  • As you may know, I'm a big fan of Logic Pro on iPad. It's an app I wanted to exist for years, and I'm very happy it does now! But it's not perfect, so lots talk about the issues and what I'd like to see fixed.

Hey Dylan, superb. Answered a lot of my question marks. I agree, subscriptions are a slippery slope. If you take a look at what A Tasty Pixel has done with Loopy Pro, I think this is the most superior model, where dev and user benefit. For me, there is nothing Logic does that I can’t already do with other apps. And if it is true what you say about the inability to map MIDI controllers, that is the final nail on the coffin for me. Thanks a lot! I always appreciate your depth.

Great video. These are all of the things that prevent me from running Logic on an iPad. It's funny that you mentioned Waves... I will never forget that they moved to subscription only, lost a ton of users, and backtracked. I think they'd do it again in a heartbeat if they could get away with it, and I don't trust them. Also, on the Mac, their plugins seem to break with new Mac OS updates far more than other plugin makers. And then you have to pay. Just venting a bit. Love the channel! Very well thought out videos.

Agree with everything you're saying and I personally feel like Apple created an arbitrary firewall between MacOS and iPad OS. Bringing MacOS apps like Logic to iPad only makes this decision more obvious and honestly stupid. Just let me dual boot between iPadOS and MacOS on a M1/M2 based iPad Pro. I'd gladly pay $100 extra for a new, universal version of Logic that runs on both my Mac and iPad Pro. I cancelled my Logic for iPad subscription when the free trial ended - my fears came true when there was no continuous stream of substantial updates to app. That is the only thing that would make me consider a subscription model. Otherwise it just feels like a blatant cash grab, especially if app is only significantly updated 1-2x a year.

Kind of a catch 22 in regards to desktop plugin availability on iPadOS unfortunately.
Companies like Arturia and NI absolutely could make their libraries and plugins work on iPad, but iOS music making is still such a small niche right now that they understandably don’t want to spend time/money developing for the platform.
Smaller developers like Baby Audio and Audiothing seem pretty committed to bringing their desktop plugins to iOS, hopefully if that continues larger companies will follow suit.

    • @DylanParisMusic

I feel like when developing the app Apple didn’t talk to iPad music makers. They spoke to desktop logic users and ask them. What would they want in an iPad version because it seems like the focus is on the mobility and the touch of the iPad and not just treating it like a usual music making device. Most iPad music makers use external gear, so being able to use a control surface or midi mapping should have been a no-brainer, but a desktop user wouldn’t think that way a desktop user would be thinking. How can I carry the least amount of items while I’m making music on the go?

    • @DylanParisMusic

For a first iteration of Logic is not bad but I HATE the fact I can’t do simple editing in Sampler (adsr filters) but I am hopeful to see a full feature Logic iPad with new IPad Pro this year … This DAW is a game changer thanks to its touch interface

  • @RobnDob

I was so excited about Logic on iPad that I sold some items and bought a 12.9" 1TB M2 iPad Pro. The subscription does not bother me, but doing without NI Komplete, Aturia Collection, and all my favorite synths and effects really hurts. I tried using the iPad for developing ideas that could be moved to my MacBookPro, but honestly, it is easier to just start on the MacBookPro. I have hopes that Apple will work towards bridging the two versions so that transition becomes easier. That would give me reason to go back to using the iPad version.

I cancelled my logic subscription not too long after I got it but I was trying to use it more for live stuff with the audio unit plugins from other apps. It kept crashing so I left it alone. I guess it’s not for me right now. I do have logic on my MacBook also but I really didn’t want to use a non touch screen computer for live because I thought the gear I have didn’t have enough assignable controls for what I was trying to do at the time. I’m not a big subscription fan either but I think they did give a good price for the year subscription. I really want to go to mobile music which is why I got an iPad for playing out. I thought logic was going to be my end all. 😀 I will try again though before my year subscription ends. I’m still learning so I can’t put it all on Apple.

I think a subscription model for DAW apps is only acceptable if all DAWs use the same open file format. Otherwise you get locked out of your own creations once you stop paying the subscription.
The lack of support for controllers is really a big issue. Playing music and recording FX automation needs to go through a physical interface and the touch screen just isn’t suitable for that.

  • @velanche
    @velanche 6 месяцев назад

I’ve given Apple some slack in the beginning, thinking that its subscription model meant that for its 1.0 product, that we might see frequent updates to the product. I was wrong, I was disappointed, and, for awhile at least, I stopped with the monthly subscription. I hear what you say about the subscription model, and it’s fair. Heck, I’d even throw in, in addition to giving folks the option of either subscribing or buying outright, a “rent-to-own” model that has users go up to, say, the cost of Logic Pro for the desktop, and then continue to use the app without paying any more until a major upgrade release. Regarding MIDI mapping, that should have been an early feature update. Loads of iPad music apps have it, so that’s just a big ask for folks to have to put up without even basic MIDI mapping for a “pro” level app. Personally, the biggest pet peeve is the lack of third-party EXS import. I have those that I use on the desktop version of Logic, and to not that this on iPad was really disappointing. And here we are now, and still no support for that. Oh, and about the idea of third-party universal plugin support, Apple had already made that possible with Catalyst a few years ago. I think that most plugin vendors do not want to nuke their sales and want to keep both its desktop and iPad/iOS versions separate. Otherwise, we would have seen. More of them before Logic went iPad. There may be technical reasons too, but I think that this change, from the perspective of third-party vendors, is not worth it for them right now. Great video, and thanks!

    • @DylanParisMusic

Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! And yeah I think the value proposition probably isn't there for developers right now like you're saying. As much as I want the software I use to be on more platforms, if I already paid for it they don't have an incentive to support the ipad unless they make it a separate paid version or enough people stop buying the versions that don't support ipad which probably won't happen

I agree with all of these. Particularly the MIDI mapping and the inability to use plugins with logic on iPad: breaking the compatibility of plugins stops me from using it on the iPad for any serious project.
What I was most excited for in time past with the idea of logic on iPad was being able to save them to cloud and swap between the devices to be able to work on things while in the go with my iPad.
All of these points make them non compatible in my mind and I may as well use a completely seperate daw. It’s really only good for making roughs, then bringing them over to the computer to polish and add my sound libraries and plug-ins.
It would be awesome if apple fixed these five issues.

I think you are being a bit unfair to Logic in your first 2 points, what you call midi mapping and how to quickly access auv3 instruments.
Logic does support midi controller assignment on internal and auv3 instruments. Admittedly, not all internal instruments are supported in the same manner, however what has been provided is quite capable. That’s all in the manual. On top of that, the modifier midifx provides another comprehensive level of controller customisation.
For some well written auv3s, it is simple to assign controllers. Korg Gadget, Module Pro and Moog plugins all work very well (albeit slightly differently). Other auv3s can be hit and miss, depending on how they have been implemented.
Also, to greatly simplify and speed up instrument selection, set patch to none on initial selection screen, which will be saved as default. Then, when you click the plus sign for an instrument in the track area at bottom of screen you go straight to a search dialog, which is fast and easy.

I think Apple don't want to compete between Mac & iPad Logic Pros. On iPad it's like sketchpad, simplified version. On Mac - full-featured version. On iPad there's so many cool DAW (-like) apps: Cubasis, FL Studio, Drumbo, GarageBand, Loopy Pro etc.

Even GarageBand for iOS its more than a sketchpad.. sure GB iOS isn't as fully featured but it's still very capable for all sorts of music productions. i was *very* excited to pay $200 for the computer logic but this $5 a month jazz for the app is nonsense! the UI or UX whichever one it is, is *not* the best for ipad. i should be able to tap the track and a *horizontal list of options comes up* like in gb ios but the list of options should be *way more robust* because it’s logic.
sadly i can’t use logic on my computer even though i bought it because i have a 2015 macbook with no storage. also sorry if i offend you cuz i know you like this app.😂😂😂if it was $20 one time purchase, or even $50 one time purchase, i might complain less. also i have no choice but to use it now for this specific project because silly gb ios has basic things that are missing like fades.😂😂😂

super fair! and no worries definitely not offended on Apple's behalf hahaha, it sounds like it's not the app you wanted it to be right now! hopefully it gets more features down the line that you like, but voting with your wallet is definitely the move for now!

Apple has such a long road to go down….some of the internal logic plugs look dumb, making them hard to use….not to mention missing features like the entire sampler and the entire alchemy. The quit arrow makes me wanna throw my iPad. The horridly bad ability to load sounds into logic and not only that…to organize them…super wack!

And everybody robs the artist…most artists come up short at the end of the year to be honest

Won’t EVER SUBSCRIBE to ANY app or DAW . Until it’s for SALE I will use GarageBand because logic is just a beefed up GarageBand and that’s it .

That’s easy it’s just an over grown garage band and both are rubbish
