He was never good by his own admission. He was a good song arranger with James. And he had the business connections and sense to allow Metallica to be successful
I might be alone on this but Four Horsemen sounds fucking amazing played like this... More so than usual. This whole performance is great. Not to mention James' mullet.
1. Ride The Lightning 2. No Remorse 3. Hit The Lights 4. The Four Horsemen 5. Phantom Lord (FUCK YEAH!!!) 6. Fight Fire With Fire 7. Ride The Lightning One of the best medlys ever.
That was the band that could (almost) do no wrong. Everything past this moment has turned into "Lars, James&friends", but never really Metallica. In the end money and fame, and of course Lars' desire to steer everyone towards a different "artistic expression" killed their Mojo. Yes, they had some fun and cool songs here and there and definitely some pretty cool shows afterwards and over the years, but they were never the same, and never have been since. They have been trying for a long time now to somehow recapture what they lost.. but never really did. They've completely wasted the second part of their younger years...And for what? Such a shame! But I'm happy this recording exists. Thanks so much for posting it.
i love fucking love phantom lord kirk didnt overload the wah here and the solos sound fucking magnificent and LARS RIPS UP THAT DOUBLE BASS!!!! I FUCKING LOVE METALLICA and commented twice?
I WAS THERE!! this was actually one of the very first shows I've seen. Fuckin aweseome. thank you for posting this. Is there a complete bootleg of this? thanx
Polls are very fickle when it comes to this sort of thing. Kirk Hammett was the 'world's best guitar player' back in about 1987 - it just depends on the band's popularity. About a year or two later it was Slash. But then again, Lars, is not what I'd class as a legendary drummer either.
The four horsemen at that speed is the heaviest thing I've ever heard
the sound of the Black Album, heavy and groovy
Fucking Jason's backing vocals fucking rule!
