Students demanding the immediate arrest of former president Chun
Doo-hwan clashed violently with riot police outside Seoul's Yonsei
University on Monday (27/11). Tear gas was fired by the police. They said some 500 students poured out of a main gate of the campus trying to march on the suburban residence of Chun, whom they blame as one of
the masterminds of the 1980 Kwangju civilian uprising. Several
    students were injured.

Thank you for uploading this video. I had seen moments of this protest, but not from this particular video, on World's Wildest Police Videos. But just from the fact that the protesters were students, I assumed the protest was about problems perhaps only college students were facing, like costs had risen to unaffordable. Since a protest for something even that minor would be at the mayor, state etc governor, or the prime minister and that means a demand of political change. But this protest is more exciting, since it's actually against then-leader, Chun Doo-Hwan.

The reason why most of protesters were men is because it was considered to be held under a violent and dangerous circumstance. Men willfully joined the riot and asked women to stay at home. Women students also protested but they were encouraged to stay in the back. Old women made food and delivered the supplies to men and cheered for them before they went on the journey. They took care of their families and even families of others who needed some household help. South Korea should feel proud of their democratic changes in their history.

I will talk you through it. But This is going to be a long read. So brew some coffee, preferably be ready to put this into TTS reader, and have a seat.
The video shows university students and families of May 18 massacre victims protesting the amnesty given to the former "president" general Jeon Doohwan. Quote because he became one by staging a military coup as a general and by taking over the country. Jeon WAS a traitorous rebel and should have been shpt by firing squad.
      Background.
Jeon seized power after his predecessor Park Junghee(also former military general who ruled the country for 19 years before death) was assassinated by his own intelligence chief, director of KCIA Kim Jaegyu in October 1979.
Kim, once loyal to Park, believed Park's regime was an affront to democracy and that Park was becoming unhinged dictator who were willing to masscre millions to maintain power. Especially after Park arrested Kim Young-sam, an opposition leader representing southeastern region of S Korea, citizens of the SE region burst out into mass protest now known as Bu-Ma Resistance movement(부마항쟁) of 1979. We will talk about this later.
Park was nervous, and wanted to use military to brutally crack down on the protests. Kim Jaegyu, after being constantly sidelined by Park's own personal security chief Cha Jeecheol, was enraged by hearing Cha say: "we should do it like Cambodia. They killed millions. We can do a couple 100 thousand no sweat. Use tanks to (youtube censorship) them" to Park, and eventually pulled the trigger.
But after doing it, Kim somehow went to military headquarters instead of his own KCIA HQ, and was arrested on charges of high treason, plus obviously offing the president.
Jeon Doohwan, who was chief of military intelligence(unlike UK this org was and is led by military, not by James Bonds) at the time, saw the opportunity where military leadership was torn apart, as Chief of Staff Gen. Jung Sunghwa was also present at the scene of assassination of Park, and KCIA was obviously in pieces because their head was arrested for doing the president. Military intelligence had unchallenged power to do anything now.
Jeon plotted to take over Seoul government who was then being led by acting President Choi Gyu-ha, and he did so by gathering his conspirators mainly composed of secret society of army generals and officers, called "Hana-hue(Hana Club. This was made by Park Junghee.)", which Jeon was also a part of. That also included commanding general of couple of special forces paratrooper brigades guarding the DMZ. This part about special forces will become important later.
Jeon's coup took place in December 12 or 1979. Some resistance from government forces were there, but the Hanahue rebels were eventually victorious, because after some skirmishes, the two sides made a gentlemen's agreement to not spill blood in capital Seoul while North Korea was watching. And the rebels simply ignored it.
Afterwards, the rebel junta generals and officers started first by purging the army of the anti-coup, or rather non-Hanaclub members from their posts, and then started taking over government positions. This was called the neo-junta, because Park Junghee also seized power by military coup in 1961 as a major general like Jeon himself, and Park was the original junta. Anyway, they pressured acting president Choi gyuha to resign in Aug 1980, but before that, a major event that shook the country took place.
You see, before 1979 assassination, people of South Korea have been living under military dictatorship of Park Junghee for 19 years. They have witnessed how ruthless KCIA torturing was, and how brutal the regime was in silencing any of their opponents. Nepotism and corruption was running wild, and favoring of southeastern region of the peninsula drove the southwestern part of the country out of mainstream politics. They are called Gyeongnam(Southeast) and Honam(Southwest) respectively but i will call them SE and SW for brevity.
This discrimination was deliberately done by Park's junta to sow division among the populace, especially to keep the two sides coming together. One of the prominent political leaders representing the SW was Kim Daejung. He already survived kidnap and assassination attempt by Park's KCIA(which US's original CIA had to intervene to stop the KCIA from doing the deed btw). After being tortured and falsely accused of being communist spy due to his activism for democracy, he became a symbol of Korean citizen's fight for freedom of speech and democracy, especially in the SW region.
Because of this, Kim Daejung was firmly on the radar and was an eyesore of the neo-junta led by Jeon Doohwan, who saw Kim as potential political opponent who could get in his way to power.
The students all over the country, especially in Seoul were already protesting Jeon's coup from march 1980, seeing his coup as an attempt to seize power by abusing the military again.
Meanwhile, diplomatic attempts were being made by US government to persuade Kim Daejung and another prominent opposition leader and defacto godfather of SE region Kim Young-sam(I mentioned him above) to tell the students to back down before the neo-junta loses it and causes mass bloodshed.
Regardless, Jeon's junta was already gearing up for countrywide martial law, and was spreading fake rumors that the protest was being controlled and stoked by North Korean spies. Major crackdown of student protests looked imminent. Kim Daejung partly obliged and tried to publish his statement telling the students to be peaceful, but Jeon's junta censored it, and students wasnt going to back down either.
Beginning of May 1980 saw the biggest anti-military junta demonstrations in Korean history. Hundreds of thousands of students and some ordinary citizens gathered in front of Seoul main station and called for Jeon's junta to go back to military and keep their hands off of civilian matters, and withdraw his martial law.
Neo-junta was ready to send every combat units available, and even artillery units to use deadly force against the protestors. The students got wind of the crackdown, and believing violence could harm their chance of achieving real democracy by way of being an excuse for the junta to impose military rule, they decide to retreat on the eve of May 15.
Of course, the neo-junta never intended of reaching peaceful negotiations or handing of power whatsoever. On 17 May 1980 they preemtively arrested Kim Daejung and every other political enemies and targets, imposing nationwide martial law.
This was a calculated move, because the neojunta also did not want mass bloodshed in the heart of the country Seoul. They wanted an excuse to say the country is unstable, show force, and shut the people's mouths up by their military might. Arresting Kim Daejung was key.
On the night of 17 May, Jeon's special forces paratrooper units were already on their way to the capital city of Korean SW, Gwangju. They established posts in the universities, brutally beating and kicking out anybody inside.
      TB Continued below ->

Apparently ytube overlords want to censor me for speaking truth about what Jeon did in Gwangju, tbh it is pretty gnarly and is crimes against humanity, if you want refer to my other reply to another comment asking why they are doing it.
In short: his special forces units unlived many ordinary citizens in Gwangju without being provoked, and helped him gain power.
And Jeon was sentenced to death for inciting a rebellion using army but acquitted two years later. He was never jailed again.

@@sowmyapriya9216 if you still care, this was to protest the amnesty given to the former "president" general Jeon Doohwan. Quote because he became one by staging a military coup as a general and by taking over the country. Jeon WAS a traitorous rebel and should have been shpt by firing squad.
This is going to be a long read. So brew some coffee, preferably be ready to put this into TTS reader, and have a seat.
Jeon plotted to take over Seoul government who was then being led by acting President Choi Gyu-ha, and he did by sending him and his conspirators of secret society of army generals and officers called "Hana-hue(Hana Club. This was made by Park Junghee.)" That including commanding general of couple of special forces brigades guarding the DMZ.

      @@sowmyapriya9216
Continued from above. Hope this doesnt get censored.
May 18, 1980, college students of Gwangju started protesting the arrest of Kim Daejung and demanded cancellation of martial law and stepping down of traitorous rebel general Jeon Doohwan. They demanded their colleges doors opened.
Immediately, Special Forces units were sicked on them. They were savagely beaten with long batons and arrested. Some students, surprised by aggressive crackdowns, started to grab pebbles and stones and throwing them at the paratroopers, but they were quickly chased away.
SF Paratrooper units also marched into Gwangju city center, main station, and major chokepoints. What they did was to start grabbing and beating people at random. Protestors, non protestors, there were no distinctions made. People were stomped on, bayonetted and heads cracked open by batons.
Paras ran into alleys and grabbed every pedestrians they saw, kicked their heads against the wall and dragged them onto trucks, stripped down to their underwears. When there were no people on the streets, paratroopers ran into random buildings and houses, grabbed whoever were inside, beat them to pulp and arrested them. If there were women, their clothes were torn off and they were violated. Live ammunitions were used against unarmed people in multiple occasions.
The inital violence was so terrible that even a commander of supporting unit who participated in Gwangju massacre expressed concerns as it was happening. But the paratroopers did not stop. They terrorized the population, used flamethrowers for intimidation and lethal purposes.
But this brutality had the opposite effect as the citizens of Gwangju were so enraged by the callousness of the Para's violence they actually started fighting back. It was stones and bricks at first, but the city's bus and cab drivers started organizing and formed a makeshift convoy to barricade the advance of SF paras.
But by the night of 20 May, the paras were shooting M16s into the crowd.
First mass shooting was reported at Gwangju main station, May 20 at the order of 3rd parachutist brigade commander Choi Sechang. At least five citizens were killed.
Next day, angry citizens who saw death and injuries of their friends and families marched towards the paras stationed in front of regional government headquarters building.
The protest was fierce, and at some point, a molotov cocktail was thrown at Para's APCs. While reversing back, a paratrooper was crushed to death under APC's track. Citizens also managed to commandeer police armored car and slowly advanced towards the Paras. A bus also advanced toward the Para ranks, but was stopped by volley of fire from Para's M16s.
At exactly noon, during the observing of the national anthem, Paratroopers stationed on nearby buildings and on the ground all opened fire on every citizens they saw on the road. .50 caliber machine guns, M16s, all weapons were free.
People trying to save the wounded were shot dead by snipers. Some young students ran out in defiance holding national flag singing the anthem. They were also shot by snipers. At least dozens were dead on the spot, and hundreds were severely wounded. Junta forces sprayed machine gun fire from helicopters into buildings. It was a massacre.
The following days saw citizens of Gwangju arming themselves with ancient weapons such as M1 Garand and M1 carbines, comandeered from local police posts and reservist unit armories, and having small skirmishes all around Gwangju against the Paras and Army support units. This is a story for another day with unspeakable brutality and numerous unprovoked shootings of unarmed civilains being committed by junta forces across the broader SW Jeonnam province.
But it is enough to explain how Jeon Doohwan and his neo-junta managed to use this citizen's righteous resistance against illegal violence of rebel troops, to brand them as communist uprising, silence the press, and justify his ironfisted ruling of the whole country. Gwangju's resistance was eventually crushed mercilessly using tanks, machine guns, grenades, and flamethrowers.
Kim Daejung was named as the mastermind who incited the May Gwangju uprising and was sentenced to death, even though he was arrested before the first protest of May 18 was even started. For the second time, international outcry and vetoeing by non other than Reagan himself(if Reagan says what you're doing is effed up, YOU ARE EFFED UP) and the CIA spared Kim's life from early grave.
Within less than a year of his initial coup, on August 27, 1980, Jeon Doohwan became the 11th president of Republic of Korea. The 5th Republic began.
His self appointed presidency which lasted from 1980 to 1988 was marred with corruption even worse than Park Junghee's junta, violent military style ruling imposed on every facets of the society, kidnappings and tortures, manufactured spies scandals by new KCIA - now named ANSP, which also rigged elections and spied on any potential opponents.
After 1987's yet another mass protest that preceded the 1988 Seoul olympics, now known as June 10 Democratization Movement, Jeon Doohwan stepped down.
Jeon Doohwan was arrested in 1995 with his Hana Club buddy and fellow coup conspirator and now former president(jfc) Roh Taewoo, on charge of corruption, mass murdering of cilvilians in Gwangju, so on and so forth. The president then was Kim Young-sam, the first non-military president South Korea has seen since 1960. Young-sam had a bone to pick with Jeon, as he remained under house arrest for most of Jeon's regime.
On august 1995, Jeon was sentenced to death for planning and executing a military insurrection against Korea but was reduced to life imprisonment on December of the same year.
December 22 1997, Jeon was acquited and was free from prison, on agreement by both Kim Daejung, then new president elect, and Kim Young-sam who was outgoing. The reason given was to "reunite the divided country in this trying times." South Korea was going through major economic recession, and former opposition leaders Kim Daejung and Kim Youngsam needed some ammunition to fight against the conservative presidential candidates who promised the amnesty of Jeon and Roh once they were elected as presidents. The rotten core of the country was still festering, and there was little they could do politically.
After everything he has done, every person he ordered killed, every innocent deaths he cause, every dollar of billions he embezzled, Jeon was able to walk free. The residence at the end of the above video is where Jeon comfortably lived in his retirement, at the heart of Seoul.
This is the story behind these angry protestors. These young men, who were born out of Jeong's dictatorship, angry at what they have learned about the monsterous government they were taught to respect and worship, are demanding justice.
Jeon would never spend a day behind bars again in his life. Many students and conscripted riot police were injured, but that only caused hate and divide among the population, one of which supported the police unconditionally because they were literally their sons and brothers, and the other who despised the tyrant being allowed to walk free and were very angry about this grave injustice. This student protest and "riots" did not go anywhere and died down gradually. Regular protest in front of Jeon's residence would take place but Jeon would be barely phased by it. His family will live in the riches, denying his wrongdoings and responsibility for what happened in Gwangju. Only his grandson had come to public to openly apologize for his family's evil doings. But after that, he was kept silent by the press who works with the people in the govenrment who benefitted from Jeon's rules.
So there it goes. Its not a fairytale ending. Opposite from it. But it is important that people knows.
