    I'm a big RTS nerd, so here's a few that are RTS-specific:
    Red Alert (And C&C1 but multiplayer only I guess?) accidentally introduced a kind of "moving attack" that was unintentional but ended up being a very popular way to play the game. It was performed by pressing G to put your units in Guard mode and then Q+click to queue up a waypoint for the unit. It only works with units that have a turret, but the unit will move while still technically being in guard mode and thus it will automatically acquire and attack anything it comes near it.
    StarCraft: Brood War has a weird "hold position" glitch. Some units normally are not allowed to receive a Hold Position order. Weirdly, you can select some units and a unit that can't Hold Position but you want to and you will get the button to order Hold Position and all of those selected units will Hold Position. That in of itself isn't super useful, but for some reason one particular unit, The Lurker, cannot attack if it is in Hold Position, and players ended up using this to kind of "bait" their enemy into a group of Lurkers, then telling the Lurkers to stop, which will clear the Hold Position, and they will all be able to attack again. This is usually used when a bunch of units are right ontop of the Lurkers.
    In Age of Empires 2, there is a formations mechanic. You can use it to toggle all of your currently selected units to immediately change to a different formation. This mechanic becomes extremely useful to dodge AOE damage. Especially when you have a bunch of "trash" units that are suppose to be hardcountered by units like Onagers, but by using certain formations you can extend their life a little bit to make them dodge the Onager's AOE. It was probably unintentional to use it in that way, but its not that hard to pull off and its very effective.

    • @yvrelna
      @yvrelna Год назад

      Ehh.. I think the AOE2 formation mechanic is definitely intentionally added.
      The use of flank formation to completely avoid onagers probably wasn't very obvious, as the staggered formation is what the game told you to use to reduce AOE/siege damages. But the use of formations to make certain kind of attacks more or less effective are definitely intentional. People just found creative ways to use the tools handed out to them more effectively for their intended purpose.

    • @ahha6304
      @ahha6304 Год назад

      The real bug that changed the game in Red Alert 2 is when you lift tank with Magnetron and placed them on the tree haha, the tank will always explode no matter what it is and the tree will always be fine lol

    • @Templarfreak
      @Templarfreak Год назад

      @@ahha6304 units being instantly destroyed when placed ontop of doodads, cliffs, or land units placed in water, is intentional, and Magnetrons are definitely intentionally meant to be able to drop units in these positions. :D

    • @Templarfreak
      @Templarfreak Год назад

      @@yvrelna the advantages in particular i am talking about come from switching the formations and not actually the formations themselves in order to do the dodging which is almost certainly not intended. when you switch formations, units will immediately begin moving to their new rank in the new formation, which is orders of magnitude easier and faster than manually ordering your units to dodge out of the way of something like an Onager.

    I'm surprised GunZ The Duel is not included on this list. The entire reason this game became well-received was the so-called K-style (Korean Style) which was basically animation cancelling almost every move in the game, resulting in a far faster and highly skill based game. It didn't got put into the continuation; GunZ 2 because the devs even said it was unintended to be there, resulting in GunZ 2 nearly instantly dieing.

    • @96Bysc
      @96Bysc 2 года назад

      I thought of this too, GunZ should be the first one, that game became a masterpiece by accident. The level of skill needed to play properly was incredible, plus once you mastered the moves it was pretty funny to destroy noobs that didn't even know what was happening and why you were flying around slashing at walls and changing weapons after every hit.

    If I correctly remember my early 2000's LAN party years playing Unreal Tournament 2k, teleporter kills (or tele-sniping, as we called it) was initially an accidental move (or at least not intended to be significant). However, those of us that mastered it were unstoppable during matches. We didn't waste running for the better weapons, we just bum rushed the other team and blew them up one by one by teleporting inside/through their bodies.
    Timing was key after tossing the teleporter disk at them. Too soon or too late warping to the disk and you'd just end up in front of them like an idiot while they executed you with the basic pistol before you could switch weapons. Timed perfectly, and you're rewarded with a glorious explosion of gore and a lot of cursing from behind the opposing CRT monitors.

Basically all the the "canceling" tricks was born from SF, so even though from game to game is quite different in term of execution, the 1st position is basically speaking for the whole category of fighting games that feature animation canceling.

    Things I used to use all the time were strafing in goldeneye 64 and perfect dark, in goldeneye single player I'd use the dual wield swap glitch to run around in single player with combinations such as KF7 Soviet and Klobb to enable aim magnification and improve lethality, I would also use the back and forward weapon selection in perfect dark multiplayer with dual wield charged maulers in order to reload the pistol in the off hand fully whilst maintaining a full charge. Sure, it only gives you an extra 4 rounds to put down range before reloading in combat, or a single half charged projectile, but it does give you an edge nonetheless 👍

    Back in the day I had a friend loan me his Game Boy Advance with his copy of Castlevania, until this day I don't know which version. But I remember that later in the game you get a skill to transform into a wolf(?) and that if you timed your moves just right, jumping and using the momentum of the jump, it was possible to keep going indefinitely. Just by changing into a wolf and back, the displacement of the character was minimum, but this was just enough to cross a giant gap and fight the final boss way before the developers wished. At the time I didn't knew it was a glitch and thought it was the right way to cross over.

      Special move canceling was an oversight from trying to make special move inputs easier to perform. If you wanted to shoot a heavy punch hadouken then you input down, down forward, forward and heavy punch. If you mistime the heavy punch input then you end up doing just the normal heavy punch instead of the hadouken. So they programmed it to be lenient with the input and made the move come out as long as you were "close enough". Combos came about from the "good enough" programming triggering AFTER the normal heavy punch input already came out. So you would do heavy punch then immediately shoot a hadouken before the full animation of heavy punch even finished. So you end up hitting the opponent twice in a short timespan without giving them a chance to block between the attacks, aka a combo. Combos have since evolved into chaining/linking/canceling from one move to the next to lock your opponent into a string of attacks that cannot be blocked after the first hit connects, all from the initial concept of hitting two times in a row from input leniency.

    Skiing from Starsiege: Tribes
    Tribes was originally meant to be fairly slow-paced, yes even though it had jetpacks, but someone discovered that if you held spacebar and bunnyhopped down a hill, the slope of the hill would convert your vertical momentum into horizontal momentum. Continue bunnyhopping to minimize friction with the ground, use your jetpack strategically to jet up hills and land on the downward slopes and the entire dynamic of the game drastically changed.
    The change, while unintended, was so prominent that the first sequel even acknowledged the technique in their tutorial, and subsequent sequels made it a proper mechanic by replacing the jump button with a "hoverboots" button.

    The whole "Gunz The Duel" game, it was designed to be a 3rd person shooter with swords melee combat and some matrix moves, like wall runs, wall jumps, dashes and you could block bullets with your sword. But players found out you could cancel any model animation when you blocked with your sword, so they started chaining dashes and wall jumps to stay "flying" trhough the maps, and they even developed more complex techniques as time progressed. So the game ended being a 3rd person, super sayian, shooter with swords. It was crazy, and a real good way to develop carpal tunnel syndrome in your wasd hand if you wanted to get to "pro" level.

    Shooting at your feet and being propelled up instead of dying is pretty silly, but the move is useful, FPS games could introduce a move where you use your left hand to push away enemies in melee range, but pushing when aiming at the ground it propels you up, and if done immediatley after jumping it boosts the jump. It could also be used to negate/decreas fall damage, and when using it on big enemies it pushes the player character away.

    Flying and Butterflying in Gunz the Duel were two unintended techniques that accidentally turned that game into an incredibly competitive third person arena shooter.

    I remember being able to play out into locked zones in Banjo Kazooie N'n'B. You load the cart with boxes, get on top of them, select the cart and tada! Flying car mode activated. I scouted THE WHOLE main map just from downloading the demo back before the release.

    Wavedashing was flat out removed from later games. Wavedashing is a glitch. Sakurai didn't expect people to figure out it existed, but it was a glitch. Also it's one of the things to note how Smash Melee was the ONLY one of the entire franchise that was rushed out the door! The reason why Smash Melee was rushed out the door was because back then, Mr. Iwata announced a Smash Bros game for the Gamecube, AND THEN AFTER he announced it, he asked Mr. Sakurai to make it. So yeah, Smash Melee was rushed, and because it was rushed, it was plagued with all manner of bugs and glitches. It remains a blemish on the otherwise spotless record of Smash Bros.

    A cool trick that me and my buddies discovered during halo on the original Xbox back in the day, was if you did a Melee Attack and hit left trigger to throw a plasma grenade at the moment your melee attack landed, you would basically hit the other player and stick a grenade to them at the same time and then all you had to do was evade! This worked exceptionally well on levels where you had portals where you could lure your enemy into a battle right in front of a portal, Biff him with the shotgun butt, “stick a sticky” and then exit through the portal behind you!!

    Rocket jumping in Halo was how I first found the skulls, before I knew they were a thing. What a time that was.

    You completely missed Gunz the dual.
    A game where a style of gaming stemmed from animation canceling and glitching movements, that made the game competitive.

    Kinda reminds me of Rappelz not really having much of a global cooldown for skills. It was entirely possible to fire off 4 or 5 attacks simultaneously because of this and inflict ungodly amounts of burst damage on classes that were never meant to have it. Soldiers and _especially_ Knights were already defensive powerhouses, this exploit turned them into nigh-unstoppable juggernauts which required extensively specific set-ups just to mildly inconvenience them.
