@@emseashels I 100% agree with you - every SM idol is super talented, however they are also all super gorgeous. So many people come to their auditions, so there is no doubt in my mind that they are looking for skills since they have plenty of people to choose from. This doesn't change the simple fact that if someone is not good looking (or at least have potential to be), they unfortunately will not be able to survive at SM. Its not a coincidence that SM idols are known for their perfect visuals. I definitely think that they do focus on skill, but they also focus on visuals since they can afford to be picky with the amount of applicants they get. I just feel like the man who used to work at SM was not being brutally honest when saying that they do not care about visuals. I do understand that they can be more lenient about visuals at the auditions, and I did not mean to come across as hating. I just wanted to point out my opinion, that's all :)
I think they recruit the best visuals and if he/she doesn't work hard or isn't serious they let them go, no matter how beautiful they are. But if you're naturally talented (even without training eg baekhyun,wendy, chen, Taeil), then they have greater chance over visuals.

every company scouts good looking random people, and were called back to audition privately so the privileged they only have is to go for auditions with many other auditionees, but other than that nothing else, those who are casted/scouted still go through audition
Every company go for looks, not just SM, YG is ridiculous to not-so attractive trainees specially to girls, same with JYP tho, and their body shaming. Even for applying a job in Korea they go for looks. Where are most of the talented people at? In the underground scene.. that's why idols are prejudiced by underground artists but seriously I think SM does really look for skills a lot, I mean majority of their artists start off as a child aging 10 to 15 most of their features aren't well developed and can't be seen fully yet. Same before with YG, for their boys trainees, but watching ygtb I think they changed that too.
Duh? looking good is their talent. I don't think anybody with a tiniest bit of understanding about the industry wouldn't compare idols with underground singer-songwriters. Also, YG used to not care about looks. Remember Big Bang and 2NE1? They had some traditionally good looking members but they also had not so good looking ones. And then they realized to make more money they also needed to appeal to the fans who care about looks. And BAAAAM Blackpink happened.

The younger the better, but that's that way in almost all of the agencies in the industry, they prefer younger people to train them and debut them still young, that's why it's unusual for an idol group to debut with a member who's 25 or older

You can search in Korean Law about Foreign workers. Not only in SM. Foreign workers will treat different. I didn't follow many idol. As i know you can see on lai kuanlin when he is active as wannaone. He is also treat different. Sallary for Korean and Foreign member also different

제가 sm토공 오디션본사람 인데요 . 얼굴 안보긴요 진짜 진심으로 하신말씀인지... 제가 오디션봤을때 심사위원분이랑 다른 분 이신지..오디션때 제 앞앞분이 죄송한 말이지만 아이돌하실수 있는 비주얼이 아니셨어요. 제가봐도 근데 오디션에 온건 노래를 정말 잘하시는분이구나 생각했었고 10명 순서되서 들어갔고 그 분이 첫번째 순서였어요 근데 심사위원분 보고 너무 놀랬? 다고 해야되나 노래 시작해주세요 하고는 노래 시작하기도 전에 쳐다보지도 않고 뒷사람 한명씩 보고 종이 넘기면서 체크 하시더라고요 그리고 노래끝나니까 바로 네 다음 분하고 다음번호 얼굴쳐다보고 앞에분 노래는 그냥 안들으시던데요 얼굴 안보긴..

DOES LOOKING REALLY CONFIDENT PLAYS A HUGE FACTOR IN PASSING THE AUDITIONS ASIDE FROM SKILLS. I CAN BE VERY CONFIDENT BUT I KNOW I DON'T HAVE OUTSTANDING SKILLS.
I’m not an sm judge so I really wouldn’t know but just from my experience as a performer being super confident in auditions does actually help you! Even if you’re not that good, when you can see the passion you have for your performance it still makes people want to choose you.
As said by someone (I forgot who it was) who auditioned for SM once, she said that your confidence plays a huge role on how well you'll do. The judges are looking for people who are confident in themselves, and without confidence, how will you perform on stage? Looking confident and showing off your skills with confidence is key. Your skills don't have to be outstanding, but your skills would have to have potential to improve.
in short, there's no plastic procedure on those idols done by SM itself. If anything, its the idol themself who want to "fix" their faces not because SM told them to. Eunhyuk for instance, he's not a flower boy but he's one of those idol whos not ashamed to show off his childhood pics.
I read an ex-SM trainee on Reddit that SM will kinda offer some of their [idols] to do this and that but it depends or it's up to them if they'll change it or not
@@bt3527 well in that instances yes there will be someone from any agencies who will suggest some of the idols to fix their faces, it's just mere suggestions so its up to those idols to consider. For example, Yang Hyunsuk himself will tell some of his idols (female) to fix their face a lil. Suhyun AKMU explicitly talks about that in a talk show.

(let's say you we're given a chance to have a contract to work with after 4 years, so it's easy to say that you somehow 19-20 years old) so it's not too old for them to hire you as rookie solo/group since the lifespan of the contract also counts. but idk for sm if you know, you know. (also the training span depends on your progress) NATIONALITY? - Although it is better to have a specific research for your own becuase SME might not open for all countries.. Well do i rely on company's perks? - Like the ex-judge said. they can accommodate trainees with some essentials that are needed for every individual. but if you audition for other companies, they might not be liable for the perks just like sme's offers. so it id better to have an emergency finance than to trust the perks. You wouldn't know. Misconceptions about the skills and visuals: - Well it really depends on your whole appearance, as we know, SME is the home for the powerful vocals and we couldn't deny it. I think people have to stop saying SM ONLY cares abt good looks. I mean, they have thousands of peoples going to their audition. It wouldn't be impossible to find someone who is actually talented AND gorgeous.

I think there are 2 things, the first 'audition' which focuses on talent and visuals is just a bonus like the members of Nct Dream who auditioned when they were young maybe (?), While the second is street-casting where they focus on visuals like Taeyong and others. .. about lucas As far as I know he auditioned as the first is model, maybe SM found an idol potential in him that's why Lucas was able to debut, but I also don't know because i dont SM staff,this just my opinion

스엠은 유영진 때부터 얼굴이 최고 가치가 아니었는데 다들 오지게 부정하네 ㅋㅋ 스엠은 실력없는데 외모 잘났다고 데뷔시킨 경우는 없어요. 오히려 유영진 이후로 꾸준히 스엠 아이돌들의 라이벌 취급 받았던 그룹들에서 외모 끝내주는데 실력없는 아이돌들이 여럿 데뷔했죠. 외모가 뛰어나면 일단 합격하는건 들어와서 배워볼 기회를 주는거지 어차피 재능 없으면 월평가에서 떨어져 나가니까요. 최근에 데뷔한 쇼타로나 지젤도 (사실 난 그들이 외모에 떨어진다고 생각안하지만) 처음 팬덤 생기기 전에는 못생겼다고 욕 엄청 먹었어요. 근데 지금 보면 다들 이쁘고 잘생기고 매력 뿜뿜이죠. 어느 정도 회사에서 스타일링 할 정도만 되면 그 담부터는 실력이에요. 태용이도 첨에 춤 못췄다는 이유만으로 '재능없는데 잘생긴 애 뽑아서 에셈이 실력 만들어준 케이스'로 자꾸 이상하게 설명하는데, 예체능 재능이라는게 아무리 트레이너가 뛰어나도 선천적 재능이 없는데 후천적으로 만들어내지는 절대 못해요. 재능 계발도 정도껏이지. 태용이는 23명 중 메인래퍼, 메인댄서, 작사작곡에, 타멤들이 곡 녹음할 때 프로듀싱 도움까지 주는 앤데 그 빛나는 재능을 에셈이 갈고 닦아 만들어 줬다면서 태용이 평가 절하하면 님들이 오디션에서 떨어지는 이유에 위로라도 받나요? 아래 댓글들 보니까 본인이 오디션에서 합격못하는 이유를 외모때문이라고 생각하면서 자기보다 못하는 애들이 외모때문에 합격했다고 생각하는 내용들이 보이는데, 그렇게 합당하지 않은 불평불만으로 부정적인 생각을 하는 것만으로도 자기 매력을 갉아먹는 거라는 거 알았으면 좋겠네요. 밝고 긍정적이고 건강하게 생각할 수 있는 사람들이 매력적으로 보이게 마련입니다.
If you're talented SM will take you but they'll look for the visuals and train them up. Taeil, Doyoung, Baekhyun, Chen, Xiumin etc. are examples of SM taking in talent. SM just get the cherry on top for trainees all the best just flock to them. Best Visuals, Vocals and Dancers now they are looking for more good rappers with visuals to become an all-rounded company.

I personally think it isn't necessarily about looks as it's more about how a person carries them/him/herself - as in, you need confidence to feel beautiful if that makes sense Because on the grand scheme of things: there's no such thing as universal beauty To one person someone is beautiful, to the other that someone can be plain/average

Honestly...WHAT'S IN IT FOR THEM?? They have to be skilled, pretty, polite, look healthy, fit beauty standards, constantly get evaluated for their skills until they debut, and WHEN they debut, most of the money they earn goes to the company, they maybe earn a bit from sponsorships and fan sites who are sending them gifts, but that also depends on their popularity. They are constantly overworked, they work just like they worked when they were trainees, but now on top of all of that they have A SCHEDULE and also crazy fans that are most likely at some point going to invade their privacy and make them uncomfortable. They are prohibited from dating, partying, smoking, doing drugs. And even when that ban is lifted, they're still in the public eye and it doesn't change anything. That kind of pressure... It damages your mental health so much, look how many idols we've lost because of the burden that the industry has. I know I listed only the negatives, but there aren't many positives to begin with:/ Maybe popularity, and being praised for your skills, if they were that good to begin with? Like Lisa who is praised for being the best dancer, or idk, Baekhyun for being the best vocalist? I still love and listen to kpop, but just imagining what these idols have to go through in order to achieve their goals is frightening to me. It's like they're inside of a machine that never stops overworking them, until they break.

@@emseashels I 100% agree with you - every SM idol is super talented, however they are also all super gorgeous. So many people come to their auditions, so there is no doubt in my mind that they are looking for skills since they have plenty of people to choose from. This doesn't change the simple fact that if someone is not good looking (or at least have potential to be), they unfortunately will not be able to survive at SM. Its not a coincidence that SM idols are known for their perfect visuals. I definitely think that they do focus on skill, but they also focus on visuals since they can afford to be picky with the amount of applicants they get. I just feel like the man who used to work at SM was not being brutally honest when saying that they do not care about visuals. I do understand that they can be more lenient about visuals at the auditions, and I did not mean to come across as hating. I just wanted to point out my opinion, that's all :)
I think they recruit the best visuals and if he/she doesn't work hard or isn't serious they let them go, no matter how beautiful they are.
But if you're naturally talented (even without training eg baekhyun,wendy, chen, Taeil), then they have greater chance over visuals.

Every company go for looks, not just SM, YG is ridiculous to not-so attractive trainees specially to girls, same with JYP tho, and their body shaming. Even for applying a job in Korea they go for looks. Where are most of the talented people at? In the underground scene.. that's why idols are prejudiced by underground artists but seriously I think SM does really look for skills a lot, I mean majority of their artists start off as a child aging 10 to 15 most of their features aren't well developed and can't be seen fully yet. Same before with YG, for their boys trainees, but watching ygtb I think they changed that too.
Duh? looking good is their talent. I don't think anybody with a tiniest bit of understanding about the industry wouldn't compare idols with underground singer-songwriters. Also, YG used to not care about looks. Remember Big Bang and 2NE1? They had some traditionally good looking members but they also had not so good looking ones. And then they realized to make more money they also needed to appeal to the fans who care about looks. And BAAAAM Blackpink happened.

I’m not an sm judge so I really wouldn’t know but just from my experience as a performer being super confident in auditions does actually help you! Even if you’re not that good, when you can see the passion you have for your performance it still makes people want to choose you.

As said by someone (I forgot who it was) who auditioned for SM once, she said that your confidence plays a huge role on how well you'll do. The judges are looking for people who are confident in themselves, and without confidence, how will you perform on stage? Looking confident and showing off your skills with confidence is key. Your skills don't have to be outstanding, but your skills would have to have potential to improve.

in short, there's no plastic procedure on those idols done by SM itself. If anything, its the idol themself who want to "fix" their faces not because SM told them to. Eunhyuk for instance, he's not a flower boy but he's one of those idol whos not ashamed to show off his childhood pics.
I read an ex-SM trainee on Reddit that SM will kinda offer some of their [idols] to do this and that but it depends or it's up to them if they'll change it or not
@@bt3527 well in that instances yes there will be someone from any agencies who will suggest some of the idols to fix their faces, it's just mere suggestions so its up to those idols to consider. For example, Yang Hyunsuk himself will tell some of his idols (female) to fix their face a lil. Suhyun AKMU explicitly talks about that in a talk show.

- Well if your a foreign country "outside korea", *15* is the perfect spot for you to audition but the official minimum requirement is *16* since auditioning and training process can took so long. (let's say you we're given a chance to have a contract to work with after 4 years, so it's easy to say that you somehow 19-20 years old) so it's not too old for them to hire you as rookie solo/group since the lifespan of the contract also counts. but idk for sm if you know, you know. (also the training span depends on your progress)
NATIONALITY?
- Although it is better to have a specific research for your own becuase SME might not open for all countries..
Well do i rely on company's perks?
- Like the ex-judge said. they can accommodate trainees with some essentials that are needed for every individual. but if you audition for other companies, they might not be liable for the perks just like sme's offers. so it id better to have an emergency finance than to trust the perks. You wouldn't know.
Misconceptions about the skills and visuals:
- Well it really depends on your whole appearance, as we know, SME is the home for the powerful vocals and we couldn't deny it. Every company are judging you from your talent and your appearance from top to bottom, if they'll see you some changes, they'll probably recommend you something or leave it naturally. Don't lose hope to your glow-ups!
as my perspective, the comapanies (BIG 3) that i've been lurking infos about what type of skills do they need to find:
for JYPE. they aren't focused on talents that much *BUT* they are judging you through your personality, "why come an audition if you have a bad attitude?"
for YG: the one who can fits the company's concept (badass, dark, bold concept) but they are merely self centered in rap and dance.

I think people have to stop saying SM ONLY cares abt good looks. I mean, they have thousands of peoples going to their audition. It wouldn't be impossible to find someone who is actually talented AND gorgeous.

I think there are 2 things, the first 'audition' which focuses on talent and visuals is just a bonus like the members of Nct Dream who auditioned when they were young maybe (?), While the second is street-casting where they focus on visuals like Taeyong and others. .. about lucas As far as I know he auditioned as the first is model, maybe SM found an idol potential in him that's why Lucas was able to debut, but I also don't know because i dont SM staff,this just my opinion

@@tuyasdebas biaya trainee emang ditanggung SM kok, mungkin ya mereka gak kuat faktor lain deh. Klo masalah finansial uang, aku agak gak setuju sebab klo udah jadi trainee mereka hidup kita udah sama mereka, kayak makan, dll.

스엠은 유영진 때부터 얼굴이 최고 가치가 아니었는데 다들 오지게 부정하네 ㅋㅋ 스엠은 실력없는데 외모 잘났다고 데뷔시킨 경우는 없어요. 오히려 유영진 이후로 꾸준히 스엠 아이돌들의 라이벌 취급 받았던 그룹들에서 외모 끝내주는데 실력없는 아이돌들이 여럿 데뷔했죠. 외모가 뛰어나면 일단 합격하는건 들어와서 배워볼 기회를 주는거지 어차피 재능 없으면 월평가에서 떨어져 나가니까요. 최근에 데뷔한 쇼타로나 지젤도 (사실 난 그들이 외모에 떨어진다고 생각안하지만) 처음 팬덤 생기기 전에는 못생겼다고 욕 엄청 먹었어요. 근데 지금 보면 다들 이쁘고 잘생기고 매력 뿜뿜이죠. 어느 정도 회사에서 스타일링 할 정도만 되면 그 담부터는 실력이에요.
태용이도 첨에 춤 못췄다는 이유만으로 '재능없는데 잘생긴 애 뽑아서 에셈이 실력 만들어준 케이스'로 자꾸 이상하게 설명하는데, 예체능 재능이라는게 아무리 트레이너가 뛰어나도 선천적 재능이 없는데 후천적으로 만들어내지는 절대 못해요. 재능 계발도 정도껏이지. 태용이는 23명 중 메인래퍼, 메인댄서, 작사작곡에, 타멤들이 곡 녹음할 때 프로듀싱 도움까지 주는 앤데 그 빛나는 재능을 에셈이 갈고 닦아 만들어 줬다면서 태용이 평가 절하하면 님들이 오디션에서 떨어지는 이유에 위로라도 받나요?
아래 댓글들 보니까 본인이 오디션에서 합격못하는 이유를 외모때문이라고 생각하면서 자기보다 못하는 애들이 외모때문에 합격했다고 생각하는 내용들이 보이는데, 그렇게 합당하지 않은 불평불만으로 부정적인 생각을 하는 것만으로도 자기 매력을 갉아먹는 거라는 거 알았으면 좋겠네요. 밝고 긍정적이고 건강하게 생각할 수 있는 사람들이 매력적으로 보이게 마련입니다.

If you're talented SM will take you but they'll look for the visuals and train them up. Taeil, Doyoung, Baekhyun, Chen, Xiumin etc. are examples of SM taking in talent. SM just get the cherry on top for trainees all the best just flock to them. Best Visuals, Vocals and Dancers now they are looking for more good rappers with visuals to become an all-rounded company.

Or should there be like specific timings...like 1 month 1 audition or something? ?..... they mentioned about some weekend auditions right?... so will there be auditions every week?... like is it only for sm?
You can try to look it up online at sm’s audition website but I do think that they have weekly auditions

i remember my first time doing an audition it was for sm and the judges were strangely happy then the girl right before was so quiet i couldn't even hear her they kept telling her to be louder then just told her to stop and then looked at me they were so annoyed i messed up on my rap. i was like GOD WHY ME

I personally think it isn't necessarily about looks as it's more about how a person carries them/him/herself - as in, you need confidence to feel beautiful if that makes sense

This is for audition, a lot of people are saying all their artists look good(true). I mean of course if you're gonna debut a group, you're gonna choose someone that is both pretty and talented, they have a lot of trainees to pick at anyways.

Honestly...WHAT'S IN IT FOR THEM?? They have to be skilled, pretty, polite, look healthy, fit beauty standards, constantly get evaluated for their skills until they debut, and WHEN they debut, most of the money they earn goes to the company, they maybe earn a bit from sponsorships and fan sites who are sending them gifts, but that also depends on their popularity. They are constantly overworked, they work just like they worked when they were trainees, but now on top of all of that they have A SCHEDULE and also crazy fans that are most likely at some point going to invade their privacy and make them uncomfortable. They are prohibited from dating, partying, smoking, doing drugs. And even when that ban is lifted, they're still in the public eye and it doesn't change anything. That kind of pressure... It damages your mental health so much, look how many idols we've lost because of the burden that the industry has. I know I listed only the negatives, but there aren't many positives to begin with:/ Maybe popularity, and being praised for your skills, if they were that good to begin with? Like Lisa who is praised for being the best dancer, or idk, Baekhyun for being the best vocalist? I still love and listen to kpop, but just imagining what these idols have to go through in order to achieve their goals is frightening to me. It's like they're inside of a machine that never stops overworking them, until they break.
