 and 1:12 where everyone is scrambling. The intensity increases until you get finally get around yellow jacket at 1:20 and you are moving again, to the front. The music becomes flows again as the last green jack guy drops in around 1:53. Clamness again at about 2:26 when you float through the powder. Solitude at 2:40. A hit at 3:10 when you drop again. Wow. I’ll never understand why people think that is fun.

Thanks for the great video! I live in New England and we have an experience like this every Sunday. Our resorts are MUCH smaller than yours in Utah but just as crowded it seems. Also we rarely (if ever) have beautiful powder snow like you guys do, im jealous!
Thanks Rusty. Where do you ski in New England. I've had some great powder days at Killington and Sugarloaf too.
Ryan Praskievicz As a local i will let you in on the best spots: Stowe and Smugglers Notch can both be considered the toughest terrain and most challenging. Jay Peak is known for its amazing tree skiing and glades. Last but not least are Sugarbush and Mad River Glen, great places to visit bearing in mind that all of them combined still coudn't fit in one resort out west! Hidden gems are Stratton and Magic Mountain.

@@BW-pr8qr you are right, for sure! Magic Mountain nearby is the real gem
To all the people complaining about the 'line'..if you look carefully at the video, you can see the 'front' of the line is on the ridge, but there are tons of people down the side of the ridge and a few up top of the ridge as well waiting...pick your 'line' to get to the pow. If you don't want to go above or below the ridge, then go wait in the back, pretty simple.
I didn't realize there was a line to ski down the mountain
Everyone should experience 'powder panic' on road to provo at least once in their lifetime.
Do you agree? Have you experienced the powder panic on the road to Provo while skiing Snowbird?
Ryan Praskievicz I have indeed and it was an experience unlike no other! 😂
The trick is to wait for the initial crowd to go by who usually turn in early and keep heading out over the rocks at KnuckleHead Traverse. Most people are not willing to billygoat over rocks so its fresh almost all day. High Baldy traverse is harder to get to but there is almost never lines on that one, steeper and better terrain too.
Beautiful. Love Snowbird . . .
Glad you enjoyed it. Snowbird is great. It was a beautiful day of skiing
There is nothing like a Road to Provo or Mineral rope drop. It's such a Snowbird experience and it's such a thrill every time.

It is an all you can eat powder buffet
The size of those drifts is nuts!!
yeah they can get pretty crazy on the Road to Provo when it is windy
To all the people here who are calling him a bitch for cutting the line, I think you all have the wrong idea. This isn't a line for a chairlift, it's a line on the flat ground to the traverse. This is powder, you go where you need to be to ski it whenever you can. you don't necessarily have 'rights' to it because you stood there first. If you want powder, especially at a place like snowbird, you have to go out and get it. Great vid, keep up the good work.
If you want good powder in the usa go to whitefish montana.
the goal of the video was to show how ridiculous these rope drops and line ups are getting. it was a fun run with good snow but probably not worth waiting in line for an hour.

Ha, Mammoth and Tahoe don't have anything close real powder, just sierra cement. And talking about crowded...can be in a 45 minute line to get on a lift and then the drive around the lake is an hour. I can say this with a fact as I lived there most of my life... and then got wise moved to Utah and CO. The best thing you can say about west CA skiing is that you can ski in a t-shirt and jeans
I’m from New Hampshire, I learned to ski when I was 5 but I wouldn’t like to ski in such deep powder🎿
If you learned how to ski in New Hampshire on the ice you could definitely ski powder and have fun doing it at Snowbird.
