Every couple months I search for any new La Dispute reactions to watch. One of my favorite bands of all time. I really apprecite you two for reacting to the whole album, and for taking it seriously. Thank you. Their previous album I think would be another good choice.
Another band I love who have some similarity is mewithoutYou. If you ever decide to check them out, my favorite albums to start with are Catch for Us the Foxes and Brother, Sister. Basically all of their albums are good, though.

Thanks for doing that reaction so far, really good observations. :)
Ryan, your assumption that lyrics had been written before music is spot on. Jordan wrote all lyrics before they wrote the music together to make it fit and support the lyrics.
On previous (and I believe also later) albums the band wrote lyrics and music at the same time.
There are very few bands that have a similar style. Touché Amoré from Los Angeles come to mind (I think they are also friends and have toured together).
La Dispute was one of the first ones that - with this album - really nailed the "storytelling" aspects (that will be even stronger on the second half of the album).
The songs " A departure", "A letter" and "A poem" are the monologues by the hypothetical author and have more of a free writing style, much more introspective and vulnerable as you said. "A broken jar" will be another one coming up. Using writing to move through the pain and trying to find ways to cope, even if it might make things more frustrating, when the thoughts and feelings don't seem to make sense, writing as outlet/catharsis. And I think this is what makes this album so powerful and authentic, as Nathan said. Real life is messier and less structured than music usually tries to convey, and this album captures this perfectly for me. (There's also almost no effects on voice and instruments, just using distance to microphones and room sounds for different atmospheres).
While the album wouldn't "work" the same way without the lyrics and poetry, for me the songwriting and instrumentation, their switch-ups and how they also underline the emotions like anger, frustration, resignation are at least half of what makes this album so strong. I can easily listen and bop to the album and all the nicely and effectively placed musical accents without spending too much thought on the lyrics (given that I am also not a native speaker and might not get every word without reading) and still enjoy the hell out of what happens musically. :D
They are also a fantastic live band (unfortunately there are no pro-shot videos on youtube). This is a live studio re-creation of the first song: ruclips.net/video/AxCeaVWiAeE/видео.html
    Looking forward to part 2!

Man this is great, I always come back to see reactions to La Dispute and this is the best one out there. Good work! Also I hear a Canadian Accent, am I right?

I love watching people hear La Dispute for the first time. Excellent band, their music is beautiful. Glad you didn't write them off because of the uncommon desperation in Jordan's voice. I would highly recommend their album just before this one. In my opinion it has more breakdowns like how you guys were longing for.

I once heard their vocals described as sounding like someone ordering at the drive thru, but from the passenger seat. It's accurate, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Hardcore is a juiced up version of punk. Black Flag is the big one. Post punk and post hardcore are those respective genres but with more melodics and traditional music traditions like love songs. La Dispute are not typical Post-Hardcore, and truly are a wakeup call to the genre.
A more classically Post-Hardcore band, and my previous favourite before La Dispute, is Ontario's own Alexisonfire. While La Dispute stays, imo, remarkably consistent over their discography, AoF evolved pretty substantially, and I personally rank the albums reverse chronologically. Anyone that likes La Dispute should check out Alexisonfire's Debut self-titled ablum.

Ima check it out. LA dispute has hit the pinnacle of talent for me when it comes to bands. I can't imagine a better or equal band.

@@princedame9534 And if you're looking for more La Dispute, some little known deep cuts are "Why it Scares Me" and the Untitled LP.

@@Trowa71 oh trust me I'm hip to their whole discography. Why it scares me is probably top 5 LA dispute songs for me. Damaged goods, sad prayer for guilty bodies are also two great songs

For other bands with a similarly poetic lyrical style I can recommend Listener. It's not post-hardcore/punk but the lyrics are equally vulnerable and poetic

Just a bit more info on lyrical theming of the sections between the introspective/cathartic "monologues":
The first section (from "Harder Harmonies" to "Edit Your Hometown") is about people trying to find purpose, trying to create some order in their life (the melody that won't harmonize, the person pulling weed from the church steps, the guy 'swearing his allegiance' to his hometown while everyone else has left).
The second is about the more drastic coping mechanisms / responses to not being able to make order: isolation or immersion (being "safer in the forest" or seeking for human touch, the "fleeting ecstacy", finding a "body that makes sense"). Kind of a replacement for purpose and feelings as he says in "A Poem".
Jordan summarizes these sections in the first song as "first the feeling of abandonment, then trying to cope".
I will leave the interpretation of the third and fourth section to you for part 2 and don't want to spoil anything. :)
