- The demo of Like a Prayer from the day it was written.
To be crystal clear if it isn't already:I'm referring to the music itself and not the physical cassette it's on. If people want to bid on that cassette and are willing to pay for it, then by all means feel free to.
PAtrick Leonard : we miss your magical touch on Madonna's music
he's still alive.
yes but Stephen Bray too please (her real talent-scout & springboard)
Amen to that - I’m tired of these r n b / DJs she works with now plus the rent a rappers 😥
John King you know Madonna called him up to New York to join a band right ? You know that she had 14 songs written by the time he arrived and it inspired him to write songs ?
@@gerryowen4200 are you talking about her rumoured new album ?
Imagine Patrick Leonard, Stephen Bray, Rick Nowels, Nile Rogers and Madonna making an album together in the same room. Would be a masterpiece 🙌🏻💖💋
all the producers are men, huh
@@sufyanlowel4631sexist much? …..
I gotta be honest. I thin, Stephen Bray lost his touch to create a classic Madonna track now. I could be wrong though. Butt he recent Breakfast Club music isn't anything to write home about. I almost feel the same about Nile Rodgers. his hey day as a producer was int eh early to mid-eighties. His work wirth Daft punk was eh.
Patrick Leonard she should definitely bring back. I also think someone she should reconnect with musically should be Marius DeVries. Orbit gets too much credit for Ray of Light. I think it's DeVries who made that album sonically great. Because it's missing on Music & MDNA. Don't get me wrong, Orbit was good but he had solid songs to work with written by M & Patrick Leonard. Finally should should reconnect musically with Stuart price on new music. I know he worked on the current tour but her last great album was Confessions. let's face it.
Put Jane Child in that mix.
It's been said forever that the final version of LAP was her first take vocal. This proves it, it's exactly the same which is NUTS! You guys were magic together.
Same for Live To tell
Bowie was the same . One or two takes and that was it. Done.
@@johnristheanswer
Madonna likes things as simple as possible
@@johnristheanswer Wowwwwww. That could not be further from the truth. Lennon said working with him on "FAME" was.. a challenge bc he was always tweaking it. Same w/ Queen..Google it. Or not. i LIVE for Bowie, and would be THRILLED to bring the receipts. He was such a perfectionist that he constantly re-arranged old songs & re-released them.
@@alysiamerdavid-wasser9165 you're referring to " tweaking " the lyrics up to the last minute. The " take " is the recording if course. Lennon only contributed the odd word on Fame as he was working in another studio at the time ....
Greatest pop song in the history of music!
David Sargent period!
Agreed
Madonna in her best of pop in her career i feel... 1985-92
David Sargent is Vogue
This one and Thriller are the best musically and vocally!!
Madonna deserves a Grammy for this.
Can’t believe that after 30 years we can finally hear first demo of this work of art
The lead vocal is the final vocal.
We know.
This is the holy grail for true original Madonna fans!
It's almost a shame that the 'demo' vocal was the one used on the final record... but Madonna's own "aaah's" and harmonies are total gold to hear for the first time.
Unlike so many false 'demos', (aside from the fact it's posted on Pat's channel), you can truly hear it is a demo, and that IS Leonard's work. The electronic production is exactly the same sound as Who's That Girl, which was only the previous year.
The digital drums, toms and bass synth are so clearly from the same equipment. You can tell for sure that this is what Pat used before they decided to get real 'live' musicians in for the final fantastic LP mix.
This is absolutely amazing to hear though, and I love it just as much (and a little bit more) for all those reasons!
why is it a shame they used the first take? She doesnt like doing multiple takes
@@astrolabe1976 Because I like to hear alternate vocal takes!
Generally speaking that's what a demo would be. A trial run before the actual recording of the record.
@@sarge9733 A demo is a rough sketch/not fully produced version of the song, often used to give to an other artist (like Sia does).
Its not the first run in the studio recording the final version
The demo can go through quite a few changes (lyrics, melody) or with some its just fully produced
As music making technology has gotten better and cheaper, demos have become more polished over time, especially if you have a digital audio workstation/home studio
But back in the 80s you couldnt waste the expensive studio time
Who’s that girl is a great album but to go from that to like a prayer in a year or so is a major step up
I produced and engineered recordings for 25 years and in all that time and among all those artists, I witnessed skills like Madonna’s quite infrequently, perhaps 4 or 5 times. She was an extraordinary talent as both a vocalist and lyricist. However, the material of the last decade or two just doesn’t have the same finesse or musicality.
Thanks so much Patrick, for sharing those gems with true Madonna fans!
You both should work with her again
My gosh the backing vocals with Madonna alone are so beautiful, ethereal, child-like, and spiritual sounding! They just take you to that heavenly place that only few songs can do. I might even prefer this to the choir that ended up on the final version.
Donna and Niki - frankly she has never been the same without them.
@@thomasszymanski1107FACTS
I was 12 years old when I purchased the LAP cassette album. It was like a treasure and I remember seeing Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray all over the sleeve with patchouli scent. The names stuck in my head ever since. The pop perfection of Like a Prayer (single) hooked the 12 year old onto Madonna for life. Express Yourself (video version) became an obsession.
This song transcends. It is timeless art. It builds and concludes repeatedly throughout the 5 minutes. Absolutely beautiful melodies. The album version had complex but impeccable arrangements and production. Needless to say, Madonna’s best song.
Madonna + Patrick Leonard = MAGIC
I wish they could write more songs together
You're telling me the final version's vocal is the ORIGINAL VOCAL? Queen.
I just dug up this random quote from an interview with Patrick Leonard, can't remember the year but he's talking about working with Madonna in 1989:
“Madonna would write the lyrics in an hour, the same amount of time it took me to write the music (laughs). And then she'd sing it. We'd do some harmonies, she'd sing some harmony parts, and usually by three or four in the afternoon, she was gone.
That's how "Like a Prayer" was written, and then the next day we wrote "Cherish," and then the next day we wrote "Dear Jessie." And that's how it was. We wrote the album in less than two weeks.
Because we wrote a song a day, and we didn't change them. And oftentimes the vocal that she did was the lead vocal, we didn't even change the lead vocal. That was it. She sang it. It was done.
We learned that from her album "True Blue"... "Live to Tell"'s vocal was a demo, and so were a lot of others. It's not that they were demo vocals -- they were just never sung more than once.
I put the track together, she would sing it, and that was it. We learned from that. This idea of a ritualistic vocal session doesn't make any sense. You perform now. You know the song: perform it! And oftentimes, the energy that's there because you're in this creative space is much more pure than when you've thought about it and worked on it and practiced it in your car and all that stuff. It's like, eh, come on. Blue collar, once again. Get to work!”
@@DJMichaelAngelo good to know. I wouldn't never guess the vocals in like a prayer is just a signle time take. and it sounds very good and pure. now I understand why.
I doubt the same thing was done to express yourself, as I have the demo, and it's clear she have sang it more than once.
Guy Madison the demo is out there
DJMichaelAngelo how can anyone not recognize that this woman is a genius?
Guy Madison It wasn’t a single take lol. They certain on the lyrics and key it was being composed in. So when they recorded the vocals they treated it as a final take.
I love the background vocals too. It’s so angelic.
People keep saying she cannot sing. I think the issue is that she cannot sing as others and others cannot sing as she does.
Just saying, been keeping a watchful eye on people who can sing her songs. Some legimate attempts, no person who can sing her songs better.
I wonder how she achieved this sound. Her vocal performance in Like A Prayer is so different from everything she's done before or since. A raw state of emotion.
I love that Pat Leonard has done this as a show of solidarity, and that he still has his old friend's back after all these years ❤
Madonna/Leonard the Dream Team
As a guitarist I played Van Halen and Prince in the eighties. My 2 great idols. But later I also played the interesting guitar parts of the songs of Madonna. Awesome music.
Fantasic composer. Every song he did with Madonna was gold. Wish he was still writing for her!
Those HARMONIES!!! I am DEAD. This is ART. You're a genius Pat. It's like listening from day one all over again. Absolute MAGIC.
You are so right man! This is pure ART!
Except SHE usually "figures out" the harmonies on the go. It's a common thread in ALL her music regardless of the co-producers.
She gets little to no credit for it, well just because that's the way it is.
In reality she plays the piano (formal training), the drums and acoustic guitars from her gig-days and is an insanely talented composer. Again, no credit for that whatsoever.
You can hear her going at it in real-time on the Erotica demo session leaks, how she layers the harmonies in Rain, also the leaked Vogue rehearsals, when she's trying to figure out the bridge 4 part harmony - it's insane.
Great demo love Madonna doing her own background vocals
OMG this is my favorite song by Madonna and my favorite song of ALL TIME. There is something mystical and magical about it. Like flying to heaven, to some place that you're not really sure it exist but you feel great just thinking about it. You feel peace, it's just Like A Prayer... 🙏🙏
Omg I'm in love with this demo... It's like hearing Like A Prayer for the first time all over again ..thank you for sharing
Holy fuck, I feel the same
Coasterboi
I feel the same 😘
The drum and bass programming is reminiscent of its immediate predecessor "Who's That Girl"
*Nick and Donna.. Those girls were the best backvocals that she always should be singing with.*
Totally agree. And they had REAL chemistry on stage - something very rare with singers and backing vocalists. I'll always wonder what caused them to drift apart.
I miss Niki and Donna
here there's ONLY Madonna's vocals, all voices you hear
@@JordiVicenteGarcia That's why I'm mentioning Niki and Donna smartass... 🤦♂️They are the ones who made this song ending up sounding good.
@@eddystronger Madonna sounds much better alone, dear asshole. And in the record she KEPT most of this harmonies by her...
This demo was written and recorded in one day.
Total goosebump moment listening to this version for the first time!!
This song is pure pop perfection!!
God bless you, Patrick... your songs with Madonna changed my life
Last week I was crying watching the Batuka video, now tears are rolling down my eyes listening to this masterpiece. Thanks Madonna for pop perfection and Thank U Pat Leonard for this amazing gift!!!
The song that saved me through dad's cancer. I'm so thankful for this fantastic song and amazing demo. Thanks Patrick. This is pure art. May God be always with us 🙏🙏🙏
I didn't expect all the harmonies - they sound good! It's so similar yet so different in places. Considering all her different versions of it over the years I'm surprised she's never done something similar since.
So glad this was released.. awesome...but love the final edit with prince playing guitar the choir and Niki and Donna backing vocals
Oh shit that's Prince playing the guitar parts on the final version?
OMG amazing! You should work together again, you are both genius
She did her best work with you.
My favourite song of all time, I’m losing my mind!!! Thank you so so much 😭
Olly Waldron mine too
I was 8 years old when Like A Prayer first came out. I'd never heard a more urgent and powerful pop song before or since. I remember reading the name Patrick Leonard in the writing credits on the album and thought to myself at the time, "I hope Madonna always work with him." Here I am now 37 years old, and my thoughts on the matter hasn't changed. ❤️
Best Madonna writer.. too bad she left you behind. Your songs have a greater meaning
Backing vocals around 2:30 are lovely and beautiful!
This truly PROVES the true beauty of this song light at first but then becomes dark towards the end. As if the video she did wasn't telling enough. );-j
OMG we owe you so much Pat! This song is a piece of pop history, thank you so so so much! Please, if possible, just let us hear "Spanish Eyes" or "Little Girl", the Promise to try demo, they're among my five favourite M ballads.
I actually kinda LOVE this version! It's never going to be as good as the final version we all know and love, but. it definitely has it's own charm.
From now on for me, this will be the only version that exists.
The Best SONG EVER in history
Madonna has to work with Pat Leonard
The Best songs are with the 2 of them together
IN HISTORY ❤️
You are totally right. Her best songs are those she has written with Patrick Leonard.
Really? In history?
I totally agree with you. "Like a prayer" is one of the greatest albums of all times.
Its got a hint of who's that girl era to it ❤
It's amazing! Please realese more demos, it's a big gift to the fans. ❤️
MADONNA PAT LEONARD =MAGIC WISH U TWO WOULD PRODUCE ANOTHER ALBUM TOGETHER
Music history right here! Voice of an angel! Legend
It still has that True Blue Era sound :)
Just to think that they can work together again makes me scream, its the perfect couple
No end and no beginning.
I've only just heard this and this is amazing. Reminds me of hearing this for the first time, over 30 years ago. Absolute Madonna classic and been a fan since 1984. Mr Patrick Leonard, you are wonderful for letting the fans hear these demo versions. An amazing thing to do. Thank you so much x
the drums, the vibe, the angelic choir echoing, this song is soooo good, omg.
All of her music up until I think around the re-invention tour had a certain beautiful sound to it
Madonna's background vocals were not an accident; there was a rigorous audition process in 1986 where Nikki Harris and Donna Delory lives intertwined ; together when their voice is meshed it is an identical sound of Madonna's
So the demo vocals ended up being the final vocal. Outstanding. What a document these are. I’d love to hear “Oh Father” especially after hearing Guy Pratt’s story.
what was his story?
@@tosomt5419 ruclips.net/video/yluPCLc1ltg/видео.html
@@tosomt5419 They played it once with her singing in the booth. She comes out, gives them notes (which she's thinking of while singing and hearing them play), they run through it again and that's the take. They overdubbed the Chester Kamen guitar on it but otherwise that's what you hear on the album.
One of the biggest hits ever written!
This song is special for me because it was the beginning of my journey with Madonna's music.
Favorite song, album, single, video, era. There is Madonna before and after this masterpiece. I wish she would go back into studio with you. As a longtime fan, I am sick and tired of her "I want to start a revolution" shit.
Thanks for this present.
By the way, "Like A Prayer" and "Spanish Eyes" are like walking into Heaven
The 1 dislike is Darlene Lutz.
🤣🤣🤣👏🏻👏🏻

Its Mimi Vamimi, aka, Mariah Carey
That's the final vocal!

I think that your song "Frozen" is one of the greatest in history. Could you post the multitrack, demo, how was the writing process going? Thanks (Google translate)
Thanks Patrick! this was my first album I ever bought. I always saw your name in the credits in the sleeve, now I'm commenting on this Demo on your channel :))))) Thanks for the music that changed so much
My first vinyl lp ever too... 30 years later i'm still listening here
Damn, you were the director of that crazy out-of-the-world show Ciao Italia in Turim, 1987. I found you ! What a big band ! Two guitars, three back vocals, Roland D50, Yamaha DX7... Solo guitarrist James Harrah killing on the swing of David Williams and the synths of those famous keyboards. Best version and performance of Holiday ever ! Unforgettable ! I made a video about it in my YT channel, please check it out. Please take all my respect and admiring. Tell me also: why did such a lady, a great singer, perfect dancer and wonderful stage performer quit a big pop band to do a mass uncultured playback electronic empty sex-appealed subpar work a few years later. She didn't need that. She needed you, James, David and that wonderful big band. No offense on her, sorry if you don't agree. Kind regards and congrats for what you represent. Greetings from Brazil.
I still never get through this entire song without getting emotional.
This is orgasmic OMG. Her voice is so powerful and the music is so smooth. You made magic together. Thank you so much Mr. Leonard. Nothing but respect 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Imagine these Ahhhs instead of the choir?! WOW.
Life is a mystery and this is a piece of art
Thank you Pat Leonard for making this accessible for us fans! love ya!!
Wow! My fav song of all time!!! The genesis of The Queen's Best song ever! The song which gives me hope in life. Thanks Pat!:)
That first double chorus...imagine if they left it? Wow.
History was made today.
Patrick Leonard please please PLEASE collaborate with Madonna again. It’s never too late. I love this song, but for me the Erotica album touched me like no other.
SOFTSHALLOW erotica was very dope I came out of my shell because of erotica
simonblack313 fun fact: did you know the director who directed Madonna’s ‘Bad Girl’ video also directed Michael Jackson’s ‘Who Is It’ video? Did you know how I found that out? I thought Madonna’s video has the same atmosphere and lighting as Michael Jackson’s ‘Who Is It’ video I wonder if it was same director? So I checked who directed Madonna’s video then checked who directed Michael Jackson’s video? And low and behold it was the same director! What were the chances of me thinking that!
@@softshallow7435 It also had the same feel as Oh Father, Vogue and Express Yourself.
Because they were all David Fincher. Very famous director!
Patrick Leonard had nothing to do with Erotica.
Did it hit you like a truck?
Makes me cry. Like when I first heard it in 1989- it was around Easter when I was in sixth grade.
Great song. And Madonnas vocals are almost perfect even though it‘s a demoversion and she had no time to practice (because the song was just composed). Talented girl!

Just Like a Prayer!!!
I love madonna's backvocals, pure and fantastic, by herself
Madonna and Pat Leonard created the Universe.
Please work again together ! Fans would be in heaven all over the world!
Thank you, Patrick, for doing the only thing you can at this point. Demos, like manuscripts, first drafts, unedited raw photos or any unfinished work shouldn't be out there in the first place unless the artists decide for themselves. These are gems nonetheless. This fan will appreciate them.
Iconic. I wish you guys would work together again.
What drives me crazy is the arrangements on the studio version. That demo was already very accomplished.
This is so incredible to hear 😭😭 the BEST song of all time
+Patrick Leonard official you did a really amazing job!!! I’m so fond of your harmonizations; just some right chords to make it work, a great melody and the main vocal line without any fanfare... Could have been a hit anyways! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 This demo is simply excellent
Except it's HER melody, HER harmonizations and HIS chords.
She never gets credit where it's due.
Oh my God!!!! It's a dream come true! This demo is so much better than the album version... The drum beats, the Donna Delory back up singing... So emotional, so pure! I just loved it! Thank you Pat Leonard... You're a genius!
That's not Donna. It's Madonna's own backing vocal.
Madonna
You're right, this is much better than the released version.
Hmm, don't know about that. This is great, but I'm missing Guy Pratt's fantastic bass playing.
