I'm a brand new never-seen-a-Cricut-machine-before-in-my-life person. I bought double-sided faux leather to make earrings which is waaay thicker than the paper thin setting on the Cricut Maker. The blade that comes with the Maker won't cut through it. Can you tell me if there is an automatic setting I could use instead? Or is there some way to do it manually? Love your videos. Hi, Pam! Thank you so much for your kind comment! I'm glad you are finding value in my videos - that's my goal. :) To answer your question, yes, you can use any pattern or design to foil onto leather. However the foiling tool doesn't fill in areas, it draws in a series of lines. So a floral line drawing or a sunburst of lines like the designs I show in this video are perfect, but something like a circle shape would only foil as a circle outline, not a filled in circle shape. I hope that makes sense! :)

I can't wait to make these. I've learned so much from your videos, thank you. Do you have a template in your library for earring cards (the small cards completed earrings are put on)?
Hi, Lisa! Thanks for your message. I'm so glad you like this project! No, I don't have an earring card template yet, but I need to add one! I'll put that on my list of projects for the near future. Thank you!
Hi, great question! I like to put the HTV on the back first. That helps the shapes cut out cleanly. I have a video on four ways to put a back on faux leather earrings that you may find helpful: ruclips.net/video/Q1IK6EfA6c8/видео.html
Hi, thanks for your comment! I've heard of the foil rubbing off occasionally, especially if the faux leather has a glossy coating on it, or is textured. You could try sealing the foil with a polyacrylic sealer (a spray, not one you brush on). Another idea is from my friend Natalie at NeliDesign. She uses a waterproof spray for shoes to protect the foil on faux leather. She has a RUclips video and a written tutorial here: nelidesign.com/faux-leather-and-foil-how-to-make-luggage-tags/ Let me know if you try either of these techniques, and what works for you!
@@AmyRomeu thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I will try it again. It was a textured faux leather so will see if I can find that kind of spray ASAP.
Amy, I so loved your video. I'm a newbie and came across your videos by accident, best one I've made lol. I love the faux leather and am looking for the printed squares but I haven't found them in my area. I would appreciate your input as to where I can get them, or anyone that can tell me, I'm from Alabama.
I just joined your channel because of the Makerfest. your earrings and ornaments were so adorable! I am anxious to make them. Here is my question about this video... Another vlogger I watch gave the opinion that the Cricut foil scratches off more easily than other foiling methods. Since you seem to have been using this product a bit, can you please give your opinions/comments. I am thinking I want to get this system for my Cricut but I am holding back due to the concern of scratching off. Thanks.
Hi, thank you for your comment! I haven't experienced the Cricut foil scratching off of my faux leather earrings. I have experienced smudging if I've used the bold tip with a very fine line design, though. I hope that helps! Amy
Hi, you can cut Cricut brand genuine faux leather with the Deep Point Blade, the one in the black housing. However, Cricut doesn't recommend trying to foil on genuine leather, just faux leather. Something about the natural oils in faux leather. I hope that answers your question! :)
Hi Amy. I read somewhere that the foil faded after Ironing-on backing. I wonder if after foiling you could press the design with waxed paper to seal the design so it won't disappear after ironing on a backing. I would love your thoughts on this.
Hi, Deena. Thanks for your comment. I prefer to heat press the backing onto the faux leather before cutting the earring shapes (or foiling). I recommend this technique instead of applying heat to an already foiled piece of faux leather. I have a video about 4 ways to put a back on faux leather earrings, if you want to check it out!
I think you could paint it or use stamping ink quite nicely! Will you be foiling the faux leather? Cricut faux leather is pebbled, and smooth faux leather is best for foiling.
I've heard mixed reviews from crafters who have tried foil on faux leather. You may want to seal the foil for best results using a clear crafting spray. I also have a crafting friend who used a leather boot protectant spray to seal the foil. You can see it in this RUclips short video: ruclips.net/user/shortsJozJlxc8rKk?feature=share
Is there a brand of faux leather you recommend? I tried foil transfer on faux leather for the first time last night, and it did not transfer at all. All I got was a few tiny sparkles on the leather.
Hi, thanks for your comment! So the faux leather should be 1. smooth and also 2. not have any kind of gloss or coating on it. I have a link to the exact materials I used in the description of this video, and in my blog post here. It comes in lots of colors: amyromeu.com/cricut-foil-transfer-kit-leather-teardrop-earrings/

:) Amy
Hi, Sharon! The way I do it is hook the earring hook onto the jump ring and check that it's on the right way before closing the jump ring. That way it's just a quick flip around if I did it wrong initially. :)
Hi, Jan! Thanks for your question. You may be able to, but the optimal results of foiling come from uniform and direct pressure from the foil tip onto the material. Since cork isn't a smooth or uniform surface, the foil won't press evenly onto the cork. It could still make for a cool look, though! Let me know if you try it. I'd love to hear about your results.
Hi, Denise! I'm excited for you. You'll love the Joy. The designs I show in this video can be made on the Joy, but you need the foil transfer kit made specifically for the Joy. I share all about it (and three new foiled designs!) in this video: ruclips.net/video/9TpRoa0NoHw/видео.html
Hi Amy I see faux leather wasn't in your list for foiling. I spoke to Cricut and they said it should be. After a whie on the phone we figured out that because I had changed my faux leather setting in material settings, I have the Maker, it wasn't recognising it. If you set your faux leather back to original settings it comes up in the list for foiling.
Hi, Audrey! Thank you so much for your comment. I wondered why I couldn't chose faux leather with either my Maker or my Explore Air 2. After reading your message, I've checked my faux leather material setting, and I confirmed it is at the default material settings. I'll have to investigate further. Thank you again for the heads up! :)
@@AmyRomeu Oh that's a shame , I'd set mine to more pressure and that's why I couldn't see it but was fine when I reverted it back to default. The default is 183 cut twice if that is any help. Hope you can sort it. :)

Hi, Deanna! I haven't tried it so I can't say for sure, but you may be able to do with a less intricate pattern than this one. Let me know if you test it out and how it goes!
I don't see why not. How will you get the metallic finish in the design? Maybe you can rub some metallic paint in the score lines? If you try it, let me know how it turns out!
Hi, Katharine! I've linked to the exact foil I used in the video description. :) You can also see it in the Materials section of my written tutorial on my blog here: amyromeu.com/cricut-foil-transfer-kit-leather-teardrop-earrings/
I just tried these earrings using the Air 2 and the foil barely shows up on the leather? Any ideas why? Can I safely retape the foil and refoil the already cut earrings?
Hi, Lea! What kind of faux leather did you use? Pebbled or smooth? Thick or thin? You may need to increase the pressure to “more” next time. If you want to try again, you’ll likely need to use a new piece of foil. The original piece should have most of the foil design removed during the foiling process, unless the foiling didn’t work at all.
@@leamaria63 Hi - thanks for your reply! Yes, I think that may be it. Good news is - that’s an easy fix! Let me know how it does with smooth faux leather, and if you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask! :)
Hi, Kristy! Hmmmm. I haven't had that problem before. Is there a coating or other sort of glossy surface on the faux leather? Is the faux leather thinner than normal?
I impulse bought the foil kit... and then I've seen some things I have concerns about. Have you experienced any rub off with the foil? Or found the need to seal it in anyway?
Hi, Lola! Thanks for your comment. I have not seen any significant rub off, but I think it depends on how much you handle the foiled item because oils from your skin will transfer onto the foiled surface repeatedly over time. Cricut says faux leather takes the foiling transfer better than genuine leather because of the natural oils in genuine leather, so I would think a lot of handling will have an impact over time. If you wanted to try sealing the foil, I would suggest using a light spray of a matte polyurethane spray (not a brushed on sealer).
Hi, Noula! Thanks for your comment. At the time I made this video, you couldn’t, but now you can! Cricut has released the foiling transfer tool just for the Joy. :) Keep in mind the Joy only has foiled line thickness option because it includes one tip.
In my video, I demonstrate the three different foil tip line thicknesses that you can use with the Maker and the Explore Air 2. But the Joy only has one tip and one line thickness so I wanted you to know that what I show in the video doesn’t completely apply to the Joy. Does that help? :)
Hi, Meagan! Yes, it's amazing how small of a hole I can cut with my Cricut. But I also like to show people who get frustrated when the holes don't cut all the way through that there are other ways. Thanks so much for your comment!
I've tried this all kinds of ways, and it's smearing. Every single time. Could it be because of pebbled faux leather? I've tried default pressure and more pressure. I've tried taping it with painters tape and with the tape that came with it. I pulled it super taut. Still a smeared mess. After the 25th try, I am done. Please tell me what else to try. I am really thinking this is only going to work on smooth faux leather.
Hi, thanks for your comment! Sorry you are frustrated! I've only tried this on smooth faux leather and I was happy with the results. I wouldn't recommend pebbled faux leather just because the foil adheres best to a smooth surface. Try some smooth faux leather and let me know how it goes!

Bought this but it’s useless to me because I can’t get it to work on *actual* leather. Not cricut leather or fake leather but real samples I have. Kinda frustrating.
Hi, thanks for your comment! I'm sorry you are frustrated. Unfortunately, Cricut recommends foiling only for faux leather, not for genuine leather. They said when the launched the foiling tip that the foil doesn't work well with the natural oils in genuine leather. :( I share that in the video, and also share my personal experience that smooth faux leather works much better than textured or pebbled faux leather. I would love it it they came up with a foiling solution for genuine leather!
@@AmyRomeu Yep, it’s frustrating. I don’t want to use or purchase pre-packaged supplies. I re-use and re-purpose. It’s not surprising they’d set it up to only work with their product though. I even tried putting actual metal leaf under the foil and using the pressure to emboss that into my leather, but it didn’t work. Then I smeared some foil glue on the leather, did the same, and made a mess. hahahah. Good thing is that it all washed off. lol. I’m going to just keep experimenting until I get it to work on the leather I want to use. Hope I don’t break the cricut.

Hi, Mona! Thank you so much for your comment. The faux leather I used is from Amazon. I've added a link in the description box for you.
Thank you!
Do you add the backing HTV before or after the foiling!?
Hi, great question! I like to put the HTV on the back first. That helps the shapes cut out cleanly. I have a video on four ways to put a back on faux leather earrings that you may find helpful: ruclips.net/video/Q1IK6EfA6c8/видео.html
Hi Amy, thank you so much for this video. I have tried it on faux leather, however it rubs off, do I need to seal it somehow?
Hi, thanks for your comment! I've heard of the foil rubbing off occasionally, especially if the faux leather has a glossy coating on it, or is textured. You could try sealing the foil with a polyacrylic sealer (a spray, not one you brush on).
Another idea is from my friend Natalie at NeliDesign. She uses a waterproof spray for shoes to protect the foil on faux leather. She has a RUclips video and a written tutorial here: nelidesign.com/faux-leather-and-foil-how-to-make-luggage-tags/
Let me know if you try either of these techniques, and what works for you!
Hi, Gloria! Thanks for your comment! Do you mean the foil sheets? Those are available on Amazon, at Cricut.com, and many craft stores.
Amy
@@AmyRomeu Thanks for your shared experience Amy!
Will this technique work on Cricut leather (not faux) if you use a heavy duty blade? (Just recently purchased some leather so curious)
Just wondering - can the cricut faux leather be colored with any thing? I was thinking of shading the tips of leaves, etc. Thanks!
I think you could paint it or use stamping ink quite nicely! Will you be foiling the faux leather? Cricut faux leather is pebbled, and smooth faux leather is best for foiling.
Do you seal the earrings to protect the design? Thank you
Hi, I don't. But you can try a few light coats of a matte or satin polyurethane spray.
Do You put the foil backing on before the foil process, or after?
Hi, Sandie! I recommend putting it on before. Putting it on after may damage the foil with heat from the heat press.
How permanent is the foil on the faux leather? Will it hold up awhile with repeated wear?
:) Amy
What is the best way to determine how to attach the hooks. Each time I always manage to have them backwards. TIA
Hi, Sharon! The way I do it is hook the earring hook onto the jump ring and check that it's on the right way before closing the jump ring. That way it's just a quick flip around if I did it wrong initially. :)
Can you foil cork earrings?
Just ordered the Cricut Joy, can this be done on the Joy?
@@AmyRomeu Excellent! Thank you so much! I'm enjoying watching your easy and through videos while I await sweet joy!
Or make 4 and glue together....wod.that work?
Hi, Norma! Do you mean to put a back on the earrings? Yes, you can! I have a video about 4 different ways to put a back on faux leather earrings if you want to check it out: ruclips.net/video/Q1IK6EfA6c8/видео.html
What tool did you use when you cut earrings?
Hi, Mia! I use the regular fine point blade to cut faux leather. :)
Amy, have you tried to foil transfer on cork?
I have not! I wonder how that would work with the texture of the cork being uneven? Have you tried it? I would love to know how that comes out!
Could the foil be done on fau suede ?
Hi, Deanna! I haven't tried it so I can't say for sure, but you may be able to do with a less intricate pattern than this one. Let me know if you test it out and how it goes!
@@AmyRomeu i did try it on suede same settings and both of your earrings, work great
Any reason I can't use my scoring tool instead of the foil transfer tool kit?
I don't see why not. How will you get the metallic finish in the design? Maybe you can rub some metallic paint in the score lines? If you try it, let me know how it turns out!
What type of foil do I get on Amazon
Hi, Katharine! I've linked to the exact foil I used in the video description. :) You can also see it in the Materials section of my written tutorial on my blog here: amyromeu.com/cricut-foil-transfer-kit-leather-teardrop-earrings/
Where do you get your faux leather
Hi, Shirley! Thanks for your comment. In my video description you’ll find links to the faux leather I used. I hope that helps!
@@AmyRomeu Hi Amy, I just saw your post about using smooth leather. Mine is pebbled and that might be the culprit. Sigh, lol!
@@leamaria63 Hi - thanks for your reply! Yes, I think that may be it. Good news is - that’s an easy fix! Let me know how it does with smooth faux leather, and if you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask! :)
Hi Amy. I'm using faux smooth leather and the foil is not transfering at ALL. I've used more pressure and still nothing ... any suggestions?
Hi, Kristy!
@@AmyRomeu thanks so much!
@@lhodgens It's my pleasure! Let me know if you try sealing something you foil!
Can I use my joy for this?
Hi, Noula! Thanks for your comment. At the time I made this video, you couldn’t, but now you can! Cricut has released the foiling transfer tool just for the Joy. :) Keep in mind the Joy only has foiled line thickness option because it includes one tip.
@@AmyRomeu that is great. I don't understand what you mean by your comment "keep in mind...."
In my video, I demonstrate the three different foil tip line thicknesses that you can use with the Maker and the Explore Air 2. But the Joy only has one tip and one line thickness so I wanted you to know that what I show in the video doesn’t completely apply to the Joy. Does that help? :)
@@AmyRomeu I will have a look at the video again. Thank you.
Great video however the Cricut can cut the holes for you if you use a template etc.
@@AmyRomeu where did you find the smooth faux leather from? Thank you so much for commenting!

I would love to know if you found anything that worked on your real leather!!
