To be clear, the maple barrel finish is not Maple wood (which would have been great) but rather “French Oak staves (first finish) that were steeped in a patented process of pressure, oxygen, time and temperature with maple syrup (second finish).” So, the whiskey is nope being imparted with the complexities of maple wood, but rather syrup-soaked oak which I would think leaves a much-simpler profile of sugary sweetness. One of my favorite finished bourbons was actually Woodford Reserve Master’s Collection Maple Wood Finish Bourbon from around 2011 or so. This was a bourbon with no simple sweetness but rather a nicely complex whiskey that benefitted from the Maple wood finishing. I wish more distillers would experiment with maple wood (not syrup) finishing.

The amburana finish has a great nose.
Also, they aren't finishing in different barrels, they are using staves in the barrels.

Just picked up a bottle of the bourbon on a business trip to Denver (not available in Maine or New Hampshire). Very good - and worth the price. And I like that rectangular bottle design.

Thank you for trying all of these together! I just got the Amburana and agree 100% that is has a cinnamon apple spice / cinnamon toast crunch without over-powering the bourbon. To me the Amburana has a winter holiday vibe without being sickly sweet. I paid $70 and am not disappointed. I honestly would like to see it closer to $50, as there are many great choices in the $60-70 price-range. I agree with Kurt that I do like it a lot. Yet, I also agree with Trenton's "dusty" note - not a deal-breaker; but I could do without it.

I met some great people working at the giftshop & tasting room. Their located in the Distillery District in Lexington. You can see how they are doing the finishing process. Nothing like Makers 46 w/ the stave stuck in the barrels.
It worth a stop to try the full product line & other things they've got going on.

Yep. I can get Rare Breed for $55 and 1920 for $50.......might need to be $45 or less for me to "give it a try"... Unless Kurt and Trenton says its the bees knees. My palate lines up pretty close with Kurts on Bourbons. So......We'll see what the vid says at the end.

I agree 100%. I always enjoy watching reviews of new bourbons but so many bottles cheaper, in that price range and slightly above that are absolute slam dunks. $60 worth it or not I’m really not interested unless there’s a ton of hype around it.

I have tried all of these at stores in KY. I also preferred the Straight bourbon. However, they also have a release that is called Old Wm. Tarr Manchester Reserve that I thought was amazing. It is an 8 year old rye blended with a 7 year old bourbon. RD1 is also partially owned by Mark Stoops, the University of Kentucky head football coach.

I bought the Amburana from Bee Liquors back at the beginning of September for $65, can confirm that was the price at least a few weeks ago. We also have the cigar batch from Starlight. I think a line up of those, plus the Barrell, Nulu, and ASW amburana offerings could be interesting.

A manager at Pub 99 in New England was asked about all of their flavorings spirits whiskeys ,scotches all of it ! He said the larger orders are made ahead according to PUB 99 recipes! They actually have their own employees who sample to approve the product, the bottles you design and pick, the labels are your choice. Their bourbon are good!

But it’s neat to compare similar finishes across distilleries. Wonder if any one distillery finishes better than others….

I have been using the Trent system of tasting that includes the FROTHER. I pour my bourbon, scotch or red wine of choice sample the pour then Froth everything so far has a very different flavor in most cases a better smoother flavor! I opened a 2004 Cabernet over the weekend with friends and did the flavor test with them. This particular CAB started at about 89-91 rating first and second taste, Frothed for about 10-12 seconds let the bubbles in the wine dissipate! The overall rating of the wine after Frothing 95-96 it was incredibly good! Thanks for the share Trent!!

Maybe now's tine to get the wife to make occasional appearances in front of the camera.....just sayn.....cheers!

Due to the sweetness of the maple/oak expression, I would have lined that up 3rd, rather than the French Oak. I think the qualities of the French Oak would tend to be lost after drinking a more sweet-forward expression. Other than that, I’ll be looking for these to sample to see if I enjoy them for purchase. They sound strong.

Am curious if you have ever tried Whiskey Acres Artisan Series - Maple Syrup Casks Finished out of DeKalb, Illinois and what did you think?
I've been watching the channel for about a year heard you both rave of Decadence. I finally found a bottle about 2 months ago in Champaign, IL. I had previously seen and bought the Whiskey Acres bottle. And to me, Whiskey Acres blows Decadence away. For me it's about the proof. Decadence at 90 versus Acres at 115.6, that extra proof really heightens that maple flavor and overall taste of the bourbon. But I'm like Trenton and gravitate towards more proof. So curious if you've had it?

I agree with Trenton on the amburana finished bourbons. I love a small pour, but that's it. And I don't like the way it lingers on my tongue and even in my nose. I feel like I'm tasting/smelling it all day! It's definitely a love-hate thing with me.

I've only tried one Amburana finish and I couldn't drink it. As often as I go to Lexington, I might have to visit RD1. I'd be checking out the straight bourbon and the French Oak finish. The other two probably aren't for me.

@@Robert.Sheard I'd like to try the maple finish.

@@hollyjhj3732 I'd be worried it was too sweet, but Kurt seemed to love it. I haven't had pecan pie in a lot of years, but that might be good. I noticed they also have one of their original higher proof bottles still available in their online store. But I'm gonna behave (for now).

I have the maple and it’s undrinkable for me. Never again!!

RD1 hasn't made it to the Chicagoland area yet. Binny's doesn't have it. I do have their Amburana finish that I bought from Liquor Barn. IMHO, it's just OK.

For $60 dollars you are competing with some heavy hitters. I can get Knob Creek 12 and Old Forester 120 and some others for around that price .That’s a high bar in my book to cover.

Enjoyable video. The maple finish sounds good to me as I love pecan pie and pancakes. I agree with others that it would be easier to sell these if the price was a bit lower. Hard to take a $60+ plunge on something new. I could see $50 being more acceptable for a more average consumer.
Great discussions about cereal, pimples, etc., that keep us coming back for more. 😅

If you contract out your own mashbill, wouldn't you use a 'Distilled For and Bottled By' labeling? I'm not sure if there are any regulations surrounding that.

I have been drinking the green label rd1 for a while now it confused me of the flavor what I will usually do is take a half a shot or so leave it in a shot glass overnight and then look at it and taste it it kind of gives me a hint of the backside when I did this to this bottle it turned a nasty brownish apple cider looking color smelled good tasted horrible this was the only bottle that I have ever had that happen in my 30 years of collecting I just think being able to take it to Kentucky let it sit for one year and call it Kentucky bourbon is a little strange
