Male-preference primogeniture and salic law have meant that most European monarchs have been men. Queen regnants are exceedingly rare in history. But for 90 years from 1890 to 1980 The Netherlands was reigned over by three successive Queens. Wilhelmina inherited the throne after the early deaths of all three of her brothers, Juliana because she was an only child and Beatrix because she was the eldest of 4 sisters. These Queens were heroes of the first and second world wars, the first female billionaires, courted controversy with their choices of husbands and friends and won the admiration of their people with their down-to-earth style. Let’s meet the three Queens of the Netherlands. Queen Wilhelmina, Queen Juliana & Queen Beatrix.

Imagine if Queen Wilhelmina didn’t abdicate: she’d be the first Queen Regnant to celebrate 70 years on the throne and celebrate her Platinum Jubilee. Seventy-two years and five days (23 November 1890 - 28 November 1962) would be considered the second longest reign of any monarch in history.
That's crazy to think about! She lived such a long life.
@@smollbaguette1084 Well really she didn’t, I mean don’t get me wrong 82 is still a good age to live to… but the only reason she would have reigned for so long is that she inherited the throne at only 10! Unbelievable today if you think about it, becoming Queen at that age.

"Badass" maybe, but she was simply following in the footsteps of her forefathers! In the time of stadhouder-King Willem III, invasion by the French under Louis XIV was prevented in the same way. Before that, under William the Silent, numerous cities were saved from Spanish attack also by controlled flooding. The Dutch Queen was simply being Dutch 😂.

Back in the eighteen years war, there was the third leader of the rebellion against Spain of House Orange-Nassau, Frederik Willem, whom could be considered the first actual royal if the Netherlands, he built a lot of significant palaces and was a brilliant statesman. He was also a great commander. He earned the nickname "Stedendwinger" for his many successful sieges. The Spanish believed he couldn't take Den Bosch/'S Hertogenbosch because it was marshy land. But Frederik Willem called out a guy called Leeghwater who literally pumped the marshland around the city dry. Frederik Willem might yet be one of the greatest and underestimated leaders we ever had, closely followed by Louis/Lodewijk I Bonaparte.

With all the extramarital affair’s and illegitimate children royals used to (and still do) have, it’s safe to say that at least half of Europe population is in some way related to a royal house.
Anyone with European ancestry probably has a good chance of being related to a royal house as well.

The bond between Willamina and Emma was pretty cute, not to mention it's a real refresher with how we occasionally get the Royal mothers and their children that are not on good terms. Also can we appreciate the fact that Queen Victoria called Willamina cute?

There's a part in Gone With the Wind (book) where Scarlett uses the word 'cute' so I guess it must have entered the English language as a slang term that eventually became accepted as a proper word by the Victorian era since it's hard to imagine Queen Victoria herself using slang.
It's Wilhelmina. Btw I'm from Indonesia once part of the Dutch empire, and my grandma was born during queen wilhelmina reign. She still remember both queen wilhelmina and queen juliana as the queen of the Netherlands
I believe Queen Emma saved the monarchy and saved the family. My great grandmother always called her mother Emma for her positive influence on Wilhelmina and the government.
Queen Wilhelmina is one of the "lucky" White House visitors who encountered the ghost of Abraham Lincoln. While staying at the White House in 1942, she heard a knocking on her door late at night. She opened it and there stood the Lincoln's ghost. She promptly fainted.

I must say that I love how much all of these Queen's weren't afraid to get down in the literal flood, mud, rain and everything else when their people needed them the most. Juliana and Wilhelmina were model wartime Queens.

Fun fact about Wilhelmina, she refused to leave the Netherlands originally when they were invaded by the Nazi's. The prime minister of the Netherlands had to practically drag her out of the country. Juliana's husband further refused to leave the country when he was in command of the army at Zeeland, the only standing province by the end of the invasion (they held out at least 5 days after the original surrender so that French and Brittish troops could escape at Dunkirk). The only reason Zeeland stood longer was because they had a French tank devision. Queen Wilhelmina called him to the UK and he refused twice before finally relenting.

Not just a "fun fact" but a very good strategic move on the part of the Dutch PM to insist that the Queen leave for London where he had set up a Government-in-Exile.
King Leopold III of the Belgians also refused to leave Belgium when the Germans invaded and so he stayed put. Look at what happened to him! 😱
Here's another fun fact: SEVERAL monarchs ran govts in exile from Britain during the war, in addition to Wilhelmina. One was King Peter of Yugoslavia (the young man standing next to British King George VI in this video's photo) and another was Emperor Haile Salassie of Ethiopia. Haile Salassie was the lucky one though, his country was the first of them to be liberated and he returned home in 1941. It's very possible Wilhelmina dined with each of them.
Well I doubt we where at that period of time. We went trough extreme economic crisis during and shortly before the first world war. Many fugitisves due to our neutrality and in between fighting world powers. Health care around then must have been realy bad and our length is a side effect from brilliant healthcare nowadays

Queen Wilhelmena being the only daughter who gave birth to an only child, Queen Juliana, who gave birth to 4 daughters, with Queen Beatrix who gave birth to 3 sons with King Willem who has 3 daughters- woah 🤯
As the gender of the child is determined by the father, it is noteworthy that all six of Prince Bernard's known children are daughters.
The story of Princess Juliana's escape to Canada is legendary here. The tulips in Ottawa remain to this day, not the same ones from the forties granted.
Queen Wilhelmina gifted a tulip garden to my city. It is next to the Dutch Windmill in Golden Gate Park.
We have a tulip festival in Ottawa every year.
It still amazes me how badass our queens are! Also it's kind of funny how most foreigners refer to the princess of orange as Catharina Amalia, wheras most dutch people refer to her as just Amalia, I didn't even know that she was actually called that untill I heard it in one of your previous videos

Its because having multiple names refers to catholocism and wel we are a protestant nation. Prob was some compensation between willem and maxima because she is catholic. But well we only use the main name
A lady at the nursing home I work at just told me yesterday about how she used to see Queen Juliana at the market in the town near her summer home in Italy, she'd come there with her bike, park it by the church, and go off shopping. I found that very charming.
So many wonderful stories hidden away in nursing homes!
My friend came to the US in the 1950s by boat from the Netherlands leaving Rotterdam at age 11. He said his Mother and Queen Juliana shared the same birth date and she sent his Mother an annual Birthday Card. I thought that was so sweet.
Some minor points of interest: Queens Juliana and Beatrix both abdicated on the same Queen's Day, April 30, which makes it both easy to remember and, for Beatrix, a reign of exactly 33 years. Also, after retiring the queens downgraded to the title of Princess, so the former queen Beatrix is today known as Princess Beatrix. The famous Maho Beach on St. Marten (where large airplanes land over a nearby beach) is at Princess Juliana Airport, though it was named for her before she became queen.

One thing that always pops into my mind when I think about Juliana is that in her diary; Anne Frank writes about how much she admires the royals and listened for updates about how they were and pinned pictures of them up in the annexe
Queen Wilhelmina was an amazing leader, something even an Indonesian like me have to admit. Her dedication for her country mirrors our own founding fathers' for Indonesia, and that's something I can really respect. She really tried her best to protect her country, whether it's politically, militarily or economically, and I can see why the Netherlands loved her so much
We may have a dark history with each other, but I hope Indonesia and Netherlands can continue to go hand in hand towards a bright future

Ottawa (where I live) still has a Tulip Festival every year to honour the friendship with the Netherlands.
One of the things I remember well from my WW2 part of history class is that Canadian soldiers stayed for a far longer time than other countries’ soldiers to help rebuild the Netherlands. Of course, other countries had other priorities, but I like how the Netherlands and Canada still hold this friendship between the countries.

I'd like to see something on Queen Desideria of Sweden. She had an interesting life. Born a merchants daughter in Marseilles, France, her family surviving the French revolution, was engaged to Napoleon while he was still a General in the French army, (he left her for Josephine), but her sister married his brother, and married another general who was adopted by the swedish King to be his heir, eventually making her Queen of Sweden, and her descendents sit on the Swedish throne today.

As Crown Princess of Sweden, she got into trouble for doing unroyal things like visiting the local silk shops, and she had to return to France for several years. (She was a bit kooky, doing things like attending the opera but only arriving after the performance was finished...)

Queen Beatrix is not like Queen Elizabeth. No ostentatious formalities or bowing or I’m royal and you are not… She dedicated the American School of the Hague in 1991. No guards, no extreme formality. I walked out right next to her. A lovely family with the heart of the people always in the forefront!!

The Netherlands and UK are two different kingdom tho. UK monarchy has a longer continuous history that can be traced to the middle ages. And they used to rule half of the world and still have a big influence until today
My Great Great Great grandma and her sister were actually good friends with Wilhelmina,they met as children through their mothers being best friends and they also kept friendly interactions,they were named Floris and Ilse. They became Lady in waitings for Wilhemina at a young age,when they were 11 and 9. They were there for Wilhelmina until she died,they went to her wedding,most trips she went on and were amazing friends. Floris got married 1898 to a Dutch Count. However,it was an arranged marriage that they weren't keen on,and they despised each other. And Floris even made it clear as in a party,she yelled,I have a husband who's good at 1 thing(silence),having affairs with fat ugly cows that aren't his wife and left that party a controversial women. He Divorced her for adultery,yet noone believed him,and he was imprisoned for his lies by the Queen herself. This made Wilhemina and Floris have an unbreakable bond that made them closer than ever. Floris remarried in 1908,to a wealthy Marquess of England,where she left Netherlands to presume her royalty in England. She got pregnant at the age 29 and had a baby girl,named Isabelle. People questioned why she had a baby at 29,and not earlier. But she shunned them,if they were fat,she would say go use ur time wisely by exercising,and if they were skinny she'd say,go to a chef,ask for food so u can gain a few'. And then come back to me. She was sassy yet still classy and composed. She had another baby at age 31,to another girl named Johanna. In 1914,World War 1 broke out and her family resigned back in the Netherlands. She reunited with Wilhelmina,and the Queen even bought them a Palace just for the 2 families to stay in. Ilse had a much more boring life,but passed away in 1915 as the Palace she was staying in was bombed by the Germans,and her family later joined her. Johanna and Isabelle were just like their mother and aunt,Johanna was rational and radiant,like Floris,but Isabelle was quite sweet and shy,like Ilse. They were also friends with the Queen,especially Johanna. As a gift,Johanna bought a necklace which was 80,000 for the Queen,and the Queen gave Johanna a royal estate near her Palace. Johanna was to be wed in 1937,but on the wedding day,she tool everyone's jewelry and outfits,sold it and cancelled the wedding,she spent the money on charity and yelled "Who needs expensive dresses when you have all these cheap knock off brands". And never got married
Willem III wanted to marry his mistress, the opera singer Émilie Ambre, but parlement turned that idea down.
Also, his nickname in the press was 'Koning Gorilla' or King Gorilla.

As an Indonesian, this is such an interesting thing to watch, not only because of the obvious historical connection reason (I mean, the first 2 monarchs' name often appeared in my history textbooks which made me interested in learning more about them when I saw the title) but I was also interested on how the situation and things happened in Indonesia (or back then Dutch East Indies) affected the The Netherlands and its monarchy back home in Europe.
Well it surely benefited them really well... in the cost of the Indonesian people ofc..

I remember a story of a soldier just after the war when the royal family returned. The young princess Beatrix had trouble with the steep aircraft stairs so he helped her down. He put the future Queen back on Dutch soil with his own hands.
my parents met Juliana and Bernhard when my mom was pregnant with me. My mom loved Juliana loved the princess so much she named me after her 🥰 love learning more about my namesake, such an amazing woman

I’m from the Netherlands and in my hometown we have a lot of descendants from prince Henry. He always hunted in the Veluwe (a area with wild animals and a lot of nature) and had a lot of mistresses there. Most of these women where farmers daughters or wives.

I am sorry, I am Canadian, and I am aware that the Queen of the Netherlands resides in Canada during WWII. I wonder which Queen it was, and to this day, Ottawa, our Canadian capital, is honored by thousands of tulip bulbs. If you ever have the occasion to visit Ottawa in the spring when those tulips bloom, it is a sight to behold, and we always honor the Netherlands.
The ones residing in Ottawa during the war were heir presumptive princess Juliana and her two eldest daughters, Beatrix and Irene, her third daughter Margriet was born there.

I remember my grandma once told me a story when she was a child, she was once given a candy by Queen Wilhelmina and the other children too when The Queen was in Indonesia (which back than was Dutch East Indies)
The last exiled German emperor Wilhelm II he lived and died in Doorn the Netherlands. Queen Wilhelmina was the one to let him stay but she never visited him. He is buried in Doorn and his former house is a museum.

I lived in NL for quite a long while and was there on the first King's day parade, saw the sir up close myself as a mere 14yo.
And even he had quite the issues with his marriage, since Queen Maxima, is the daughter of a well known international criminal. But just like in the past with prince Claus, she is now very beloved by the dutch people(sometimes even a bit more than her own husband).
Amalia is known for being in general very down to earth, my friend's younger sister goes to the same highschool as her and has said she pretty much hangs out with everyone and isn't necessarily stuck up. Neither are her sisters.
The dutch monarchy continues to have popularity regardless of all the shit show, exactly because of that, they are down to earth, their children grow up with the people and they are just in general very nice. Thank u so much for making this video about them!!
Funny Fact: Queen Elizabeth was coronated just a while after queen Juliana(around 5 years I think) and she saw her abdication, Beatrix coronation, abdication, and the rise of Willem lol. She is also very good friends with Beatrix since their youth!
Royalty being down to Earth is exactly the opposite of what should make them monarchs. Might as well disband the Royal Family at that point. They should be above the people, that's what Royalty is for.

By the way, those trying to ram the gates at Soesdijk palace were not Indonesian revolutionaries. By 1975 there were no Indonesian revolutionaries. Indonesian independence was acknowledged by the Dutch in 1949. The people at Soestdijk were Dutch nationals of Moluccan descent unhappy because the Dutch had not kept their promises to them.

I am honestly saddend by the decrease in popularity of the monarchie. I find it to be something beautiful and bonding. They do so much good work all around the world, serve as face of our country and give me a sense of unification of our nation. I'm proud to have a royal family who do not dictate the country, but serve the country to the best of their ability. They unite us, and strenghten us when the need arises.
It's a very complex subject... here in my country (🇧🇷) if Dom Pedro II wasn't thrown out in a coup, his descendants would suffer the same fate. He was, and somewhat still is, a popular figure despite everything.
His descendants however, are a whole other story. This makes the monarchy, our empire, unlikely to ever make a return.
They are a target of jokes now when they pronounce themselves as "emperor" or "prince" in the present form. Stuff like "they are the NPC's of the country" or, when a person emphasizes it's surname a lot, "your name is Orleans and Bragança?" (the royal surnames here). More so, there is the scandal of taxes that people of Petropolis (a countryside city in the state of Rio de Janeiro) have to pay until today, straight to the family, when they acquire a parcel of land or real estate in some parts of the city. This was a situation of extreme upset among the people when heavy rains ravaged Petrópolis twice in the last decade, and the family offered nothing except prays.
There was one thing worthy of some sympathy regarding them though, the fire at the National Museum. The losses were heavy for the country history and overall researching sciences, and many articles of memorabilia were lost. Among them, the paper in which Princess Isabel signed the law that banned slavery in our country.
More so, the National Museum was the imperial palace and acted as the parliament building when our first republican constitution was drafted and discussed.
For queens like Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix, I would run through a tank. For emperors like the current generation of the Orleans and Bragança family, defection was certain.

The elite formed of former slave oweners from coffee and sugar cane plantation. Our reforme wasn't a popular one, but an elite one. And Princess Isabel was still popular. If they weren't deposed, she'd probably marry a more important royal, and the current former brazilian household wouldn't be the one we have today.

Noongan Hospital, a hospital in the province of North Sulawesi, a province in Indonesia, was built by the Dutch colonial as a tribute to Queen Emma of the kingdom of Netherlands. Was built in 1932, and inaugurated on July 16, 1934 by Governor De Jong under the name "Koningin Emma Sanatorium te Noongan" or "Sanatorium Emma Noongan". I've heard that the original building of the hospital is in the shape of the letter E when viewed from above which is the initials of Queen Emma.

As described, Queen Emma was Queen Consort but served as Regent from the time of the King's death, and so she carried out all the duties & functions of Queen & Head of State for her daughter for 8 years. That should count as being the first of 4 Queens, I reckon.

(Personally, Queen Emma is a favourite of mine, and she was loved & admired by the Dutch in her day.
Out of duty to her family, this minor German princess aged 20 years agreed to marry the 62 year-old widower, Willem III, "King Gorilla", an aggressive psychopath who abused his first wife, and who was a known "hoerenjager" frequenter of Paris brothels and likely syphilitic. Miraculously, Queen Emma conceived of a child and thus can be regarded the saviour of the Dutch House of Orange. Emma nurtured & taught Wilhelmina who could take over smoothly at 18 years.
As Regent from 1890, aged only 32, she was Head of State in an all-male Hague-government unused to female rule, and essentially Queen Emma assertively created role & model that her daughter could step into when she came of age. Imagine!

My Oma survived in the North…she remembers the days when Juliana visited their bakery for my Great Opa’s boterkoek after the war. Oma immigrated to Canada with my Opa in the early 1950s because of the way Canadians helped the Dutch during the war. I love hearing the stories about these remarkable Queens, because it reminds me of my Oma - strong women, all.

I'm from Indonesia once part of the Dutch empire, and my grandma was born during queen wilhelmina reign. She still remember both queen wilhelmina and queen juliana as the queen of the Netherlands. Queen Juliana was the queen who sign away our independence from the Netherlands, not long after she was took the throne. She's also the first Dutch monarch who came to Indonesia, and were very welcome by the people!

I can't believe how old she is. When I was a kid I met Queen Beatrix. We were living in the Netherlands when her mother died. There is also a picture of prins Willem talking to my sister when she was very small. She didn't know who he was. I definitely thought amalia was university age now, if she's born in 2003.

It's so great that Dutch Kings and Queens can abdicate when they feel like it's enough, enjoy a real retirement and still can give advices if needed to their sons or daughters. And the sons and daughters can enjoy their coronation with having them there as well. That's beautiful. They set a pretty nice example. On January 31 2013 (then) Queen Beatrix announced she was going to abdicate on April 30. A couple of days later Pope Benedict made a similar announcement but with a shorter time frame. Later that year King Albert of the Belgians abdicated. In 2014 King Juan-Carlos of Spain abdicated and in 2019 Emperor Akihito abdicated (contrary to Japanese legislation, which had to be amended to allow it happening).

I had a good friend who was from The Netherlands now deceased, who came to the US in the early 1950s . His Mother had the same Birth Date as Queen Wilhelmina and every year she received a Birthday card from her. I thought that was so lovely.

Many Dutch were forced into forced labor in Germany. In Indonesia, then the Dutch East Indies, many people were killed or locked up in labor camps, including the Burma railway, where many died.

Very interesting video about three remarkable ladies! Since we’re on the topic of Queen-Regnants, would you consider making one about Isabella II of Spain? I’m rather interested in her life story and sometimes think she’s overlooked, especially compared to her only other (European) Queen-Regnant contemporary, Queen Victoria (I’m not counting Queen Wilhelmina since only took power close to the end of their reigns).

Absolutely. To be honest we have been blessed with extraordinary women in that position, and all of them are incredibly insightful and intelligent in their own right. Juliana was a true queen of the people, very humble and down to earth, Beatrix was very well versed in ( international ) law and politics, famously worked long hours every day to ensure she was up to date with everything happening in the parlament, held counsil with the prime minister daily. And Wilhelmina was as resillient and strong as they come. If Amalia even has a sliver of any of them in her ( which she has, she gratuated cum laude from secondary and is going to uni to study for a bachelor's degree in politics, psychology, law and economics. She refuses to take any "salary" or allowance from the state until she feels she is actually contributing something to the country ) then we can expect another great queen in the future.
The quite well achieved attempt to pronounce Dutch names is very much appreciated. Especially in the case of the royal palace 'Het Loo' not becoming 'The Loo'.

I’m currently studying at Leiden University, and during a break the topic of the Royal family came up ( we’re mostly international students in my course) and how the last few monarchs attended the school, but princesses Amalia decided to go to Amsterdam, so we joked that we were denied having her as a classmate 😅
