At last! I've found your video explaining the mahjong style that I was taught years ago. I've watched endless "American Style Mahjong" videos that haven't made any sense to me. My Mahong friends' tiles didn't include jokers nor playing cards. ??? I can't ask my friends for help now because they have all passed away. I have an opportunity to start playing again with neighbors who want to learn Mahjong; however, I can't remember how to play much less how to teach them. Alls I can remember is that Shirley, the lady who taught me, told me that she learned the "US Navy Wives" version that the Navy wives played when deployed out of the US. She never told us that this was one and the same as the Hong Kong style. Thanks so much, Mahjong Sparrow!
I’ve watched many MJ beginner basic tutorial videos and you one is the most well explained! Now I need to look for one that explains dealers and winds.
This will be my must share YT clip to lure more of my foreign friends to learn Mahjong 😂😂😂 more “water fishes” for me LMAO Just kidding. Love how you’ve summarized such a complex game within 10mins. Looking forward to your next clips 💪🏻
Yeah, this is a great teaching video. Do you have any playthrough videos with this form of Mahjong? I want to learn this ruleset and feel that watching an actual game being played would only further my understanding. Thank you!
Hi, thanks so much! I actually bought this hand-crafted set in Mong Kok, HK. Not from the extremely expensive place that has a 9-month waitlist, but just off the street corner. If you have a chance to visit, I would definitely recommend checking them out (maps.app.goo.gl/iiNVhpuRqmbsYvbU8)
Depending on where you live, I recommend checking out your local Chinatown, especially their so-called "99c" stores. If not, check out the Amazon links I put in the description. Hope this helps!
@@MahjongSparrow in the case i take the flower to the wall? what happend there, i mean, i will take 2 tiles? Because if i take the flower to wall, is the same to take a normal tile in my turn, so what happend in this case, thanks
Technically there is no one "traditional" mahjong. The most pervasive mahjong styles played are HK style and Japanese style (known as Riichi). Riichi is more strategic and therefore is used more in competitions, whereas HK style is a tad more casual and thus played more for fun or gambling.
I just learned to play Mahjong from a friend today and it was so fun! We struggled with the setup mechanics so this was super helpful! Btw, I've heard some sets (or at least my friend's 😅) may not come with flower tiles. Is that unusual? Does that change the setup mechanic or any other aspect of the game? Thanks in advance! 🙏🏾
The flower tiles definitely add another dimension to the game, but some families (including my own) prefer not playing with flowers, as they feel they are too "luck-dependent". If you want to play the game in the truest sense, I would incorporate the flower tiles, otherwise you would lose one more way you could score points.
So, it seems the style I grew up playing is basically Hong Kong style. The major difference is that we always only had one tile facing up in the discard pile. When we discard one tile we turn the previously discarded one face down. This forces you to try to remember what tiles have been discarded and it can be a bit challenging if you play multiple games in a row... xD
hong kong basic is so much more simple than riichi, I've gotta remember under the river, big 3 dragons, and the titular riichi to even sit down in a japanese style game, not to mention scoring.
Wow! How did he make this super complicated game so clear? Also........ngl this man has a PLEASANT voice 👀- more videos please!
well, I think if he went into yaku, closed/open hands, and the prevailing/personal wind the video would be more comprehensive, but also 3 hours long
Thank you, as a Riichi player this video was helpful in learning the differences between Japanese (Riichi) and Hong Kong rules!
Yes, I have a few friends who are very keen on Riichi, I am planning to learn this style this year and may make a video on it in the future

Hands down the best mahjong tutorial I have seen. Thank you Mahjong Sparrow!

Great video! One suggestion would be to use an American mahjong set where the numbers for the cracks and names of the winds are shown.
Doesn't have to be an american set -- you can find labelled chinese sets if you look around. My first set was a chinese set and was labelled.
Love the tissot prx youre wearing
Thanks so much! It's the closest I'll ever get to a Royal Oak lmao
So simple, an abg could learn!
Looking forward to more content related to fan for fan 3 minimum tables.

Have any recommendations for a mahjong table? Or just get a card table and junk mat?

i have a question, so when you have a flower, you will take one more tiles, but to the end of the wall, right? of the gong too right?
Yes exactly, you draw a tile from the end of the walls only when you draw a flower or when you Gong.

So what's a yaku?
I am a Chinese, and I would like to know if foreigners are also very focused on playing mahjong?
There are many variants of mahjong, including an American version, so yes, quite a diversity of people play this great game!
