  • The Google Sheets XLOOKUP and VLOOKUP functions have many key differences. Here is one such difference: XLOOKUP can return a single value or an entire row or column in which the search key is found. VLOOKUP can return only a single value.

The syntax of the XLOOKUP function formula is:
    =XLOOKUP(search_key, lookup_range, result_range, [missing_value], [match_mode], [search_mode])
Let's look at an example of XLOOKUP function formula:
    Example
    =XLOOKUP("Doug", B7:B14, A7:D14, , 2)
    search_key is "Doug".
lookup_range, B7 to B14, is the range to lookup for the search key.
    result_range is range A7 to D14.
Assume that the search key is found in cell B8. XLOOKUP will return data
    in cells A8 to D8.
Here's the syntax of the VLOOKUP function formula:
    =VLOOKUP(search_key, range, index, [is_sorted])
    Example
    =VLOOKUP("Doug",B7:B14,3,0)
search_key in this example also is "Doug".
    range is B7 to B14.
index is 3, which means the data in the third cell from the cell with the search key.
is_sorted is 0, which means the data is not sorted.
If search key is found in cell B8, VLOOKUP will return data in cell D8, which is the third cell from B8.
