American Reacts to CANADIAN FOOTBALL...shocked by differences (NFL vs. CFL)

- I took my American friend to the Grey Cup to get his reaction to Canadian football so we could compare the NFL vs. CFL. My goal was to convert him into a Canadian Football League fan by the end of the game. Along the way we asked people if they preferred the NFL or CFL. It was his first time at a CFL game, let alone the Super Bowl for Canadians, will he be converted into a CFL fan?

We had a blast at the Grey Cup and Jason's reactions were priceless, What differences did we miss? And what is your fav: NFL or CFL??
Tres jealous of having a great friend who can have such joy together. God bless you both.
There is a big link between the Bills and the Alouette. Do you know what it is or who it is?
@@stephanest-germain2996 tell us!!!
@@JosephD The coach Marv Levy won the Grey Cup with the Alouette and went to the Super bowl (4 times?) with the Bills.
@@stephanest-germain2996 gahh I knew that!!! I even interviewed Marv Levy a few years ago and asked him about it while we were talking before the interview started.
You failed to mention the best part about the CFL vs NFL... we can drink out of our trophy!
Ohh ya! Brilliant!!
But only Earl Grey tea.
@@mileitman no, beer and champagne.
@@nancymilawski1048 My joke was that the cup is named for an Earl Grey. (not the same one as the person the cup is named after, but one of his ancestors).
But you can't throw the trophy from one boat to another during the parade wearing shorts and t shirts in February
Aussie Here and by far I prefer Canadian Football to American Football but the CFL really needs to market the league more epically outside Canada, American Football Adapted a lot of its rules from Canadian Football when McGill University played Harvard in 1874 before that American Football was very similar to Soccer
G'day mate, I'm in Melbourne and have been a Roughrider fan since 1988, Canadian Football is so good. Have you been to a game yet?
Canadian here, and now I know you're a riders fan I feel the need to shout out my buddy Andy Fantuz!
Canadian here as well and long time BC Lion Fan !
You mangled the history. It's...complicated. Rugby football got exported from England before it was standardized, and it became more popular in Canada than in the USA, where various types of football continued to be played according to local rules, as had been the case in the British Isles. College students in the US had been playing football extramurally for a few years by these local rules, and when they tried to organize competition, the rules in the New York metro area had had the greatest sway. Harvard students preferred to play by the local rules in the Boston area, which allowed more ballhandling. They heard about rugby, but couldn't find any local teams that wanted to play that, which is why they held the series with McGill, which brought rugby.
As more American college teams wanted to play rugby, popularized by McGill, in 1876 they organized an association to make rugby their game. But they didn't actually take up anything from Canadian football. Since rugby had come to Canada pre-standardization, it was played by local rules there. The new Intercollegiate Football Association got a copy of the laws of the game from the Rugby Football Union, which by then had had a lot of success standardizing the game in Britain, and they adopted those rules practically en bloc, but then continued to work them out and develop them, because no correspondent at the RFU was interested in explaining them. Since then all the changes in Canadian football have flowed from the US. Not a single detail of Canadian football can be said to have been copied into American rules, except for one minor detail. After Canadian football abolished the fair catch in the 1940s, the NCAA in the US did likewise in 1950. However, the NCAA restored the fair catch in 1951, just without the option of a free kick. So the absence of a free kick from the mark in American intercollegiate football is the only bit I know of that was adopted from Canadian football -- and the other two major American football codes (Federation and NFL) didn't even go along. Rather, Canadian football has always been looking to American football for changes.
The somewhat soccer-like game you may be thinking of that was played in American intercollegiate football did not adopt such changes. Rather, the college students just dropped that game for rugby, and the New York version of football simply died out. People who wanted to play a more kicking-oriented game switched to soccer, and Irish-Americans took up Gaelic football, which is believed to have been cribbed from Australian rules. Soccer grew as it did in much of the rest of the world in the USA and Canada, making the USA a leading soccer power, but then it was more or less snuffed out in the 1930s and has been struggling to regain spectator popularity ever since, although it remained popular as a participant sport. The Irish were never much interested in spreading Gaelic football to non-ethnics, so it's remained a niche sport primarily in the New York City area.
We don't want to share. It's ours and nobody can have it. We tried sharing with the US but that idea tanked, although Baltimore became the only US based team to win the Grey Cup.
It's important to note that Canadian football has it's roots in rugby, hence the size of the field. NFL fields are sized to fit in established baseball fields. The Grey Cup was originally intended for amateur hockey, then became the trophy for amateur rugby before being the designated trophy for CFL football.
wow. are you Colonel By ? lol seriously good info.
@@mikeb.7845 I don't understand the reference. Could you explain?
@@daveduncan9005 oh, haha, no sweat. I was just joking that you had such knowledge of the old history of the CFL that perhaps you were a really old Canadian hero like Colonel By (1780 - 1836) who constructed the Rideau Canal and founded Ottawa (Bytown)
I'm very stoned and well, there is a joke in there trust me lol. But be sure it wasn't an insult at all, just another dumb joke by a slow hippie :) peace.
@@mikeb.7845 well...I am 65 so that's close enough for jazz. No worries and no offense taken. I did check into John By for curiosity but couldn't see anything to do with football. So I'm thinking... what the fuck is this guy talking about? I must be missing something. But the age thing works so I'm good. Happy days!
@@daveduncan9005 My mind is an unsolved jigsaw puzzle.
Btw, I still can't believe Hamilton gave up that single point near the end of the Grey Cup. Poor rabid, crazy Hamilton fans. I hate that "rouge" rule.
When asked if the NFL should expand into Canada, the late Howard Cosell said why would Canadians want that to happen?....you have a great game.
And a great history of Black inclusion....Warren Moon comes to mind!
I think they should add a Toronto Team, maybe they add a corresponding team west of the Mississippi, but the Canadian government probably wouldn't want the NFL expandjng there
The American game is about the money, the flash and the presentation. The Canadian game is about the sport!
Making the Edmonton Elks play three games in seven games was brutal. The game is good but the league us bush league.
@@roberteaston6413 Covid has messed things up for a couple of seasons here...This league has survived 110 yrs cuz we know how to do it right, and when it gets messed up, we fix it...I've been an EE fan since early 50s when they won a few Gray Cups...
I am a Canadian 70 yrs old, raised on the philosophy: "It doesn't matter whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game"....Meaning of course that you give it your ALL, and play fair, regardless of winning or losing...The American philosophy has always been: "You don't WIN silver, you LOSE gold"....They teach their children playing the game that "It doesn't matter HOW you play the game, as long as you WIN "...If you have to bend the rules a little, well it's worth it (steroids in MLB)...Banging on the garbage can to detect the right pitch...The Americanization of anything Canadian really gets my goat.
@@grantkruse1812 Canadian football has been around for a long time but the Canadian Football League did not really take shape until later. In the past the Grey Cup was competed for by universities. Like I wrote the game is good but the CFL can be bush league. In the 60's the Eskimos would play two games in three days on the road. At one time there no backup quarterbacks and no time outs. In the 60's the West would play 16 games but the East would play 14 games. With the exception of Russ Jackson Canada has never developed a good quarterback. Canada is changing. We are getting immigrants from China, India, the Philippines, and Africa. The downside is that Canada does not dominate hockey like she used to. The good thing is that Canada is producing good tennis players, good soccer players, good basketball players, and a few football players that can make the NFL. The CFL may not survive a changing Canada.
Nailed it. That's why I prefer the CFL.
As an Australian I like both. But I have to say I find the CFL more open and exciting
USA here to agree!
AFL fields are massive, so I can see why you’d prefer a CFL field.
As a diehard CFL fan, I absolutely loved this video! I laughed out loud so many times. I guarantee that had you polled more Winnipeg fans on whether they preferred the CFL or NFL, it would have been 100% CFL. This was such a fun video to watch, especially Jason's reaction to meeting Joe's "best friend" Jagmeet. Hahahaha! Thank you!

I was expecting you guys to be sitting down somewhere discussing the differences between the NFL & CFL. But I was not expecting you guys to be at the Grey Cup. Very much enjoyed this video.
Thanks Jacob! Surprised, eh?
Great video! I'm an American and really enjoy the CFL.
The CFL needs to be seriously modernized. More teams in smaller Canadian cities like Kelowna, Saskatoon, London, Ont. Barrie, Quebec City and Halifax. With a greater emphasis on recruiting Canadian High School athletes directly into the CFL. Beef-up the 'branding' and marketing to make it appeal to the 18 to 40 yr. old crowd. Present a greater buildup to the Grey Cup, and have the final championship game played in a Canadian city that does NOT have NHL, MLB or CFL teams of its own. That's the Canadian thing to do.
That's a great idea. The CFL should expand to smaller cities, but unfortunately most of them would be in Ontario.
I've never understood why Halifax, Moncton, Charlottetown or St. Johns don't have teams. I understand that whole marketing thing, but even the Toronto Argos have moved to smaller venues despite playing for awhile at The Skydome.
@@kyle381000Well said, thank you.
I agree with everything except bringing kids from high school, you have way too many guys who played 4 years at a d1 school or even spent time in the nfl, that’s sending children to play with grown men, it may work in basketball and baseball but those sports are nowhere near as physical
I can't imagine how you would sell anyone on a second team in SK.
This was absolutely incredible. I loved the atmosphere, fans, food, rules of the game and the best part Jason an Joseph. Great job gentlemen. I am officially sold on the CFL.

Now you need to go on a cross-country CFL road trip to see games in each stadium.
And bring Jason with you.
This was a lot of fun guys! I smiled pretty much through the whole thing :-) Loved Jason's reactions and Joseph's enthusiasm.
Another Canadian first, the Grey Cup can be played outdoors in the winter, in weather. You'll never see a Superbowl in Wisconsin, but you could see a Grey Cup game in Manitoba.
You forgot to mention that the Grey cup was given by Earl Grey who was the Governor General of Canada in 1909. Hence the Grey Cup.

that was pretty amazing that Jagmeet was just approachable like that at the game. THAT'S CANADA
The Super Bowl has become such an overrated, bloated, sanitized, corporatized, celebritified exclusive event.
The Grey Cup is more small scale, down to Earth, more accessible to the everyman. Yes it's still a massive event, but it still maintains a small-time charm.
Unlike with the Super Bowl, the fans themselves are the real stars of the show. It's about the different contingents that come from every corner of the country: From the West Coast, from the Prairies, from the Maritimes and even Baltimore, neither of which have teams of their own, but still show up anyways. You don't really get that with the Super Bowl.
there's always gonna be a place for minor leagues in this world.
It\s been so long since I watched a super bowl that I'd forgotten that the trophy is handed to the OWNER of the winning team. It's so much better to see the Grey Cup handed to the PLAYERS.
CFL is trash end of story
Almost Every Superbowl I've watched has been a predictable blowout. Almost every Grey Cup I have watched has come down to the last play.
If a Janet Jackson style "wardrobe malfunction" happened at a CFL game people would be saying, "Oh, check it out. She'd better cover up or she'll get frostbite, eh."
What an epic way to watch your first CFL game. You're a lucky man to have that kind of access! Fantastic video!
What a fun video!!
Thanks to you both
Go Blue!!!!!!
Great video! I was busy having heart palpitation in Winnipeg during the entire game. I love the CFL so much, and have great respect for Hamilton, as they are probably the best fanbase in the east that support their team the best.
I hope everyday that more Canadians would buy into the great game that the CFL has to offer. It's crazy how much the league could explode if people from Toronto actually embraced the Argos just like back in the john candy/Wayne Gretzky ownership days.
You'll have to swing by Winnipeg or Regina sometime to watch the Banjo Bowl or Labour Day Classic. Always a crazy fun environment with the best rivalry in the league.

Fantastic episode guys. Jason is almost an honourary Canadian now.
I think learning about and understanding the rouge in real-time saying "that was a bad move", is literally prove he is a CFL fan now.
Plus he had Timmies in his hand more often than not.
hahahah. Touche.
Show him the 1989 Grey Cup game between Hamilton and Saskatchewan. They used every inch of the field in one of the most exciting 4th quarters in CFL history. Too big...pfff.
THE FIELD SIZE IN THE CFL IS AWESOME...BUT THAT 3 DOWN RULE IS A STUPID WASTE OF IT...5 DOWNS WOULD BE BETTER!!!
@@mrtnt3462 3 downs forces teams to make big plays, more airgame than running game, that's why CFL has high scoring offensive games instead of watching a mosh pit inch it's way down the feild for 3 plays before going for a long pass in the NFL, which usually ends with a miss and then kick it away, games ending either low scoring snoozefests or one sided blowouts.
Bring him to Regina for the labour day Classic! And then follow up with the Banjo Bowl...it doesn't get crazier anywhere in Canada! All in good fun (mostly) and CFL at its finest. Hate to admit it, but Winnipeg has a ton of fun if you know where to look.

Jason kept commenting about how large the CFL field is, but does he know that both the CFL and NFL games were based on rugby which has the same field size that the CFL currently uses. For some reason the NFL decided to downsize their field.
Maybe it’s to make it more exciting?
When the NFL started they only play on College fields which were smaller.
Up until the late 80's, CFL endzones were 25 yards. I miss those days.
I still have my CFL board game with 25 yard zones, and the Ottawa Rough Riders and Montreal Concords exist in the game.
Just checked it up. It's because Harvard didn't have the room for a rugby sized pitch, so they shrunk the field and decided to play with less players.

Excellent video! Big time CFL fan since the Argonauts' Leo Cahill days back in the early 1970's (the NFL's legendary Joe Theismann got his start here, as did Warren Moon in Edmonton). I love the CFL because the rugby-based rules allow for more unpredictability and hence more fun! You forgot to mention the dribble. A loose ball can be advanced down the field by kicking it (as in rugby) and then recovered later to claim possession (even scoring a TD). The NFL rules forbid this.

Thanks so much Stuart!
Great Video!
Although this is the Grey Cup, you *need* to bring Jason to a Saskatchewan Roughriders Home Game (preferably between July & October)
The most dedicated fans in the league -- games at Mosaic are very similar atmosphere to US College games 💯
I was going to message that sentiment too! Once an outsider witnesses Rider Nation, they’re a fan and friend for life!!
Especially if they would go to the Labour Day game. That is always wild. The closest thing to a playoff game in the regular season.
I agree. The Roughriders have the best fans in all of football. They are nuts!
Labour day game in sask then come to winnipeg for the banjo bowl. Very unique experience!
@@loganc55 I second that. I'll never be able to go to either but I sure wish I could.
The Jagmeet Singh part was surprising, and fun!
So cool you met Jagmeet Singh!!! I mean, the whole video was fantastic, but that blew my mind 🤯 I won’t get political here for obvious reasons, but what an amazing guy! I’m lowkey jealous. Also, I’m a Canadian and Coffee Crisp is 👎🏼 I’d go for a Skor (like our future leader? 😉) or a Dairy Milk any day. I do like the hustle of the CFL with the less downs etc, but I have to admit, I’m an NFL fan thru and thru. And, I’m a Lions fan… so you know I’m legit! Amazing video, as always guys! You’re the bestests ❤️
This got you a subscribe guys! Great video. And too funny how the rouge came into play as you discussed it.
Thanks so much Les!! Ya what a coincidence to have the rouge play such a big part in that game !
That tailgate has to be super tame compared to what Jason has probably seen at Bills tailgates. I doubt that a single table was broken in half.
😂
One of the best differences not noted in the video is the grey cup is awarded to the players, the owner comes and claims the super bowl trophy. Players won it, don't need to see some old rich guy.
Awesome Video! Running into Jagmeet Singh was great!!! Thank you!
He was great !
Thanks for coming out, guys!
😍😍 thank you!!
A lot of people knock the CFL until they go to a CFL game!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
my brother did until he took my son to an Argos vs ticats game on labour day in Hamilton. then he was like wow this is actually awesome. The following season my family along with my brother went to another Argo ticat game in Toronto. he said they put on a better show in Hamilton outside the field and the fans are more passionate there, but he could clearly see the Argo fans were just as passionate come game time.
As a Hamiltonian this game broke my little Tiger Cat heart! Great video though guys!
Thanks Jennifer!
Best episode yet. So much fun. I felt like I was there. Go Bombers
Thanks so much!
I was at the Grey cup with my wife. You guys were literally right behind us and we didn't know. lol @16:19 I am the one in the #16 Dunigan jersey. I can't believe I missed the chance to see you guys.
Omg 😂 that’s too bad. Next time!
