      @@chrisdebj2264 they've always gone into each others games. That's why Tappers was such a popular place to hang out. But there was one very important rule: always be back in your own game by the time the arcade opens. That's the rule Ralph broke in the first movie and nearly got his game shut down for, and it's the rule that Vanellope broke and was rewarded for it.

      Turbo could have been a more interesting idea to explore like how he came back, how he gained the knowledge of the kunami code and the coding of the games. Maybe there was a bigger villain at play who gave him the napkin.... But nope we’ll sack that for rehashing old memes with Ralph’s face on it 😑

      Someone asked to the director why she did that and his response was "IF YOU HAVE A FRIEND THAT WANT TO GO SOMEWHERE ELSE, WOULDN'T YOU WANT TO SUPPORT HER?!"

      Welcome to the Metaverse I think the main reason that they don’t show us this awesome side story loaded with comedic potential is because Venelope wasn’t coming back to the arcade. They would be showing how hard taking care of the Sugar Rush kids can be without Queen Velenope there & having the overwhelmed couple wishing Velenope to come home, while telling us that leaving the arcade behind as the best thing for her to do - making Velenope out to be a deadbeat parent abandoning her kids so that she can go live her life.

      The whole thing should've been about Vanellope learning not to be selfish and realizing that joining "Slaughter Race" meant she would be going turbo and her game could be gone forever, and in the end, Shank could be like "You can still hang out in "Slaughter Race", but "Sugar Rush" is your home.". Vanellope would realize that her wants and desires come at the expense of her own game, and would decide to return to "Sugar Rush".

      @@supermariof0521 Which would've been consistent with the lesson of the first movie - that you shouldn't be an egoist and that your duty comes before your selfish whims. In this movie, Vanellope essentially goes Turbo, and the movie just yadda-yadda-s an explanation as to WHY she can do it - why she can exist in "Slaughter Race" - that Shank modifies her coding and whatnot. The hell? Then why didn't Turbo do it in Sugar Rush? During the entire first movie, Vanellope was down in the dumps, because Turbo (under his King Candy guise) had usurped her rightful place. She was treated like a glitch, an outcast, in her own game, while an impostor, a villain, a snake in the garden, was benefiting on her behalf. It made you feel sorry for the girl, and hate Turbo. If the game was so unimportant to her, then her motivation in the first movie is just...moot. She acts like it's so important to her to be accepted in her own game, and when she gets it, she decides that it's "boring", she takes it for granted and decides to fuck off to "Slaughter Race". Vanellope treats her game like an adolescent asshole who does everything to win his crush over, then cheats on her with another chick when they finally get together. When you put all this together, it makes her look like a selfish bitch, and that Turbo and his actions in the first movie...were, for the most part, justified - seeing as how they were basically identical to those of Vanellope, a protagonist! These are movies for kids, that are supposed to teach children a lesson. I really don't like the lesson that this movie teaches - especially if a child has seen the first movie.

As much crap as the "Frozen" films get, at least their made with love. "Ralph Breaks The Internet" basically a Disney straight to DVD sequel that was given a bigger budget and put in theaters.

      @balgreya 4 года назад

      Sorry I know I just replied to one of yours but I'm still curious because the consequences from going turbo are not placed upon the person but is the aftermath of what comes from being turbo. So Vanelope went turbo but she didn't do anything wrong. This is the third time I write this but in the first movie she was literally locked out from being apart of her own game. This established that Sugar Rush will still operate without her. It's not like Ralph where his whole game is broken if he leaves.

    • @sailorcat
      @sailorcat Год назад

      In the first movie, Ralph wants to be in a different game, because he couldn't accept himself. He wanted to be something he's not. He compared himself too much to others, instead of seeing his own strenghts.
      Vanellope does know who she is and fully accepts it. She wants to join a different game WITHOUT changing herself. A place where she can be herself even more. I think that's the lesson behind it. (But yeah, the execution could've been better.)

    As someone who was actually really looking forward to this movie, I honestly ended up really hating it. The main plot of Vanellope wanting to leave everything behind and going Turbo just did not resonate with me at all and honestly made me dislike her quite a lot. Her refusing her responsibilities as a ruler in favour of some cheap thrills just felt wrong on so many levels.
    Remember what a big deal it was when Ralph went outside of his own game when he wanted to feel appreciated yet he ended up feeling fulfilled by what he already had at the end of the film? Now we're supposed to relate to a person who has a more flimsy reason for permanently leaving her old life behind by just being bored. It's such a blatant double standard that it goes against everything the first movie stood for.
    All her problems could have been solved if Vanellope just went outside her game during the closing hours of the arcade so she could experience something new every once in a while. Nothing in her motivation truly justified abandoning Sugar Rush, the arcade, her subjects, her friends, or Ralph, her best friend. This is one of those times where Disney's signature "wanting more" storyline for a princess really backfired and really dragged the entire story down. Easily the worst Disney animated movie they have done in quite a while.

    • @LaPrincesseLointaine
      @LaPrincesseLointaine 4 года назад +28

      I'd also say that her 'leaving' Ralph isn't justified by the setting itself. What's the meaning of talking on phone in the internet when technically they can almost instantly teleport to each other through the same connection? It's just a bunch of cliches stomped onto each other without much thought. They wanted the emotional scene, they stuffed it in - while the first movie established its setting and played by its rules quite well.
      Personally I really looked forward for the movie too, and I didn't even dislike it too much instantly, I just felt just something is... wrong as I left the theater. And the more I've thought about it, the more broken the movie felt. Like yes, the best scenes were about disney princesses. And yes, Felix raising kids was so funny that they didn't even show it, thanks.
      And... funnily enough, they make the joke about stupid princess songs, and then Vanellope sings, and it feels like the movie finally gives up exactly on this moment. It's like "ha-ha, it's a stupid cliche, and now that we've laughed enough, let's do it and get stupid".
      P.S. It's better to not even start discussing how new movie rules and characters relate to old ones. Characters were were imperfect yet likeable, they're not now (and I don't like this sudden Mary Sue mentor woman - she's suddenly so-o-o ideal like nobody was in the first film - what's the point? - remember Calchoun as perfect counter-example). Rules... are all broken. Putting aside going turbo thing, how about: resetting the game didn't kill outsiders in the first movie, BUT it resetted the game code. So, by 1st movie rules, game reset should've been harmless for vanellope, but her inclusion in the code is pointless since each reset will exclude her again. But aside from 1st movie rules, new rules don't have much sense too. For example, this phone call (why not just travel to each other?). Why Mary Sue the kind and wise couldn't just give them the car since it costed NOTHING to her, it's pixels, and it'll be back with reset or something like that (especially since she's shown to directly mess with the game code)? And it doesn't work well in terms of common sense too. For example, I really now how mmo players of 'dark serious games' like sudden anime additions, fancy stupid cosmetics and all the things Vanellope. I also wonder, if their game works on the single server 24/7? Or if it's on different servers/instances like it most likely is, are there another instances of the same characters? Oh, it's so bad =.=

      This. Except, for some reason, I feel like Disney here gets a free pass about all the toxic advertisement in a kids film because "Duh, that's Disney, that has to be harmless and innocent".
      Freaking no, at least the Emoji Movie could pass as more of a teenage movie, here it's freaking Ralph with a Disney Princess who drives a kart in a country made of sugar. If anything it is more insidious and disturbing than the Emoji Movie, because it is advertisement aimed at very young kids about stuff they certainly don't need and could even put them in danger if used incorrectly. And yet, Ralph breaks the Internet didn't have a fraction of the same backlash the Emoji Movie did.
      I really think people are too forgiving of Disney today. Sure, the technology to make pretty movies is there, but there is something disturbing about the company that even transpires in their movies now.

      Exactly. Ralph went turbo and there were serious consequences. Meanwhile Vanellope goes turbo and suffers ZERO consequences cause feminism. Maybe if the reason Ralph didn't want Vanellope to leave was because he didn't want her to risk going turbo, it would make his character much more realistic. Like he's learned from past mistakes and is trying to prevent his best friend from making the same mistake. And maybe if Vanellope saw what was gonna become of her game, she would still really like Slaughter Race, but would understand that Sugar Rush is her home.

      @@supermariof0521 But the thing is nothing happened to her home, after they retrieved the wheel the game just continued as if she wasn't ever there. Also, Ralph was needed for his game, Vanelope wasn't. Going Turbo was only a problem because what it could cause. For Turbo he broke two games and (i think, i forget) became a virus. Ralph almost fucked up Sugar Rush. Vanelope was different. She was accepted and didn't force herself into the game. I get what going Turbo meant but it was still just a phrase that was not some divine law, meaning it's isn't necessarily applicable to every situation of game hoping.

      @@balgreya You are forgetting one very, VERY crucial detail. You see, these movies are made for kids. They teach a lesson. And this movie's lesson contradicts the lesson of the first movie.
      "I get what going Turbo meant but it was still just a phrase that was not some divine law"
      It actually is a "divine law". You see, the problem with going Turbo was not because of what it could cause. It was the PRINCIPLE of leaving your game, your duty, to follow your selfish whims. It's tightly woven into the moral of the story. It's symbolism - metaphors. Leaving your game is bad - as a principle. Whether your absence fucks up your game or the game you've gone to, or not, is irrelevant. That's just the consequences. To say that something is only bad if there's observable and inevitable negative consequences...is a very harmful lesson to teach young minds. It's like telling kids that theft and murder isn't bad as long as you don't get caught. Bad stuff is bad because of principle, not necessarily because of negative consequences. The second movie waves away the explanations and consequences of leaving the game and just says "Vanellope doesn't harm Slaughter Race, so it technically doesn't count as going Turbo". But in principle, in mentality, in reasoning, Vanellope is no different than Turbo. Their motivation is selfishness.

    What Could Have Been:
    1) Felix and Calhoun were never supposed to be Demoted to Extra; they had many planned scenes throughout the movie (some of which have storyboards and other details included in the art book) where the audience would see how they were faring with the Sugar Rush racers. Unfortunately, their entire storyline and character arc had to be cut due to the movie's runtime constraints, resulting in the couple only appearing at the very beginning and ending/epilogue. The credits hint at their intended major role, as they are listed at the beginning alongside their fellow main characters (as opposed to farther down with minor characters who only appeared in one or two scenes).
    2) Much earlier in development, Felix and Calhoun would have had a very different storyline, including a flashback to Calhoun's early childhood (featuring her mother, who got eaten by Cy-Bugs), Calhoun becoming pregnant, and her and Felix having twins, with Q*Bert as the nanny.

Although I do believe that Vanellope needed some self inflection also, because there's no denying that she went TURBO. I won't deny that there are some pretty big flaws in RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET The biggest being that the movie doesn't know what message it wants to send to it's audience and the blatant hypocristy in Vanellope's character. Both she and Ralph were equally selfish and stupid but the movie only wants to focus on Ralph's selfishness and stupidity. Also Felix and Sgt Calhoun are unceremoniously dumped on the sidelines when they were BIG PLAYERS in the original WRECK IT RALPH and we don't even see how they successfully raised twenty bratty half pint racers from SUGAR RUSH. Mabey I wouldn't mind if they got their short mini movie that detailed their adventures with raising their adopted children and how they transformed them into High Society little girls that are polite But on the whole I do legitamately enjoy RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET they got everything involving the internet right even if they had to white wash it for Disney Family film.

Sure she points out their Disney troupes for the laughs, but then immediately revels in them as a Disney Princess herself! She has everything she ever wanted in life but wants more (like Ariel), she’s bored of her same routine & small town (like Belle), she said that she didn’t want to be a princess anymore (like Jasmine) or have all the responsibilities for being a queen (like Elsa); her own selfish actions nearly doomed her kingdom but she gets no real blowback for doing so (like Merida, but Ariel & Elsa as well), she sings an “I want” song (like most of them except Eiwoyn, because who remember The Black Cauldron?), then gets everything she wants in the end without having to learn a lesson or sacrifice anything to get it (that’s most of the princess line; even when she was the main character in the movie, it usually falls on the guys around her to learn the morals of the story).

All of which was overcome by her determination and hard work. Now I know it doesn’t seem like there were consequences for her actions, but the film shows exactly what consequences were to come if she doesn’t change her ways and act as needed. I mean hell the reason the downfall of her kingdom didn’t happen was because she soon recognized the error of her ways and made an effort to change.

      Urm, if we're talking about the friendship in this movie being toxic I kinda thought we would be going down the opposite route to be honest. The message of the movie seems to be that it's okay to suddenly abandon your best friend and your responsibilities because of a whim, and if people around you don't like that they need to just deal with it. That doesn't seem like a very good lesson to me, I have to be honest. Especially when this lesson was contradicted directly by the lesson in the first movie. That being said, both Ralph and Vanellope are portrayed as toxic individuals, but the entire thing is lot more toxic than just "Ralph was insecure". The _entire situation_ was toxic, as is the lesson. The main problem being that it wasn't fleshed out enough. I can see a good idea for a moral in there if they had just done it a bit better, but portraying it how they did just gives out a really bad lesson to children.

    I feel like Venelope could’ve returned to Sugar Rush once a week or something to keep hype up on her game and keep a change of pace for herself. The fact that all the Sugar Rush characters are constantly swapping up the roster with that competition race thing shows that her returning every little bit would erase the players’ suspicions about her disappearing/going Turbo. Then it would be a big event every time she returned to roster.
    But I don’t remember if there was an in-movie explanation/reason she couldn’t return to visit if she wanted to.
    Still, they could’ve reworked the movie’s end so that she wasn’t “Going Turbo” without addressing it and frame it as her giving the other racer’s a chance to be selected whilst returning periodically to keep hype up.

      I think many people would share the same opinion if Ralph Breaks the Internet wasn’t a sequel because many of the complaints I see is people levying the existence and things set up in that film to this one because this film breaks a lot of the conventions set up there.
      This biggest one I think people bring up and rightfully so, is Venelope going Turbo, a huge deal in the first film and the sole driving force of that story is suddenly dropped and not brought up again. It doesn’t matter what message the film is trying to tell, but if it can only tell this story by deliberately contradicting the antagonistic element of a prior point in the story, it comes out as bad by many as it’s inconsistent with the world made.
      If the going turbo element was addressed or even made a part of the film instead, maybe people would have liked it more.

    For example: What if they both found out that there was a code that would allow all the game characters in the arcade to "live forever" in a way. Perhaps a code that could upload them all to the cloud when their game inevitably breaks/stops working/stops being played. HOWEVER the code is hidden somewhere in ONE of the games. This would force them to go to all these amazing games and would be more of an epic adventure film.
