- Jeep brought the Cherokee nameplate back in 2014 along with a controversial face. The 2019 Cherokee now wears a family grille that's closer to the ones on Grand Cherokee and Compass. Tom Voelk travels to Southern California to drive the 2019 Trailhawk and Limited models with Jeep’s powerful new engine, a 2-liter twin-scroll turbocharged four-cylinder.

About Tom:
Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award. He also married way out of his league. Now, stop reading this promotional copy bragging about Tom's photography and editing skills and watch a couple episodes. It's much more interesting.
I love how you do better reviews than Car & Driver, MotorTrend, etc. They're perfect length videos, not too long, not too short. Perfect as always!
As a '17 Trailhawk owner, i took her out on the trails stock with a bunch of wranglers...she impressed the crap out of me and most of the wranglers. I'll eventually lift and and do bigger tires, but i'll be taking her on the trails stock for a while. Not a fan of the new front end of the '19 though.
Road noise with the A/T tires is actually barely noticeable imho, much quieter than my brothers xterra. Pavement handling is great, and on road trips i get ~25mpg.
My only regret...didn't get the sunroof...
You think they have long travel suspension available for trailhawk. Cause I think . This thing can go anywhere with longer suspension Travel for articulation, and beefier tires . Maybe just 1.5 lift nothin crazy
Front ends look stupid on the under 19' models.
I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee XJ. I don’t think a car will ever be as good as the XJ, but when I’m older I can’t wait to buy one of these
Wow. I can't believe what you were able to put that Trailhawk through. That is impressive.
I want that Cherokee trailhawk elite 4x4
My apologies to Brian (not Brain) Nielander for the typo in the video. I'll argue he's smart enough so that the spelling gaffe isn't really a mistake. If I uploaded the corrected version, all of your witty comments would disappear.
Driven Car Reviews can you review a GMC Acadia all terrain ?
I can look into it and see if there's a press car available. No promises though...
It’s okay, Tom. Sometimes when you don’t have the spellcheck when both “Brian” and “Brain” are spelled correctly. To quote the sidekick of a ‘90s cartoon, “Narf!”
And now it’s not ugly!
I knew the headlights would be the first to change.
I have had 2 cherokees one was a 99 and my newest was a 04 love them they got me through everything and anything
I bought 2019 and at 5000 miles it sits at the dealer with manufacturer's best engineers trying to fix it. Day 15 at time of post. Beware of the bells and whistles and transmission
Did the issue ever get resolved?
I would say Tom is one of, if not the best automotive journalists out there, Always a pleasure to watch his reviews.Calm, informative, no screaming over-exuberance! (God knows why I watch his reviews as I am on a different continent, and most of the vehicles are notavailable here to buy, and I could not afford to buy any of them anyway (If i can't pay cash, I do without) :). Regardless, thanks for the great content.
You are obviously a wise man Rob. Glad I can help you waste time watching cars you have no chance of buying!
Due to a temporary (hopefully) medical condition, (10 months off work, and counting) :( I'm sadly stuck at home unless at the dr or hospital, so i have time to kill, thank you for helping me kill it :) Keep up the good work :)
Looks much better now.
Heming Feng looked much better before. Now it's not interesting and just looks like another SUV. It looked cool before. Now it does not.
Excellent and beautiful video guys and hello from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
I love my red 2019 Cherokee Trailhawk... it can go just about anywhere!!!
We owned 2 2016 AWD Sport models with the 2.4L engine. One of my favorite vehicles, and so much so we just purchased another, this time a used V6 Limited, to replace a different vehicle that was just totaled by someone running a red light. Thinking of trading my Ram 1500 in for another as these were the best vehicles for Western NY winters and(IMO) one of the best handling CUVs on the market. The 2.4L was also great on gas traveling at highway speeds. I easily averaged 28 MPG on my 30 mile commute and reached as high as 32 MPG on a drive through the hilly areas of the state on over-sized all terrain tires. Equipped with the cold weather package it was a hard to beat value.
We still love our 2016. We have 29k miles on it now.
I have a 2017 TH and it's been great! 3.2L V6 has great power and almost 28 mpg highway. I does well off road too. Not a Wrangler, but I'd get a Wrangle, if that's what I needed. I've owned CJ's before.
We had a 2017 Cherokee Traillhawk with the 3.2 V-6. We traded it for a new 2023 Grand Cherokee L Limited trim. However we couldn't stand the new Uconnect 5. In fact JD Power just lowered their ratings for the Dodge Ram due to that new Uconnect5. We traded the Grand L back in for a new 2023 Cherokee Trailhawk with the 2.0 turbo and good old Uconnect4. On the highway we are getting 28 mpg! I always hated the oil filter system on that V-6 with the cartridge. The turbo has a conventional spin on filter. Only negative on the 3.2 the oil filter/cooling housing is plastic and cracked at about 70,000 miles. We lost 5 quarts of oil going down the road before the engine light came on. Watch those plastic housings like a hawk!
Great review Tom. Thanks for all you do! I have owned two Jeep Cherokee's, both were 2014 models with the 2.3 L V-6 Pentastar engines. Both were very capable, and dependable. First one was purchased new, second one was purchased as a repo, that had ALL the extra equipment in it.
Excellent review
The Jeep Trailhawk looks good. Nice review.
Perfect review. Please review the rest of the competition. Thanks you.
if im paying for a trailhawk i might a well get a less model of the wrangler....
Great review Tom, thanx.
Man I'll like anything Jeep does.. maybe not at 1st but definitely after.
Tom V., you state your review of autos remains unbiased, however, after doing this for so many years, have you not developed a strong affinity for a particular pack brand of softness and absorbency? is charmin or georgia-pacific paying you under the table? where is your full disclosure about that? :)
Ah, those are serious accusations sir, one that could upend the bath tissue industry. Early on I chose Kirkland because I figured Costco wold always carry it (whereas other brands could be rotated). I needed a constant metric, plain and simple. I didn't consider that the bundle size would change though (they got slightly larger about 10 years ago). That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Great review!
I do love my 17 KL Trailhawk.
Car sized, and yet I can go most places full sized trucks can. MOPAR rock sliders are needed for extra fun work. Great to drive on highway.
Love this. I love how genuinely impressed you are. How well do they feed you??!!??!
It's a well done rig, more expensive than many in this segment but it's also built for more off road prowess. My drive partner from Seeking Alfa really enjoyed the new engine. We both agreed it transforms the Cherokee, especially from the standard 2.4-liter four. I like the growl from the V6 better though.
No shrimp or champagne. All meals were nice buffets and there was a coffee stop during the on-road drive route at The Coffee Bean (which frankly, made the worst mocha I've ever had). It's pretty much what a corporate retreat would offer at a nice hotel. I would be happy to stay at a Motel 6 and eat fast food if I had the same access to the cars and personnel. For me that's what I enjoy. I must have talked to Mike Downey the Vehicle Line Executive for three hours about what into the vehicle and why they did it. I'm a nerd that way.
I got a 2018 trailhawk love the hell out of it , great SUV Will go anywhere.
Great review. Love the Cherokee Trailhawk.
I like Jeeps and I respect their owners, unlike other people with off-road vehicles (cough cough G-Wagen owners) they actually use their vehicles for what they are intended for.
venom5809 the only cherokee worth driving

Great review, Tom! Do you know the measurement of the cargo area with the rear seats folded down, from the back of the front seats to the tailgate?
How would you rank this trailhawk against the bronco sport badlands for off-roading/rock crawling ?
You can no longer get the larger screen in the latitude or latitude plus trim as well as the adjustable rear seats and the front passenger seat doesn’t fold flat either... bummer those took those features away for the latitude trim. Always making you pay more...
How’s the reliability of the new Cherokee? Are they reliable? People say they aren’t. I really love the Cherokee, I am thinking of purchasing one myself! Thanks great video!!
Niko Argiris 3 words" piece of shit " don't get the Cherokee or any Jeep for that matter especially the Renegade. You want a good SUV on gas that you can get 4wd on get the new Ford Escape or a Nissan Rogue.
wow great review, thanks!!
Thank you. Good review.
Yay a new review!!!!!!!
21mpg city 29mpg highway. Wit 4wd, ad the 2.0t. 👋🏻👋🏻
LOL he wonders who actually takes their Cherokee Trailhawk offroading. I sure do, I made a channel about it! I lifted it and threw on 32's as well.
Cool. I've seen that done to a Datsun 240Z though too.
KL Overland yeah I've seen alot of your vids. Good stuff! Personally I don't like that they made it look like the Grand C. I get that alot of people don't like it but then again alot of people don't like the Wrangler. So why listen to people who most likely will not buy it anyway? It was Jeeps number one seller for over a year and you change the look? I bought a 2016 trailhawk and have no intention of "upgrading" if it just looks like every other model.
Thanks! I think I'm going to be getting the new 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel when it comes out here in the next three or four months. I never liked the design of my Trailhawk, I bought it because I fell in love with the interior and was only considering vehicles with a rear locking diff. FCA is doing an amazing job with their interiors, and now that they listened to the public and added that rear locking diff, I'm sold. I just wish FCA made an offroad worthy truck halfway in size between the Wrangler and the Ram 1500.
Huh? What does that have to do with anything? You said in the video you wonder who actually takes their Trailhawks offroad. He said he is one of the people who does. What does that have to do with a lifted Datsun? I mean people put monster lifts on Chevy Caprices, doesn't make them offroadable.
KL Overland locking diff got me too. I'm fine with the way it looks. Especially when you do it up like yours. Gonna do the lift and tires at some point. I agree the interior is great but it was the off road ability that sold me. Cool bro can't wait to see your vids in the future. Wait if you switch to the RAM, are you gonna change your title? Ram overland? Can't do that man. Lol
8:31 Is that a Type C connector there ??
Yep!
Wrangler also has Type C
And some new GM products are getting it as well.
Love my Shark 2017 Trailhawk 😎
damn i hope that you can turn off that damn parking sensors if you want
Button for parking sensors is to the left of the hazard lights button, you can see it at the 7:50 mark.
I take my limited off roading all the time I've roughed it up alot
The Trailhawk trim is very impressive! It'll give my 2nd gen Tacoma a good run.
Did you try driving at night? Im curious to see how the factory LEDs perform compared to the halogens in the 2014s. Also, i see that you mentioned towing capacity but didnt see a hitch, is that an extra package youd have to buy for extra for the trailhawk?
I drove at dusk but it wasn't enough to tell. I'll assume they are better. Brian said the LED lights have an advantage over the outgoing versions because they are mounted higher so they could be aimed more optimally. Optional on all models, the tow package is only available for the 2L turbo and V6 engines.
Excellent, thanks for the info!
Great early review!!
I was good with it till the transverse engine front wheel drive with a tag along rear axel .
still it looked like it could run a ok trail.
Curious how good off road the cherokee limited is?
(not for rock climbing but weekend camping in nature, still good or not?)
All depends on the terrain. But for most camping, Limited on forest service roads should be plenty good.
@@DrivenCarReviews Thanks for answering, appreciate it.
@Driven Car Reviews - Was the non TH version you showed at the end going over rocks ADI or ADII?
It was months ago and I don't remember. Sorry.
Thanks Anyway - I'm debating whether I need ADI or ADII when I go to purchase it. I don't go "off-roading" as an activity, but I do a lot of winter driving and I'm often on sketchy dirt hill roads covered in snow and ice.
For me I live in the city but I am in MN, I'd probably never go off roading with it but I want something capable in the snow. I am thinking I want a limited with the tech package and Nav. The Trailhawk looks cool but it's not worth the extra cost.
Where in MN?
Twin Cities
Much improved, not as much cargo capacity as I'd want but a nice option to a Rav 4 or CRV. Just to show the Buick wagon has 70 cubes vs high 50's in the Cherokee and similar vehicles. I don't think many people understand the cargo capacity is not that great in the smaller CUV's.
The real negative on both Buick & GMC SUV's, GM has them manufactured in China. A real sellout

Why less towing capacity with the 2t when it has more torque than the v6 ?????????
Sorry folks but I can't find a good amount of videos on KL's non
TrailHawk addition videos. I have a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Plus
AD2. Anyone have links to AD1 or AD2 going on trails? Link or hit me
up.
nice, but still expensive to get an off-road easy/moderate trail version and NOTHING to truly take the place of the XJ - perhaps that's the JLU's task?
What does the Overland have that the Trailhawk doesn't?
Heated rear seats, mainly. Also a leather wrapped dashboard. I think the Limited is a better value for a road-going model. The Trailhawk is best if you will be off-roading and want a quieter, smaller vehicle than a 4Runner or Wrangler.
Great review!! Which model would you pick?
I'm not an SUV guy. My money is going toward a Cayman. Someday.
I'd get the Limited. I'm letting my spouse choose between it and the 2019 RAV4 Adventure.
" I wouldn't do this in a CRV or Rav-4 "
Jeeps officials - " Hey don't do this in a non trailhawk jeep "
Oh the irony.
Toyota4Life hahaha. I thought that was funny as well. The only thing is that there isn't any CRV or RAV4 package you could get to do that kind of off-roading. I would love to see a Forester tackle this course though.
Some backstory here- Talking to the Jeep Jamboree crew that built the course, FCA asked them to increase the difficulty from the original version they created to show off the extra ground clearance, 4WD system and increased approach and departure angles of the Trailhawk. Video doesn't show how steep the grades are or the size of the rocks well. It was a very challenging drive that CR-V, RAV4 and others simply can't tackle. A Jeep engineer said a standard Cherokee with Active Drive II could probably have made it with upgraded tires but they didn't want to risk scuffed fascias or pranged undercarriages because of the lower ground clearance. Other crossovers in this segment have fine attributes, but Jeep owns it when it comes to off roading. As I always suggest, buy what you need.
alex martens I agree also lol. The rav 4 adventure grade would do okay off road
guy proulx I would say a Grand Cherokee and 4 Runner would be in the same class. The Cherokee is more in line size wize with a Rav 4
"completely off the throttle and brake with only hill descent on" when I can clearly see the brake lights lol
Hopefully the transmission is better
Tom, how many people realistically "stash" their skis inside a crossover these days? I think the 60/40 second row split works well for most buyers.
I do it all the time when I go skiing in my Volvo. No wind noise from a roof rack and my bindings stay clean and grit free. When I was bring my son and his friends it worked great. Also, boards and skis are harder to steal from inside the car. For a friend of mine, 40/20/40 was a deal breaker.
I use the example to point out what I think would make the car a better vehicle. Not everyone is going to need that feature but for some it would improve the usability.
Driven Car Reviews
Hopefully Tom will share a video of himself channeling his best Jean-Claude Killy imitation on the slopes.
Uh... no.
Nah I’m good I will keep my 2017 Cherokee trail hawk. This new one just made it soft.
Kevin H
I like the sharp nose of the 14-18 model
I have the 2016 and agree with you. Why make the whole line up look like the Grand Cherokee? Why not just buy the GC? I have no idea why they would this if it's been selling so well.
Exactly
It's funny that you call the 2019 model "soft", all the new Jeeps are "soft" other than Wrangler. No solid axles and terrible 4WD systems? I'll keep my 2003 WJ with the 4.0 I6, NP242 t-case, and Dana solid axles. Heated steering wheel or otherwise. They can keep all that crappy computer controlled 4WD to themselves too.
🤙🏻
This is how it should have looked when they first reintroduced the Cherokee!
Does the rear hatch have a height adjustment now so you can open the hatch in the garage?
Didn't know. Usually it's done by putting the tailgate in the position wanted then holding down the button for five seconds or so until it beeps. Go give it a try and let me know.
We have a 2017 Cherokee TH: there is no adjustment. With the remote hatch: you let it rip potato chip.
1) I'd like to see other SUVs attempt the exact same course. 2) what does Trail Rated mean? Compared to a different brand of vehicle? Who gives it that rating?
Google "Jeep Trail Rated" and see for yourself. I already test drove the pre-facelift Trailhawk and it's amazing.
I suggest you do what Mr. Tan says. It's Jeeps own rating that they take seriously. I've been to its proving grounds in Michigan where they have recreated part of the Rubicon trail to test suspension articulation, traction and maneuverability. It's impressive.
Honestly I like the 2014-18 look better it was more uniqe and the new one looks a lot more like the grand cherokee now,
Why the hell is the turbo four only a $500 premium in the Cherokee, and in the Wrangler it’s a $2000 premium?
In Cherokee it's a $500 premium over the V6 which costs $1,745 in most Cherokees (Overland 4x4 and Trailhawk come standard with the V6. For the rest the standard engine is the 2.4-liter non-turbo four). The Wrangler's standard engine is the V6 and its turbo four-cylinder gets a mild hybrid system that Cherokee doesn't get because of packaging constraints. .
I forgot about that mild hybrid system. Thank you. Very helpful answer.
It's who I am. It's what I do.
is their a video or something of you explaining this new mild hybrid system turbo engine? I'm stuck in a deadlock on what i should buy for my mom, i want to get the wrangler but its not pratical as it has horrible mpg, so i was looking more towards the compass... unless this new wrangler improves its mpg..
You realize the Wrangler has a terrible ride, right? You think your Mom will like that?
Yeah I'm good, my XJ still kicks ass.
Until you get into a 30 MPH crash and you dead.
Great review. As I would normally jump right into a Trailhawk, I will certainly take a serious look at the (city slicker) Limited- turbo 4 based on your review. The rear storage for camping gear..... or groceries... struck a cord.
Hi Mr. Voelk, I'm looking into a 2019 Cherokee Trailhawk V-6. Are there transmission problems / issues with this vehicle ? I need to find out from someone who knows. This is a huge purchase for me and I need to know. Please help if you would . Tom Cowan, Nova Scotia, Canada.
There's been chatter about hard shifts, lurching, and a wiring harness issue that can cause sudden shutdowns. It's REALLY hard to nail things like this down, to find out how common they are. But start your search from there.
Oh yeah, buy that engine the first year-better to wait until year 3 with anything new.
Guys just a simple question,
The trailhawk is really good for offroading but how is it on road? Is it comfortable or is the limited a better option for daily drivers???
The Trailhawk will not be as comfortable on a day to day basis due to tires and suspension settings. It's not a huge difference but it's noticeable.
@@DrivenCarReviews well thank you for the reply.😃
Is the exterior chief designer's name really Brain? Or is it Brian?
Brian, but he's a smart guy. So in this case the typo is accurate.
Good to know. Big fan of your reviews. I always look forward to them.
2019?
Did I sleep for a year? It’s February 2018! Is this vehicle being released in 11 months time??
LOL at that build quality when you shut the hood.
That generally happens when a large hood also includes the grille face. The same thing happens on my Volvo XC70.
should i buy subaru or this cherokee
Get the V6 whatever you do !!
Is it me or does the rear remind you of the new kia niro?
I got a better one for you: Try Mitsubishi Outlander circa 2006 or 2007! Tail lights and tailgate are almost identical.
I thought it interesting that this has a better rollover rating than the Grand Cherokee.
Bruno TaTa air suspension. The GC can alter it's height and make it's center of gravity lower. Ask off roaders though if air suspension is good off road and most will say that's it's just one more thing to worry about.
my dream car
Of course, this is a new model but quality and reliability of the brand down the road has often been disappointing.
Transmission issues over and over again. You have to get rid of it before the warranty expires!!
review a Chevy Tahoe? or Ram? Dodge Durango?
Did the Suburban (a longer Tahoe) and have done a few Rams and a Durango.
I envy the Americans!
In Russia:
Sport - from 34000$
Longitude - from 40000$
Limited - from 45600$
Trailhawk - from 46500$
Overland - from 50750$
My Grand Cherokee WJ can do everything the Trailhawk can do, plus more. Also, mine looks better.
If jeep would still build the classic cherokee and make it affordable , no frills, just solid , square and badass, they would sell millions. Nothing built today can equal the offlroad performance of the classic cherokee, these new cherokee's cost too much, aren't as capable and have too many electronics. Jeep has lost its way, it used to be the everymans 4x4, now its all marketing.
Nice review, Tom. I rented a V6 Trailhawk for a 5 hour round trip and thought the vehicle looked sharp, except for that weird front end. However, I thought the engine was a bit weak. I actually thought it was a turbo four at first and was impressed with the grunt but when I found out it was actually a V6, I got disappointed. The highway ride was not comfortable. The off road suspension was bouncy and steering and vehicle were wondering around at highway speeds. I hope the new model has improved on road feel. It does look nicer, although the rear end reminds me of a Mitsubishi Outlander circa 2006/7 model year.
I like the 2018 better
Omar The man
The old trailhawk looks better and had better looking wheels
Who would take it on that terrian i would. I do with my 2018 jeep Cherokee limited edition
nice, how much does it cost? please
I spent 10 minutes on the graphic toward the end. It's all there.
yes, thank you
Fantastic video. The new turbo might have the lowest CO2 emissions of any Jeep ever. Government numbers coming soon.
Curious how it would stack up against the Wrangler that adds e-assist.
JEEP! A rear tonneau cover standard across all trims. Please.
Hey the XJs, ZJs, and WJz had them back in the 2000s.
The new front end looks horribleee🤢 just like a clone of all the other suv crossovers. The previous model front end is much better, looks way cooler and sets it apart from all the other vehicles.
So how can you call this trail rated when you can not even get a real trail tire for it? Don't get much response from jeep. they just say we will void your warranty if you put a bigger tire on it. 1500 miles on my 2018 trailhawk and I am ready to get rid of it. This CAR is for trail rides.......Paved bicycle trails.
TrackHawk >> TrailHawk > dobrze brzmi > 6.2L-V8-SupeCharged > 700+ KM ..
Chrysler "Hellcat-ing" everything .. ?!? .. >)
yuk!
I rented a Limited with the normally aspirated 4. I’m not sure why it is okay to offer that power train. It’s shit. You are only as good as your worst model.
I actually talked about rentals with some of the FCA folks. The versions that make it to the rental fleets are egregiously bad. That's what wealthy people who can afford to travel (and buy cars) are exposed to. Practically drives them from the brand.
You are correct. We bought a 2017 Cherokee Trailhawk and even the salesman recommended the V-6. Go big or go back.
i grew fond of my 2016 cherokee trailhawk, now this thing looks too plain.
Starting to look Chinese, should of kept the actual 1999s look
