So many new players have the experience of doing something like dumping CON and then regretting it, or making a generic caster and trying to walk into melee. Recommended options help those new players without taking anything from a veteran who wants a unique build.

the worry with monster families is that, depending on how pervasive they are, it actually could indicate a reduction in the variety of monsters. if we go from 300 to 500 monsters but all of the extra 200 are variations of the 300...thats fine, we didn't lose anything. but if we actually only have 200 monsters and the remaining 300 are just the 2+ variations of each of them then we've actually lost some variety.
But i do generally like the idea of monsters families, similar to how dragons were in...i think the original printing?

I suspect that decision came down to making it easier for DMs who are running campaigns in settings where artificers aren't a class option, including the many home versions of the Forgotten Realms where they are mistakenly or deliberately left out.
For the record, Artificers are canon Forgotten Realms and have been a long time. But there is a persistent myth that they don't exist in the Realms or that they _shouldn't_ exist because they (it is ignorantly claimed) "don't fit" the setting.
I wish they were in the PHB. But as this is supposed to be more setting-agnostic, I guess I get why they'd leave it for the coming settings books.
-Or, they feel like they need more time to get the artificer class _right_ for the redesigned system. Maybe they've redesigned many of the magic items and want to see how they play at our tables before rebalancing the Artificer.

    • @CivilWarMan
      @CivilWarMan Месяц назад +2

While I would have also liked to have seen an updated Artificer, particularly since they already have 4 subclasses and Alchemist could use a bit of love, I can kind of see why it ended up being the odd class out. Of the official classes, it is the one that is the most setting specific.
I mean, you can theoretically come up with any setting that would make one or more of the official classes not fit. Wizards and Sorcerers would not fit in very low magic settings. Clerics might not fit in a homebrew setting where gods don't exist. Even seemingly ubiquitous classes like Fighters and Rogues might be out of place in a homebrew world where magic is so pervasive that literally everyone is a spellcaster. Artificers, though, have a very specific magitech vibe, usually leaning towards steampunk or clockpunk, which usually requires a world with at least a Renaissance-level aesthetic in order to not clash with the setting, and those kinds of settings are less common, at least in the official materials.

Followers of Gond, the Imaskar, High Imaskar (which only fell like 4-5 years before BG3 takes place), and Deep Imaskar, which is still around (though reclusive). Some of the Netherese, too, are still around in the 5e era, according to Ed Greenwood.
The fact that Lantan is _back_ from Abeir and even more advanced technologically than when they left - though we don't yet have a book on them.
Spelljamming also brings artificery to Faerûn, and we have a bunch of Spelljammer content in 5e canonically venturing to Toril, both in Adventurers' League and in the more recent books.
It's a myth that Artificers "don't fit" in Faerûn canonically. The confusion boils down to the fact that WotC didn't get around to publishing the class for 5e until the Eberron book.
And a _ton_ of people only know Forgotten Realms lore from the 5e books.

The crafting and tools are what I'm looking forward to most from this new info. I've got an artificer that I want to flesh out in the 2024 context, so getting these details will be very useful while I wait for a potential updated artificer in the future. I may not know which of the new spells said artificer will have access to (or class feature changes), but at least I can get him setup with everything else, and have a potentially more flavorful character.
For tools, I hope they include a more detailed description of what comes in each tool kit, and if there are new artisan tools, I may even swap what tools my artificer uses. For crafting, I hope the process is streamlined enough that I won't need massive downtime for one item. I'd like to make at least a few magic items to not waste infusion slots. And hopefully common magic items can be whipped up in a day or two, since I enjoy the flavor of handing out mundane items like that as an artificer, to make up for if I end up hoarding my infusions.
New feats will also aid in this, but as other comments have said, it's looking like we've seen all but one of the feats already (unless epic boons go to the DMG, opening up 16 more spots).

This sounds really promising. I was worried it would mostly be a combo of Tasha’s, original phb, and xanathars, without actually having much new with most just being fixes for stuff that was op, but it sounds like it’s actually new. For feats for instance I was worried it would just be copied and pasted from those books (the feats in all 3 totals to 72 so 75 could easily be just those feats + a couple things for new stuff like weapon masteries) and a couple options that were abused like gwm and crossbow expert being changed by not new overall, but it sounds like that’s not the case. Also it sounds like they’re making an effort to both make the books better designed and have all the stuff that isn’t super clear or fleshed out, like tools.
Excited to see it because this sounds very promising and like they’re making a good effort to offer something that’s actually a significant improvement in quality while preserving what people love about the game

There will be the Background feats available from level 1, the traditional feats with a prerequisite of level 4+ so they can't be taken at character creation, and maybe epic boons for level 20 characters. Though I could also see the epic boons being shunted off to the DMG since they would be considered a more optional rule due to them not being relevant until the highest of high tier play.

Personally I liked the first iteration of the ardling and thought it was close to what I'd like ideally.
The aasimar to me are rather boring, don't like the name either, and with the UA tiefling I was hoping the ardling would be its mirror. The tiefling has abyssal (demonic), chthonic (underworld/dead), and infernal (devil). Practically all that you could want to make a lower planes character.
So the ardling would offer three unique and interesting legacies: the beautiful/glowy angelic/nike people (aasimar), the animal human hybrids, and some other exotic legacy.
For the third legacy I like the idea of beings of light encased (some partially, others not at all) in animated statues. But other ideas would work too.
Any complaints about "furries" with the ardling or saying it would only fit in an ancient egyptian setting are missing the fact that animals and animal human hybrids as divine entities are in almost every religion. Even chrisitianity had it.

I am sure it is some corporate suit that gets to make the final decision, hopefully Jeremy and Chris fought hard to make this the best version yet. I started playing in 1983 and while 1e AD&D will always hold a special place in my heart, I do believe 5e is the best edition so far so editing it instead of starting from scratch was probably the best choice they could make. Guess we will have to wait and see.

The enchanter or even the blacksmith improving your weapons is an artificer.

The playtest did show feats as having level pre-requisites, at least for levels 1 and 4. And if you include all feats from all official sourcebooks there are already way more than 75 feats. I imagine the new PHB will be consolidating a lot of the non-setting-specific feats that are spread across multiple books. I would be surprised to see a lot of NEW feats.

Whenever art is flashed on screen 80% of the time i recognize it from Magic. There are like over 25,000 unique card if you count reprints that’s like almost 50k. Each card needs art but I couldn’t tell you how many of those cards have unique art but there is a VAST amount of card art. Several times a card gets reprinted for a different set and they need the next reprint to have different lightning bolt art or what have you.
It just tickles me to no end when I see the art used and know where it comes from. Now the new books will have art it’ll be more difficult to tell.

I suspect the reason we're seeing 75 feats is that WotC is likely porting many of the feats from TCE and XGE (probably with tweaks, I don't expect the racial/species ones to make it as is). As you pointed out, all the feats from PHB, XGE, and TCE makes 72.

    • @CivilWarMan
      @CivilWarMan Месяц назад +1

There's almost certainly going to be quite a bit of that, much in the way that the Summon spells from Tasha's are getting ported into the new PHB. And there are many reasons for that, including 1) making sure cool feats from XGE and TCE are available to all players without them having to buy the older books, 2) rebalancing them to buff weak feats, nerf overpowered or easily exploited feats, or redesign them to interact with newer mechanics like weapon masteries, and 3) adding a level 4+ prerequisite so players can't try to exploit the lack of prerequisites in the older books to justify taking, say, Fey Touched as their "background" feat.

Especially the DMG which left a lot to be desired as a new DM with no experience and nothing to really go off of in terms of what a DM should do. When I started wanting to DM and I read through the DMG and it starts with "How to build a WORLD" before anything else, I was lost and the rest of it didn't help much either. I needed to be told step-by-step what to do mechanically for running various things and how to prep aside from to vaguely narrate and referee. Reading through older D&D books like BX, many 3rd party materials, and listening to RUclipsrs has helped me a lot more to become a DM than the official books.

As a newer player, no crafting system was really lacking. I hope if you play in forgotten Relams this allows you to craft say a
    Holy Hammer (Warhammer)
+1 to attack damage Damage: 1d8 Bludgeoning (1d10 versitile) +1d8 Radiant on hit; (perhaps if rolled well also has bonus damage vs Undead and/or Fiends and/or Evil Aligned characters)
to Craft: Maybe takes a 500 gp Diamond and has done heroic deeds and 5000 gp cost to imbue and a town like Waterdeep or Silverymoon would have the Cleric of sufficient level available.
simple to the point, not as much damage as Flametounge or Frost hammer and no other properties, should be a good level 9ish weapon when your Paladin has thousands of Gold to spend. Seems like a fair Rare type level item.
And you could have other ideas (Ruby for Fire, Sapphire for Cold, Topaz for Lightning, Obsidian for Necrotic, etc) and could be Wizards/Socererrs or Artificers could do those.

Hoped they would add the Fizbans Treasury of Dragons 3 distinct sub-species of Dragonborn: Chromatic, Gem and Metallic. I know Fizbans sourcebook is " recent " but you could have added these alongside the new improved mixed- sub specie standard dragonborn. Mixed in that they mostly had VERY few scale colors ( brown, red, silver ) and had an odd mix of chromatic and metallic dragon ancestry dragon species.
    ++
And odd, WotC didnt include Gem dragon ancestries for Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer in the Fizban source book and that and Gem dragonborns in the new 5e Player handbook! Again, I know Fizban Treasury of Dragons is a recent and presumably compatible book with 5e24 but still
LASTLY regarding Dragons. BRACE yourself for a wall of text! Grab a drink! 😂
Truly hope you add Gem dragons to this enriched Monster Manual since it has som many new extra monsters in it.
Maybe extra 5 true dragon groups of each family too ( Chromatic, Gem, Metallic, misc ) Bloat excuse is pathetic. As long as each dragon is unique and behave distinctly, have good origin story and neat quirks. Its dungeons and DRAGONS.
So my dragon obsessed wishlist?? Including from all editions and newest Fizban Treasury of Dragons:
True dragons means a Dragon have pair of wings and 4 legs. Wyvern have 2 less legs and drakes are basically wingless dragons, wyrms are snake like dragons.
    Chromatic:
1st group of 5 true main: Red, Blue, Green, Black, White
2nd group of 5 true main: Purple, Orange, Grey, Yellow, Brown
Purple ( two kinds. The Middle Underdark ones from 3e/ 4 e and Lloyds presumabye Upper Underdark purple that burrow into the surface at night to hunt prey on open fields and small towns etc. Could be renamed Umber/ Violet etc. All 3 have energy to plasmatic breath and share intrigue, knowledge hoarders )
Orange ( live in jungles, in feuds with Greens and Blacks due to territory overlap sometimes. Spew sodium choloride that combust prey in flames in air. In water it explodes them )
Grey ( mercenary like dragons, purely physical attacks, ditch acid bite )
Yellow ( the first Lloyd iteration, WINGED ( or else NOT a dragon! ) and NOT sand dwelling like in later 2e edition/ those should be retconned as beige dragons, spew sodium concentrated water to blind prey, are the smallest, fastest though not neccesarily the weakest )
Brown ( sand, desert dragons. Have modified wings to better " swim " thorugh sand and have head to crush, burrow through hard rock, fewds with Blue dragons fro territory )
    Gemstone:
1st group of 5 true main: Amethyst ( royal, sharp purple) , Sapphire ( deep blue ), Emerald ( fresh green ), Topaz ( orange with yellow tint ), Crystal ( clear, shiny white to dirty brown )
2nd group of 5 true main: Diamond (my idea not official ), Obsidian ( cast out by the above 5 Gem dragon Thanes of Sardior ) , Ruby ( direct offspring of Sardior ), Citrine ( shiny yellow ), Opal ( many coloroed, if not prismatic, contain every colors set in different patterns )
    Metallic:
1st group of 5 true main: Gold, Silver, Bronze, Copper, Brass ( Brass should be retconned to spew poison, thye say posion is " evil ", then what about acid? Depends on usage I say )
2nd group of 5 true main: Orium, Mithral, Adamantine, Tin, Zinc. Last two my ideas becasue to get bronze and brass by mixing Copper + tin/ zinc ) Dosent have to be interbreeding, just stating cohesivness and that Bahamut, like Tiamat can just spawn those kind of dragons even though in real life sense those colors and metals would be products of mixing,
Examples of Miscellanious/ cousin dragons, not aligned/ neutral. NOT including Ferrous, elemental dragons, cataclysmic ones etc
Chromatic: Deep dragon ( cousin, NOT purple! live in Lower Underdark )
    Gemstone: Jade
    Metallic: Steel
