The Engine/movement is what makes a watch fake if it's not an authentic manufacturers engine. Diamonds and other custom parts doesn't make it not authentic. Same with a luxury car like a Bentley with Forgiatto rims.... You can wrap, modify the body parts but doesn't make it less authentic. It's still the same engine and horsepower on the inside just a few exterior modification. Same way because someone has cosmetic surgery doesn't mean they are not the same person or less human . Same person on the inside......
I bought a Rolex Submariner with a broken dial and bracelet, bought a new original dial (black and gold) and a new bracelet for it. Ive been told its fake from nobrainers who dont even wear watches. Im sick of explaining to everyone how its not fake.
I have a diamond bezel in my Omega Seamaster and the AD thought it was fake because she hadn't ever seen that model. It was sold as a unisex watch at 38.5mm, and wasn't very common; was discontinued in 2018. I had to look up the reference number online to show her. Good news is her watchmaker took a look at it and said they used very good stones.
Bamford Watch Department is ruling the game with their Carbon dial customization ! Please do a video on Reputable watch customisers like Bamford, Eric !
Bamford is the shittiest customizer of watches out there. Zoom in on their pictures of customized rolex watches. The paint looks like a 5 year old did it.
That RWB Porsche is pure form of art. And the Japanese guy is Akira Nakai. This guy will fly in from Japan, take your 964 and turn it into the most amazing machine you will lay eyes on. All he brings with himself to build your car is a carry on full of Marlboros.
Sure, add diamonds and all kinda not stock stuff, sure, its not a replica, but the class you think you have, is. If you want a diamond watch, there are many manufacturers out there that make them with diamonds in-house. Go that route. Don't be that guy driving a H2 with 24 rims on it.
im confused i have a question. if rolex does not make "extra parts" or sell parts seperatly such as different dials, then If i were to replace a stick dial datejust with a wimbledon- who made the part? did it come from another watch or does a jeweler make it? to make it easier.. I have the datejust 41 jubilee 2 two tone with the black stick dial. (i wanted the same watch with the wimbledon face but at the time could not find it anywhere..) If i went to a jeweler that says they can swap the wimbledon face and he would have me hold onto my black stick dial (to always keep for value)...where would that dial come from? custom made bya jeweler? or taken from another wimbledon datejust 41? sorry for the spelling this keyboard is broken
Your that dude Eric, nice vid keep up the good work, side question you ever thought about making reviews on designer merch, or accessories I'm sure it will be entertaining
Also I find stones go better with white PMs. On white gold or platinum, diamonds can add a touch of elegance. On YG, anything more than a champagne dial with diamond dial is too much.
hi,Eric .My friend bought a luxury watch online ,apparently ,he got a fake one.Can you do some videos .How to identify the real and the fake one?(rolex,AP,breitling). thank you
My opinion is : If you change some original parts with some references of watches that are really rare to find ....Like Daytona Paul Newman etc. you are crazy. But if you change a new reference watch which is produced in massive of thousands pieces ...nothing wrong. If you want to be a real collector strat to collect things that are really rare and not things that are massive producing. Bye Bye
"Or let's say you just want to go straight savage with it"😂😂😂 had me dyin' loved the video😂 and I agree 100% with your points. I really wanna purchase a watch from you guys in the future!
Pretty much on what I consider before buying a used Rolex is whether its irreplaceable parts are being replaced by some after market alternatives. Sometimes, even to the point of forcefully fitting them on the watch. Like changing the Sky-Dweller dial that Eric mentioned. Huge no-no for me..
I recently blinged up my 16600. I bought it three years ago, bezel's one of those twenty dollar fakes from Amazon. That's ok when I get it serviced I'll get the right one put on, but 'till then, the lume pip fell off, so I superglued a a little plastic fake diamond in its place.
thanks for making video about this topic. I did a custom dial with MAD-Paris. much reasonable price if compared to Bamford. and the quality is superb. the original dial was given back so i can switch it at resell time! it would be great if you do a video about specialized custom watch makers like bamford, MAD paris, blaken etc.
If you want to put a fake dial on a Rolex, just buy a high quality fake watch, cost you a lot less and nobody will ever know until they open the movement
As long as the original accessory comes with the watch on top of the replacement, I'm OK with it. For example a change of dial plus the original dial, fine. However to me it's got to be all parts from the original manufacturer, no aftermarket stuff. I'm the same with cars, no aftermarket rims and body kits, only manufacturer's parts.
Hi Erik another great video. Could you make a video on after market diamond sets etc I'm toying with the idea of purchasing a Cartier Santos 100 or a date just 36 with after market diamond set. Not sure if it's the "right" thing to do! E.g. Diamond dots on the datejust, or fully iced out on the santons including the lugs. What are your thoughts???? Thanks! Keep up the great work!!
Thanks for the input. I am buying a SS Daytona all factory parts except a custom dial and the purists from all the Daytona blogs have been OCD about but, I love that Dial...and it's quality as you said. I can always put back an Original Factory Dial..but i was starting to doubt the purchase until i re-watched this video. Thanks
In fact if you put after market part on old classic cars.... its devaluat it! A lot... If you change part or do add on, keep original part to resell it!
Just my opinion... Anything added to a timepiece not provided by the manufacturer, the watch is no longer "original". It's second rate, hence far less desirable, at that point.
About negotiations based on devaluation and the ethics there of, it depends on local market. A dealer in a very conservative market (Germany, Portugal, etc.) will have a harder time selling aftermarket diamonds in their location compared to a market like Italy or Miami, etc.
5 years going strong 💪 I'm a little upset because my newly purchased pre-owned watch from a prominent 2nd hand retailer sold me a watch with a Sellita sw200 movement but with a rotor that says "31" jewels indicating that its from a Sellita sw260 most likely .. the price i paid for the watch (Raymond Weil) was decent & sentimental as my mom also owns an older RW. I'm contemplating on returning it but I'm also enjoying the watch .. everything else "seems" original. Thank you for the insight 5 years later 🙏
agreed. when i custom something change a part or add a part. i just keep the original part too. So if its ever a time to sell or trade i dont get no b.s lol.
Whenever it's custom, it's done to the owner's preference. Thus, it should be worth less to the general market. How is putting on diamonds not "Permanent" changes? It is now worth less than the watch + diamonds combined. Then that's devalued.
It doesn’t make it fake but in the case of Rolex it lowers the value and voids the warranty. Some morons put fake diamond bezels on real Rolex’s or cover them in cheap worthless stone. My advice “don’t put bumper stickers on a Bentley” if you want your watch to appreciate in value keep it original otherwise to each his own customize as you please.
I suppose by fake they mean the situation when they add gems to watches to make they look like an original model with gems, because the factory "gemmed" models cost x5 more
CRM Jewelers: What about PVD, or DLC treatments? I have had too many discussions about this, since I am an owner of a Rolex with PVD treatment. The debate always gets back to subjective valuation a customer holds for the piece - what they are willing to pay. Rolex holds a different view...
Aftermarket is a good idea if it impoves the watch, i put a 18k 3ct diamond bezel on my gold yachtmaster and it looks way better then the stock ugly bezel. It passes the water test too.
agreed - I replaced my dial on my datejust with a diamond marker dial from Rolex I don't think it diminishes the value at all It would have it it was not a rolex replacement
I have a question, and hope you’re still monitoring comments.....what if the movement is authentic Rolex Cellini with the factory dial but there is an aftermarket case?
Eric, morden Rolex have a single use seal no other watch makers have this seal. water resistance will never be factory spec and a custom diamond bezel on a date just or day date will just destroy the 100m depth rating since the bezel secures the crystal and ensure the factory spec 100 meters water resistance.
I have a Near Mint 30-40 year old datejust with a thunderbird dial tuxedo black linen dial. I've been thinking of adding a Rolex Grey Meteor dial. Any thoughts?
Is there any good source to get a genuine (ROLEX not aftermarket) 116610 submariner bezel and dial? I have a pre-owned custom submariner that has an aftermarket bezel and dial. It looks really nice but I want to make it back to original. Should I take it to Rolex to fix it or do you know where to look for? I’m in NY/NJ area. Thanks in advance!
Thanks Eric, good point. Q: Who make custom dial,s?. yes, jewellers!, but do they use an old dial as base material or a complete new dial is fabricated?. I was shown a custom Rolex were only the movement was original "they claimed", the rest of the watch included, case, dial, bracelet all was custom made. I later found out that this is a very common thing to do!, in some markets especially in US and in middle east. In Europe this phenomena is rarely to be seen, it exists but very sparsely. So, one(1) watch become two(2)!. The original stay as it is with a replacement movement, and the custom all new watch with an old original movement. I will consider the Custom watch a total flopp, its like driving a home made Porsche, build with parts from a VW. If you ever put a Rolex logo or insignia on parts not made in Rolex factory in Geneva, you are in deep waters. Hows your comment on this?. "The value of things is only adequate to how much somebody would like to pay for it". All the best.
Hey Eric, my 21st birthday is coming up here, and in Australia 21st is a big thing, I was wondering if you could give me some suggestions, I have a Chrono Seiko (my first watch) in stainless steel, I've had it for many years and will always keep it within my family, the next watch I feel for my 21st will have a leather strap, I want a luxurious feeling, but the feeling that I can wear it not only to formal events, but wear it to appreciate it ! Some advice would be amazing !! Kind regards
I have a 41mm datejust ever-rose with a custom diamond bezel, and diamond face. The bezel is 18k ,and the diamonds are Vs2. I also kept the original bezel because Rolex will void your warranty if they see none Rolex parts. Just don’t put cheap diamonds on a Rolex. Recently ran across a 2 tone datejust that was covered in I clarity diamonds and it looked like trash, so if you can’t afford si or vs diamonds keep saving because the I diamonds some jewlery sell are trash 🗑
Im thinking about buying a Rolex. Cant decide between a gmt master II 116710 and a yachtmaster platinum. What do think is the better watch (my first "luxury" watch) Thanks love your Videos!
add diamond insead of buying an original, if you really want to make noise and not willing to pay more, because there will never be a third party would can embed and cut diamond even nearly as exquisite as rolex, AP or patek, aside from the stone grading. (frankly, thats why the original one is so expensive).
These timepieces are art it’s improper to compare them to a car, you wouldn’t get your chisel and chip at a Rodin statue would you? Of course you think mods are fine you’re bias because you sell and promote aftermarket watches therefore one can’t really look to you for advice that’s like asking the pawnshop if they’re giving you the best deal.
of course a person can do what so ever they please with their purchase but that's not the title of your video, hell I could buy a watch and throw it in the lake if I wanted again that's not the point although if someone found that watch later still running in its original condition it would still be worth more than most of these modded and franken watches. what's trendy now will be passé sooner than one thinks, if you have money to burn and plan on keeping every watch them by all means as I previously stated do as you please but if you are collecting from an investment standpoint and enjoying your watch while it ages and appreciates in value then leave it stock. We'll go back to your car analogy, a 1970 numbers matching all original chevelle ss is always going to be worth considerably more than a chevelle ss someone pieced together and that's conservatively them you get the guys that add 22 inch wheels rip out the interior drop another engine in it etc it might look nice and be cool for that guy but the car enthusiasts will cringe and wonder why anyone would ruin such a beautiful vehicle. I guess aftermarket stuff may be cool for a watch you got from the pawn shop. Back to your point I said modding a real watch doesn't make it fake however it does decrease it's value no matter how big the diamond bezel you put on it and we all know you won't get a fraction of what you paid if you try to resell that same diamond bezel.
Lemnisgate It is proper to compare luxury watches to luxury cars, at the end of the day, they're both primarily tools. People also enjoy modding and just dont care about resale value. If you're so afraid and concerned of the resale value of the watch that it's all you think about after buying the watch, it means that you could barely afford the watch in the first place.
Ahmed Raza The Oyster Perpetual 39. You can pick one up for $4800-5200. However I would strongly recommend looking into finding a 16610 submariner for the same price in really good condition. If you want new, then OP39 or Air King, but a nice 5 digit sub will be worth more than you paid for it in 5 years. Can't say the same for the others. If it's your first watch then go new but get it from a trusted seller for a nice discount. Only watches worth walking into Rolex to pay MSRP for are the ceramic Daytona, the Red Sea-Dweller 43, 116710BLNR and 116610LV Green sub (Hulk).
thnx lecorsaire i m looking to buy rolex for a long time now. i really want to buy daytona but for now its expensive so i will only go for brand new. i live in mid east so here i dont know any used trusted stores although many jewelers here sell used watches but there is no way to tell if its real. i think iwill go for datejust. but lets see i still want save a little bit more.
Thank you so much for this video Sir! I just purchased two pre owned date just Rolex’s and I’m getting them appraised now. However I now know they won’t be like the counter feit $30 models Everything matters on the inside! And I truly believe I have the real deals with after market diamonds
Old vid so i know you’re probably not gonna answer...but what if..i bought a movement from a real Rolex that was broken and destroyed..repaired it, then bought an authentic case and basically built it from scratch out of authentic parts from broken watches or factory new parts...kinda like buying a 62 Mustang out of a barn and putting it back together from scratch.....is it fake or is it real
lol I am building a frankenstein. I am putting a Rolex movement into an aftermarket case, with faux-lex dial, hands, etc. right now. lol. It isn't a Rolex but it will look and work just as good as a real one!!! For less than a third of the price! I have owned Rolex watches for decades. I stopped being a sucker who pays for the name. I sold all my Rolex watches and I am replacing them with watches that I have built from genuine Rolex movements, and "aftermarket" counterfeit parts. lol. Thank you China!!!
The watch in my opinion becomes fake when you get an aftermarket case. For example with many custom AP royal oaks that are iced out, some places just install aftermarket cases with the diamonds already on them. At that point it is just a replica AP watch with an Ap movement. Its like building a replica of a Ferrari and installing the engine from the original car. However when it comes to watches that are mostly original and maybe have an aftermarket dial or bezel, I see no issue. With those its pretty much like adding some wheels and a spoiler to your car. OEM+ is what I call it. Then we move on to fully iced out watches, in that situation its like adding a wide body kit to your car. When it comes to car wide body kits, if it is high quality most people will love it. The same way with an iced out datejust. The key word with all aftermarket things added to watches is quality, a shit quality iced out datejust with si diamonds, will never be as good as a quality iced out datejust with vvs diamonds. Personally I'm the person who doesn't care what you buy as long as the aftermarket parts are quality. There are a ton of factors, but if you like it and its high quality and at the right price. But it
I WILL ALWAYS BUY REPLICAS- I can enjoy the style without the ABSURDELY HIGH MARKUP. And BTW, even rich people wear mostly replicas of the watches they bought which are kept in a vault.
+Sirjean5 agree with you 👍👍
Sirjean5 very interesting point... what if I buy a Ferrari replica and I stick in a real Ferrari engine, does it make it a real Ferrari?
+Rob Logan a Bamford is not a replica. You need to recheck your definition of a replica.
Still junk though right? :)
Not agree..
Some Franklen builds uses original manufacturer movement.
I bought a Rolex Submariner with a broken dial and bracelet, bought a new original dial (black and gold) and a new bracelet for it. Ive been told its fake from nobrainers who dont even wear watches. Im sick of explaining to everyone how its not fake.

ok...I watched 30 seconds, I heard NO, and it's enough
Bamford Watch Department is ruling the game with their Carbon dial customization ! Please do a video on Reputable watch customisers like Bamford, Eric !

Bamford is the shittiest customizer of watches out there. Zoom in on their pictures of customized rolex watches. The paint looks like a 5 year old did it.
ThePhiltastic what are your preferred companies for customization? Bamford isn't bad it's just a different style I guess.
Bamford is terrible
Dino Craig i think ember does a great job with customizing
Like a jubilee bracelet on a Rolesium (I now it's not for everybody, but I love it!) ...
classic kool wow that'll look amazing

It's not the watch that makes the man, it's the man who makes the watch !
That is correct.
the watch doesn't do anything except for telling you what time it is
a Casio for you then, enjoy!
lol ok...
Thomgxx100 I have a G-shock Frogman bought new among others and some of these high end Master of G Frogman models are selling for $30000 !
I think when you want to keep the watch forever and it s very personal it s okay.
for retail it s not the best Choice
It's a 50/50 really.
Your that dude Eric, nice vid keep up the good work, side question you ever thought about making reviews on designer merch, or accessories I'm sure it will be entertaining
Yes I have.
Also I find stones go better with white PMs. On white gold or platinum, diamonds can add a touch of elegance. On YG, anything more than a champagne dial with diamond dial is too much.
what if all the parts are quality made by factories outside of rolex. Does that mean if a fake watch is high in quality , its good?
+tree yaers orld nah.
What do you think about hand engraved patek ?
I think its badass. But definitely a keeper piece.
so what If I ice out the whole watch does it devalue the watch??
Depends on the quality. Will not devalue. But you may not get what you spent on it back.
Yes it does, putting aftermarket diamonds on the watch won’t increase its value unless you sell it to someone on the street who doesn’t know watches.
Eric
Sensitive subject, but you handled it like a boss. Thumbs up man! PS still waiting for a review on a Breitling :-)
Eric, what's the best place to find a submariner diamond dial in terms of quality??
I really dont like Dial changes, but Bezels on certain models looks fine for me. great video as always! cheers
Thanks for watching!
Dial changes are great in cheaper watches like Seiko 5 not Pateks
hi,Eric .My friend bought a luxury watch online ,apparently ,he got a fake one.Can you do some videos .How to identify the real and the fake one?(rolex,AP,breitling).

is the new explorer 1 or the oyster 39mm worth buying or just jump to a more expensive piece?
Go for the next model up.
CRM Jewelers what rolex should I buy for my first rolex If im buying new?
Corey Core doesnt every other person own a sub is it to common meaning its nothing special since everyone owns one?
+John John They do. But that does not make the 39mm any special either.
How about the BLNR?
"Or let's say you just want to go straight savage with it"😂😂😂 had me dyin' loved the video😂 and I agree 100% with your points. I really wanna purchase a watch from you guys in the future!

Can someone have the lights turned down so he doesn’t have to wear sunglasses? 😂
keep up the great content man , you're awesome
Thanks for watching!
Where do you draw the line of where customization goes too far?
whats your thoughts on Companies like Bamford Watch Department and custom PVD coatings
+Anthony Petrone Bamford by Far is the best at that. Im a little turned off by the prices.
CRM Jewelers do you think resale is affected by voiding the warranty or the customization or does it increase slightly
You can’t get an aftermarket rolex worked on in an authentic rolex jeweler. They will either replace with authentic or can’t work on it.
I recently blinged up my 16600. I bought it three years ago, bezel's one of those twenty dollar fakes from Amazon. That's ok when I get it serviced I'll get the right one put on, but 'till then, the lume pip fell off, so I superglued a a little plastic fake diamond in its place.
I like these videos. Keep 'em coming.
+logwind will do 👍
Just scooped my first day date but I’m going to have to get an aftermarket band because it didn’t come with one
The 911 comparisons will triple my OCD tonight Eric 🙈🙈🙈.
+Christo Chrysostomou lol. I like factory. But don't mind an altered piece.

agreed - I replaced my dial on my datejust with a diamond marker dial from Rolex I don't think it diminishes the value at all It would have it it was not a rolex replacement
+John Gentile Factory is always factory.
Still voids the warranty Rolex demands their watch remain as sold.
what about a black sub the they modified to blue dial and blue bezel to fake it as a Smurf. or green to fake it as a Hulk?
You hit right on the head.
What matters is what's on the inside
Ain't that the truth.
What happen if one Rolex Is restored with your original parts by Rolex dial case movimient AND hands ? Is Fake or mod ? Or semi original
I have a question, and hope you’re still monitoring comments.....what if the movement is authentic Rolex Cellini with the factory dial but there is an aftermarket case?

If you ever put a Rolex logo or insignia on parts not made in Rolex factory in Geneva, you are in deep waters. Hows your comment on this?. "The value of things is only adequate to how much somebody would like to pay for it". All the best.
What are your thoughts on custom engraving (bezel and strap)? some stuff ive seen is beautiful.
So the dials are not official Rolex ?
A lot of the dials aren't.
@@Crmjewelers I didn't know that, I wouldn't mind adding an aftermarket bezel, but I think not having an official Rolex Dial is a step too far for me
Hey Eric, my 21st birthday is coming up here, and in Australia 21st is a big thing, I was wondering if you could give me some suggestions, I have a Chrono Seiko (my first watch) in stainless steel, I've had it for many years and will always keep it within my family, the next watch I feel for my 21st will have a leather strap, I want a luxurious feeling, but the feeling that I can wear it not only to formal events, but wear it to appreciate it !
I spent quite a bit on both watches not anything near the $23000 however still quite a bit from a family run business
I love what "les artisans de geneve" do with rolex for example
Got two nice watches with clarkes crystals replacing the originals, good enough.
What about aftermarket diamond bands.
I like the military textile straps on a sub
ME Too..Thanks for watching!
Im thinking about buying a Rolex. Cant decide between a gmt master II 116710 and a yachtmaster platinum. What do think is the better watch (my first "luxury" watch) Thanks love your Videos!
+Tbb Scm I would take the GMT. More contrast and its a Classic.
add diamond insead of buying an original, if you really want to make noise and not willing to pay more, because there will never be a third party would can embed and cut diamond even nearly as exquisite as rolex, AP or patek, aside from the stone grading. (frankly, thats why the original one is so expensive).
what about bamford and stuff like those
How about getting replacement original Rolex claps?
These timepieces are art it’s improper to compare them to a car, you wouldn’t get your chisel and chip at a Rodin statue would you? Of course you think mods are fine you’re bias because you sell and promote aftermarket watches therefore one can’t really look to you for advice that’s like asking the pawnshop if they’re giving you the best deal.
Lets get something straight.. That is YOUR opinion. A person can do with the piece of property what ever he likes.
of course a person can do what so ever they please with their purchase but that's not the title of your video, hell I could buy a watch and throw it in the lake if I wanted again that's not the point although if someone found that watch later still running in its original condition it would still be worth more than most of these modded and franken watches. what's trendy now will be passé sooner than one thinks, if you have money to burn and plan on keeping every watch them by all means as I previously stated do as you please but if you are collecting from an investment standpoint and enjoying your watch while it ages and appreciates in value then leave it stock.
How can you compare a watch to a car? Completely different
Keep the factory dial and the bezel. Best of both worlds
Quality can be rather subjective sometimes huh?
do people just throw away the original parts after they add the custom ones? lol
I think people will understand better especially. When u compared it to cars. Duhhhhh. I just did lol
Thanks for watching!
ok finally, tell me what is cheapest brand new rolex i can buy eric???? thnx
its rolex air king
NO way, on the custom dial, unacceptable, Eric!
What about custom engraved watches?
I'd say it's real.
lol I am building a frankenstein.
But it
Surprised they didn’t call these watches - bespoke! 😆
I'm a simple man. I see Akira Nakai I like.
I WILL ALWAYS BUY REPLICAS- I can enjoy the style without the ABSURDELY HIGH MARKUP. And BTW, even rich people wear mostly replicas of the watches they bought which are kept in a vault.
The date just at 2:48😍😍😍
