On the first floor, Charlie and Tom Silva install a recessed beam in order to remove some of the wall that abuts the front staircase.

@22:33 let's clean this mess up.
I didn't know contractors could say those words.
Thee right contractor will clean up after themselves.
@aloras405 noticed you said contractor, singular, not plural. 😆
Finally back to roots TOH. Excited to see more from this build. 👍
Good show ... from California 😊
My old house needs renovations...
Use the biggest nails they had, LOL
Question: How is it that the other 4ft slabs didn't just slide down like the one near the relief cut?
seeing that lack of a foundation footer makes me nervous for my own cheapo house, no doubt it's the same way 😆
I have never seen something like this before
Why not usea positive placement nailgun?
use 3D rendering for your plans
Show more electrical and the rough in
Ummmm they excavated the full length of the horizontal wall with a vertical cut to the bearing soil...😮
Can you do a video about how to get insurance to over all the costs?
Sometime sentiment overrides your thinking
Hello. I live in an old house. I am getting stinky smells in the living room and near the attic access. The living room is over the access to the crawl space. The fire department read hydrogen sulfide. Sometimes the toilet gets stopped, mainly in the mornings. Do you know what my problem could be?
To the experts out there, which is cheaper a renovation this size or a rebuild?
Jen is on 🔥💋🤗❤️😍
Seems to me that there's so little of this house that doesn't have to be replaced, that it would make more sense to save the few pieces that are salvageable, keep notes of which pieces those are, then tear the entire thing down, re-build the entire foundation with the new mods in place, then build the house back up from scratch, according to the modified floor plans, and put the salvaged pieces back in their proper places. Would make sooo much more sense!
I lot of times it just comes down to permits. Takes a lot more time and costs a lot of money to get permits, engineering, etc for a new build than to do a remodel.
You save money on a project wherever you can and the owners also have a nostalgic avenue they’re pursuing
In many states, the re-assemment of property taxes after a remodel is partially based on what percentage of the original floor plan is kept. A complete tear down and rebuild is not always the least expensive option long-term.
If they did that, then the show wouldn't be called "This Old House"
As old as the house is, they may be prevented by a historic designation.
No footing, time to pull the building permit and ID the building inspector and sue, assuming he's still alive
Youre assuming a permit was pulled for that, and if the wall was wide enough for say a single storey, it wouldnt necessarily need a footing with a wider base than the wall.
Roger? Still hanging in there?
I don't understand why people totally gut houses like this. Just tear it down and build exactly what you want. Or build exactly what you want on empty lot. Then everything is built to modern codes and you're not dealing with some screwed up foundation from decades ago.
I think is better take down this house and build new probably more heap and faster
They're keeping the fireplace in the kitchen? That makes no sense.
These guys are idiots, they trashed half the house. What a waste.
Only if you’re not writing the checks.
Complete waste of money and resources. But I guess they got to make a show…
@@Kevin-mp5of and you don’t have to write a check for the owners or fund the show or watch it at all.
Wish I was young and strong and full of energy, working in the construction industry.
recto-linear? 🤔
