Clock Tower did make its way onto the Playstation, and it was indeed super creepy. There were also multiple endings and two different characters / story arcs, which added replay value to the game.

We need a massive remake of Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Imagine if it got a game like Toejam and Earl got relatively recently.

  • @posthumanistpotato

I beat Zombies Ate my Neighbors on the Sega Genesis back in the day, a classic game, I remember laughing at the Chucky Doll parody with the butcher knives, they were so vicious against the blow-up clowns. The factory level where they kept jumping out of toy boxes was crazy.
Still, the Clone level and the later Dr. Tongue levels with the werewolves turning the neighbors was pretty intense and I remember watching the transformation animation like "Woah" back in the day. XD
Just acquired Laplace No Ma based on your suggestion. It actually looked a lot like a game I'm currently working on, complete with tag-along reporter taking pictures of monsters you encounter and it taking place in the 1920s. Never heard of this game before, so it will be interesting to see another devs take on the concept.

Got a copy of clock tower for the snes 4-5 years ago! This is maybe my favorite hidden gem now! Played it mostly without a guide, until I got stuck for one part of the game. The layout is a little hard to understand and the controls take some time getting used to. Love the eerie/alone feeling and scissor man is great! Definitely jumped the first time he appeared and I wish you came across him a little more often! Great game and great video, we love playing horror games in October!

Those are not evil kids that you point out @ 0:35 when talking about "Zombies Ate My Neighbors", but rather they are evil axe-wielding dolls that are meant to parody Chucky, and they're even seen coming out of their packages in the level that they appear in.

  • @Tonyvld

Surprised that Bram Stoker's Dracula didn't make the list. But I was happy to see Demon's Crest make the cut. As a kid, I would talk about this game and people stared at me like I had a 2nd head and would tell me "No way Nintendo has a game like that man, sorry, I just don't believe you." then I'd invite them over and make sure Demon's Crest got played. Back in those days, Firebrand and the game Demon's Crest were unknown to most everyone. Along with Gargoyle's Quest 2, which specifically let you control Firebrand. It also explained why, in the game Demon's Crest, that Firebrand could fly infinitely without tiring.

SNES Doom gave me nightmares for nearly a decade.. Not even because of the daemons and guns, the bloody face at the bottom center being your health bar. In those nightmares the bloodied remains of the doomguy would hunt me down and kill me for allowing him to become so grievously injured...

  • @barry-allenthe-flash8396
    @barry-allenthe-flash8396 4 года назад

Terrific list, man! This is loaded with gems and oddities and stuff more people should at least know about. I only learned about some of these recently from SNES Drunk (Musya) and DariaPlaysRPGs (Laplace), but I'm always interested in seeing more mature/dark SNES games. Or 16-bit games in general. They're way too rare; devs didn't really seem interested in exploring horror or mature themes until the 32-bit era.
I loved SNES Doom, tho it was the first FPS I ever owned. Don't remember sticking to walls, or weird pixels shimmering (that should be emulation issues in the video), but yeah the frame rate was awful and if you didn't use the run button, it was pretty sluggish. I didn't know any better, and even though I find it hard to go back to ANY classic-style DOOM now, it definitely entertained (at least for a bit; I picked up Quake and Duke Nukem 64 a few weeks later since I picked up DOOM on a whim from a K-B Toys that was closing _well after_ the N64 and Playstation generation had begun).
Thrilled to see Demon's Crest here, and for someone to NOT call it a Metroidvania! Man oh man, am I sick of that - it's the same design that Donald Duck's Quackshot and Shantae & the Pirate's Curse had, that sort of pseudo-RPG structure with levels dotted throughout the World Map you can return to at any time (it is, after all, the sequel to Gargoyle's Quest 2 on the NES, a much more obvious RPG/Platformer hybrid). I think it's a Wonder Boy design, but since the only genre descriptor for non-linear sidescrollers that game journalists and influencers seem to know these days is 'Metroidvanias,' I have no idea if it has a proper name. Still, like a lot of other games with that design, it is *exceptional.* After you collect the initial crests/demon forms and revisit old stages, they don't just have hidden areas, but entirely new branches that lead to entirely new stages on the World Map. The stages are hiding stages! There's a real postgame with two extra demon forms to find and an ultimate boss! This game goes all out. It is Capcom at their peak and stands right next to, say, Mega Man X (I would not be surprised if they share a lot of code base and talent).
I get where you're coming from with Super Castlevania IV too. While I honestly don't have a preference for control schemes, I think it's strange they never did a single other entry with the Super IV control scheme. Super IV is so good, and it's just a launch game. Imagine what a sequel to this would've been like towards _the end_ of the SNES life, after Konami had really learnt how to make the hardware sing? It's kind of unfair that the more fluid control style here was never used again :/
Looking forward to next Halloween just to see if you can scrounge up some more - I assume that's why Ghoul Patrol or some of the Addams Family games weren't mentioned here. Also, in case you're keeping track of stuff to show off for a future list, might wanna dig into Majyuuou / King of Demons (the English Patch name)

Porky Pig's Haunted Holiday was surprisingly good; the Looney Tunes franchise didn't get a lot of stellar games. I wasn't expecting it to be as surreal as it was, either. Demon's Crest is one of my favorite games on the SNES! If you like that, it's actually the third in the Gargoyle's Quest series; the first is on Game Boy, and the second is on NES, though they aren't quite as good. As for classic Castlevania, my favorite is Rondo of Blood; the jumping and movement are just so smooth, and it works well with all the great action that it brings.

Of course anytime you get knocked down by an enemy you lose a crystal. One aspect to the game you might not know if you don't have the manual is it mentions that if you use the continue function too many times it will alter the ending of the game.

I had Warlock on Sega. It was awesome and difficult.

As satisfying as it is to wield an 8 direction whip, I find Rondo and Bloodlines way more fun.

    "Favorite casltevania control style"
I mean... Symphony of the night where the different weapons handle differently, but if I had to pick a retro one I honestly liked the Spear in Bloodlines

Laplace no Ma wasn't originally made for Turbo Duo (that was itself a port), but PC-88 and PC-98. It'd be nice if more people were aware that Japanese computers were a thing.

I still got doom for SNES. I kept it because it's one of the very few red cartridges for the snes. The only other red cartridge I know about is Maximum carnage. Even though it's a LGN game I recommend it.

The fire bomb, or holy water, is the op item in the game. Especially for the original.

Always would play Super Ghouls N Ghosts when it would snow just to play the snow levels I’m a glutton for punishment.
But I remember playing Clocktower on PS1?

Completely agree - triple boomerang is way better than omnidirectional whipping.
The controls in IV feel right for that style of game... Just like Symphony of the Night's control feels perfect for Metroidvania-type games.

    Summer 2019:
I was at my best friend's house and she hooked up her SNES while she did some cleaning up (her grandmother-in-law/roommate had died so I was there for emotional support). Knowing that I am a HUGE Doom fan, she put in that gorgeous red cart into the Super Nintendo. I wanted to strangle people with the controller.

Great list except I have to hunt down the translations of non-US releases now 😏 Especially Clocktower. I’ve seen it on so many reviews that I’m convinced it’s a must-play.
I want to love the creepy “cinematic” games, but the controls are just too mushy, which is saying a lot since I’ve slogged through my share of mediocre games. Perhaps I’ll give them one more chance...
I’m glad to see the love for Warlock! I rented it a few times from Movie Gallery (may it rest in peace) and finished it. Definitely not the best game, but it managed to set a spooky tone.
Doom 1/2 still hold up as some of my best memories in gaming because my brother and I played co-op games incessantly over a modem when he moved away for college. I’ve attempted the SNES & N64 releases but they’re nothing compared to PC.
Thanks for the countdown! I’m always looking for a good scary title to play when this season rolls around.

I will always be sad that I never finished Zombies ate my Neighbors. I think I was only a few levels away from completion but that last chainsaw level broke my patience.
Bram Stoker's Dracula I remember was decent, if wonky on the controls. Hard mode was actually challenging too, and worth beating.

Another good one for this list would be maniac mansion SNES. Microwave the hamster is great, but newer versions took that part out of the game.
