Great review ! I've got a fathom 2 2020 in L frame - I loved the color and it was available. I've got the bike now a year and I absolute love it ! I upgraded the saddle, fitted Nukeproof handlebars and put some nice VAULT pedals on. I dislike the lose bearing rear instead of thru axles, but this wasn't an option at the time anyway. I appreciate the Fathom 1 had better forks and brakes, but what I've got is plenty good enough for me (and again I love the color) . I think people get overly critic on specs. I had no problem with the SRAM Groupset so far, but if it comes to it, I will simply upgrade the derailleur to an NX. I am absolute happy with my choice, as this is a very capable bike, which my skills won't match ! Unlike some people with "all the gear - no idea"
I was thinking maybe I should ask you about 2020Fathom and 2021Fathom a few days ago and then today I saw your video...loool...you always good, love your channel
monzx3 I love it! No complaints whatsoever. It’s actually my very first mountain bike, so I don’t have much to compare it to, but it’s been great so far. I think all the rockhoppers are great!
I had that 2020 fathom 2 29, i swap the fork to santour axon 34, 650b wheelset lace with maxxis recon+2.8 and trade the sx to slx 2x11 speed slx/xt gearing/brake set and giant dropper post. Great bike though the rear end is qr.
I'm using the 2021 Fathom 1 29" in Sage. First bike I've owned and it's been great for an entry level rider. It is well built and smooth on the trail, very appropriate for a beginner who wants to concerntrate on developing skills and fitness. Reasonably priced for the features.
In the fathom 1 vs 2 series the hubs are giant performance tracker (fathom 1 series) vs Shimano basic hubs in fathom 2 series. Apparently the giant performance tracker hubs are better and made like dt Swiss? Also nicer sound
Hey brother I am a new subscriber you seem to do amazing informational videos on bikes and I need your opinion please. I’m ready to put a deposit on either a 2021 trek Roscoe 7 or a 2021 giant phantom 2 27.5. I just can’t seem to find enough information on the fork of the giant if it’s a solo air or not. I do like the overall look of the Roscoe but the 130 mm travel suspension on the giant is appealing to me since Heavier set person at 6’2 280lbs. What do you think.
Thank you! That's a tough one. I've heard other commenters say that they saw the fathom 2 with the coil fork, and the air fork is just a mistake. I'm not 100% sure though. Air forks are generally more adjustable for your weight, but the Judy on the Roscoe 7 has the same psi setting for any weight above 200lbs. Test riding one would probably be the best way to tell if the fork is going to hold up, though I know it's hard to find a bike these days. I know the max weight limit on the roscoe is 300lbs so I think it should be ok, but the best way is still to find one if possible.
@@TalalipopMTB thank you very much brother. Ima going to take the chance on the roscoe there’s literally nothing nowhere to test ride. Not much info on the phantom 2. Great detailed videos seriously I was between 5 different bikes. With all the info on your videos ima go with the roscoe. Thanks buddy
@@MtbEMS I ended up going with the trek. The giant didn’t have much info at the time and dealers had no idea when it was coming in and even the guys at the dealers lacked information also
Thanks, sucks that the Fathom joins list of bikes not offering 27.5 in M-for the majority of casual riders in this key size, control beats saving a couple of seconds in a race but the industry is trying to push us to a standard for optimising their profit.
Giant doesn't list weights of their bikes so unfortunately not. Hopefully some other people will just weigh them and give that information, but it probably will vary a bit from bike to bike anyways.
@@TalalipopMTB Duel Sport 3 is 930$ bike What FX bike would be equal to the price. if Wanted to Swap for FX bike which is closest to 930$ or few hundred more
350 more gets nx rear derailleur vs deore shadow. Mt420 vs tektro tdk143 front brakes. Dub bottom bracket. Doesn't seem like much. Compare feature exists on giant website. What say you?
They're honestly pretty similar in terms of stopping power, but just have a slightly different feel based on the shift lever and definitely look a bit different. Shimano is just the more popular name brand so it should be more reliable and last longer, but I personally don't think it should make or break a decision on a bike.
I live in the UK and my Fathom 1 2021 has been supplied with RockShox. Happy to answer any more questions you have. It is a decent bike for the price in my opinion, but most importantly, it is a fabulous colour.
@@davidbush284 Thanks for getting back to me, it is a nice colour the teal, I decided with the Fathom 2 29er in the end & mine came with SR suntour raidons, I love the bike also
go with specialized or Giant. the Trek isn't bad but trek is definitely the worst budget brand. Personally I'd go with Giant, their house suspension is amazing but the specialized is great too.
Can’t really compare brands as they all have different tiers and types of bikes. Can compare models though. For example, Trek Xcalibur is similar to the Fathom 2
You looking for a trail hardtail or CX hardtail? If you go with the fathom you get more aggressive geo so more fun, if you Xtc slr you get to wear spandex and suffer with all that climbing, but I guess it’s good cardio
You don't check the most important thing between the bikes the geometry of 2021 is complete different from 2020 the new geo is much more modern and should ride totally different from the old one
Update to video: The prices of the 2021 Fathom bikes in the U.S. have increased:
Fathom 2: $1,380
Fathom 1: $1,730
2021 Fathom 1 27.5 and 29ers here in guam are way cheaper than the pricings you showed here. Probably because my LBS gets it directly from Taiwan.
So the 2020 fathom all had quick release on their frames and the new 2021 fathom frames all have thru axle frames. That’s a major upgrade.
The fork is a big upgrade as well
And better geo.
Thru axles alone are enough to make me choose this over a Roscoe.
Love your videos, no doubt you will go massive.
Major upgrades, I feel bad for whoever bought the 2020.
I had a 2020 but luckily I was able to sell it without losing any money.
Yeah me... Feel like every single thing is improved and what i was looking for in a bike
I just bought the 2021 Fathom 1 27.5. (Teal)
Such a sweet bike. These fathoms are nice bikes.

How are you liking your Rockhopper? I was able to get a Base Rockhopper back in August and it's been rock solid on the trails.

What size grips can I put on the fathom 2 2021? Any suggestions on what brand?
Great video wish I had this video months ago. I am a subscriber now really informative. I upgraded to the Specialized Status 160.
Thank you!
I can't fathom why you'd get the 1 over the 2. I am getting the 2 29er and adding 4 pot SLX brakes.
Great video! One suggestion: I think for geo u should switch it to millimeters instead of inches.
Thank you! And yes I’ll do that in my next one!

For Cross Country, what other models does this model compete with?
Bought the fathom 2 29er, so far it’s been a great bike but the chain keeps falling off which is a bummer

Are you sure that the frame is the same for both 29 and 27.5?
My LBS owner told me that his Giant dealer rep assured him that they were different frames for the 2021 29 vs 27.5 ?
I bought Duel SPort 3 yet was advised if want to do racing invest in FXsport 6.. 75% road 25% trail.
FX definitely is faster as it is closer to a road bike compared to the dual sport, which is closer to a mountain bike in terms of its features.
