- We headed to a place called "The Gin House" for a picnic in the wilderness south of Tucson, Arizona. I figured it would be a great opportunity to give a your of the camp kitchen bins we use when we are overlanding or just out for a quick weekend of camping.

I bake sourdough bread, so I have the above combo dutch oven. The 10.25" shallow skillet part is what we bring on camping trips, I think just the "normal" Lodge 10.25" skillet should also fit fine even thought it's a bit deeper: amzn.to/2ATvjrS When packing the bin, the skillet usually goes on second-to-last, _upsidedown_, then we put our 2 12" plastic plates upside down on top of that. Fits like a glove with all the other stuff we have in there.

Brilliant! Thanks for sharing. The spray bottle is good, I have done that for years, even at home. Personally, I went thru oh so many spray bottles which eventually just end up in the landfill because that spray top will eventually break. This ends up to be my permanent system now. Remember when those little rascals were younger and they used those toddler sippy cups? Well, I'd upcycled those to be my "faucets" and "soapy water faucets". Same difference with the spray bottles except, the sippy don't break. I use LifeFactory's glass bottles (the good thing about these is that you can buy the flat-head caps which keep the bottles leakproof for when we are on the road). And, the "water" bottle faucet can double as actual drinking bottle if we ever run that short on water supply. Your kitchen bin is brilliant. We are still contemplating whether to get your system or the Pelican box ... (I like your system because I could just "roll" my whole kitchen with me and not having to "make" camp). I like the Pelican box because I can just lift the thing to camp. I have a feeling I'll be doing your systems though, I would, however, find a way to organize that giant bottom bin so that I'm not "tossing" things in there (I'm a bit ADHD about that stuff. When I get to camp, I wanna just open the bin and rock and roll ... I think having to "find" things in that bin is an amazing recipe for making someone turn into the Incredible Hulk after having drive hours to get to camp, bug proof the tent area, setup the tent, setup the kitchen table, setup the cots, blow up the sleeping mats, bring all that blankets down from the car, etc. Ya! Just came back from almost a week of camping. Nearly lost my mind from constantly digging for those tiny items in the big bin. This made so much sense
Good video. I am designing and then going to build a Chuck box, and have been watching a lot of these videos to make sure I didn't forget anything. The only suggestion I would have is that you might want to separate the towel that you dry your balls with from the towel that you dry the clean dishes with.
It was your video that made me pull the trigger and buy a rigid organizer like yours to go camping here in Hawaii to keep dirt and rain from my camp gear. I originally was just using some plastic sterlite drawer system. But when I take them camping the rain, dust, dirt, ants, and bugs can get in there easily. When I went to Home Depot to discover that this system is nearly sold out cleared shelves in Honolulu and Pearl City and Kapolei. Upsetting for sure as I only got the roller, the crate, and the 10 Bin organizer. The locking feature is definitely a secure option I always like on any system to keep the thieves at bay and my mind at ease. I’m also now going to add the clear top husky 20 gal red bins as well for camping items as well. Mahalo Nui Loa!
I've been using the same cases for a few years now, and love 'em. I use the large (wheeled) one for my kitchen/cooking stuff. A couple of medium sized ones for camp essentials (flip flops, bath mat, cleaning supplies, trash bags, lanterns, spare fuel cannisters, etc.), the other one is for hammocks, tarp, stakes, guy lines, top/bottom quilts, suspension straps, etc. I keep the small cases for extra tarps, cordage, repair tape, etc. and keep the milk crates for automotive stuff. The large one doubles as a seat while cooking, the medium/small ones also double as seating in camp if someone stops by.

Great walkthrough...those Ridgid boxes are really handy, however I did learn something new as I did not realize that the little pivoting side handles were designed to lock the boxes together - what a great idea, and here I've had my collection of boxes for over a year yet had never discovered that obvious feature 😃 Thanks for the heads-up 😉
Great way to keep your self organized. We bought the FRONTRUNNER WOLFPACK . Just like you we used to keep everything together in one big bin..... NO A GOOD IDEA. We learned our lesson fast.

I use the same cases and they work perfectly. Wow, you travel light. Maybe it’s because I keep mine in my camp trailer, but they are just stuffed. Full size spices, a Dutch oven, cast iron pot and pan, my tray is filled with knives, and stuff. I use the big wheeled one on the bottom instead of the crate. Thanks for the vid.

I picked up this exact toolbox a few weeks ago for getting my camping stuff better organized. I really like the wheels on the bottom piece. Makes much easier to move around instead of heavy bins.
Great idea! I have the same gear but with wheels and handle when they first came out at home Depot,filled with my tools. Makes me think about converting to your great idea!

Yes those bins work great I use the small one for tie downs and the big wheeled one they make with a small one as a cook box. The wheeled one works great when you have to walk a ways out and the price isn't bad.
I like how compact your food is, probably not the tastiest food when you go dehydrated but I’m sure everything tastes good out I. The nature. Those Nutella packs and the hash browns are a great idea
Great idea on tool bins!! All of my stuff is in one large plastic tote. Been thinking about switching it all to a very old suitcase that has wheels and an extendable handle. Your cases look much better. Great ideas! Tfs
Update: I've assembled your kitchen system for myself & I'm very happy with the results. Looking forward to trying it out in a couple weeks. Honestly, you should put this on OB (like you did your shower system-adopting that too) or ExpoPortal. Here are my observations.
I compared the DeWalt & Rigid Systems side by side.
Waterproofness: Essentially identical. Love it because I can now leave my kitchen gear outside in the rain or even put it in my roof rack if I want. I also think the seals will help to reduce food scent that attracts wildlife-we'll see how that plays out.
Stacking: Rigid system gives sturdy handles that are easy to use and are never going to break-plus they can be used to carry the toolbox when not attached.
Locks: DeWalt's is a little more robust but just isn't as easy to use as the Rigid.
Organizer: I prefer DeWalt's 22" organizer because it has drop down compartments from the lid once opened & this space is just closed off empty space in the Rigid.

Toolbox: DeWalt has a slightly larger tool tray inside & it's position is a little more adjustable. The inside walls of the DeWalt are essentially straight making packing perhaps a little easier. Also, DeWalt has a bigger tool box if needed

Crate: No comparison. Rigids crate won't spill it's items when locked in place. I suppose there might be a setting where you want to be able to reach into the "crate" when it's locked together which you can do with the DeWalt but I prefer the closed nature of the Rigid. In Arizona I bet it's great for letting stuff dry. Honestly, the crate makes all the difference in the whole system for me.

Griddle: The ProSource Kitchen hg-1101-griddle Professional Heavy Duty Reversible Double Burner Cast Iron Grill Griddle, 20 by 9-Inch, Black is just 1-2mm too narrow to perfectly lock behind the tabs in the back of the toolbox. It sits there well enough though to pack the toolbox and the tray then helps lock it in place. I'm keeping it.

12oz double wall stainless steel cups are a nice option for the kids for hot chocolate. The silicone lids from the cups above fit them. They stack together (though not anywhere near as efficiently as the kids cups above) & the kids cups above stack inside them.

New Sub here...Yeah, I found those Rigid boxes about 4 years ago and did the same thing only I also got the base box with the rollers on it. I put the heavy items like the camp stove in it along with pots, pans, and utensils in it. The second large box has the pantry in it. The small one is on top and has the same as yours. Very handy set up as these boxes are weather proof. it fits well under my roof top tent mounted above out of the Florida Sun. The rollers make going from the truck to the camp cooking area a breeze as this stuff can be a bit hefty. LOL!
I also use a small one for tools that I keep on my cab top rack and it stays there pretty much year round. Although the orange has faded somewhat with time, it has still remained weather proof and solid. Have a great day!

I love the bin idea for sure as they would seal tight and keep dust out in the back of a pickup truck.
Also, those hashbrowns are incredible. We made 2 boxes at home for trial purposes for 3 people and 1 would have been more then enough.
It's surprising how much hashbrown comes out of those little boxes!

We have a very similar setup for our 96 hour kit, except we have the large wheeled base and an additional small box. It is easy for my wife or daughters to get into the car. If driving is not an option, it can be wheels down to road quite easily.

The important bits of the planning are pretty much done. For a lot of the trip we're gonna play it by ear as far as route goes once we get over to La Paz. I think I may head to to Mexico with my buddy Waka in October to get the paperwork all completed for insurance and my driving permit. I still have to buy my ferry ticket from Topolobampo to La Paz, maybe i should figure that out this week... hmm...
Brilliant idea! I have been searching for camping gear boxes with some kind of organization or tray. The closest I've found to what I'm looking for is the Yeti Load out. It's nice, but with there were more sizes, and they're super pricey. Never even thought of tool boxes!

I about spit out my coffee when he said they were just on a day trip! Lol There’s enough stuff there to feed a whole bear family for a week HAHA....and good job covering up those Rigid labels! Wouldn’t want any sticky fingers thinking you actually had power and construction tools in there!
Very nice video. I'm new to overlanding; just finished up with the essentials: Jeep Gladiator build, recovery gear, first aid, rooftop tent, etc. Now, I'm planning for the camp cooking gear, which I have most of. But the storage is what I'm figuring out now. Your set up, I believe would work for my family as well. I also was lucky enough to acquire a few pelican boxes, but those are reserved for other essentials. However, I really like this set up. Thanks for putting this together; very helpful.

Regarding the clothes pins and open bags, something I use at home is "binder clops". Stronger (metal), last almost forever and they come at least 4 different sizes. You may consider it.

I use the Arm & Hammer Laundry detergent buckets. They do stack but don't lock together.
I even put a spigot on one to carry water or leave it on the roof for a warm shower

I like where your head is at with those clothesline pins for chip clips. I started using binder clips a few years ago and they’re absolutely the best. Strong hold and they last forever.

I have been using 22" DeWalt tool stackable tool bins for some gear. Ours have drop downs once opened that have 3 lidded 1cm tall bins as well-great for storage of small items & compactness. I really like the waterproofness & lockability as I feel I can put them outside if I want/need the extra room inside. They also are very carryable with the handle & I love the stacking.
It's funny, I had just been thinking about converting our "kitchen" from a multipocket duffel to those DeWalt cases. I think I may choose the Rugged version you have instead as I really like the "crate" option.
We also use those sporknives.
Going to look into the Idaho Spuds. Might recommend the Snapdragon Pho they have at Costco, it's surprising tasty. My Mom brought it for my breakfast at ExpoWest this year and now I have them at home & work as they are quick & easy (I like to add frozen shrimp when I'm home).
Sprayer is BRILLIANT. Definitely going to adopt that practice.

Before the sprayer we were ripping through water so fast just doing dishes every night, which is not a good thing here in the desert where we have a much larger minimum requirement for on-hand water needs. Once we started using a sprayer it was like a life changing moment. We use easily half the water we used to. NOTE: The exact griddle we have we picked up a Burlington a couple years ago. I took measurements and the one linked above is the exact same measurement-wise and it looks like it's exactly the same one I have based on the photos - just a different brand. Thanks for the info. Your sprayer concept is one of those brilliant ideas that I can totally understand but somehow never thought of - I'm sure it will be camp altering. I'm going through the transition of decades of adventuring alone or with girlfriends to doing it with the kids (I chickened out & didn't do much until the youngest was 5 or 6 as I usually escaped to join my Mom on remote UT/CO trips a couple times a year).
I really like the adoption of the "overlanding" moniker, I used to always have to give this long, unsatisfying explanation of how what I did wasn't really just off-roading or camping but something in between. (I realize it has it's issues but I prefer it to the past).
With regard to gear, I was always pretty brutally spare in the past & after a year or two with the kidsm, I finally realized I needed to embrace the largesse of family camping (might of been when I had to set up a mountaineering & a backpacking tent to accomodate the 4 of us in an established campground I would have shunned in the past but then saw a family roll in and set up camp in a jiffy. Travelling by myself was always about going. Travelling with kids is about taking the time along the way to enjoy the stuff a jaded adult might overlook.
Thanks for the thorough equipment notes. My wife's enthusiasm for camping diminised significantly once kids came along and I'm realizing comfort is the key to her happiness. I was surprised how much I liked your setup as it had elements I could totally appreciate but hadn't considered. While I like the DeWalt 22" boxes slightly more, that crate is way better than the DeWalt version & the Rugged boxes are WAY more affordable (I had picked up the DeWalt for half price in the past). Also, watertightness is critical as I want to be able to leave them out in the rain which is always a possibility here in the NW plus I am transitioning to more stuff on my roof than ever before and it opens up that option.
Finally, just wanted to say how much I appreciate you taking the time to produce these VLOGs. I really enjoy the family adventure ones and I have found you can always pick up little pearls of wisdom from others. Also, I want to do something similar for my kids posterity but have found the editing time to be too burdensome for me right now - so good for you!

The editing is definitely a beast, it took forever, like 12+ hours, for the first few, as I get more familiar with the software and my workflow that time is shrinking, but it's still up there, probably 6-8 hours on average. If i spread it over a few days it's not, too bad... unfortunately I usually procrastinate until Sunday evening, so i'm up until like 1am editing to get the videos out Monday morning, LOL. I definitely recommend doing it though, it will be awesome when the kids can look back on this stuff.
I totally agree. Watching Lifestyle Overland & Swellrunner I realized their VLOGs were the best possible gift they could give their kids. I even grabbed a GoPro & at least recorded some material with my Mom on our last two trips. She's 74 and goes remote and solo several times a year. I realized it would be great to be able to show that to my kids when they are older, to eventual grandkids and even for myself to reminisce once my Mom is gone. Anyway, it's fun riding along. Keep up the good work!
I like those boxes and have thought of doing the same, however, they smell really funky. Does that dissipate over time? Love that little syrup bottle! We use those cool spoonfoknives too!

We have been using Frontrunner Wolf boxes, but this gave me the idea to re-purpose some plastic hardware bins from a hardware case I just threw out to hold stuff inside the Frontrunner boxes.

Yep, they definitely had that "plasticky" smell when we first bought them, and it took a while for it to fade away, like a couple months, if i recall. When we'd get back from a trip, i'd leave them stored with a rag propping them open so they could air out over time. When i open them now I pretty much just smell mexican cocoa in the "pantry" bin and the seasoning oil on the cast iron in the middle bin. The crate never really had the smell since it can air out so easily. One thing i forgot to point out in the video is that the top two organizer bins are also air/water/dust tight which is awesome. One downside to this is that one time i accidentally left a dish cleaning sponge in the dish bin and it got moldy and ruined because it was sealed up and couldn't dry out. oops.

nice set up...I was recently checking out the apache cases which are like the palican cases but I think thes will work better!
I've been using rigid boxes for camping as well. I took the panel off the lid to create more room. Pops out easily
I love that idea, i've been considering doing that and then attaching a mesh "pocket" with rivets or something

Top of the second box looks like you could squeeze some small items in those voids. Maybe little velcro sacks or something? Not sure how deep but looked like it could be your small condiment organization and/or seasonings.
Yes! I had the same thought and had planned to heat weld some mesh pockets onto the lids of the lid of the small box and the medium box. the medium box has a panel that can be pulled off the inside of the lid to allow for another inch and a half or so of storage depth. I still haven't gotten around to adding the mesh pockets though.

Because of your video I went to Home Depot and bought the Rigid stackable tool boxes and bins. Thank you!! Now if I can find that griddle I’m set. Any help on locating one to fit down into the tool box?

At the time this video was made, we were using a Coleman Triton two burner and it fit perfect. Currently we use a Cook Partner 18" two-burner and it still fits on that as well. I suspect it will be useable for almost any two-burner camp stove
I would place your emergency gear (poncho, space blanket, etc) in a separate freezer bag.

@@adamgordon3609 Yeah, the wheelie box option was too bulky for our needs, but I know a few people who were use it and really enjoy the convenience of being able to roll all the bins around as one unit. I wish we could have fit it in our setup

Have you ever tipped them over or stored on their sides? Curious how everything holds up on the inside and if they stay in place if maybe dropped or stored on the sides as compared to on their bottom. TIA
The top short bin we've stored on it's side (and dropped!) about a billion times. The orange organizers inside connect right up against the top, so everything stays in place perfectly. We've also tipped the middle one on it's side a few times with no disorganization, but i think that will mostly depend on how each person has that one stored. we have mostly large dishes and cooking utensils in there, so they don't really move around much
How do you haul it over to your site? Is it heavy? I’ve been looking for an alternative and I think this is great.
The great thing is that because they lock/unlock with each other, you can carry them over individually, or if you are feeling extra strong, you can carry them all as one unit
They make one of these with wheels the others will lock onto.
I use Milwaukee have there drawer packout for our pantry

The way we had them stowed, they were held against the side by the cooler and bags so they didn't bounce around. They all stack together so they are at least stable vertically

Try binder clips instead of clothes pins (they hold better and smaller),
That rectangular cast iron pan you have is a griddle, not a skillet. You may also carry a skillet or Dutch oven, but that one was a griddle.

I got it a few years ago at a programming language conference, if I recall, it was the logo of some Japanese tech company.
Those are the best knives! Can’t beat the price under 10 bucks too
