sm is really strict, some people said its way easier to win audition in SM, but when you became trainee it will getting hard, you dont know when will you debut.
also, idol is not just "pretty face". you must have enough skill and *strong* characteristic.

i feel like sm do look at visuals but mostly they look at star factor? like i have seen pretty idols who got rejected from sm before and debuted in a different company so it clearly not solely just about looks. like people in the comments saying something about how she is already prettier than some debuted idols, i agree too. But then again, we didnt see her audition clips. maybe there were other more memorable participants at that time and none of her skills or visuals were enough for them to pick her
exactly, they have a lot of trainees that now debuted in different groups. A lot of contributing factors, like charisma or charm during stage perf.
@@Kokobokoko16 yeah, Giselle from aespa doesn't exactly fit the high standards they seem to have but shes extremely talented at dancing and singing. Giselle is gorgeous of course but not in the way koreans usually like.

I have found like audition clips from Estream that is a part of SM. They didn’t want pretty face but they want people who have aura like when you look at them and you feel so interesting in them. As you can see a lot of SM idols are so attractive like when you look at them and you feel something is coming.
@@chowoodzmi3602 i also watched this show Boss in the Mirror. They were interviewing the CEO of ESteem (modeling agency under SM) and followed the audition in NY. And yea, they were looking for Aura instead of just a pretty face.
SM beauty standard is just way too high but don't be sad you can just audition to other company.
*SM has a belief that Talent can be taught that's why they prioritized beauty and potential.

I don’t think SM has high standards when it comes to visuals but they can surely make your visuals high standard when you get into the company. They’re known to have the best plastic surgeon.
SM has their own type when it comes to visual. I mean look at Taeyeon, Irene and Winter. They have similar feature and almost look alike. And its not only visual. They looking for star quality, and personality. People always say that SM is about visual only, I dont understand that because SM idol is really good at singing and dancing.

It’s fairly obvious it’s about looks rather than talent. Just watch any encore stage! There aren’t many groups in the big 3 that are actually full of good singers.

Exactly. I absolutely don't want to sound rude but I'm really astonished by the amount of people hating on sm in this comment section. Millions of people auditions to sm every year and they can't accept everyone right? If they accepted just everyone with good vocals and a decent face they would have way too many trainee right now. They have to make decisions to select someone and in order to do so they have some criteria. Sm is known for visuals yes but let's be honest every sm artist is full of talent and charisma. Sm is universally recognized as the agency with the best vocalists for a reason, they are really strict in judging the vocals too. It's unfair to say "they only care about look and that's why they didn't choose her". You didn't see her audition nor the other people who auditioned so you all can't just assume they excluded her just for her looks 🙄🙄🙄🙄(she is actually a lot pretty). It's really ignorant to do so...do you really think you are better at judging talent than people who do this as a job? Maybe there were other people who were better at singing or had more stage presence than her. I repeat i don't want to sound rude or say she doesn't have talent because i perfectly know i don't have any competence to say so. But you don't too! sm also search for charisma and stage presence in their trainee, they want people who have talent they can work with. When these people look at you they try to understand if you have the nerve to do that job. We all know being an idol is not easy and having talent is not enough. It's an hard life and not for everyone. They make a bet on their trainee so it's obvious they have to be convinced you have what it takes to be a star.
Anyway I don't think sm actually have only extremely beautiful artists, not more then other agencies. Like have you seen the other girls groups not from sm? They have members just as beautiful and perfect. The idols who actually break the absurd korean beauty standards are really few.
In sm there are also artists who doesn't perfectly fit the korean beauty standard. Look at amber liu or even giselle from aespa. And as for male idols there are some of them who are extremely attractive but other are quite normal overall.
It's true that sm looks also at visuals but that's definitely not ALL they want. And don't think for a minute that other agencies are better from this point of view. It's just that if you are a bigger company there are more people who audition for you and this lead to more choices for them and less chance to enter for us. The problem is not sm, the problem is the korean beauty standard that is way to strict and unrealistic. If two people audition for the same agency and they are equally talented at singing but one fit more the standard and is more charismatic can you blame the agency if they choose the last one????? I don't think so. They have to think also about the future of the groups and sadly more beautiful are the idols more likely they are to succeed (obviously they also have to be talented). Even now a lot of people descover nee groups because some of them are a lot attractive and go viral on the social. We are all part of this mechanism too. Agencies just adapt to the society they live in. Change the society and the agency will change their criteria.

SM usually pick from visual first because they believe that talent can be trained. That's why people said their training system is extreme and even harder than survival shows, but they also won't turned blind if they found someone who is so talented, for example like Shotaro (new member of NCT). At first, K-netizen judge his visual so hard and said he isn't 'SM type' of visual, but once he started his debut stage people is blown with his dance and performance and now K-netizen grow fond of him and being whipped with his talent and cute smile.

Many people commenting as if they are really expert as a "judge" on entertainment companies like SMent. Sometimes visual or pretty look doesn't define if you are good candidate as an idol. SMent known as top notch on vocals and stuffs, what if she have no some vocals for SM standard? ( Well, I didn't know, even you) SM is one of the big company in KPOP industry, so it is very hard to pass. We don't know if there is more prettier person out there who doesn't passed on SMent audition. Grow up people.
And for you, your pretty and maybe you are not fated on SMent, try to find another company if you really want to pursue being Kpop Idol. Goodluck!

@@ericacella1180 indeed and idols who passed on big company like SMent is not only lucky but also talented indeed or full packaged (and also have strong personality) . They first goes to the eye of the needle before passing. Even if you passed as trainee on SMent, you will face challenges more until you debut, that's why many trainees leave the agencies before debuting (sometimes they give up because of hard training and stuffs)

many comments here saying SM rejected her even though she's pretty... Wendy got into SM but was rejected by CUBE bcuz of her visuals. SM looks for a nice visual AND essentially an " *artist aura* " (if you watched Esteem - SM's model company audition video you'll know). Pretty people have an advantage but you have to train hard as Lee Soman or who ever said before "talent can be taught"

Honestly speaking, they can’t. It’s just how the world works. People with prettier faces are actually found pretty because our brain finds them easier to process and remember. So I guess that’s just the way it is.
For other company idk but this is just how SMe works that's the reason they r called the "visual garden" ya u might in terms of audition ur skills is more important but sm takes visual more seriously. And some trainees also comes from the street when the staff sees them very beautiful or handsome
lookism is very extreme in south korea. sm (and many other kpop companies) looking for “pretty faces” is the result from that. any idols that don’t fit the crazy beauty standards get a lot of internet hate/bullying (umji from gfriend for example even tho she was always pretty).

Yeah i sign myself as a kpoper not for that pathetic thing although they may have the reason doing so to seek the chance for idol in modeling. And by that, the whole capitalism idea is messed up, there is no respect and the standard is kinda fool oops :( i actually lost my respect if i heard that kpop is about beauty standard and other nasty things. At the end, if human have their clear mind will actually leave or not even touch that kind of industry, and here i am still stanning over the effort of how the idol are passionate in singin, dancin, or entertaining. But not so hard stannin like 3 years ago, i choose selectively and even more into the underground artists.
Trainees aren’t allowed to be exposed public before debuting so if you’re a youtuber that has many followers before auditioning will be no.

They do make some exceptions. A few yrs back, a youtuber passed the sm audition and became a trainee but she had to delete her videos and stop posting.b

I am a girl with strong jawline too :)... At first I hate it bcoz I look like man, but one day my friend told me tht she obsessed with my jawline. I ask her why? She said "don't u know *western* super model? They all have strong jawline like urs, the Greek gods jawline type. Omg I wish I have ur jawline so I can do modeling" lol... She always say how much she like my jawline every time I meet her until it gave me courage and confidence. Now obviously I'm not a model *bcoz I generally awkward in front of camera* but I do attract many people. Boys and Girls be like "you somehow have handsome feminine and charismatic aura, u are not ordinary boring type of pretty, somehow we need to look u more than twice"..
Well tht definitely boost my confidence :)
And somehow my strong jawline help me to get rid of bad people bcoz maybe they will think twice to joke about me... Lol
But I do still have hard times when I need to fulfill general beauty standards. But I guess I don't need to, because being unique is my own beauty standard

SM is known for having top visuals and top talents so its no shock that they really screen every detail. For example, NCT dream, those boys started in SM from a very young age and the competition must have been tough.You need to really shine and have the star power. Also, idols are known for the perfect face that's why it's really cutthroat since you're not only judged on how talented you are but looks matter. I think Giselle of Aespa has a very similar face to you but you know what its your first time and you did amazing. Goodluck!!

This actually makes me sad at the same time because Im planning to audition and I think we have the same face shape and yours is actually a bit smaller. I thought kf this beforehand but I shook off the thought but now I realize face shape is actually a huge factor to be accepted in entertainments. I hope this standard changes.

I mean they do look for visuals and but they priortize talent or potential over visuals .eg Shotaro, Giselle .There are many examples of visual auditioners and trainees who debuted in other company.Look at SM rookies they are just far from any normal kpop idols of their time. If you are still interested you may audition in other company too. And English is perfect as you. Have a beautiful day ahead.❤
