Droves of Korean teenagers sign up with K-pop academies with dreams of becoming the next BTS, BlackPink, TWICE or Red Velvet. At 24, Yanagi Mizuho was not just a late-starter, but a foreigner - a Japanese graduate in linguistics.
Making it through the auditions with entertainment agency Star Road Entertainment was just the beginning, though, of a tough road filled with sweat, tears, diets and gruelling training. And no guarantee of a debut.
Star Road Entertainment manages K-Pop duo JBJ95, Kenta Takada and Kim Sang-Gyun.

Yeah this is so sad
Yeah she learned so much for nothing. Hope she finds a better agency or a new career.
True
Me too😔
Manisha Bhaittrai With the agency it’s basically a whole team, who publishes the music and gives themes and what not. Even in holly wood to get famous you need to have a label to publish the music. Without an agency or team you might not be successful, at least in Korea. In the US idk
As someone who did ballet. Yes pushing a person down for splits is a thing but WITHIN REASON! Yes we push splits down because it is ballet but we also DONT WANT TO HURT THEM! If the dancer is screaming out of pain YOU STOP! You do it again later in their own pace that doesn’t damage the dancer! The way the instructor literally dragged Mizuho could damage her ham strings and damage her leg muscles! This can even lead to permanent damage! Yes push your dancers for them to become better. But not in the method where it physically damages them! Also emotionally too! This is disgusting.
Exactly! I'm not a dancer; I'm a classically trained singer, but it's the same with us...We never push the voice beyond what it can handle. If you feel pain, it means something is wrong and forcing yourself to sing in such a way can lead to permanent damage.
Our bodies are our instruments. We have to treat it with respect.
they've wanted to become idols since kindergarden.
me: didn't even know kpop was a thing till i was 14-
edit: mum I'm famous ._.
I figured out what it was at 8
I was 11
And I discovered them at 43 yo😊 Not the girl/ boy singer-dancers but the real band with instruments. CNBLUE was the first one as I realized: "Oh..these boys are amazing. They music is really good. They're talented musicians etc..." It happens that they started with this 'IDOL' things too. Their visuals are TOP and their natural beauty is well known. They are a real deal. Thanks God. Although they're not this kind of group, they did have faced a lot of difficulties at the beginning. They worked hard just like others. More than others. Yonghwa, the leader slept just 2 hours per day even after their successful debut in 2010. They did more than 100 street busking in Japan before debut where no one was watching them. Just passing by. They were nothing but now...they had 17k audiences in just a concert. They're what they're now. They are still working hard and they deserve our love and support.
Fighting 💪🏼

facts
my friend is a kpop trainee at kq (ateez's management company) and he said it's not as bad as the girls :/ (he texts me occasionally)
i have turned gay from eunwoo omg that’s heartbreaking
@@TheNuvia1210 idk if this is true or not but he says that some entertainment companies are more biased towards male trainees compared to female trainees
It’s so annoying how the dance instructor seems proud of herself when she points out how some of these girls work for over 100 hours and still get cut. What’s there to be smiling about girl?
She's arrogant, that's why.
when i was younger, i always wanted to be a kpop idol. i would always push myself to go through the diets that they went through, training myself like how they did. but it was so hard, too hard for me. the idols that are idols now are so strong to endure the pain they went/go through.
I’m conflicted. I like a lot of K-Pop, but I absolutely hate how the industry treats their trainees and idols.
That's why idol's and trainee's deserve respect, we have to support them because their the ones who are putting all the work in, they're the ones who are sacrificing youth and freedom, we have to treat them with compassion, and maybe in the future when Kpop gains more exposure in the western, companies can change too.
Some company are sh*t really
cherry blossom are you kidding? They’re being forced into doing this.. the only people disrespecting them are those that make them do this and those that glorify celebrity culture.. the world doesn’t need a million Disney-style performers but hey if there’s money to make then you can be certain that someone is taking advantage of these young people
I know, I think it’s quite sad really. People shouldn’t need to suffer this much to be happy. I mean gosh yeah they’re beautiful and I really like how they look, but I would never do that cause I think u should love yourself. And if you wanna become a famous singer there are others ways,
I mean, look at Adele she doesn’t have a perfect body or anything but me and a huge amount of people love her for her voice and creative ideas. Or even Billie Eilish. She’s my favorite artist for her voice and songs and the fact that she is not perfect and has her own problems and that she is super honest about it just makes me admire her more.
It’s also so sad when you realise how little money they get from it. I remember a while ago seeing the breakdown of SM Entertainment’s income, and I can’t remember seeing a good amount going to the idols. Some amazing music and talent comes out of Kpop, but it is heartbreaking knowing what harsh treatment is behind it all. There’s so much that we don’t see that goes on behind it all, and I understand that there is bad in many industries across the world, but things hit harder when you see or hear of it - it really brings it back to reality. I wish people could do what they love with the talent they have, and not be pushed over the brink to fit a particular structure or mould. It’s like some forget that they are people and not just idols to be trained and make a name of the companies.
omg her screams were so full of pain and suffering, I can’t believe they have to endure this stuff, I feel ill hearing and seeing them force her into a split and then celebrating being underweight
i know. its sickening. companies like that should be put out of business. its inhumane
Lucy Link I got so mad when the girl that was pushing her down said ''Hey I'm not even pushing you. Why are you crying?'' and then said a few seconds later ''go down lower!'' can't they see she can't and it hurts like what is wrong with them and I felt so bad I even started crying when they started celebrating they were underweight

@@Meyb4l EXACTLYY, I think everyone here is overreacting. It's normal especially if you are a dancer lmao
you can see how much an idol went through before he/she debuted.please respect all the idols.they have gone through so much pain.besides i dont think all kpop agencies are rude to their trainees and good luck to those who are auditioning to be an idol👍
being JUST a trainee isn't easy but everyone takes risk for the sake of their dreams
It’s okay if you’re not flexible. Not every idol is flexible such as Nayeon from Twice. Why they pushed the girls too hard ? 😔
i mean it could be to make the company more known, like if they're flexible people are like "oh did you see this idol that is so flexible?" kinda like that
They'll be singing and dancing for quite an amount of time per day, if you're not flexible then you'll get stiffer and stiffer which can affect your performance on stage.. if you dont have charm/charisma then the only thing you can rely on is your performance
Agree!
That was terrifying. Little by little let her go down and be flexible. I mean she screamed and cried. Also said it hurt a lot😥
The fans will notice and bitch about it
She got the best feedback but she was the one who got kicked out??? Tf???
probably because she was older than the others (24), i heard sori also couldn't debut with yg (i think) because she's almost 30. But who knows, i hope she does get to debut i would totally stan her
I knowww that's were I really got confused
@@yeee9238 thats so crazy to think about, considering bts' age difference(in the beginning it was 15 at youngest and 20 at oldest). I guess that just goes to show how rare and how lenient just that amount of leeway can be in the kpop industry. Just age can be that way...
we only heard one other persons feedback. maybe the others were really good
I think if you're a trainee you need to have the talent and skills not just knowledge on how to dance and perform because companies have high ideal standards that you need to keep up and they are not thinking twice whether they'll pick you because they are always looking for the best. It's harsh but that's reality. And it doesn't mean that you get the best compliments you're safe no sometimes they compliment those that did not pass the test just to lessen the negativity or discouragement of that person.
Guys I have seen many of you have commented that you wanna debut as a kpop idol. Think twice why you wanna become an idol? Just because your role model is also a kpop idol? Or you're into kpop? Or what?? Please don't change yourself, your own self because you love kpop idols. You don't need to copy them. Just get your dream job and work for it. Trust me you'll definitely become happy at the end! Be who you really are! You deserve the success
I respect this idol cuz she could literally do anything to become an idol and she's so determined 💜
I don't understand, she was the only one praised, and the only one who didn't make it.
I think it’s buttering her up before they dish out the real punishment which is kicking her from the debut. It’s to soften the blow when she realizes she’s the only one that won’t make it.
I think they also did it on purpose for the other girls. They knew she wasn't going to cut it, and praised her while belittling the ones who did. A bit of manipulation. 'Oh look, she did great but she was cut, I have to work harder and be better than her so that they don't kick me out.'
@@liliaalvarado7040 that way of thinking is really smart
Lilia Alvarado I agree with you but I also think that it’s saying even if they are praised and do good it doesn’t always guaranteed that they’ll
1. Debut
2. Be successful
3. Wont regret it later
And much more despite their hard work
Hmmm ur right
i used to get insecure by looking at all these kpop idols on instagram.
they all seemed so perfect, beautiful, skinny, talented and extremely happy. but nobody knows what they have to sacrifice in order to maintain this lifestyle.
Illusion. It's all a careful illusion.
Crimson Riot Yes, there will always be people who have it worse. But does that change the fact that they are suffering as well? Seriously, it's hella annoying when you put out a problem and someone goes: "YEAH, bUT thErE ARe PeOPLe ThAT-"
YES, I KNOW. BUT A PROBLEM IS A PROBLEM. Go be stupid somewhere else -.-
I am a teen and I think I'm underweight cuz I'm the only girl that is 30++ kilogrammes
@Crimson Riot this isn't a competition about who has it worse sis.
@Crimson Riot I'm pretty sure that you shouldn't compare sufferings with one thing and another. A suffering is a suffering. If you get your entire limb fractured versus having a nail ripped off, would you say you can only complain about one of them? That's stupid.
K-pop Idols are the most hardworking one..they literally deserve lots of respect and love ❤️
Got to appreciate how hard these people work to make their dreams come true. The kpop idols who are successful now have gone through a lot to get to where they are.
kids that is NOT the way to get your splits lower. it IS however a good way to tear your inner thigh muscles
bangtansonyeondamn exactly what i was going to say. It’s a gradual (yes. slightly painful) process. but it should never bring you to screaming and tears. Be gentle with your body... and how they pulled her out of it at the end! they were just wanting to tear her muscles
@@stephanieblosser5490 oh my god i know i cringed so hard when they yanked her out of it. i have been a dancer for 22 years and thank god not once has someone forced me into the middle splits like that. its so 80s to do something like that :/
I know haven't done cheerleading in years but that is a BIG no no
Pushing with a lot of weight could be harmful but you can see in the video she just has one hand on the girl's body so I doubt she's pushing with much force. I think the girl is mostly screaming from the pain of gravity. Partner stretching like this can be very helpful, but I've never screamed from pain before pushing a middle split.
Stephanie Blosser I’m pretty sure it was another trainee that pulled her out of the position thinking she was helping her :(

Honestly being a kpop idol seems like hell. I’m a kpop stan (stay) but like I can never imagine what kpop idols go through and go maybe not even debut in the end. It looks like just straight up hell
plus you don’t get paid at all unless you repay all the debt you owe to your company for training.. so you’re also broke
omg this breaks my heart. Like when yeonjun from TXT cried telling we debuted I always thought like "yeah you debuted why do you have to cry". But now I know... Its insane how they work so hard for YEARS but still not debut.
And this is just what they allowed to be shown on camera. Imagine what goes on behind the scenes.
Jeez K-pop sometimes can be quite mysterious
Dumb and stupid....is it worth it ?? Don't think so......on top of that most will go for plastic surgeries........they don't look natural selves.......hair colours and so on....... it's sad they 're so insecure with themselves .and that lead to all others.......tq
Shirley Cameron dont say dumb and stupid. It’s really disgraceful. Koreans have insecurities that they would change anything to make their insecurities patched up.
Shirley Cameron k firstly, it’s not dumb and stupid if being an idol is really what they want. There’s a lot of pressure, of course, and they are overworked, but when they debut, they’re happy. Secondly, the different hair colours are the concepts for the songs and albums. No one is being tortured with hair dye, it’s not a bad thing despite dying hair endlessly will damage their natural hair. Lastly, most of them go through hard times. It’s a lot of pressure being a trainee and hard work must be put into it. Although some are insecure, many are confident and they encourage others. Being insecure doesn’t lead others into being insecure.
Shirley Cameron you probably don’t think it’s worth the hard work because being an idol isn’t your dream. But many young people are happy when they sing, dance, and perform. The job that you want, the dream that you want, what you want to do in life, are you willing to work hard for it? If you are, then you’re just like those trainees. They think it’s worth it because they’re grasping at their dreams, and you will too, when you’re in the process of grabbing ahold of your dream
5’0 weight

Pretty sure you have to be a certain height aswell to be in the industry so the weight requirement is actually not indiscriminate

Every time I want to become a K-pop idol I come back to this same video
Many foreigners want to become idols, but in Korea, when selecting foreign idols, most Asian people are cast (Japanese and Chinese), or if they are Korean like Rosé, but their nationality is New Zealand. In Thailand, people with white faces are usually cast. (Minnie, Lisa, for example) And mixed blood is possible. It is actually difficult to debut as an idol in Korea unless you are particularly good at singing. You have to be fluent in Korean. There are many people who want to be an idol in Korea, so it is highly competitive. This is the reality
actually a little correction, in thailand its people with chinese descent that are mostly casted. Native thais are rare
why did the DANCE TEACHER critique the trainee’s vocals??? thats for the VOCAL TRAINER to do, she has no experience with singing and shouldn’t be qualified to tell them how to sing
Maybe she has experience so don't judge when u don't know.
@@loonaroaches even if she did have experience i don't think it would be okay to shit on the trainee's vocals and not give them critique to improve their singing.
@@moonlitgalaxy5940 Learning to take criticism is a big part in life.
Magnaut Sana criticism isn’t only pointing out flaws, its also about giving advice to improve on those flaws. i do agree that being able to take criticism is a big part of life, and these girls are taking it well. however the trainer isn’t giving advice at all and solely telling them what they’re doing wrong - in a very harsh manner. if it is criticism, it’s not very good criticism
@*화월6446 i never said kpop trainers were idiots, i was pointing out the fact that the dance trainer was giving the trainees harsh "critique" on their singing - something she probably, if we're being honest, has little experience of training. therefore, it shouldn't be right that she's the one to give them critique on their singing
“I COUDNT EVEN DRINK WATER” Omg thats too far ..
Eun Kyung TV! Yeah that’s too far
ikr! jimin from bts (bighit company) had a water diet, bighit still let him drink water.. Thats too far
Without water, it’s so easy to get dehydrated and pass out. Water is more important than food, plus it’s so necessary for the body. That’s just sad. Kpop diets aren’t healthy on its own, but this “no water” diet is another level.
The fact that they do a lot of physical work like hard dancing just makes it worse.
Water has no calories and helps you lose weight....

Those who criticize Lisa for being too strict of a mentor. I dare them to watch this and still say the same thing about Lisa.
Exactly
Lisa's tutoring is normal .Im not even a dancer but I used to practice for a performance at school with my teacher and my teacher is much much worse than her and we are not even dancing that much
She has to be strict. But she’s not like this dance instructor who makes the dancers feel bad about themselves. Lisa gives motivation and wants the dancers to do well and I respect her for that. I wouldn’t mind having her as my dance instructor.

Momo can’t split but she becomes a kpop. And she got success.
When she was pushing down on that girl doing the split, does she even realize how detrimental it could’ve been to that girl physically?! Forcing someone when they’re not flexible and haven’t warmed up is beyond dangerous!
And how the other trainer pulled her?! That is just horrible!
My thigh tendons were damaged because of that. I was learning to dance when I was 11 I guess, and they replaced our regular teacher for a day. there isn't a problem of being strict but telling them these words: "i'll kick you out instead", "i won't let you debut" "you make my ears hurt" hurts like hell bruh.
but the people in the comments saying this are met by immense hate telling that she is a dance teacher and whatnot, giving constructive criticism is what she should be doing, but instead she is abusing her with words. Yeah, I would prefer to work hard before auditioning to a big company. Because there your sweat and tears are worth it. Plus u don't have to pay the company debt after debuting
It's kind of annoying how so many companies are popping up wanting to train idols and once they debut, they don't have enough money to actually promote them. Training an idol is an investment but if you don't put anything to promote them then they'll dissappear and you'll just keep losing money.
@@ambya6431 every group has to pay the company debt unless they earn so much that the company doesn't care about the debt. Even twice i think they just finished the company's debt around.. Last year(?) But they said it somewhere about getting their first full paycheck
Gummey I’m pretty sure twice paid off their debt within 2 years. I mean they were literally the hottest girl group when tt came out.they had many comebacks in one year, did a lot of promotions and concerts. So it’s impossible that they got their first pay check last year.
I've watched this show on netflix called 100 humans and they did a test study on two groups of people trying to toss some plates or something, I forgot, but anyway, in one round - one group received bad critique and in the next round they did far worst but in the second group, they received positive comments and actually improved in the second round. My point is that constantly giving negative comments to these girls doesn't do any good. The teacher isn't even giving constructive criticism, she's just telling the girls the consequences of their actions.
That's the real scenario of these companies... WE DON'T KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT OUR IDOLS
Forcing a split is terribly really really bad you can rip/stretch your skin on the inner thigh also your muscles and joints can be risked of injury so overall never force a split or push someone further down what they can do it enough

it broke my heart when they *celebrated* being underweight.
50kg is not underweight for a lot of people. Even the girl who was like 46 I wouldn't be worried about the weight on its own. The diet slightly, and the schedule is a bit too strict, but other than that this really isn't as bad as people are making it out to be and as others have said, it isn't representative of a lot of companies. It's just that over in the west we tend to encourage people to give up & not bother with anything, eat whatever and not exercise. Then we try to force them to accept the way they look because trying to lose weight and/or getting a cosmetic procedure done is evil and makes you fake. Generally speaking. There are certainly some notes we should be taking from these companies.
50kg and below is not really under weight for a girl her height and age especially in Asia. (i weigh 48kg btw)
it's only underweight if you're tall-ish.
not only that, but bmi is catered to caucasian people; asians and black people do not experience the symptoms of being underweight until a significantly lower bmi.
Yeah, bmi doesn't take into account very much at all. If you have a lot of muscle your weight and therefore bmi might be quite high even if you're healthy with no excess fat. I'm around 58kg, 175cm, white if it matters & I do not look underweight at all, & my bmi would suggest I'm almost underweight. At my goal weight my bmi would be like 16 and 18 is considered the borderline for being underweight. And this is using the nhs calculator which checks other factors too. But I have a healthy diet, exercise a lot, no serious health issues, low body fat and some visible muscle. The only people bmi really works for is people who have a lot of excess fat in which case they'd already know they're overweight.
I get that BMI isn't a perfect indicator of health and that there are differences in what's considered a healthy BMI for Asians vs Caucasians. But we all heard her describe her diet, she's eating something like 300 calories a day ? I'm not sure how we all aren't in agreement--that's just not enough calories for an adult woman who is already slim. I feel like this discussion happens all the time in kpop Fandom, a kpop idol or trainee will reveal their diet and instead of acknowledging that they aren't eating much, the discussion slides into how inaccurate BMI can be or how that idol is just naturally thin--they're literally explaining their very low calorie diets. They're thin because they eat very carefully and exercise a lot. It's almost like there's this mass delusion that all kpop idols are just all naturally thin--what a coincidence. Furthermore, their training just seems bizarre. What benefit is there to exercising 7 hours a day, everyday--at some point, you run into diminished returns. Even pro athletes don't train that much, because at some point it just doesn't help you improve. You hear stories about trainees waiting 6 or 7 years to debut and its just baffling--they're training to sing and dance, not to perform brain surgery. I know they also have language and ethics training, but it just seems like an excuse to put the trainees further into the companies debt or to keep other companies from snatching up talented trainees. And if they allowed trainees to debut younger, that extends the idols career (I don't think most idols really work past 30 or so?) and thus brings in more money for the company. Anyway, something there doesn't add up, and I'm sure I don't understand the bigger picture of the idol industry--that's by design, of course. I'm sure it's in the companies interest to keep the most unethical parts of training out of the public eye. I just wish the Fandom thought a little more critically about the industry instead of believing whatever an idol tells them. Just because you see an idol eating on camera or talking about how much they love food--it doesn't mean they eat like that all the time.

What scares me the most is that really small companies (not all) treat their trainees in the most inhumane way possible and usually get away with it because they’re not very well known and people don’t talk about them.
The fact that the first few seconds were allowed to be on the internet says that they do something worse off camera.
Anyway, Miss Mizuho is doing fine now. Apparently, in 2021 she was on a vacation in Spain
I'm so confused.
"You're voice is terrible, I wouldn't let you debut."
