      Lightsaber Fighting Styles-
      Form VII: Juyo/Vaapad
Considered the most aggressive and unpredictable form and therefore the most controversial, it was a combat style with a history of the Jedi High Council forbidding it and later allowing only select users to practice the style.
The Juyo variant focused on aggressive assault and a mindset that drew upon anger and negative emotions to fuel relentless assault. This mindset caused many users to fall to the dark side of the Force or close to it.

In a movie that admittedly has quite a bit of poorly-delivered dialogue, that “I hate you” is kinda jarring. This whole scene where Anakin is burning is. They dont feel like they’re just reading off a script here like they do in a lot of the movie. Theres an actual sense of anger and hatred in Anakin, and an actual sense of sadness and regret in Obi Wan. They feel like real people here.

Watching this in the theater was the greatest cinematic experience of my life. I was blown away by the CGI, choreography, and the display of fighting skills of Ewan and Hayden. Everyone was on the edge of their seats waiting to find out how did Anakin become the masked Darth Vader. When Anakin’s legs got sliced off, the theater went dead quiet. We all had theories but no one saw that coming. And once Anakin burned, the crowd gasped in horror because it all came full-circle. Truly an experience of a lifetime and I’m truly grateful my Dad checked me out of school to take me there.

Looking back on things, it's easy to understand how terrified of the dark side Obi-Wan must have been, not in a sense of weakness but in a purely mental way. He was the first to duel a dark side user in hundreds of years and saw his master slain by him, he saw a highly intelligent man like Count Dooku fall to the dark side, Sidious successfully taking down the Jedi order and republic, and the snapshot at 6:45 seeing his brother, the most gifted Jedi in history completely taking over by evil. Obi-Wan really went through it.
Makes me remember his first line in Phantom Menace to Qui Gon " I have a bad feeling, its elsewhere, illusive". That was the force telling him to get ready buddy

Exactly. The dark side took everything from him. Everything he cared about - the master he idolised, the brother he adored, the love he cherished, the Jedi Order his home and the Republic his values were destroyed or corrupted by the dark side. By all right, he should feel despair, sadness and loss and be overcome by those emotions - other men fell to the dark side for less. And yet he endured through it all, keeping his faith in his principles despite his world crashing down upon him. Without him holding onto his hope and looking after Luke, the Galaxy would've stayed enslaved to the darkness. He is truly one of the greatest Jedi, a living embodiment of what all Jedi should aspire to be.

As a kid I always thought the “It’s over Anakin, I have the high ground!” line was pretty goofy since they never really mentioned anything about trying your best to gain the “high ground” and that it was strange that Obi-Wan was so certain of his victory because he was a few feet higher than Anakin. But if you look at what Anakin tried to do, you realize that he was trying to do to Kenobi what Kenobi had did to Darth Maul, the flip over him and slashing from behind. Being Kenobi’s apprentice, Anakin would’ve been fully cognizant of that technique because Kenobi would have certainly either taught him, or at the very least told him about what he did to defeat Maul. It also explains why Obi wan says “don’t try it” before Anakin lunges at him. He knew Anakin would’ve taken his advice on how to beat the guy who has the high ground, so he knew exactly what Anakin was going to do, hence why Anakin got absolutely trashed for trying such an obvious move that would leave him wide open. Anakin was so full of hubris thinking he was the most powerful force user to ever live and was convinced that his victory was a forgone conclusion, that he failed to realize that he was trying to use Kenobi’s own signature move on the guy that invented and taught him it, and not only that, but make it obvious to him that he’s going to do it.

Well said. Not only that, but just previously, Anakin tried the same move on Kenobi when bridging the gap to join him on the moving platform. He jumped over him. Obi barely missed Anakin’s legs and Anakin successfully managed to get onto the platform behind him.
This new gap was much wider to bridge, and had a terrain advantage of the high ground, which would make it harder for Anakin to clear Obi’s saber.

Obviously it is unrealistic to assume Obiwans words are true in a real world. But its not a real world its George Lukas vision and therefor logically flawed. Anakin couldve literally just walk towards Obiwan and avoid the highground. But then again he had plenty of opportunity before to throw Obiwan into the Lava. Like when Obiwan swung around on that lava river. Anakin couldve just cut the rope and Obiwan would be toast :D

Search into orthodoxy afterwards but first read this. Before you read these next things i want you to know that christianity isn’t about worshiping some deity in the sky because you dont want to go to hell, it’s about a loving and friendly relationship with God. God loves us soooo much no one can understand it. God wants you to tell Him everything, because He is soooo loving. Altough He knows it all He wants you to trust Him and be honest with Him and listen to Him. So now that i told you this read these Bible verses (the word of God) knowing that i’m telling you this out of love and i want you to know it’s not too late to turn and repent and follow Christ❤️❤️❤️ „Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 ESV Bible Repent from your sin (disobedience to God) and turn to God and follow Him so that you WILL be saved. „If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 ESV „No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” Luke 13:3 ESV „For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23 ESV

Every time I watch it, the entire fate of the galaxy flashes before my eyes. This is where the galaxy is, everything has fallen and become corrupted, and at the same time the galaxy’s two best defenders left in Kenobi and Yoda are trying to prevent the greatest evil and the fall of the greatest Jedi who ever lived. This movie is so epic and grand and the absolute best. Perfect Star Wars in every way. No lightsaber fight comes close. Going to Disney next week and when making my lightsaber I will choose the blue Kyber crystal and then go make sure I get all the colors, especially red to honor Anakin. Hayden Christensen is one of the best things about Star Wars and you can see in his portrayal that he truly was in a galaxy far far away.

Looking at this fight again, and watching how both of their styles impacted the battle, you can tell Obi-Wan was holding back because he still thought he can make Anakin sense into what he was doing, but when it became clear that Anakin wasn’t there anymore, he knew he had no choice, but to end it with him. Which led to be on chopping his legs and arm off. The sad thing is as Anakin was screaming Obi-Wan wanted to go help him, but he knew that there was no turning back at that point.

Obi wan wasn’t holding back at all, that’s just how form 3 works. defend until your opponent gives you the perfect opportunity to strike, not a moment before not a moment later. Vader was clearly much more powerful than obi wan at this point. holding back would’ve just got him killed…quickly lmfao. and ironically, anakin being so much stronger than obi wan was the entire reason for his demise. arrogance is the sith lord’s greatest weakness. if anyone was holding back in this duel, it was the very confused and conflicted young vader. He’s going against the man that practically raised him as his father figure. master Yoda already informed kenobi that the boy he trained was consumed by Darth Vader. no reason for him to hold back, he destroyed the jedi order and everything that his master stood for.

@@KetsaKunta but by calling ‘stoic virtue’ thus, are you not also making it an absolute by your metric then? My friend, this is no simple matter what we are about to discuss, and I feel my comment hardly scraped the surface of what I really meant behind it.
I understand very well that the point of the Jedi code (call it that, or Stoicism, or Daoism, or just ‘wisdom’ as I call it) is not to make an absolute, the stoic truths in fact reveal themselves to us whether we like them or not. Being in tune with them is not the same as dealing in absolutes. This seems a complex notion that is almost ineffable, as it appears paradoxical, but the crux is this: that which is true is not necessarily an absolute. If you meditate, write and focus attentively in your day-to-day, you’ll find that these truths can be revealed without words, but with focused, lived experience. Our language, in this case, forces us to express what appear as absolutes when what we are actually living is balance and equanimity. This is hard to achieve, of course, but that is why the Jedi way is the harder of the two. The whole point of the Sith code is that is brings quick rewards for little experience, while the fruits of the Jedi way are only revealed with enough time spent practicing and assimilating the way of Everything (the ‘Tao’) into one’s being. This is where the Jedi become remarkably similar to Daoists. Isn’t it beautiful?

    • @jazzman2516
      @jazzman2516 6 месяцев назад

@@KetsaKuntabut by referring to ‘Stoic virtue’ thusly, are you not then making an absolute of your own by your metric? My friend, this is a very, very deep discussion and I feel that my initial comment hardly scraped the surface of what I really meant behind it. Allow me to elaborate…
The stoic truths reveal themselves whether we like it or not, and do so every day. Being in accordance with these truths is not the same as affirming an absolute, as many truths in and of themselves are paradoxical. Example: it is true that existence probes many paradoxes for us humans. This sentence may appear an absolute, but it only appears this way because of its linguistic limitations. The grammar forces a conclusion (‘it is true that’), when the sentence breathes equanimity, balance, Yin and Yang, etc. To go full-cycle, we have now just proven the sentence to be true by offering up one of existence’s paradoxes. In this way, language shows itself to be a limiting factor in the expression of truth, but the meaning between the lines has revealed the truth to us nonetheless.
The key to it all is being at peace with paradox. This is the ‘harmony’ that the Jedi code advocates for. Harmony is not a one-sided word, it is neutral to its core. It is the word for ‘Everythingness’, our word for the ‘Tao’.
That which is true is not necessarily always an absolute, for the Universe itself is non-absolute in many ways. We have encountered the limitation of language in the describing of truth, and it is clear to me that realisation of truth therefore must come from living with an attentive, firmly focused and patient mind, just as Lao Tzu, Epictetus, and many wise men to this day (most notably, Sadhguru in my opinion) advocate. It is not enough to want to seize truth verbally, in ‘thinking’, as this is always going to be futile. Instead, we must assimilate it into our ‘being’. This is actually the Jedi way, as it is the Stoic, Taoist, Yogic, and so on. I prefer to call it ‘wise’, as ‘isms’ are irksome and constrain our view.

So Obi-Wan just had to hold out long enough for Anakin to start making mistakes, find a spot that gave him a strategic advantage, then make one calculated strike to defeat his opponent. Yes, both were very powerful, but Anakin lacked Obi-Wan’s patience and discipline, which cost him the victory.

Anakin's story is a tragedy...every time I watch I don't believe he is going to turn. Then you watch the events unfold that lead to his turn to the dark side, and you feel the confusion and sadness in him...slowly watching him becoming the betrayer. The dialogue between Anakin and Obi Wan is iconic, one quote that sticks out to me is, "your anger and your lust for power have already done that". Anakin believes the only way to save his love is to gain power at any cost, which leads to his betrayal of the Jedi, all at the cost to save Padma, but for the cost of his new powers he loses his lover forever...a true tragedy.

4:50 I love this part. The battle of the heroes theme has been developing throughout the entire fight until it reaches its final version with the choir and all the instruments. It is the moment where Anakin is truly lost. Obi Wan and Anakin are not just fighting each other at this point, they are fighting to survive the catastrophic failure of this facility. But Anakin doesn't care. He doesn't care that they might both die from the environment, he only cares about killing his former master. His rage clouds his mind completely. For anyone who thinks that this fight should have been shorter I will tell you the obvious. This fights tells a story which is just as important as showing the space battle at the end of a new hope.

in the novel, Obi wan claims something along the lines of "killing him would have been the merciful thing to do. I wasn't feeling merciful."
I don't remember what exactly the line or the context was but basically his choice to let anakin burn alive was a mixture between letting him go because he was too far lost, and also that he had lost any empathy for what Anakin Skywalker was (now Darth Vader.)

@@hobomike6935 I've heard tell of people saying it was because Obi-Wan could sense Palpatine on approach, knew he couldn't defeat him, and had to get himself and Padme out of there.
In the quote you shared, Obi-Wan talks about "not feeling merciful". Sort of makes it sound like he gave into some of his own dark impulses. Doesn't fit with my read of his character, but, it would be ironically fitting that this dark side moment would only cultivate more darkness.

A lot of people love to criticize the dialogue in this fight (“only a sith deals in absolutes” being an absolute itself, “from my point of view the Jedi are evil,” etc.) but upon closer inspection it actually serves an overarching theme of the prequels really well: we live in a world where everything has to be right and wrong, black and white, with no room for nuance or any sort of gray area, and it’s largely because of how people refuse to get out of the rut that history has left the political world in. Anakin turned on the Jedi because of how dogmatic they’d become, but what exactly he turned TO was just as, if not more, dogmatic. He literally relishes in his forthcoming “new EMPIRE” while fully believing that it’s the solution to the Jedi’s problems of being too strict in the agendas they push. Both Anakin and Obi-Wan think they’re right and the other person is in the wrong, but one big lesson of the prequels is that it’s never that simple. Both the Jedi and the Sith are very wrong at this point in time, in that, much like with the real world, instead of coming together to find solidarity in one another and work towards viable solutions to the galaxy’s problems, they fight for what they believe is right and tear down and chastise anything else as sacrilege. So while yes, some of this dialogue sounds pretty dumb at a surface level, the amount of hypocrisy it conveys on the part of both the Jedi and the Sith is pure brilliance. Thank you for coming to my overlong comment I love swooshy shooty space movies
