I was referring to his CD with Rostropivich conducting. Here with Valery Gergiev he is totally inspired and much more expressive than Hough or Argerich.I believe this is one of the greatest Rach 3rds I have ever heard. His 1st movement cadenza is in a class by itself, and this 2nd movement I have never heard played better..

I love Pletnev's pianism.. He is a not-so-talked-about hero.. And I've listened to the Byron Janis version of the Rach3.. Phenomenal it is.. He even modifies passages to play them his own way.. And I heard his Rach2 too.. Fantastic.. Extremely fresh interpretation.. I urge you to hear it, if you already haven't..

I will definitely look for it.I quite buying CDs for a year after I was unable to find a CD with Volodos playing Rachmaninoffs 2nd Concerto, but then I heard Lugansky play the Moments Musicaux opus 16 and Preludes opus 23,and I began buying again.I love Luganskys Etudes Tableaux opus 33 & opus 39.Thank you for the info.

I just listened to the Volodos/Pletnev performance and I believe Pletnev here with Valery Gergiev has more feeling and a deeper understanding of this Concerto.Actually this is absolutely one of the greatest Rach 3rds I've ever heard and I own 18 recordings of it.Please include the last movement.Thank you.

The above comment applies to Pletnevs recording with Rostropovich conducting. This current performance with Valery Gergiev is stunning and second to no one.I only wish it were on a DVD or CD.

Yes I have several copies of byron Janis on both the Rach 2 & 3 Concertos. His Rachmaninoff Concerto no. 1 with either Reiner or Kondrashin is transcendental pianism at its finest.Unfortunately Reiner leaves out the triangle in the last movement, the triangle is supposed to keep the beat while the piano plays "Staccatissimo"a really stunning effect. you can hear it with Ormandy and the composer.

I really love this performance by Pletnev/Gergiev of the Rach 3.I believe Pletnevs understanding of this music exceeds Volodos by a mile, yet both are geniuses. Please hear Byron Janis who studied under Horowitz for 10 years, yet in my opinion plays it better than Horowitz himself.Unfortunately there are cuts in the 2nd & 3rd mvmnts however.

I am almost afraid to mention Lang Lang but have you seen him at the Verbier festival in 2009 with Yuri Tumerkanov conducting the 3rd movenent from Tchaikovsky's 1st piano Concerto? I kid you not, he plays it as well as Horowitz/Toscanini from the famous broadcast in 1948.Pletnevs feeling in this 2nd movement is totally awesome better than Volodos.

Such a beautiful second movement. It's a little unfortunate the third movement is a little messy unexpected of Pletnev.

I agree that the recording with Rastropovich is surprisingly unappealing( I expected a masterpiece
    This one is really unique

The reason why more people to not acknowledge Pletnev's uncanny 6th sense transcendental musical abilitites is probably because he has no recordings that are employing 32 digital bit technology.Unfortunately most people according to the reviews I have seen on amazon.com, are more concerned about sound than performance.

Volodos & Pletnev? Thats almost like Rachmaninoff conducting and Horowitz at the piano. No, I was not aware of that combination, but it really makes me sick when these supremely gifted once in a lifetime artists are not on DVD or CD.Volodos plays Rachmaninoffs 2nd Concerto better than anyone yet it isnt even available on CD.I have given up waiting for Horowitz 1968 TV Concert to be released on DVD.

Pletnev is a genius but not on this piece.Rachmaninoff carefully edited all of his Concertos and piano compositions and the liberties taken by Pletnev in the tempos and phrasing are contrary to the Concertos meaning which is so evident with pianists like Argerich, Luganski and especially Stephan Hough. On the 1st Concerto and Rhapsody however, Pletnev is incomparable.

Please.. No Lang Lang.. He is just pseudo-emotionalist.. There isn't half as much expression in his music as in his face..
