  • Found out I had no rear brake pads--glad I'm not dead. Cleaned up and rebuilt the front calipers. Disassembled and cleaned the rears with new seals on order. Cleaned and rebuilt the front master cylinder.
All parts are Brakecrafters. I figured I'd give these a shot. I didn't remount the calipers and pressurize the front brake system yet because the forks are coming off for a fluid change.
For a more in-depth and clear instruction on an SV650 caliper rebuild, I'd recommend checking out this guy's video: • SV650 front brake cali...

4:00 if you leave the brake line connected, and put a piece of wood in the caliper where usually the brake pads are, you can just pump out the pistons using the brake lever. They'll extend almost completely. Pull away the wood and you can wiggle out the pistons extra easily.

This is generally what I've been doing as of recently. I usually try to leave a piece of wood between the pads any time I pull the calipers off the bike now because my dumbass will forget and still pulling/pushing the lever and closing the pads together when the caliper is off the bike, lol.

Thanks Brandon. I just edit out all the hours where I'm on the couch sitting, drinking beer, and watching Top Gear reruns, haha.

I got plastic picks for gun cleaning and use them for the likes of this; they will get the rubber seals out without damaging them or the housings.
Also, you can pop the piston out with a compressor if you have one available.

I should definitely get a set of plastic picks, good call.
I've never used an air compressor to get the pistons out because I wasn't sure how you'd connect the air to the caliper body. Just watched a video though with a small battery powered air compressor, and it looks super simple though. I'm sure I'll need to do that at some point in my life now that I see how simple it is. Works a hell of a lot better than hooking up a grease gun like me the first time I ran into a stuck piston!

@@matttriestodothings to be honest, I just put the nozzle on/in the bore for the brake line and it's been fine, don't need to be too precious.
If you find one is moving and the other isn't you can clamp the free one in place and it will force the tight one to move instead 👍
