  • Hanukkah is a special holiday celebrated by Jewish people every year. It lasts for eight days and is sometimes called the Festival of Lights. Hanukkah celebrates a miracle that happened a long, long time ago when a group of Jewish fighters, called the Maccabees, won a big battle to protect their religion and their special place called the Temple.
When they went to clean up the Temple, they found only a tiny bit of oil to light the menorah, a special candle holder. Even though there was only enough oil for one day, it lasted for eight whole days! That's why we celebrate Hanukkah for eight days.
During Hanukkah, families light the menorah, adding one candle each night until all eight candles are lit. They also play games with a spinning top called a dreidel, give each other presents, and eat yummy foods fried in oil, like potato pancakes called latkes and jelly-filled doughnuts called sufganiyot. Hanukkah is a fun time to be with family and remember the amazing miracle that happened long ago.
