(For those of you just coming to Kate... welcome to the fandom. I wish all her albums were out on CD! I grew up listening, as my dad had all the albums on vinyl and audiocassette. My summers were filled with road trips up and down California, and occasionally to other parts of the West, for which Kate's music was the perfect soundtrack and even now it evokes such strong memories of the coast of Central California that she loved to write about, as seen through the eyes of a child and forever linked to her lyrics... She died when I was 3, but so much of the musical soundtrack of my life is sung by Kate Wolf, it's woven inextricably through my soul now. She has such a way with metaphor, I hope you will explore her original work as well as her recordings of others' songs! May her music bless your life as it has blessed mine.)
What a wonderful testament to the talent and great gift Kate had to share. I'm so very sorry I was not aware of her music when she was alive. Thank you for leaving your soul bared. She does that to us. Blessings to you, Moppet
So sweet - I love when my boy (now 52!) reminisces about what “my music” meant to him! 💕 Kate Wolf’s recording of “Give Yourself to Love” was part of my high school graduation gift to him!
@@Mr63PB This is a recent development- I kickstarted the re-release! They were out of print on CD for years and some had not ever been on CD at the time I wrote this 8 years ago
Gosh, did I love Kate Wolf. Sure, she had a cult following like most folk artists of the 1970s and 1980s but her voice was so pure and angelic. Truly an angel from heaven. We still love you Kate, and we will miss you forever.
I can play this song over & over & over. I loop it, like I do for Paul Butterfield's "In My Own Dream". There are very few songs that affect me like this. This song was recorded between 1977 & 1979. Kate Wolf & Don Lange singing Utah Phillips classic song, "Rock Salt and Nails". We lost her so early, yet she paved the way for Emmylou, Gillian Welch, Nanci Griffith...May we never forget her talent & her songs!

I lucked out and had a girlfriend who introduced me to Kate’s music in the 70’s. It was a time when Eugene was just brimming with a Kate Wolf kind of community vibe. Although time has marched on and both women are no longer here, we’ll always have this gorgeous music to keep comfort.
David Howe Yes. Thank you for your info & adding. She was a major talent & our music would nkt be as it is now without Kate Wolf. My best to you, Moppet
This is from the album "Looking Back at You" released in 1994 with Kate singing the song by Utah Phillips, 'Rock Salt and Nails'. The songs are made from Kate's performances made during 1977 and 1979. She was not well known out of her circle of influence in California at her death in 1986. She often sang in coffee shops and small local venues. Even though she was not famous at her death, she is now one of the most popular woman vocalists in her genre. There is an annual music festival in her honor and she has lead the way for many of our female vocalists today. Nanci Griffith, Emmylou Harris, and Gillian Welch among others credit her as a major influence on them. Kate Wolf will not be forgotten.
@Camelwoman13 Thank you. I am so glad you enjoyed it. She was well ahead of her times...no female was doing music like this. Even the 'folkie' were more advanced than this. She just took her guitar, harp, and voice. That was enough. That was more than enough...it was perfection! This was in the 70's and sounds like it could be right now. Again, I am so glad that you enjoyed.
Kate was widely known and her work greatly admired in the northeast. Her albums got widespread airplay in Boston, Hartford, Albany, Worcester, and other New England cities. Many NewEngland artists covered her work as well.
Thanks for your info. She did have a good following, but it was in limited groups who became familiar with her work. She has dedicated fans, family, and friends. The last time I looked they still have the annual music festival in her honor. All these years later...I wish I had found her before her passing. I was in North Carolina, and wasn't familiar with her til the early very early 90's. She has helped so many modern female singers and is a true inspiration to any who research her. Thanks again for adding your information. I appreciate it and also that you took the time to listen and comment. Please come by anytime. My best to you, Moppet
arny grape I am so happy you found this. I'm happy you enjoyed & could "feel" the music. That's what music is supposed to do. (This is my favorite version also). I love her "Across the Great Divide" also...as a favorite. Wishing you a good music week, Moppet
Wow, where have I been? I just got done listening to three guys covering one of here songs which brought me to this intriguing title. I'm sorry I never got to know her music when she was still living, you can bet I won't miss out on her now though. Thank you for sharing this!!!! Mark
Extraordinarily beautiful version. Some verses flipped around, but that’s okay. . “Wild birds all warbled” is so hard to sing right. I practice that line over and over. The r’s in “bird” and “warbled” really make me want to sing “wild birds are warbled”. Don Lange effortlessly nails it.
She has changed the music of following generations. She was an incredible talent. And, as you say, "such a short life". They still have an annual music festival in her honor, so she has dedicated fans to keep her memory alive. Thank you so much for listening and taking the time to leave a comment. It is appreciated. My best to you, Moppet
I have adored Joan Baez's version since I was in high school. (I love Joan Baez & if you type in her name on my Channel page on Search Channel area you can see the songs of hers I have up), but this is my favorite version. I found Kate Wolf late in my music listening career...just in the late 90's. I love everything I have heard from her & the influence she has still to this day is amazing. What a great artist! We lost her way, way to early! Thank you for your wonderful comment. My best to you!
I'm so glad you found Kate. I didn't know her before her early death either. She was just getting the notice and starting of a super career. I feel so bad that she died before we found her! I have lots of her music, but if it's already on utube I usually don't duplicate. I love many of her songs, so I might just break my rule. Her folks still have a festival in her name with biggies there every year. Would love to go. Thank you so much for leaving your note! My best to you, Barbara
Thanks so much for posting this, the best version of this song in my opinion. I am sorry you didn't get to see her in person, she was as special on the stage as off. It was like your best friend invited you over to her house to play her new songs for you, she connected with her audience that strongly. I saw her about ten times, always in the small venues you describe when I was a graduate student at Berkeley. She even recognized my wife and I at a street fair and came over to us and chatted. She was interested in why we were fans! Imagine that. She was one of the reasons that life can sometimes be so achingly beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
@Maysey1 Don't feel bad. I found this about 12 years ago. It's one of my favorite songs. She was already gone before I found her also. They still have an annual show with lots of artists yearly in her honor due to the impact she had on music...and female singers especially. I am so glad you found this. I love her version of Across The Great Divide also. Thank you so much for listening AND commenting! It helps when I know someone likes what they hear! Greatly appreciated. Moppet (Barbara)
@kickingmule Amen and Peace Brother! I first heard this song sung by Joan Baez, I thought is was an old song, but Utah Phillips wrote it, so it is 'modern'. I love this version. I can see some jilted lover hiding in the swamps & water wanting to shoot the the squirrels (if they were the 'ladies') with rock salt & nails. This is from me, a rather non-violent person! I think the lyrics, vocals, & instrumentation are wonderful & touch me like Blues does! Thanks for commenting. My best, Barbara
@Tsagiglalal, there's an interview somewhere (I don't recall, actually, if I heard it online, or if it was an extra on a DVD, or if the interview got replayed and my dad taped it off NPR for me...) in which Utah Phillips and Kate Wolf were both featured, and he explains that he does not perform this song because it was written at a different time of his life. He was just out of the army and he had a lot of anger over a bad relationship, and it was out of that feeling he wrote it. He put it out in the world and let it fly, but since he is not coming from that place any more he's had no desire to perform it for years. And this was in the 80s, so...
Thanks so much for your input. I hadn't heard that, so found it very interesting. I love to pick up tidbits of info & you all seem to be giving lots of info out. I appreciate it. I love the dialog. Thank you. My best, Moppet
@roguejaina, I met Utah in 1974 at Expo '74 in the Folklife Festival. I was a volunteer. Utah and I became friends over the next 6 months. I last saw him in 1998 at his home in Nevada City. There is an explanation of Rock Salt and Nails by him on RUclips. He says he first sang it for Rosalie Sorrells and she learned it. He never sang it again. I still miss Utah...RIP.
-I first heard "Rock Salt and Nails" on a Joan Baez album and loved it. Then I met Utah Phillips at Expo '74. While I was there I saw an article about him in Rolling Stone that mentioned that he had written this song. Of course, when I got home, I had to check and...there it was. During the duration of the fair, I hoped he would sing it. He never did. I didn't ask. I figured if he wanted to tell me, he would. I know there's a story there. Maybe someone knows.
The story as I heard it is that Phillips wrote the song after getting a "Dear John" letter from his wife while he was in the service and that it was just too painful for him to sing himself.
@HunterxIshmalexDylan I love it! I typed in what I thought was a Celtic group & it was an 90's British rock band. I liked them. Please pass this along to your friends.
