    I have played so many characters with a warlock dip, whether for flavor or mechanics, but I’ve never been able to play a 100% warlock because the mechanics have always fell short. I have always needed something like storm cleric or stone sorcerer to get the robustness and versatility of my intended design.
    These changes make it sound like I will finally be able to play a pure warlock. Kudos to WOTC on this one.

    My big issue is POWER CREEP. The new design seems to based more on Theatrics and flavor. We all know that levels 8+ are where the real fun starts. Get new powers, new tools to get in/out of situations. Then by level 15+ the characters start becoming 4-5 walking Demi-Gods. We won't know until we play, but it seems that the walking Demi-God mode may start sooner. (Level 10)

      I could definitely see this becoming very strong and with nerf to paladin, the threshold to be as good or better has been lowered so much. If warlock gained the haste spell I would certainly head for fighter. Considering the subclasses though I could see eldritch knights new features synergizing with warlock. Especially if pact of the blade still gets the level 11 extra extra attack invocation. It'll be a very spicy 🌶🌶🌶🔥multiclass that'll ?''outshine''? everyone else. I would be drawn to celestial for the extra hp sustain and because I don't like being dependent on others in case they fail/RNG has gained a sense of humor and wants to prank you. It's all about the redundancies, so I won't be THE HEALER, I will be sure to have at least some healing/sustain options.

  • @bettanysapothecary
    @bettanysapothecary 3 месяца назад

    I'm...not all that bothered - there's some improvement sure, but if you're not going to give us more spell slots then we needed more cantrips - Warlock works by laying down Concentration area of effect spells then slinging cantrips (with or without blade action!). This is also why I'm not hugely thrilled by the Pact of the Fey - while thematically it's still great, it relies on spell slots that aren't there to waste - great! you can misty step with cool extras at later levels when you cast Enchantment or Illusion spells? But how often are you wasting a precious spell slot on one of those? Certainly a few Illusion spells, ok yes, but it's not nearly as strong as it sounds at first.
    What's going to happen is we'll end up chasing Feats (everyone gets a Background feat now, the temptation will be to take Variant Human to get an extra feat there) to get more spells that way (as if we don't already).
    Making the Pact boons Invocations is interesting, and part of me feels avaricious and wants to collect them all...but another part of me feels that it muddies the theming...maybe I'm just being awkward there.
    I do think that Improved Pact Weapon should be a part of Pact of the Blade, Book of Ancient Secrets should be a part of the Pact of the Tome, and Investment of the Chain Master part of Pact of the Tome (or the Invocations they will become) and I don't think they are.
    The whole buying back of Invocation uses worries me - it's not like we have much to trade, unless we're to be given something like Sorcery Points for the purpose, in which case, yay!
    Finally, so bored of this idea that "Oh! Celestial! Must be all sweetness and light and want to heal!" - Even if this was a Christian setting this wouldn't be the case, but this ISN'T a Christian setting. When I built my Celestial Pact of the Tome Warlock I had to swap out most of the spells to make it fit - which is fine, that's how the game works...but how about some imagination so I don't always have to Homebrew my characters, even though I'm not going out of the bounds of the original remit?
    My husband thought I might be bothered that as a Hexblade (currently) I wouldn't get Weapon Mastery, but I'm cool with that - I'm happy to train and take feats to improve my fighting, maybe take a dip into Fighter - Hexblade already gets a lot, Weapon Mastery is intended to help non-magical martials gain parity - it's all good.

      I was thinking the same. There are several builds that depend on the Pact Boon, and moving that to 1st Level may mean that some of them don't need as many levels in Warlock. My instinct is that the extra cantrips that come with Pact of the Tome will be very tempting. If the playtest changes hold a Whispers Bard stacking Psychic Blades with Shillelagh and Truestrike will be quite powerful. Adding a couple of levels of Paladin to that might be a little much...

    Do you think the wizard will be any good? I thought the create magic was very iconic to the wizard but they seem to not want to put that in. With the loss of some wizard abilities going to only sorcerer in 2014 and the terrible subclasses I felt the wizard just wasn't as interesting and now with warlock changes and probably sorcerer changes i feel the wizard is going to need a lot more than just" well it has 5 more spells that it can have than sorcerer". The wizard subclasses either felt like they didn't do anything or just didn't fulfill any theme/fantasy very well. Especially with concentration in the mix there is no point to have more spells you could cast when you cant because you are concentrating. Having 80% of your spell list behind a concentration wall is ridiculous. When i make a wizard i just disable concentration spells pick out the ones I want then I look at the rest of the spell list and I'm like ,ok which 2-3 spells do I want from here. This made it feel like we went from having 100+ spells to like 15. If the wizard doesn't get massive changes they will just be a sorcerer without class features...

    I am hearing so many abilities sound good, however unless they change how temp hit points stack(or don’t); having everyone get or give temp hp just reduces value of them. Like casting aid on a shape shifted Druid is worthless. Or shape shifting if someone gave temps, “lose” some of the benifit of shifting.
    Already having issues in 2014 with my hobgoblin help, with the artificer temp hit points, add an inspiring leader, Druid, cleric, and warlock, all there abilities become much much less useful, as can only benefit from one. Having an ability is cool, but never having it really help feels worse then not having it.
    In away seems like advantage will be the same, so easy to get it devalues it, but really concerned with temp hit points.

    (For anyone wondering, Fiendish Vigor, Armour of Agathys, Protection from Evil and Good, Blur, etc. are all useful tools for making your Warlock more survivable, and you can use Booming Blade, Spirit Shroud, and potentially some other Eldritch Blast + pulling shenanigans to substitute taunt effects. Not overly amazing in power, but certainly the constant Temps from Fiendish Vigor every turn can keep you alive if you need it.)
