  • I read The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes because, well I had to. Ages ago I read the entire Hunger Games trilogy so I would know everything before I watched the DVD release of The Hunger Games, which of course meant I needed to read this prequel before I saw the movie. I share my thoughts and the very distinct differences between the book and the movie.

    I saw this movie with my sister, and she enjoyed the movie much more than I did. I read the book, but she didn’t. Like you, the first thing I thought after watching the movie was that I wished I had watched the movie first. It wasn’t a bad movie, and I always expect major changes in movie adaptations of a book. What I don’t expect is for scriptwriters to sacrifice the integrity of the book for a movie. Coriolanus was much more sinister in the books right from the beginning. By the end of the book, when he cries for Sejanus, his “friend,” Coriolanus seems a lot more human in the movie than he does in the book. I mean, in the book he cries for Sejanus AND himself for five minutes, and then he literally steals Sejanus’s money.
    Also, the people who worked on the movie front loaded some things that didn’t necessarily improve on the story (like the Plinth prize and his conversation with Dean Highbottom).
    The changes in the movie changed some of the meaning of the book.

      Exactly! Like I get making changes for an adaptation I do, but it felt like so much of it was done to make him look better or more humane, when he was always thinking of himself. I do think if I saw the movie and then read it I would have had different thoughts, but reading it first really took away from being able to just enjoy the movie for what it was

      Well said, I should have read your comment before posting my own. My main issue with the movie was that they humanized Snow. The non-readers who I saw the movie with, they were a little suspicious of Lucy Grey after winning the games. Can you believe that? It wasn't until the end with what happened to Sejanus, they realize, oh he's pure evil.

    Snow is Sejanus’ best friend, but Sejanus is definitely not Snow’s best friend!

    So glad I’ve found your video, I needed to see that someone noticed the same differences as me ! I went to see it with my sister, she hasn’t read the book yet and loved it, but I’ve read the book and while watching it I couldn’t help being annoyed by the changes 😩 I think like you « the Plinth prize » right at the beginning irritated me the most, that really wasn’t necessary so why bring that up when it was supposed to happen later on and for a reason !😭 I kinda regret reading the book first now 😅

      @@kleffgoeverafter Same ! I wanted to know what it was about before watching the film, but now I’m thinking I could’ve waited a bit longer 🤣 They changed so much details that had their importance, and chose to totally next other important scenes like the hospital ones.
      I think what’s really missing the most in the film is the inner voice of Snow, because in the book we are inside his mind we can see that he always was selfish and found the districts people barbaric, but the film totally missed this aspect of him, I don’t think it was well translated

      @kleffnotes my biggest complaint about all the changes was not seeing how Capitol citizens, including the mentors, were mostly against the hunger games. Even Snow disagreed with the hunger games, not out of compassion for the districts, but he still didn't like the games.

    • @kleffgoeverafter
      @kleffgoeverafter  8 месяцев назад +2

      @@MoonStone_Empress Yes! I felt like they made it seem so accepted, when this one was sort of the push to get people to actually even watch it. I just wish they had maybe spent less time on the romance and more on like people in the Capitol. I was hoping for more of Sejanus and how his Ma was trying to help. I wanted that sandwich scene so badly and it got so changed

    • @MoonStone_Empress
      @MoonStone_Empress 8 месяцев назад +1

      @kleffnotes I loved that scene. I love Ma in general. The characters, even the small and seemingly insignificant ones were the backbone of the story to me. It showed the contrast between the beginning and where the story eventually ends with Katniss. It's still so weird to think that the Capitol people were once kind of normal. Well, as normal as rich elitists can be, but normal compared to what we see later. Obviously some resisted the indoctrination that Snow was imposing on them, but the evolution over just a couple of generations is interesting to think about. You just don't get that depth in the movie.

    I read the book 3 years ago, yet could not finish the story after Snow became a Peacekeeper. It's such an odd choice to make Snow the protagonist of a prequel. I wish the story was told from Lucy Grey's perspective or even Tigris' perspective. Seriously, the movie made me uncomfortable because there seemed to be more sympathy toward the villain; only the reader knew we were watching a mad man's unrevealing. I'm glad they cut some of the immoral and graphic scenes out in the movie since it's one thing to read it, but another to see it. I think that's why they switched out Wovey for Dill when it came to drinking the poison. I will admit the movie was well shot, and so much better than both Mocking Jay movies in my opinion. I'm glad they stuck with the creative decision make just one movie, but I did wish we saw more of the mentors interacting with the tributes. I think the movie would have been better for me if we can hear Snow's internal monologue so the non-readers can see his true nature, and feel more uneasy when Sejanus and Lucy Grey confided in him.
