Okay, I am going to add a long comment. I am feeling emotional watching this video, even though I watched you demo this house with bare hands (and some tools), but this video just made me happy to live at a time where women can achieve whatever they set their minds to, and that men can be in a supportive role. Also, I teach 2 year olds, and honestly, watching you trying to make things with the spirit of experimentation, where you don't know exactly what to do yet, but you know you can figure it out--that is everything I want children to learn in my classroom. It is why we spend the day playing. That is what I think of when I see you building kitchen cabinets, and again, it brings me joy. So thank you, and enjoy your trip!
I'm nearly 60 and worked in the building industry as an architectural technician. When I started out after college, there were so few women in the business and we were treated as a rarity with men kind of looking down on us a bit as if we couldn't possibly know anything about the construction industry by simply not being men. We had to work twice as hard to prove that we were equal to any man and in fact better than a hell of a lot of them. Once they saw we could do it, we earned their respect and it was never an issue after that. Some still looked on us as a threat, but most treated us as equals. Nowadays there are loads of women in the business and no one bats an eye. Thank goodness times have changed and women like MaCenna have shown that gender does not matter, it's passion and determination that work and women are just as good as if not better than men as we usually have a greater eye for detail.
What a gracious and humble comment/ compliment! Agree 💯 but I also think you deserve credit where credit is due working with and teaching children "2 year olds," what a formative time...those parents are very blessed to have such a caring, attentive teacher they've entrusted their children with! Blessings to you for loving and caring for these children!😊❤️
Romeo’s commentary is incredibly sweet. You can tell how much he loves you and appreciates/admires your talents. So much support! You are so inspiring MaCenna!!! Also.. huge props to you for still posting videos while traveling! ♥️♥️
I have a 10' ceiling with original floor to ceiling cabinets in my 104 yo home. I DIY'd a library ladder to reach the upper cabinets. ♥️ I'd include a pic, if I could figure out how. The ladder is a favorite feature by all who visit my home. 😊
My goodness! Even though I've been watching this remodel since the beginning -- I don't think I fully grasped the height of the ceilings until (about 3 minutes in) when you stood next to the windows/doorways. Something about the drywall makes them look SO much higher. Things are getting real exciting!!!
Me too, and the height of the cabinets as a result. Are you going to have rolling stairs like they have in libraries to get to the top shelves? I'm 5'2" and I maybe could reach the bottom shelves:)
If those windows get sun, it would be neat to have window boxes filled with herbs in there so you’d have fresh herbs for Romeo’s culinary experiences. 😊
I love how supportive Romeo is. You 2 are an excellent team. You complement one another so well. ❤️🥰 I hope that you 2 are having so much fun on your trip!
Your attention to detail and ability to just get things done and just everything about you is incredible. I need just a tiny bit of your energy! You amaze me.
Be aware that your fridge needs 1/2 inch or so room on each side for the doors to pivot open. With the door open straight where it looks like its an extension of the sides it actually sticks out a little farther. A 36 inch fridge won't fit into a 36 inch space unless the front extends past the depth of the wall or cabinets next to it.
One must be very good in geometry measurement to build like this! MaCenna is a critical thinker artist/designer and a visionary mathematician rolled into one. Such a gifted person! I am always in awe.
MaCenna---your double door frig....the left side handle will hit the wall, and you won't be able to open it all the way. You'll need a 4-6" spacer between frig and wall. We learned the hard way
I’m going to be doing a self build HOPEfully next year... that includes most of the construction and finishing work. I’ve been going back and forth between buying my cabinets or doing them myself. I really want to do them myself. Thanks for this video! It’s not a tutorial necessarily but it makes the idea of building my own as a “noob” a little more approachable than watching a tutorial of someone who’s done it a hundred times.
Having just finished renovating a kitchen in a 1925 house, the hardest part is attaching the cabinets to the walls. Older homes have wonky walls! Getting them plumb and level takes a lot of shims!
Vraiment bravo Macenna!!! Tu as des doigts d'or!!! Votre maison sera d'autant plus belle que c'est toi qui aura effectué la plupart des travaux !!!! Tu es une véritable inspiration !!!!. Kiss from France.
MaCenna you never cease to amaze!! You are such a gem and so fun to watch as you navigate through all the things. You make me want to do things I've never done before and the amount of support and admiration you receive from Romeo is just so adorable and wholesome!! You guys are actual goals for real! Sending you all the love! Hope you both are having a blast and getting some much needed rest on your trip! ❤❤❤
I love how you’re willing to just try this build and learn as you go. Now you are inspiring me to do the same with my cabinets! Imagine how much money it saves. Thanks Macenna!! Hope you’re loving Europe 😊
Idk why buuuut this seems like the MOST impressive thing you’ve done yet. No clue why I never even imagined someone DIY’ing their own cabinets lol! Kudos, they look stellar! ✨👏🏼❤️
Always so impressed at how great you are at learning skills and improving your skills each time. Not only are you an amazing designer, you are also becoming a great carpenter. Thanks for bringing us along on your journey
I loved how you drew it out for us over the video to explain @7:09 it helps to visualize it with you, it’s going to be beautiful!!!! hope you’re enjoying your trip ♥️
Totally and completely amazing, MaCenna, you took on floor to ceilin copboards. You are bringing diy to a whole new level. I love the beautiful old house and that you are restoring its former glory while adding necessary modern tweaks. If you have a burn out day, just remember we are sending you "atta girl" support so you can push forward and create you dream.
As someone with a refrigerator against a wall similar to yours, it can be such a pain not to open the doors all the way! (90 degrees doesn’t ever “feel” like it because if the shelving on the doors. Hopefully yours turn out perfectly! I can’t wait to see!
MaCenna you're not just a DIYer you are a woodworker and carpenter! You've worked so hard and developed so many skills, 'DIY' does you a disservice! Amazing job!
Macenna churning out kitchen cabinets like a baker that churns out cakes. Wow, I am going to have to practice some woodworking now, you have me all inspired.
Omg a friday video! Girl, you never made me so happy. I needed this today to get my mind off things. As always, you are the best at what you do, I'm sure your house will look amazing! Hope you guys are having fun in Europe, have a safe and fun trip 😊
Thank you so much for posting this! The other "beginner" and "Easy" videos I saw before this were overwhelming with tool use and language. I feel confident after seeing your video!
Love it! Before building the cabinet over the fridge, check the instructions of yours to see if it requires a minimum distance from the fridge to the walls/cabinets, because mine does and maybe you haven't checked yours yet!
So exciting to see the progress! Since you’re building the cabinets yourself, you can put in so many drawers!! Much more useful than too many base cabinets with doors-
She is talented and is perfect at it all. This is a massive job and taken it in her strive. Hope u are having fun in Europe and the weather in London has been great this week so hopefully you got to enjoy some of it
Hope you’re enjoying your vacation with Romeo! I am so excited to see how your kitchen turns out. I am looking to redo my kitchen in the near future and am on the same page as you with your style of design and look to you for so much inspiration. Thank you for letting me be a part of your journey!
You were putting together those boxes and girl I got emotional😭 We as viewers have seen you learn so many skills with such care and bravery. It is truly admirable. Love this🥰
Oh I'm so excited about the makeovers. Hope you're having an amazing time in Europe. Sometimes I feel so proud of your progress, it motivates me. So thank you ❤️
Loving the layout of your kitchen! Just be sure your fridge doors will fully open on the left next to the wall. Crazy how thick the doors are and how much clearance you need. I will be rethinking my fridge style next time.
I'm so excited that you're building your own cabinets! People do it so often for vans, but I've never watched someone build all of them for their house!!
Powering through those cabinets is so inspiring. Absolutely. (I would love to know time/cost for each.) My husband and I recently bought a house to make our “vacation” house. We gutted it and are just in the process of framing a few extra things and cutting walls out.
I think time will depend on the person's level of experience, and will improve as you go, just like MaCenna did. The sheets of wood she got were $64 each, and she bought 20. Add in the pockethole screws, hardware, etc., and I bet the savings are incredible compared to custom cabinets!
This is amazing! DIYing cabinetry sounds so intense but it looks like you’re doing an incredible job! It is very inspiring. I can’t wait to see the finished look.
I'm impressed. I've always thought cabinets are the last thing to DIY, you've proved them wrong. Smart to build them so sturdy, we thrift so we can spend the money where it counts.
I love old cabinetry that looks built in with inset doors. So in that case your face frames are last to go in. Basically you build the furniture with the different drawer openings, cabinets, etc… and then put the the face frame on. Your cabinets will be so sturdy with the 3/4 plywood. Many manufacturers use the particle board sides. ☹️
I’m in my early 30s and your videos have given me so much gumption to do so many home projects myself when I normally wouldn’t think I could. Thank you for being such an inspiration to us ladies 💛
I love your channel :) With your kitchen design, I am wondering if the left door (as you face it) of your french door refrigerator will have room to open all the way? It looks like it's up against the side wall. You're probably way ahead of that already.... Hope you are having a wonderful time in Europe!
It's so nice to see how careful you are to make them just right! Really looking forward to seeing this kitchen come to life! ♥️ Have fun in Europe (waving at you from across the Netherlands right now 😉)
Woman, you absolutely amaze me what you can do! Making your own kitchen cabinets is absolutely mind blowing! You are an awesome woman! Love your videos! Also love your mama!
The cabinets look fantastic! I'm not sure if you have a plan yet for installing/making the drawers, but drawers and drawer slides have always made me super nervous because it seems really difficult, but I recently saw some videos of people using a different jig from Kreg made specifically for installing drawer slides so everything lines up and is even - it looks super easy! Might be worth checking out if you don't already have a plan for that. Love your videos!
I have been flirting with the idea of building kitchen cabinets for my home. Thank you for being one of the wonderful ladies I have come across who gives me inspiration that I just might be able to do so.
Your cabinet building skills are phenomenal! These cabinets if you were to have them made would be quadruple the cost of doing them yourself and would not even touch the quality of your DIY.
Hi girl, It’s so, amazing to see you building your first cabinet. Go girl! The cabinets came out great. I love seeing you and your Mom working together. It’s awesome to see. The sweat and tears you guys put into this home. By the time your done is going to be one beautiful cottage. Stay safe. Have a good night. God Bless you guys!! Xo 😘 Making your dreams come true must be amazing to see!! Xo 😘💗🦋💓💕💖
OMG you blow me away with how clever you are. I would never attempt anything like you have. It's great to see Romeo supporting you. I can't wait to see the house finished 😀❤️
I'm so glad ur starting your cabinets!! I wanted to try making my own cabinets in the next few months and hope to learn from your work 🥰 hope y'all are having the best and most safe travels!!
McCenna, you are an amazing DIYer! Cabinet maker too!!! You and Romeo made a dynamic duo, plus your mama is a super supporter of your efforts. Hope that you are having an wonderful time in Europe!
Hi MaCenna! I noticed that some of your cuts were rough or have tear up on the edges. I suggest getting a blade with a higher tooth. it will give your cuts a more finished look since it's gonna be a cabinet. :).
I love your videos! I''m a recently widowed, 74-year-old woman with a yen to DIY some built-in bookshelves. After watching you DIY your beautiful kitchen cabinets, I may just have the courage to tackle those bookshelves. Thanks for the inspirations!
Had I known back when, what I know now…..I would have made all my lowers as drawers! Soooo much easier to see what you’ve got and nothing gets pushed to the back or lost in the corner. A RUclipsr “charlotte grove” I think. She just did this in her new build.

You're so incredible and inspiring Macenna! Then to see Romeo in awe of you is so beautiful. You guys are the best! ❤
I just came here to see if anyone else recognized his total love for her. 🥰
I thought the same thing! You guys are couples goals for real!!!!
Romeo’s commentary is incredibly sweet. You can tell how much he loves you and appreciates/admires your talents. So much support! You are so inspiring MaCenna!!! Also.. huge props to you for still posting videos while traveling! ♥️♥️
Looks like you are going to need a 'library ladder' for you kitchen to get to those top cabinets. 😉 Have a wonderful vacation!
MaCenna's next build is a library ladder!! Stay tuned!!
Agreed. Maybe a DIY on a thrifted vintage ladder?
Love that idea - it will suit the whole vibe. We have high cupboards in our old rental and rely on step stools!
Lol, she will store all her flea market /thrift store items up there.
I have a 10' ceiling with original floor to ceiling cabinets in my 104 yo home. I DIY'd a library ladder to reach the upper cabinets. ♥️ I'd include a pic, if I could figure out how. The ladder is a favorite feature by all who visit my home. 😊

Me too, and the height of the cabinets as a result. Are you going to have rolling stairs like they have in libraries to get to the top shelves? I'm 5'2" and I maybe could reach the bottom shelves:)
Yes I was wondering about having full height cabinets. How is MaCenna going to access them. She will need a stepladder.
Same!!
When I saw that shot I thought the exact same thing!
If those windows get sun, it would be neat to have window boxes filled with herbs in there so you’d have fresh herbs for Romeo’s culinary experiences. 😊
Bases of window sills can be topped with marble slab -- protective against moisture leaks from flower & plant pots.
I love how supportive Romeo is. You 2 are an excellent team. You complement one another so well. ❤️🥰 I hope that you 2 are having so much fun on your trip!

Very good point.
Good thought!
I plan to tell her about the fridge wold not able to open full... you bet me. I am glad you did..
not just that but it needs at least 5cm to ventilate on each side and 5 to 10cm in the back
i was about to comment that !!
Very generous to offer content whilst you're away. Girl, you impress me on SO many levels! 😊😘
I really enjoyed when you added the sketches as your were explaining where the kitchen cabinets were going to be! :)
Macenna, you are in your element when building things like the cabinets... you make it look so easy & interesting to watch!
11:53 My favorite part! These Kreg jigs with the clamp are the only way to go. Yep, that’s why this is my favorite part!

Girl... YOU NEED YOUR OWN TV SHOW!!! YOU ARE DOING AN AMAZING JOB!
The editing on this video is impeccable! I love seeing the live drawings as you walk through the space
Same! It was SO fun to see it actually played out as the showed it.
I think it is amazing that you are doing the cabinets yourself!!!!! The words ( I can do this )should be a t-shirt with your logo XO, MACENNA

How much will the materials cost you for building them?
@@yasmin7903 well plywood is 65 a sheet, plus the screws so around 80 bucks.
@@MixedKidd I think she did not buy just ONE sheet though...
@@yasmin7903 but you obviously would multiply one sheet times as many cabinets you need.

I've been watching Elisha English on her RUclips channel build her kitchen from scratch too. Love to see the girls doing all the things.
Absolutely. These two women ROCK! I've been doing my kitchen as well, solo during the pandemic, & believe me, it has not been easy.

I'm so glad ur starting your cabinets!! I wanted to try making my own cabinets in the next few months and hope to learn from your work 🥰 hope y'all are having the best and most safe travels!!
McKenna, I am so impressed with what you are learning and doing! When you are done, you will be able to build a house by yourself!
Can't wait to see the kitchen! Are you going to be able to open the left door of the fridge enough so you can remove the drawers to wash them?
I love the layout but was thinking the same thing.
McCenna, you are an amazing DIYer! Cabinet maker too!!! You and Romeo made a dynamic duo, plus your mama is a super supporter of your efforts. Hope that you are having an wonderful time in Europe!
I love renovation updates!
I gasped when I saw this! I can't believe you are finally starting to put things in the house!!!!!
Totally agree and much easier on your back and knees in the long run.
