To anyone wondering why the language is so similar to Arabic it is because the island has been colonized by many regions before gaining its independency in 1964. It was colonised by the French, The Knights of Saint John (Italians), Arabs and the English. It has been also highly influenced by the regions around it. Thank you for reading and I'm speaking on behalf of all my fellow Maltese islanders.
It's similar because it's a descendant of the Phoenician language which is also Semitic and because of the Arabic invasion. Maltese is most definitely a descendant of Phoenician though. Example:
Phoenician: al yikunlak zare behayim tahet sems
Maltese: La jkollok zerriegha bej il-hajjin taht ix-xemx
@@magnuscorbin5040 The sentence in maltese does not make any sense.
@@emmabartoli7727 It would be worded a bit differently but the point was to show you the similarity of words and structure. Remember the text is from 500BC so it's very remarkable that they're almost the same. It's like comparing Archaic Latin to Modern Italian.
@@magnuscorbin5040 Yes but in English the sentence would be 'When you have a seed between the living under the sun.' I understand but try and maybe ask a native speaker next time or search it up or something. ☺
@@emmabartoli7727 I am a native speaker. The point was to show you the similarities with Phoenician. Doesn't matter that the translation isn't exactly the same. In fact it shouldn't be because there's a 2500 year age difference.
I'm half maltese and my dads planning to take us back to live in Malta so this was really helpful!

Are you living in malta now? hope your enjoying it!! I'm hoping to travel there once I finish school :>
I like the way you put the female and male expressions next to the pictures. That's a great idea and makes it easy to follow and remember. It's a bit hard to hear though. If you could make it much louder would be good. We can always put down our volume, but can't go above 100% - where it's still very soft to hear.
Grazzi għall-vidjows tiegħek, jgħinuni nitgħallem il-Malti aħjar! :)
We miss you in Maltese
I uploaded another video :)
I really like this language. I love the mixture between Italian and Arabic. I love it!!!!!
Maltese is a direct descendant of the Phoenician language. Example from the Tabnit sarcophagus:
Phoenician: al yikunlak zare behayim tahet sems
Maltese: La jkollok zerriegha bej il-hajjin taht ix-xemx
Thank you so much! I plan to move to Malta soon so this is very helpful :)
What an excellent teacher. I have listened to several of your videos. Clear and excellent. This one is a touch muffled . But on the whole excellent! thank you.

Nice language, I like the romance words in there! 😁
Bonswa ! I am Lebanese and I planned to visit Malta from a long time ago. I find it beautiful that there are similarities between Maltese and Lebanese because we both mix different languages in the same sentence when we speak (for us it's Lebanese, French and English). For example I could have greeted you with a Bonsoir. I already speak Lebanese, French, italian, English and standard arabic which all help me a lot to unterstand most of maltese words. I find it really beautiful. Could you please do more videos to learn more about maltese ? Greetings and love from your Mediterranean brothers 🇱🇧❤️🇲🇹
Yes maltese is very similar to lebanese.maltese comes from the phoenicians
@@JeanetteEllul I am glad to see that maltese are still proud of their phoenician heritage like we do in Lebanon. One more thing in common! And are there phoenician archeological sites in Malta like those we can find in Lebanon and the former phoenician colonies in the Mediterranean?
@@rayanmalouli5279 yes we have phoenician archeological sites

Arabic! You speak the Tunisian dialect.
I like the video, a great job can you make more videos about Maltese culture and tradition
I love malta
Wait can't Jien and Jiena be used by one person interchangeably?
Jien and jiena are the same. Some people say jien others say jiena but both mean me.
Lovely, thank you
What's the difference between "Kif int" and "Kif inti" ?
There is no difference. Some people say kif int ? Others say kif Inti? Both mean how are you?
Jeanette I have also heatrd people say "Kif inti". Is that correct as well?
Sorry Jeanette I notice below that you have already answered this question.
bongu is also hello? is that correct? thank you x
Bongu it’s good morning
I'm in love with Malte
Can u plz talk louder ?
Prefect the video by the way 🤙🤙🤙
grazzi hafna شكرا جزيلا
I love it and it’s fun to lorn moltes
the audio should be a little louder
why i feel its like arabic or im wrong really ?
Your not wrong because the two languages are connected and similar
Well they're both Semitic but they're clearly different languages like Italian and French.
It is similar to Arabic, especially Algerian language.
İ am from Algeria it is Tunisian
Mixed with Italian + French (and some English)
@@ic.xc. you don't know ....
It is 90 % arabic (Tunisian)+ 10 Italian
@@احسنحلجديدالعلم bongu like bon jour - bonswa like bonsoir.. yeah I don't think there's any French influence at all Lmao. I'll admit though, I don't see any English influence in the language
@@Malevolous104 it's a fascinating language as its literally Tunisian Arabic at the base and heavily decorated with Indo-European languages and germanic, English included. The syntax and well as phonology and morphology are shockingly similar to Tunisian Arabic. My grandfather, used to tell me war stories when he used to hang out with Maltese and he used to say he understands them perfectly as if speaking a form of Tunisian Arabic. Anyway this is a super cool language
mela
It's like turkish arabic and frech mixed
لي ضحكني هي grazzi hafna زعمة حفنة ديال شكرا المغاربة لغيفهموني ههه
Kif int malta
Jiena tajba u inti?
Wtf so similar too Arabic weird
Not weird at all - Malta is an island in the Mediterranean and would have been an important port for trading, naval exploration and colonisation so it’s just natural their language was influenced by the surrounding lands the closest being Sicily and Tunisia. They have also suffered constant changes in ownership before becoming independent over the course of the last 3000 year with influence from all around the Mediterranen. The Maltese language roots are Semetic but has influence from Romance languages and others and although it uses the Latin Script it sounds like a mixture of Arabic and Romance languages.
This is Arabic 😂
Mhux eżatt. Jixbah lill-Għarbi imma xorta huwa lingwa differenti. Kemm tifhem minn dawn iż-żewġ sentenzi, per eżempju?
No it's Semitic and it's descended from Phoenician. Semitic =/= Arabic
