I definitely wear kilts made out of a lot of different materials. Living in ne Kansas it’s basically impossible to wear wool all the time.

PV kilts are great, allows me not to worry about damaging it when I am at a pub or Highland games. They are also great for kids since they tend not to care about the superior craft (and price) of wool kilts. I always tend to say that PV kilts are like a pair of jeans, and wool kilts are like a nice pair of dress trousers, some people like to wear dress trouser all the time and some people like to a have something on they don’t need to worry about. It’s really up to what you like.

Guys, your answers to the question were about as an articulate a response as could be given to the purist view. There is such a thing as too many rules, and the flexibility of being able to wear wool or PV is something that I appreciate.

I wear a PV for hiking/camping and gardening/yard work because I don’t want to ruin my expensive wool. If I’m going to the office I will wear wool but that’s just preference, not because the PV is inferior.

I recently visited the only remaining kilt shop in Michigan (I'm not going to name names, but I'm sure the savvy can sort it out). All that I saw on display was acrylic and wool blend (PV?). It seemed rather chintzy, not at all the quality of the Worsted new wool to which I'm accustomed. I had considered getting measured for a new kilt, but upon going there I reconsidered and will be more likely to order from USA Kilts. Boy do I miss my friend Gordon and the Highland Fling. 😬

I would only wear a PV kilt if I was day working on a farm or similar . Otherwise it’s wool all the way
But if you are On a small budget then PV is fine

On the matter of material, personally I love wool and don't have much inclination to ever get a kilt made out of anything else, but if I were a contestant in Highland games, there's no way in hell I'd be caber tossing and hammer throwing in such a high quality, warm and heavy garment. There are very functional reasons in such cases for considering other materials.
On the subject of the term "Kilt" as a protected designation, I don't think I could sum it up better than Rocky did in the vid. If there's any drive to apply a protective designation to good quality Scottish kilts, it can't merely be a catch-all on the term Kilt, it would have to be more specific than that. But at the end of the day, the people who buy cheaply made Asian kilts either simply don't have the money for a better one, or aren't the sort of people who will often be conduced to putting thought into their garment and seeking quality options, so I'm somewhat sceptical of how productive any designation would be.

Yeah, I'm pretty much always gonna be buying PV, not just because of finances but also the regular +100 degree weather and usually over 90% humidity of Florida Summers. There's reasons why the Scottish Colony in Panama failed, and one of them is that wool is not a desirable product in the tropics/subtropics. If you look down on someone wearing a PV kilt, I invite you to take a summer holiday to Miami or Orlando, and wear your kilt during the day. Just watch how quickly your future descendants all die of heatstroke and you single-handedly put an end to your family line.

Let's be straightforward here... wool kilts are effin' $$$EXPENSIVE$$$!!!!! One, maybe two, is about all I am likely to be able to afford to put in my closet anytime soon. I will be adding several alternative fabric kilts to my collection in the coming year or so, as I am planning on greatly increasing the frequency with which I WEAR my kilts. The next 8-yard wool kilt I will buy will be my family tartan, and that is gonna take a WHILE to save up for. In the meantime, I want to spare my existing good wool kilt from daily wear (or anything close to it), and keep it for more "special" occasions. I'm glad there are good alternatives like PV out there to make kilts more affordable. And if anyone is feeling my kilt to find out what it's made of... all I can say is it had better be someone I know VERY well and like a whole LOT!

Dale Kidd, regarding your comment about the family tartan, are you talking about Wilson No.43 (Kidd/MacPhearson?)?

Good videos, I like the idea, do it the best you can within your budget... you can always upgrade little by little later. The discussion on what a kilt should be, in order to be called a kilt: I would find it ok to have a quality seal (not only for Scottish made kilts) or similar.. but yes, this is a very controversial topic.

Thanks for this. Too many folks have rigid expectations. Is it a Scottish kilt? No it was made by this great company in USA Kilts in Spring City, PA.
