Hi Tony! This is the very first video I've watched on YT in which the tuner really explains what he's doing! You have my greatest respect for this! So inspiring! Thank you!
Thank you for your clear explanation Tony. I recently got a car painted Indonesian handpan made from the bottom of a Caltex barrel. The previous owner never had it re-tuned and didn't even know the scale it served more or less as decoration I guess. I discovered it must have been tuned in F Akebono originally. I stripped the paint off and after watching your video tried to tune it using Tune!it on my S10. It starts to sound decent enough to play a melody on it but it does need some fine tuning. To isolate the tone fields I used magnetic sheet that I cut to the size of the tone fields. It's my wish to build a handpan from scratch but this will take some investment in equipment of course. I am retiring in a couple of years and since the benefits for the retired in the Netherlands is getting worse and worse building handpans might be an option for me to get some additional income.
I'm ripping open my Sela Harmony SE201 next week and tuning it myself. Thank you for this. Good thing I got it used and super cheap-- very little to lose financially.
....Oh Geesh... I was fascinated watching you tune the pan...! ...Showing the travel of the vibrations for the oval shape... ...You were explaining the vibrational path of the earth's electromagnetic field...
it's remind me to javanish traditional musical instruments, called gamelan made from brass. it's played as percussive orchestra. they use clay for tuning (my grandpa told me) .. I dont have any idea why they use clay before watching your video.. now I can see the reason why... Nice video, thank you for sharing....
It's such a revolution to share a video tutorial on how to tune a handpan! It's so nice of you to upload it publicly! Awesome! But I really wonder why you say "active" instead of octave...
Hi Tony thanks for your videos I've enjoyed them and am inspired to make a handpan in the future. Could you please add links for purchasing the tuning rings and shells on ebay, I didn't have any luck finding them when I did a search.
Hey Tony! I hope to soon try my hand at a handpan, and your video is very educational, thank you! Do you have the circle of fifths card that you show at 16:15 in the digital format which you could share, if possible?
Hey man. Other question ? That. Is type o metal you use for the shells ? I mean that I nitriding the shell before tune it! hey thank you very much attentive follow your post greetings from Colombia and soon I start my building!
Hello, I'm from Brazil, I would like to learn how to do the hang drum, but I do not know the English language, so I ask you if it is possible to put subtitles in your videos, so that I and other people from Brazil can learn from their videotapes. Thank you for your attention!
Tony, но ты же все таки сделал, а каким тюнером пользовался? У меня сталь толщиной 0,8 мм это влияет на настройку? Магнитный винил толщиной 0,7-0,9 подойдет?
Question, why not tune a hand pan as the circle of fifths directly, 12 dings, like a steel drum? If you can make the dings produce a 2nd harmonic you'd have 2 octaves of all the scales on one pan. IF the dings were sufficiently harmonically resonant (extra thin metal?, extra hard?, specific alloy?) to produce the 2nd and 3rd harmonic 2 and 1/2 octaves would be available to the player and if the 2nd 3rd and 4th harmonics 3 octaves would be available to the player and in all key signatures on ONE pan! ,Why is this not done? The player would still would have ease of modal playing, even with the option of playing in all scales since all the notes of a scale are on one side of the pan with a majority of the "pie" (7/12ths) of the pie for each scale,. To play in any particular key signature one would just rotate the pan and do the same pattern IF the lower the ding in pitch the closer to the center of the pan it is it is, do re mi fa so la ti would then start in toward the center and move out toward the rim in every key signature. All the exotic scales would involve scattering the pattern a little. I would pay to have such a pan made. I would think circle of fifths ordering of the notes rather than scale step ordering of the notes would create less dissonance and inhibition between the notes and they would all ring more truly and more freely and harmoniously. With 12 notes more closely packed on a smaller pan one could play triads or even perhaps 4 part harmony in any key signature using the same pattern in all key signatures. With proper hand technique one could get harmonics on some dings and the fundamental on other dings to perhaps play any voicing of the chord within the instruments range. I would very much like to know why this is NOT attempted! If it would work I'd pay for such a pan. This is a version of the purposed system for an mbira, I must go through a similar process of tuning the 6th harmonic to make this work for the mbira to play chords ruclips.net/video/JaLZitAgaCg/видео.html&start_radio=1 The courses of tines are all octaves, the order of courses is rising circle of fifths left to right, 2 and 1/2 times around the circle, a hand pan would only have to go around 1 time. ruclips.net/video/XpSKXI5Vv5w/видео.html
@@tonycstech This is my proposal on how to design a harmony array hand pan. It will be fully chromatic but to get more than 1 octave harmonics will have to be used, but harmonics are fairly easy on a good hand pan and if the 2nd and 4th harmonic are built in, as they are on some hand pans with more elongated ovals which are necessary anyway to fit 12 notes on the pan one can play two octaves in any key signature! further it is fully isomorphic in so far as the positions of the notes, "fa so la ti" is always every other position and "do re mi" the positions in between these, one simply sticks to one side of the pan to stay in key, it could not be any easier. All the accidentals are also available on one pan, yet it is organized circle of fifths so adjacent notes support one another. The big port in the center prevents cross talk to make the whole pan more harmonious and less dissonant. It can be amplified by a stereo pick up because it has notes on the back and the front that are unisons, so sustain should be greatly increased and we should get chorusing as well as stereo acoustic and electric sound. Positioned sideways straight up with it on a special stand or held between the knees we can play it like the "bass drum" we see carried about in parades. With the closer spacing of the notes due to 12 notes instead of 8 we can play intervals with one hand more easily. We can inscribe the notes on the rim so that we can rotate the pan to get a desired key signature facing toward (or away) from ourselves with accidentals on the far (or near) side from ourselves. With hex bolt pressure can be adjusted on piezo wire on ether side on an "O" ring to get stereo electric sound, a stereo transmitter inside the pan can eliminate the use of cords to an amp.

+Tony Nameless
I think the idea is good but the info is not accurate. For example: "Outlining tonefields is only for pros"... A tone field outlines naturally if the shaping is good. If you want it more outlined you will surely develop a tool, but does not mean only pros can do it. Just shape the instrument as corresponds and it will be fine. That is just one example. In general, as an attempt for learning, this instrument attempt is ok, but it´s poorly shaped, has lack of tension, etc. If you are building, then you know how to make it better, eras, you know you commited mistakes on this instrument and the next one will be better. I mean, with respect, you are just dragging people who don´t know anything about the instrument to commit the same mistakes you did on this attempt.
You got me wrong. I am not trying to be rude or anything. Just being objective. The reason why I don't upload any tutorial is basically because I don't want or feel the need. People who gather about my work have my workshop open and are free to ask anything. I don't mind helping, actually my website www.hanghandpanargentina.com is a free source in spanish with lots of punctual information

Hi friend, congratulations on work,
What kind of metal?
Hey Tony, could you make a video showing the steps on how you form the note fields pls?
Nice work! And nice sound !May I ask this she'll is how much thick
About outlining notes, shouldn't they resonate together in more "chord" based tunings? it seems to me that outlining notes would kill the harmony.
How do you tune a note that sounds distorted, as if it played 2 notes or so at once and even different once to the left and right site?
What is the name Android-program for tuned hang?
Amazing job! So, how much hours you spent to make this one? from the start to the end. Congrats!
Great tutorial, it really helped a lot:). One thing though. I can't find the tune!it app anywhere. Where did you get it?
Thanks! :)

and heat the metal before or after tuning thank you very much !!
Can you help me, I got a hand pan and one note is off tune, is a raga desh c#
The secon note of the ecale is G# but now is C
Hy , Can we use tuning rings that made from wood or just the metal ones are good for this proccess ?
So the cheepest and the only way are the metal rings ?
Or what do you think ,maybe i can made this tools from bicycle rims ?
Thank you for your quick feedback :) ! I will try it as soon as I finish the flatting of the note fields.
Does anybody know where I can get my handpan tuned in the UK?

Tony, а 2мм подойдет?
Tony, пробовал горячекатанную сталь?
Tony, пробовал из грячекатанной стали делать, получалось?
Excuse my ignorance but is this not the same tuning as a steel drum?
Yes, this is a handpan, which is a derivative of the steel pan (AKA steel drum).
STEEL DRUM USUALLY HAS MANY MORE NOTES, A FULL SCALE. HANDPANS HAVE FEWER NOTES, AND THE SCALE HAS LESS RANGE .
Thanks Tony, thats great
