Best display of musicianship I’ve ever seen and quite simply the best arrangement of a song I’ve ever heard. I go back with this song to around 1962 when I heard Joan Baez and then Pete Seeger do it (I was 12 and my older sister brought home records). The song goes back to the early 1900s when it was recorded by (I think) Alan Lomax of a woman (Dink) washing clothes on the banks of some river in Texas.
The most recent round of the MacArthur Genius Grant. That aside, though others might be able to imitate him, it's his combination of technical skill (unrivaled), writing prowess, and ability to push the boundaries of the instrument he works with like no others playing today that make him the best in the world at the moment. Plus, he can sing :)
This song is so beautiful!! I like this cover of it, too: Fare Thee Well (Dink's Song) - cover by Devon Graves (by Mumford & Isaac, "Inside Llewyn Davis" OST)
If it's the brand I seem to recognize the Martin logo on the head. If it's the shape, this is a parlor guitar, it just has a smaller body than usual, and is mostly played by acoustic blues & folk players, but also other traditionnal styles (dances & so on) Something long those lines I guess :)
Perhaps when you're sitting at home watching on your phone. Being there is yet another thing. I think the reaction is organic to the space and virtuosity displayed.
Beautiful! Marcus Mumford is Always Amazing!

This is tear jerkingly beautiful.
That's Chris Thile, the best mandolinist in the world. Literally. He won $500,000 for being a genius in it.
This... is the best. Punch Brothers + Mumford.
What's amazing here is that every solo is entirely different from what they have done before with this same song. True musicians never are satisfied.
Did you ever hear a more moving banjo solo? The musical ability displayed here is awe inspiring.
OMG my new favorite song
So excited for 'Inside Llewyn Davis'. This song/album is going to be a hit
Kids on TikTok doing the dink

Haha thanks, pal.
Thanks for sharing this. Such an impressive group of musicians, and my new favorite video on RUclips. Beautiful.

Their talent>>>
Fuck, thats a great version. Really good.
It's gonna win best picture
I want this version! Couldn't even find it in iTunes.
Appears to be a 1929-1939 model Martin. Don't know the exact model. It's possible that it is a Martin made for Ditson Dept. stores, early 1930's era.
What does marcus say that makes everyone lauhgh?!!!
Gött!
Bob Dylan was meant to write this song, but Marcus Mumford was meant to sing it. Completely outstanding
Dylan didn't write it
what is that like a pizzacotto banjo effect at 330?? if so, nice
Bob Dylan did not write this song!!! It was first done in 1908 way before Dylan was even born
Is this song on itunes?? I couldn't find it under "Dinks Song."
@TheMandolineer Haha.. That would be brilliant! :D
Being a man, I share an equally strong attraction to Mumford as you, just not the ovary-hurting kind!
the single does? Is it off the soundtrack? Thanks for the info!
I know. :-/ It hurts the ovaries sometimes.
was this in shepherd's bush, london?
Yeah I don't see those dislikes either..
at 4:00, the steel mandolinist looks right at your camera!
Anyone know what the joke was in the first minute of this video?
Does anyone know what type of guitar Mumford is using here? I've been looking for a guitar similar to that for ages.

Yea, I assumed it was a Martin. I mean the "parlor" (i think) size of it is what I'm interested in, and what model that is, or ones like it.
Dakota Davis I know Jake Bugg has the same kind
Dakota Davis I know Jake Bugg has the same kind
You should be able to get a Sigma parlour for around £400, if his is a vintage martin it probably worth £5k+
anybody know what guitar he marcus is playing
yeah..?
Can anyone confirm if this was in the movie Don Jon?
It was in the movie Inside Llewyn Davis.
It's a Bob Dylan Song from the album No Direction Home.
what are the chords to this song and tune
