What's the point of the guitar

Being part of the groove and the full sound. There is a delicate cooperation between guitar and piano. During the time playing you hear the guitar playing on two and four with the hi-hat. Listen to Freddy Green with the Count Basie big band, doesn't get any better than that.

In this case the guitar and piano switch off (take turns) a lot with who's comping the chords. It gives it a different sound and adds some nice variety every few choruses or so.
