John King you know Madonna called him up to New York to join a band right ? You know that she had 14 songs written by the time he arrived and it inspired him to write songs ?
I wonder how she achieved this sound. Her vocal performance in Like A Prayer is so different from everything she's done before or since. A raw state of emotion.
Singing lessons. If you're referring to the echoey sound, that's because she wanted to record it acapella with a church organ, which they didn't do, but that's the effect (singing in an empty church) that they settled on. In the finished track there are no instruments on the versus, which you don't think about until you go back and listen to it and realise it's just her voice and a "backing choir" melody. If you can hear it, there's a faint ratting percussion sound in the background (Luis Conte ratting bracelets on a stick), but that's it. And it's that contrast that makes the song.
This is the holy grail for true original Madonna fans! It's almost a shame that the 'demo' vocal was the one used on the final record... but Madonna's own "aaah's" and harmonies are total gold to hear for the first time. Unlike so many false 'demos', (aside from the fact it's posted on Pat's channel), you can truly hear it is a demo, and that IS Leonard's work. The electronic production is exactly the same sound as Who's That Girl, which was only the previous year. The digital drums, toms and bass synth are so clearly from the same equipment. You can tell for sure that this is what Pat used before they decided to get real 'live' musicians in for the final fantastic LP mix. This is absolutely amazing to hear though, and I love it just as much (and a little bit more) for all those reasons!
@@astrolabe1976 Because I like to hear alternate vocal takes! Generally speaking that's what a demo would be. A trial run before the actual recording of the record.

I gotta be honest. I thin, Stephen Bray lost his touch to create a classic Madonna track now. I could be wrong though. Butt he recent Breakfast Club music isn't anything to write home about. I almost feel the same about Nile Rodgers. his hey day as a producer was int eh early to mid-eighties. His work wirth Daft punk was eh. Patrick Leonard she should definitely bring back. Finally should should reconnect musically with Stuart price on new music. I know he worked on the current tour but her last great album was Confessions. let's face it.
I just dug up this random quote from an interview with Patrick Leonard, can't remember the year but he's talking about working with Madonna in 1989: “Madonna would write the lyrics in an hour, the same amount of time it took me to write the music (laughs). And then she'd sing it. We'd do some harmonies, she'd sing some harmony parts, and usually by three or four in the afternoon, she was gone. That's how "Like a Prayer" was written, and then the next day we wrote "Cherish," and then the next day we wrote "Dear Jessie." And that's how it was. We wrote the album in less than two weeks. Because we wrote a song a day, and we didn't change them. And oftentimes the vocal that she did was the lead vocal, we didn't even change the lead vocal. That was it. She sang it. It was done. We learned that from her album "True Blue"... "Live to Tell"'s vocal was a demo, and so were a lot of others. It's not that they were demo vocals -- they were just never sung more than once. I put the track together, she would sing it, and that was it. We learned from that. This idea of a ritualistic vocal session doesn't make any sense. You perform now. You know the song: perform it! And oftentimes, the energy that's there because you're in this creative space is much more pure than when you've thought about it and worked on it and practiced it in your car and all that stuff. It's like, eh, come on. Blue collar, once again. Get to work!”

I couldn’t love this more. Thank you.
This is everything!!! The most iconic song/album! These demos ate amazing! THANK YOU Patrick for these and for making one of the albums that gave me so much joy and awesome memories of my teenage years! 💖
I can't believe how amazing it is to hear this, never thought I would have this chance! Thank you so so much for giving us this precious gift!
Thank you so much Mr Leonard! I don't know if Madonna knows about this but those thieves selling your work deserve nothing but ruin!!
who's selling this? you have a link? what is it like an eBay auction?
@@DJMichaelAngelo Some vengeful witch is selling several tapes on a famous auction site. I cannot give you any links since that would be disrespectful to Mr Leonard.
@@hectorbravoreyes844 *lol - uh oh! sounds like drama :p why is she vengeful I wonder, does she have a stake in the royalties/publishing or is she owed money? either way I just searched on eBay and found zero results for "Patrick Leonard" that seemed to match anything that was like unreleased tapes or materials or whatever....? I think PL said in another RUclips video that the auction ended today (7/22/19) wonder how much $$ it went for
@@hectorbravoreyes844 are we reading the same article? lol -- because it's obvious that Darlene Lutz won these items in court fair & square, despite her royal Madgesty's bullying efforts to squash them, with her army of well-paid lawyers! some might view the sale of the demo tapes & letters (and other things Madonna cast aside willingly) as unethical, but it is 100% legal, nothing was "stolen" so yeah....hope she earns enough to pay off her lawyers & medical bills!
@@DJMichaelAngelo Fair ??? For who ? Tupac's memory ? Rosie ? Fair to expose private letters to the world ? (Would u love that for yourself ?) Not sure about "fair" for everyone, but if you say so... 🤔🤔🤔
this song was born an anthem already
What an incredible gift! 📦 Thank you Mr. Leonard. 😀 🙀 🐶 🎉 🎂 🎈 ❤️ 🙏 😘 😊 👌 🌈
Thank you so much for sharing these demos. My favourite album of all time. ❤️
My heart can hardly take this. Thank you so much. There are no words.
The Best SONG EVER in history
Madonna has to work with Pat Leonard
The Best songs are with the 2 of them together
IN HISTORY ❤️
You are totally right. Her best songs are those she has written with Patrick Leonard.
Really? In history?
I totally agree with you. "Like a prayer" is one of the greatest albums of all times.
The drum and bass programming is reminiscent of its immediate predecessor "Who's That Girl"
Thank you Patrick... you are an amazing musician ❤️
É de arrepiar! Magnífico!
Wow! So the version that we all know and love is basically just a remixed version of this. Same exact vocals and everything. I love seeing the song creation process!
Jadore cette version❤️vous etes une machine a tube.. Merci pour tout mr léonard
The 1 dislike is Darlene Lutz.

Hi Patrick, thank you so much for this wonderful present. "Like a prayer" is an immortal hit featured on an immortal record ❤️
Always so interesting to hear how a song was originally conceived. Thanks, Patrick.
