What a sad story. Luckily the governess was able to find a new life in the US. How sad for the Duchess. Her husband treated her no better than furniture.
Not a fan of governess, but maybe she realized how wrong she was - sinning- and chose to go straight. Smart idea of leaving country for America. She seemed to make right choices in USA and had a good life.

Intriguing story and very captivating. I do not understand why men couldn't be loyal to a wife who is helping further your political standing in polite society. I'm not sure the governess was involved with the duke . Many women of that era were exploited by their employer and forcefully taken advantage of , i can see the duchess believing it was an affair. Thank you again for your great stories and all the hard work that goes into them. 🖤 always a faithful friend .
Enjoyed listening with my cup of coffee ☕️ What a bumbled murder which makes me think the Duke hadn’t premeditated to off his wife. It’s great when you narrate a story one has to think about. Very good BC!
So much like the times back then. The men get theirselves a young beautiful bride making them have kid after kid (most don’t live). The woman is now older, body changes and husband either dumps them in the country area and have affairs or do what this guy did. They usually have some low life do them in or making it look like an accident.
The movie All This And Heaven Too with Bette Davis, is based on this story, based on a book by a descendant of Henriette deLouzy Desportes. It definitely puts a different light on the story. The wife is portrayed as mentally unbalanced and a truly awful woman. The husband killed her, but the wife made sure everyone went down with her. Of course, the movie only gave her two children.
Wow another crime of passion I'm of the belief the servent was innocent and I'm glad things worked out for her here in the states. As for the duke it would suck to know he escaped justice and even fathered more children.
I can see how she felt like her union was so precious. At a time when loveless weddings arranged by interest among the elite were common, she regarded herself as one of the luckiest. She tried to grip unto it with the energy of despair, but unfortunately her feverish devotion wasn't reciprocal.
@Subhuman Trash You can't control whether you fall out in love, unfortunately. It takes the bitter acceptance of the impermanence of things, to live happier. For that lady, it was just too difficult to still live under the same roof with an estranged one she still loved...
"All This And Heaven Too" Bette Davis as The Governess. Charles Boyer as The Duke and Barbara O'Neill (Scarlett's Mother in Gone With The Wind) as The Duchess. Ms. O'Neill received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her portrayal of The Duchess. Excellent Film.
@@kathypappas6867 The Duchess' love was more like an obsession. She wrote hundreds of letters to her husband to him even when he was under the same roof.
@@ibelieveinyourgalaxy Like Queen Victoria, she was so enthralled by her husband that she put her children a distant second, The duchess was not all that upset that the governess had won the children's affection. Because her husband, a fond father, spent so much time with the children, he was in constant contact with the governess. The Duchess was, therefore, angry about her husband's proximity to the governess. The governess was pleasant-looking and sympathetic, but if the Duke was inclined to find a mistress he could have found someone more exciting and beautiful. The governess may have had a "crush" on her employer but it is unlikely that there any romance between the Duke and Henriette.
andrea troisi I agree, it doesn’t sound like it, but men usually get involved with women who are most easily accessible; sister-in-law, best friend of wife, governess, etc. Regardless of her looks or even her bearing, sometimes. It can be a real head-scratcher when the lover is compared to the wife🤦🏽♀️😁.
So heartbreaking. She loved her husband dearly and he lost interest because of her weight gain and looks Even though she bore him 10 children, he turned away from her to a younger pretty woman. This story has been repeated so many times with other couples but usually the man doesn't murder the woman whose heart he broke.
The Duke was devoted to his children. The duchess probably loved her children but she, in her emotions, placed them a distant second to her husband. Queen Victoria displayed the same obsessive love for her husband, but Albert was more patient and sympathetic than the Duke.
I enjoyed this particular case about this Duchess and her "distant" husband. I really had expected the Duchess was going to kill her "unlovable" husband instead of the Duchess being brutally murdered. I noticed that the governess later said that she didn't have an affair with the Duchess's husband. But, it still was a sad case either way for everyone concerned.
Caught between a rock and a hard place. Beauty and youth in women can be a curse. She is damned if she does and damned if she doesn't. Even if she didn't have a affair she may as well have. You can only begin to imagine if you had any kind of looks and you had to work men would take or try to take advantage. If you didn't give in you still ended up at fault. Cold, prick tease or just a slut either way.
The Duchess denied the governess a letter of good character that the governess would need toobtain another position. In the nineteenth century, any servant or governess was very dependent on having a "good character". The Duke may have been angry because of his wife's pettiness. The night of the murder, the Duke probably just "snapped".
And he liked her enpugh to keep her pregs constantly...then treats her like trash after she was a good and socially acceptable wife- then murders her and the worst that happens is house arrest and upscale lounge wagging? I for one hope that he was poisoned and suffered
I love when you do these cases where the person you name in the title is the victim, coz I was sure we are gonna learn how Henriette was murdered by Françoise, but no PLOT TWIST! Poor Duchesse though, she never really got justice, her husband was a cruel narcissistic man 😢
The couple married very young and were at first admired for their devotion. The duke had no interest in the governess, but it is possible the nanny had a crush on the duke. The nanny was all that beautiful. Society would have overlooked an affair between the duke and a chorus girl, but rumors of an aristocrat having an affair with a Protestant nanny under his own roof was considered a disgrace. The author of "All This and Heaven Too" was a relative by marriage to the nanny. @@Orphen42O
1) When a case includes “a young, pretty governess” (nanny/maid) you know where it’s going. 2) Madam Françoise got the wrong end of the stick in all of this: 10(9) kids by the time she was 32 (😮) , a scoundrel for a husband who she loved, no say in anything and an employee who was undermining her marriage. 3) ... D’Lucy WAS intelligent- She got in with her married employer who she knew couldn’t afford a scandal if he broke ties with her. 4) The Duke didn’t deserve his wife but he did deserve
The phrase "wrong end of the stick" refers to a misunderstanding. Saying the Duchess got the wrong end of the stick means, she misunderstood the situation. I think you meant to say she "drew the short straw" which refers to bad luck, or an unfortunate situation.
@@Orphen42O I have read that, psychologically, men are hardwired to regard a woman taking care of their kids, as their wife! That may apply to maids too.I still blame the man, it's his choice, but...
@@lazyhomebody1356 I never knew that. It is an interesting fact that explains why so many celebrities have become romantically involved with their nanny, au pair or housekeeper. Robin Williams and his wife divorced. Williams subsequently married his son's nanny.

How intriguing! I enjoyed this one so much I was genuinely disappointed when it ended. I could even picture the Duchess writing at her desk hoping this letter will say whatever necessary to bring her love back to her. Such a cold and seemingly heartless time for those that deserved the most respect, especially when labour was so risky back then. Absolutely scandalous turn of events for the Parisian’s and the conspiracy theory was the icing on the cake. I’ve got to say, the dukes explanation for having blood soaked clothing was ahead of its time. I’ve seen some use the most outlandish unbelievable excuses for this day and age! Thanks for that Brief Case!
@ fiction imitates reality and a lot of time the truth is far more wild and interesting and full of drama than fiction is. Fiction and reality are very much intertwined.
Mrs. Arthur Morgan I think you’ll find you couldn’t know my intentions because you’re not a mind reader. You read my comment and interpreted it as fiction based on assumption. I find history fascinating as well the thought processes of psychopaths. Mainly because I’m a human being with a conscience and cannot fathom taking a life or cheating someone out of something for my own gain. There’s a saying, to ASSUME is to make an ASS of U not ME
This dude sounds like a keeper don't he?! Geees... Gets his wife preg. 10 times by the time she's 32 but oh I don't love you anymore, I want the young one now... Poor lady, too bad she's the one that ends up hurt in this mess.
I feel so sorry for the children. Society's treatment of the duchess would have been nothing to the stigma that was attached to the children. The boys would have been well educated, and could have taken up occupations where they could have established themselves, but the girls, even with large dowries, would have been 'tainted by bad blood'. Their marriage prospects would have been limited to men desperate for money.
It appears to me that, while Francoise was grovelling to him to rekindle their love, he was no doubt exasperated by her pleadings but relished being the one in control. However, when she finally faced reality and stood up for herself by threatening divorce, he saw that he was no longer in control. When dealing with a controlling narcissist spouse/partner, the most dangerous time is when you break free. She now had the power to ruin his political career with a divorce. He couldn't stand the fact that she had turned the tables on him. The brutality of the murder indicates out of control rage.
That poor woman, others have said it, but all she wanted was to be loved by her husband. I'm sure a lot of people can relate to that. The sad part to me, is that she seemed like a beautiful woman.
Mismatched couple. I've read about these two and it appears she was hyper-emotional and hysterical. Obviously they grew apart but he stayed as her family had the money. I wished he divorced or separated. Self-centered man. Unfortunate the brilliant but illegitimate orphan governess Ms. Deluzzy got mixed up in this mess. She went on to live a respectable married life in the US worthy of such an exceptional woman. Excellent fictional novel by her descendant called "All This and Heaven Too" which I read many times.
A very sad story for the duchess. For myself however, I’m always thrilled to see a new video has come out. I absolutely love the historical stories which are always beautifully delivered.
Enjoy your videos very much!

The woman is now older, body changes and husband either dumps them in the country area and have affairs or do what this guy did. They usually have some low life do them in or making it look like an accident.
Sadly, the phrase "broodmare" comes to mind.
I’m this day and age, it would be pretty easy to determine wether or not there are any descendants of the duke in Nicaragua
The scandal helped bring down the monarchy because it focused on the decadence of the aristocracy and the favored treatment of the nobility.
Wow another crime of passion I'm of the belief the servent was innocent and I'm glad things worked out for her here in the states. As for the duke it would suck to know he escaped justice and even fathered more children.
Ronald Cohen (covered by Brief Case) used a similar defense in 1950's Australia. His lawyers claimed he was delusional.
It was South Africa
@@BriefCaseOfficial Sorry. I beg your pardon.
Pride takes another fall :)
"Pride goeth before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall". I'm not a believer in god, but that is one of my favourite quotes!
That poor woman. All she wanted was to be loved by her husband.
I can see how she felt like her union was so precious. At a time when loveless weddings arranged by interest among the elite were common, she regarded herself as one of the luckiest. She tried to grip unto it with the energy of despair, but unfortunately her feverish devotion wasn't reciprocal.
@Subhuman Trash
You can't control whether you fall out in love, unfortunately. It takes the bitter acceptance of the impermanence of things, to live happier. For that lady, it was just too difficult to still live under the same roof with an estranged one she still loved...
And you now know that as a FACT, right?

A terrific movie. Loved the book too. Written by Henriette's great niece.
Ohhh!! I'm definitely going to look for this movie!! Thank you for the info!! ☺😎🤩
Being murdered by the man that she so desperately loved is really sad and tragic, poor woman - great video as always!
I think this is one of the saddest stories yet ! 😔
@@kathypappas6867 The Duchess' love was more like an obsession. She wrote hundreds of letters to her husband to him even when he was under the same roof.
Painfully dad. She did everything for him, loved him, gave him children and tried to be everything he wanted but he murdered her, so tragic.
He was good at "fathering children"...what a pig.
My Auntie said, "Any man can be a father. It takes a Special Man to be Daddy!"🌞🌞🌞
I can be your daddy!
Like that take skill
So heartbreaking. She loved her husband dearly and he lost interest because of her weight gain and looks
Even though she bore him 10 children, he turned away from her to a younger pretty woman.
@@Orphen42O Yes, Prince Albert also died at a rather young age (42)

Really appreciate all the time & effort that Brief Case puts in to these videos! 💙
I love when you do these cases where the person you name in the title is the victim, coz I was sure we are gonna learn how Henriette was murdered by Françoise, but no PLOT TWIST! Poor Duchesse though, she never really got justice, her husband was a cruel narcissistic man 😢
She was insanely jealous of Henriette. She would have resented any woman her husband paid attention to .
Not to mention he was shallow AF
Yes, you do, and why a woman would hire a hottie, who is also very poor, and invite her into her house to play the role of wife and mother.....
The phrase "wrong end of the stick" refers to a misunderstanding. Saying the Duchess got the wrong end of the stick means, she misunderstood the situation. I think you meant to say she "drew the short straw" which refers to bad luck, or an unfortunate situation.
@@lazyhomebody1356 Think of the many celebrities who have had affairs with their nanny, au pair or housekeeper. Several divorces have resulted.

I gotta give you props mate, I can barely pronounce English names let alone some of the tongue twisters you talk about 😂 🤣 thanks for all your hard work and keep em coming 👍

Don't think I've ever been this early before... so stay safe out there!
This shows you can love somebody and give them all of you and you can still get rejected by them in the worse way
So it seems the media's ability to sway public opinion knows no boundaries when it comes to time period or place.
This dude sounds like a keeper don't he?! Geees... Gets his wife preg. 10 times by the time she's 32 but oh I don't love you anymore, I want the young one now... Poor lady, too bad she's the one that ends up hurt in this mess.
There's a Betty Davis Movie Called " All This and Heaven Too" about this story! If you are into old movies, check it out, it's a good flick!
I feel so sorry for the children. Society's treatment of the duchess would have been nothing to the stigma that was attached to the children. The boys would have been well educated, and could have taken up occupations where they could have established themselves, but the girls, even with large dowries, would have been 'tainted by bad blood'. Their marriage prospects would have been limited to men desperate for money.
in the past the appearance were all, you remained married with a person that you didn't love, it's like being separated at home
Life is to short! Who wants to live with someone who despises you? Very sad
That poor lady 😞
Coffee in history one of the best ways to wake up... beautifully narrated amazing content..👍🏼
This was such a pathetically transparent crime that I have to wonder if he wanted to get caught.
11:28 So he was just like any other king from any other country of those times...and exactly like old Versailles kings....so much for revolution.
Thoroughly enjoyed this as usual. Keep up the good work! Hello to all from Matamata, New Zealand.

That poor woman, others have said it, but all she wanted was to be loved by her husband. I'm sure a lot of people can relate to that. The sad part to me, is that she seemed like a beautiful woman.

It doesn't seem likely that Henriette was in any way involved with the Duchess's murder so I am glad her life turned out well.
Never been this early. Good listen whilst having breakfast!
I believe he and the nanny had an affair. But I wonder if he did fake his death since people claimed they were his decendents.
I didn't know there was a book! I look forward to reading it, if I can dig it up
Way to demonize the victim. He loved her when they married. If she was hyper emotional, it might be connected to his horrible treatment of her.
