This week Lou goes into all the mistakes that happened on our shipping container build. Whenever we finish a big project, we try to make sure to take the time to reflect on everything that went well and everything that could have gone better. Lou learned so many new skills during this container build, which means he also experienced many learning curves. From welding splatter to working with steel to insulation techniques, each shipping container provided him a new chance to progress.
It's hard to put into words how happy I am with how the whole project turned out and while Lou sees mistakes, I really just see a stunning space for our family to live.

My heart kind of aches for Freja sleeping alone at night. German Shepherds are so in love with their humans and I know she is longing for your company at night and wants to keep you safe. I hope you can figure a way to keep her in with you. Maybe a collar that smells like something else (eucalyptus?) to mask the deer smell? That's off top of my head, there's surely more in-depth research needed. Thank you!
Yes, I agree, what about a bark collar? We’ve had great success with them and dogs learn really fast. Good luck figuring this out!
You could put a thick insulating curtain over the door with a simple curtain rod that would help A LOT for blocking out the cold. Super easy fix for 1 winter

😊❤ Lou, on the metal br door, get some peel n stick gasket for doors and windows. Applied inside along the entire frame of the door casing will stop air flow. Made just for this purpose.
Not sure why the riser tube for your wood stove is on the outside, but small fires heats that rise and dissipates heat inside the space. With the elbow at the top to exit wall keeps most heat inside.

In Norway, where i come from we make what we call nail “tents” it’s kind of wooden small ish areas outside caravan so you have more space than you can comfortably sit in wintertime, due winter camping.( lots of people do this due to ski resort) personally I would consider this in between your living area and kitchen space. So when the cold winter storm hits you don’t need to get dressed to go to your kitchen.❤
This is significant and valuable information. In spite of everything not being perfect, you both are great examples of not quitting when things get tough.
Besides learning from the mistakes, which can be fixed, the most important thing is that the shipping containers are a safe place for your beautiful family. Lou is an amazing dad and husband! Nothing stops him from getting things done. Max is so adorable. Is unbelievable that he is walking already! He is growing so fast! Blessings to all of you!

Love that you share all the info from the experiences you've been through. You are both amazing! Still curious about the bathroom and shower situation now that you are going into the winter months.
Maybe take out the stove and make the bedroom a more functional place? Maybe even put a proper bed in. Wear thicker socks and put a mat down to compensate the floor when editing. I don't seen mistakes, they are learning tools. What you and Lou have achieved in a year, most people have never achieved in a lifetime. Happy Holidays in your new home x

I think you can find heating pads suitable for putting your feet on when you're in the office container-possible solution? As someone who is in the final stages of rebuilding a cottage in the wake of a house fire that destroyed our farmhouse, I've learned giving myself grace is essential. I hope I dont mess up anything huge and expensive, but I will do each step to the best of my ability. Know you've been hugely motivational to me and I suspect many others.

You may get an aquasystem with plants for the toilet, bathroom and
Kitchen greywaters when building the house if it is authorized in your area.
Yesss, Dana dear, it's a huge learning curve, not mis- takes, just a certain take on a project which each time you take a new- take on them.
It is necessary to clean a fridge every month, perfectly normal. ;-)

For the the steel door gaps: look into weather stripping- very inexpensive options available that will make a huge difference.
I love this channel so much and been a follower for years "since building Odie" and I love seeing Lou being so creative and learning new skills all the time, hearing Dana´s soothing voice and watching little cute Max growing. No hate but hearing Dana mention that they think about building a normal house eventually on the land, I don´t really understand why they didn´t just start on building a "real" home instead of the tent and the container build?
Has it not been wasting a lot of money building the tent and container build if they eventually are going to build and move into a new house anyway? Another wonder is the idea of the containers build being made the way it is with 3 seperate spaces so one have to go outside every time you want to go to either the kitchen, bedroom or office... Not too practical but it´s amazing to see what Lou has build "again" and i can´t wait to watch if/when he will start building the next home. Thank you for your amazing content!

Lou, I'm sure you tried this, but at first glance, it seems you could rotate the laptop, so its "width" runs from front to back in the cabinet. I am such a fan of all your work as a family! Sending ❤ from Texas!

No judgement, but I think you could do with another two containers so you have space for a living room and place for the dining table. In summer you can relax in the area between bedroom pod and kitchen. However, in the winter you are restricted to such small spaces and this will become very stressful for your family. Your husband also needs a shed to store all his tools. Have you built gardens yet? Will you be building a greenhouse , do you plan on preserving food? Maybe another container for food preservation and storage.
You have done a spectacular job I know you say mistakes but I see a strong family .

A process that might help with the window glass damage is using a soft cloth and brassy polish. My husband use to use it to resurface a scratched watch lens. It takes time and I would wait till the weather turns warm. Good luck.

A simple thick curtain goes a long way for the door insulation. And for the deap drawers, something like baskets with handles or boxes you can pull up to divide fr spaces could also help.
You're doing a great job, these are learning processes and I'm impressed and inspired by your beautiful energy. Keep going and doing what you love!

15:33 Simple fix - use a docking station! Combines all of your inputs/outputs into one cable. No need to revamp the whole cabinet for a couple of inches. Then, use a vertical laptop stand to get back even more cabinet space - you could probably combine all of the devices to one shelf, as long as you have good ventilation.
Thinking about your bedroom drawers... i would use a router or something to reduce the height of the drawer dividers by half. Then, build wood boxes that would slide easily on top of the dividers. Put the stuff you wear all the time in the boxes and everything else below.

We have learned so much just from watching this build! It's almost unfathomable how many skills Lou has acquired. What an amazing ability to be able to push through mistakes without getting too discouraged as well. The positivity and drive you both have is inspiring. Eeek bears, meeting either a bear or an ET would be my worst nightmare. You guys have done a great job with the cabins, they will keep the wildlife out, I watch another channel where they have a lot of bears in the surrounding area and they have a temporary electric fence, like what you use for stock. They live in a yurt and it has kept the critters at bay.

You could add a docking station in the laptop cabinet and only use usb-C connector from the laptop. Perhaps faster than rebuilding the cabinet.
Hi, a couple of thoughts on the deep drawer situation. Have you thought about making 2 layers within the drawer then building drawers in the bottom layer. A drawer(s) within a drawer. Either multiple drawers that open from the side of the large drawer or even a narrower drawer that opens from the front, or a combination of both. The weight should be considerably less so cheaper slides would likely work.
I live in FL...ceiling fans run 24 hours a day..in summer to lift cool air and in winter to bring the warm air down..those little buttons on the fan head change the diriction the fan turns ..my ceiling fans have been running none stop for over 30 years on low.

I bet a floor heating system would have been beneficial for your home
for the laptop issue, what about using one of those cheap laptop vertical stands?
also if your mac is plugged into the power source & to an external monitor it will still mirror the display onto the external monitor with the lid closed.

I love your videos, and your perspective on this project. I'm sure you are going to get lots of advice, but I have a suggestion for the bedroom door that has worked very well for me. I have a similar drafty door and I decided to try a curtain with a blackout fabric as the lining, the old fashioned kind not the lighter new stuff, and then heavy curtain material on the inside of the room. This has made a 10 degree difference in both hot and cold weather. Also easy to pull back when entering and exiting, and really inexpensive. Looking forward to more videos and thank you so much for your content!
Good idea. They could also use a quilt as a curtain. Would be even more insulating. I made some quilted curtains for my windows in a cold room and it really helps to keep the room warmer.

On Amazon, I've seen insulated "doors" that are like the magnetic screens for doors. I bet those would work perfectly.

Thanks for sharing your learning! You have done a wonderful job! What is you got one of those mini stoves that a lot of van builds have. And then put a sofa/bed in it's place and an armchair. For some reason, I want you guys to have someplace to sit:) Also, could the dog grate go in the office? It would be nice to have an indoor refrigerator.
If the wood stove doesn’t work remove it. We all make mistakes even when building new or renovating. The wood stove area could be a room for Max. With ingenuity it could be a bedroom and playroom on nasty days. The office container could also be a nice living room area. Dual purpose. . A kitchen table maybe a nice addition too. Realize you built this as temporary but I think you could make it more comfortable and usable. And of course. The burning question where are the bathroom facilities.?
11th mistake: Moving Freya to the other container during the night....💔
She is barking because she thinks it's her job (and this is stressfull for her).
Make sure she knows, that you are in control of the situation and she can relax.
For example: You sleep in between the door/window and Freya... never put her in the "strategic watchtower position". Like in frot of the door during night and in front of the container during daytime....
A pack always sleeps together !!
@@amreist6713you are so right! I just wrote my own message about poor Freja having to sleep away from her humans. My heart breaks for her 💔
They have a little child. Meaning the child needs sleep, along with tired parents. It’s just as if Freya is in another place of their house. Not all people have their dog sleep directly in their room. This could be true even if they didn’t have a small human:) and sure maybe they’ll eventually have Freya back in with them but sleep is important 🌝
What are the brand of storage containers you use for everything outdoors? You have stacks of them they look sturdy.
could you put a tube (can't think of proper name) from one cabin to the next so the wood stove heats both?

Was the mistake using shipping containers in the first place? The narrow restrictions are the major complaint of most folks who had the romantic idea of living in a tiny container/s.
There is a button on the remote of your mini splits that says follow me or something like that. It makes the remote the thermostat and it heats better…don’t do this with AC.
The lack of soft cozy living space is a big mistake in my opinion.
I'm sorry to say but it seems they need to re-home Freya. She looks depressed-it's like she's in prison.
