This song is a tribute to the drummer "The Rev" who had an incurable heart condition and passed away in 2009. He actually wrote a song called "Fiction" 3 days before he passed away, in the lyrics he wrote "promise me you'll never feel afraid" like a message for the rest of the band. Then, in this song "so far away", they said "sleep tight, i'm not afraid" in response to the lyrics The Rev wrote for them, their way of saying "its okay brother, rest in peace, we promise we're not going to feel afraid".

RIP to the Rev. A7X was one of my favorite bands up until he passed. Still love them, just hits different now and my music taste has evolved. Most of the tracks you should start with, with a couple exceptions, should be from the "Live in the LBC" concert dvd. As a military kid, you should absolutely do Gunslinger. But also check out Critical Acclaim, Scream, Beast and the Harlot, Bat Country, Almost Easy, and A Little Piece of Heaven all the live versions in the LBC. Also recommend Nightmare, Hail to the King, Afterlife, and Brompton Cocktail. Shit, just listen to their self-titled album and City of Evil all the way through. Peak A7X era in my opinion.
Edit: man I really miss listening to the Rev. Dude was such a massive talent, if he was alive today with an extra decade of touring experience, and the modern influence of some of the insane techniques today, he'd easily be my favorite drummer I think. He was so naturally gifted; I just remember the old webclip of him recording Almost Easy in one take. Sorry kind of reminiscing the old days for a moment.

Their name “avenged sevenfold” actually comes from the book of genesis where it’s says that a crime committed in revenge shall be avenged seven fold. A lot of their earlier music has heavy biblical influence that you would never notice without a deep dive into the lyrics

The bands name Avenged Sevenfold, abbreviated A7X comes from the bible:
    Genesis 4: 13-15
13: Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is more than I can bear.
14 :Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me."
15: But the LORD said to him, "Not so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.

This was more of a one off for them. Due to their drummer passing away, they dedicated the album that this song was on, to him. Usually they are quite a bit heavier than this. But no where near as heavy as Lorna Shore so I think you'll enjoy their stuff!

You got an amazing rabbit hole here with A7X. I will say there are some songs they have that have more emotion and feel to them if you watch the live versions. 2 live shows in particular that feature all of these songs are Live in the LBC 2008, and Live at Rock AM Ring 2011. The one in 2008 is "to me personally" their peak performance when The Rev was still with them "RIP". The 2011 show "again to me" was their peak for after they lost The Rev.

We went to their concert in 2011, 3 years after I lost my Mama, the concert was 4 days before her birthday and M. Shadows (Matt Sanders) dedicated it to all of those that had lost someone. I was bawling. They had a projection of that shot of The Rev (Jimmy Sullivan) hugging the guys behind the drum kit. 💔
They do have many many great songs, personally for me Little Piece of Heaven is not one I enjoy. Dear God, Seize The Day, Almost Easy, Bat Country, Buried Alive, Carry On (from Call of Duty) and so many more. . .. and while I do love the Live in the LBC version of Critical Acclaim there's some lyrics that aren't sung in the live that are in the Official Audio.
Syn always has crazy guitar solos, but Zacky and Johnny are right there with him in the rhythm guitar and bass. The Rev was an awesome drummer, and I am glad they asked Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater to play their Welcome To The Family (another great song on the Nightmare album) Tour because Jimmy was a fan of Mike. 🤘
I don't know what their religious beliefs are (nor do I care) but Avenged Sevenfold is from the OT of the bible. I do remember that from an interview.

You should listen to Bad Wolves - "Remember When", it's in the same vein, but not a happy song. It's metal, but has a totally different hip hop vibe since it's mostly about the then lead singer Tommy Vext growing up as a black kid in Brooklyn and nearly being murdered by his twin brother who is currently serving time in prison for it.

A lot of their music is harder than this one so I would think that's why this one had so much more reach bc the harder stuff turns people away immediately if they don't like it like that. I didn't read all the comments but to answer your question about what Avenged Sevenfold means...it was taken from scripture as follows:
    Genesis 4:24
24 If Cain's revenge is sevenfold, then Lamech's is seventy-sevenfold." 24 If someone who kills Cain is punished seven times, then the one who kills me will be punished seventy-seven times!” Basically, the New King James Version says - "If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.” The band makes several religious references in a few of their songs. For example, the song "The Beast and the Harlot" is a story about Babylon and its hedonistic ways. Please do that video too. Its visually stimulating.
This song was originally being written for the lead guitarists grandmother's who had passed away. The entire album began while The Rev was still alive. But by the end when things were winding down and Jimmy passed what would be the final added song to Matt (lead singer) the Rev would die 3 days later and with that, Fiction, sung by Jimmy and So Far Away - re-written for Jimmy - would be added to the album and finally released in the year following Jimmy's death on 28 December 2009. The Nightmare album was released 23 July 2010. If you search, you can find demos that include Jimmy but no finalized recording. The drumming was done by Dream Theaters, Mike Portnoy. Fiction is not usually the song most people react to because if they did, they could see a message about not forgetting me when I'm gone and then the direct response in So Far Away. Jimmy sang Fiction and they added Matt's singing for the final copy to be added to the album. If you watch the Nightmare video, you will see reference to Jimmy as well. His drum set appears at the end and some of the references are a response to some items found in the video for Afterlife. Both music videos were directed by Wayne Isham. A very good cinematographer. Loved the reaction. Hope you do more from this band.

And the Lord said he would avenge the death of Cain sevenfold to any who did him harm .. something like that.
My understanding is that both Iron Maiden and Metallica have requested that Avenged be their opening acts multiple times...
As an 80s Metalhead, I believe they carried that torch into the next generation 🤘🤘

Is it to soon to bring up 'A little piece of heaven'? This song, imo, is their most 'listenable' song for the masses which is why it is the most viewed but as a fan, and a fan of the genre, it is far from their best song! A good song to introduce you to them though I guess :)

Avenged sevenfold best songs are unholy confessions, bat country, the beast and the harlot... Also their guitarist has been ranked in the top 10 best guitarists in the world
