    Today took the s5 pro out of some box in my attic to give it to my teenager nephew who took interest in photography. When fuji stopped producing dslrs, i litterally didn't buy a new camera. Haven't done photography really. I was kinda disappointed, and couldn't find any satisfying replacement ever. Best camera ever!

    As a portrait photographer, I've never seen better skin tones and colors than on the Fujifilm s5pro and the Nikon D700, despite their age and outdated technology.
    Additionally, I have a Nikon Z6ii and a Fuji XT-4 in my collection. Even though I love the new technology, the older S5pro and the D700 camera bodies have a special place in my heart.

    After watching your video I purchased an S5 Pro. I was very lucky to find a near perfect example, boxed with all the original accessories for 100GBP (approx 125 USD). I set the camera to all your recommended settings and went out with it for the first time today. I am thrilled with the results, the colours are wonderful and film like which to an oldie like me is a good thing!! Thank you so much for recommending this camera.

    I watched your crazy 20-Camera yearend review, and you convinced me to buy this one! 😮 I’m setting it up now per your suggestions. 😅 I’m pumped! Thanks for your work on this. You have an infectious enthusiasm plus a point of view plus just enough technical data-and the kicker is your hand gestures are entertaining without being distracting (I think you know what I mean,
    : those broad, repetitive, exhausting, vertigo-inducing histrionics so popular on YT these days). I’ll take this baby for a spin and check back with you later. Blessings to you and your family!

    I have been watching your videos and I bought this camera for about a year now and I still use it. I own a fuji XT3 but I wanted to use the OG fuji that has the film simulation and the infamous super CCD sensor. I've been obsessed with the color that it renders on a CCD sensor. Reminiscent of film and it has that punch and soul on the photos. I own the Nikon D200 as well which is technically the same body so using the S5 pro isn't much of a change at all. Fuji sensor on a Nikon body. I am a happy kid. I wouldn't want to let go of it. It's fun using it and I'll keep it til it breaks. Thanks for this review. :)

    I've somewhat recently started dipping my feet into photography, and I bought this camera about 2 weeks ago, as my first DSLR. Maybe it's not the best value proposition in the used camera market, but I really wanted this one in particular.
    My experience with it has been pretty much completely painless, despite being fairly inexperienced with photography. The dynamic range and highlight retrieval are a great safety net in case of overexposure, since I am almost guaranteed to be able to recover the image in RAW. That's especially helpful, since my camera seems to not have the same underexposing tendencies. It seems more prone to overexpose, especially in lower light, but it will do either one every now and then.
    Speaking of RAW processing, I can vouch for SilkyPix in particular as far as the S5 Pro is concerned (and from what I've seen/heard, the S3 Pro too). It properly interpolates the file to 12MP, it takes advantage of the entire dynamic range, and it even attempts to pull extra detail data (as in resolution, and not just highlights) from the small pixels. It's fairly gimmicky and barely has an effect, but if anything it at least shows some attention to detail when it comes to understanding and interpreting Super CCD output files.
    One last thing, I've been using a 32 GB SanDisk CF card in mine and it's fully compatible with it, it detects it properly and uses the whole capacity.
    All in all, I think it's a great camera, and it hasn't really let me down so far even when I tried to push it to its limits. Which may or may not include attempting low light and night shots with a somewhat inadequate lens because it's the only one I have, specially the Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD.

      @@OneMonthTwoCameras Thanks Ali! I think it's a good camera and it was easy to adjust to it because of my familiarity with the D700. Lovely ergonomics and build but the D700 is better IMHO. I'm afraid I don't get on with the sensor. I remember switching to the D700 in 2008 and full frame was a game-changer. My favourite sensors are in order D4(Df) D3(D700) and Fuji Xtrans 16MP. Really though, for me it's about how the sensors and lenses play together and I am now set up with three AFD Nikkor primes and the Df. Those lenses have their faults but they also have a particular look that I'm after which goes hand-in hand with how the sensors render - taking me back to shooting transparency in the 90s. I don't have any CCD love but I do remember getting my first 16MP sensors and thinking that was the sweet spot. I would love to try theZf but there are none available in Aus; the Nikon rep said he might be able to lend me one in the new year (!!) I think the Zf with Ai/Ais glass is the review I want to see, because for me it's better just to use AFDs on the Df unless it's a 50mm f2 for landscapes. If there's any way I can help with Df thoughts I'd love to; as mentioned your Zf review is by far the best I've seen. Best wishes!

    Was a wedding photographer for 30 ys. Had 2 of these Fuji S5 Pros for 10 yrs doing weddings......and i only shot JPEG no Raw back up, cameras never let me down. Looking back through my work,90% of my best portrait work were from these cameras, Amazing colour. skin tones and dynamic range. File size takes a back seat to image quality.Never had a problem printing 16 x20 for clients with this camera. Missing the quality of the colour files ,looking to re purchase another , my search brought me here . i used a white balance setting that many S5PRO users use to put in camera, was to take white balance reading of a 18% Grey card outside on a cloudy overcast day and save that in your cameara in one of the pre set balance options.
    Am realising that the new digital cameras do not have the same quality as compared to the first generation of cameras , particularly ones with CCD sensors, all the new cameras can offer is big resolution files with no character and lots of bells and whistles. Stll have and shoot the Nikon D700, D3s and D3X.

    Interesting. I selected this video to learn more about the metering system. My wife got this camera when it came out in 2007 and it sat on the shelf for years after she got tired of doing weddings. I picked it up a few years ago to use and learn from. I have noticed that in the harsh sun light the metering system goes crazy and it does not seem to be accurate. Shooting in manual mode I will have to under expose, according to the meter, to get the shot correct. All in all, I love this camera and you have said it beautifully. Thanks for the info!

    I used to use 2 x S5 Pros for weddings from when they came out and they lasted me right up until the X-T1 came out in 2014. Still shooting Fuji today and I always shoot RAW+Jpg. A couple of years ago I went through a full wedding editing the RAWs in Lightroom and then by chance looked at the jpegs. I had just spent many hours editing the RAWs to look like the jpegs straight out of the cameras! I now, like you shoot, still shoot RAW+Jpg, but now the RAWs are the backup just in case I don't like the jpegs. Saves LOADS of time in my workflow. Oh, and of course, the dynamic range is even better than the S5 Pro.
    I've just picked up an S5 Pro and it's crazy to find out that I had forgotten more about the menu system, etc than I remembered. Still, it's coming back gradually and I'll be comparing it with my X series Fujis, which are of course far more compact and easier on the back and shoulders!

    Loved your video. I just brought my S5 back to life a week ago and have been getting used to it. I’ve shot Nikon since 1979 - FM. My first DSLR was a Fuji S1, which I have also brought back to life. Dynamic range has always beat my Nikon’s hands down, and the color is remarkable and distinctive. I agree with your comment about dark images in any program mode. I shot in S2 mode and had greens and blues popping as I shot along the California coast. Next stop Kauai, but need to settle on my favored lens. I’m leaning strongly to either my Tokina 12-24 F4 or my Nikon 28-70 2.8 with a Tiffin Black Pro Mist Filter. Thanks for the nice review. You are just scratching the surface as the Fuji has the Nikon Creative Lighting capability built into it. Thanks for the suggestion of using the S5 to copy slides. I’m thinking Standard mode to keep it simple. BTW the camera manual PDF is available online for fee. Aloha!

I for one am yet to try a CCD sensor but I've heard a lot of praise for it. While I can't afford the halo'd Epson R-D1, I do intend to try a CCD one sometime. Really nice to see that Fuji had the idea for film sims way back when RUclips had barely started.

      As you can probably tell, I have an incredible soft spot and predilection for CCD sensors. One of the best and most affordable options I think is the Olympus E300. I made my first review about it and given it was my first, it is sorely lacking for how I'd like to review cameras but they can be found incredibly cheaply ($50 US with a lens) and produce some of my all-time favorite colors. I'd love to shoot the RD1 someday but I don't plan to purchase one so we'll see if the opportunity ever arises. Seems like an extraordinary experience though. Such a unique and beautiful body.

    It definitely takes practice to learn this camera- especially understanding the metering and the DR settings/output. It's all about Raw, and there is a massive amount of raw file latitude, more than any digital camera I've used to date. The metering is definitely finnicky, not like Nikon's matrix metering which is almost perfect. Nice video, glad to see someone give the S5 attention.

    I know, I'm late to the party :) - But this video made me look in the display cabinet with vintage stuff. And yay! I still got my old Nikon D200 - my first DSLR, bought around 2008. It turns out, that it sports a 10Mpix CCD sensor, that produces lovely raw files. I am having a blast shooting with this old camera with some old manual focus Nikkor lenses, that I bought with an analog Nikon SLR. Fun times :)
    And PS: They go for cheap. So even though the sensor in the D200 doesn't stack up to the Fujifilm one, it does provide quite a lot bang for your bucks.

The auto exposure is def a bit wonky tho, but the pics I took in less contrasty scenes turned out great. Tomorrow I'm gonna shoot it all manual and see how I do

    I have a little bit of trouble seeing the value in this camera honestly.
    If you take into account that it's based off the Nikon D200, and that those two camera are identical when it comes to autofocus, ergonomics and all of that, well the only difference is the sensor. In the S5 Pro, the sensor is really good, but as you said in your video, there is some metering issues
    The D200 on the other hand has a really nice 10MP CCD sensor, though with a smaller dynamic range as the S5 Pro (that was kind of the selling point of that camera) is still very good considering it's a camera from almost 20 years ago
    But the biggest thing for me is that the D200 sold en masse at the time, while the S5 Pro kinda flopped. Meaning you have two very similar cameras at two very different pricepoints. I can grab ad D200 in decent shape for like 75/100€ while for a S5 Pro I'd have to spend at the very least double that amount. For the Price of an S5 Pro, I could get a D700 which I would consider to be the better camera, no question about it (better colors in my opinion, reliable AF and metering, better DR and resolution. I haven't been avle to reproduce the output that the D700 does with any modern camera)
    So even though I'm a Fujifilm shooter and it's kind of a nice camera to own as it is their last DSLR, and it's a little quirky and special, I really fail to see the value of the S5 if we compare to equally good cameras of the time (like the aforementionned D200 and D700)

I don't use it for streets. A bit clunky for my style but I looooove the form factor of the s3! I owned the 1D classic and the s3 pro is like a mix between that body shape and regular dslr shape. I must add the s5 has the feel of the d300 which I've used before but the image of the d700 (and better) which I've also owned before. Love your reviews. Your photos with the Fuji S5 Pro seemed to have a similar look to those you took with the Oly Evolt E-300. Do you think that that is about the CCD sensors? I use my Oly E-1 to get that gorgeous right out of the camera look. I know what you mean about the Fuji sensor. I believe that eventually became their EXR sensors. I have a tiny Fujifilm Finepix F80EXR with this sensor. While I don't particularly like this camera as it was poorly thought out, the EXR sensor part works well to expand dynamic range. As I understand it the camera's sensor is really two twin sensors joined at the hip. One of them maximizes the blacks the other the whites and then automatically integrates them. Out comes a HDR photo without fooling with the tone curve or having to take multiple photos with the blurs that come with the fact that very few scenes stay exactly the same from shot to shot. What you pay for this is only half the resolution of the two "twins" combined.

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras
      @OneMonthTwoCameras  2 года назад +2

      Hi Robert! I would say there is definitely something in the CCD sensor that lends itself to this look which is the main reason I started seeking out these older cameras. I think you can probably get there with modern CMOS sensors but not as easily and not without extensive post work. The way things naturally come out of camera on these old CCD bodies is just absolutely wonderful and to me, you have the king of all the CCD cameras which is the Oly E1. I haven't reviewed it yet since I haven't drawn it from my box of cameras but I can't wait until it comes up because it is one of my favorite cameras of all time.
      I'm eager to learn more about the Fuji EXR capabilities and actually just bought a Fuji X10 for that very reason. Excited for when I draw and review that camera as well.

Aniway, is also almost useless. I like to shoot "in blind". 😁 I had the opportunity in 2008 when i buy this amazing camera, to grab instead a very new Nikon D300. But i was fascinated by the philosophy of this camera and the ideea that i shouldn't bother about loosing details in light (400% DR) was very attractive. Even now, i shoot like on film days because i dont push that button if it isn't worth it and the second reason is... i am in difficulty to choose from 1000 files instead 100. Despite the fact that i shoot even sport photography (so S mode), the majority of my pictures are maded in Aperture mode, because i like to control the DoF. I haven't used it myself but have read it is a solid performer. www.amazon.com/Nikon-18-55mm-3-5-5-6G-Vibration-Reduction/dp/B00HQ4W4PC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1493694327&sr=8-2&keywords=nikon+18-55mm&linkCode=ll1&tag=improvphotog-20&linkId=07a38236fcbbddb9bf827453f1f95478&language=en_US
      If you want to work with the discipline of a fast prime, I think a 50mm equivalent lens is always a solid way to start so this 35mm 1.8 is the way I would go. Yes! I have one and the first time I tried it, I was shocked. Being in Ghana and shooting mostly black skin, the rendition was awesome! Colours were beautiful. I also enjoy the 10D

    What camera did you record this video with! Looks amazing? is it the fx3?

      Thank you! This is shot with the lowly (but absolutely wonderful and a personal favorite for me) Olympus EM5iii from 2016 💅.

    Amazing review :) If you have the chance to try the 2011 Fujifilm X100, you will be amazed by the jpegs SOOC too...

      I had two of the X100S' late in the game and wow! The reds were just delicious. I may well pick one of the original X100s up to give it a try!

    May I ask you why do you set Adobe RGB color space if all social media and browsers use sRGB?

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras
      @OneMonthTwoCameras  2 года назад

      A very valid question. I do print these photos so it’s one less step plus I don’t really mind that the color output on digital is a bit flatter/less saturated. That said it’s worth calling out that nearly everyone would be better served with srgb so I’m going to adjust in the description.

    Do you prefer this camera or the Leica m9/m8?

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras
      @OneMonthTwoCameras  5 месяцев назад

      The M8/M9 are sharper (no AA filter), smaller and lighter so they would be my preference even if the S5 has better jpegs. But I don’t mind shooting raw with the leicas and post processing.

    I have it and with my nikkor 50 mm 1.8 it is a beast.

    Since we are talking Fujifilm, how about an XPRO-1. I have that "old" camera and love the images it makes.
