Over the years I had collected a zillion calling cards. It finally dawned on me a couple of weeks ago that they were a great size for little journal cards. Most are 2 x 3. The backs are mostly nice colors and textures and sometimes there are pictures on the front that I incorporated into the decorating scheme. It turned into a whole bunch of cards that I was very happy with.
I bet your collection is lovely, Susan. What a great way to transform them into sweet journal cards. And the natural coloring on the old paper just can't be imitated. Calling cards also make great tuck spots and page tabs. They will be a pretty addition to the journals you make. TFW! 💖
That is a brilliant idea! Years ago I bought 500 business cards from a company but the color was way off. They printed new cards and told me to keep the misprints. I now have to find that box of "rejects"! Imagine the fun I'm going to have!
Just came across your channel and enjoyed this video! Your recipe cards look like ones I got years ago and finally took to the thrift store about six years ago, never occurred to me to reuse them. Thankfully. I hoard enough junk paper as it is!! I thought this past weekend how useful our printed church programs would be! They changed recently to double-sided half sheets of light card. I went around the pews picking up programs people left. Of course, I picked up trash and straightened the hymnals and Bibles as I went because that’s how I do things. (Hope the deacons were grateful I did their job!!) I have more trouble with glue than anything else in crafting-any kind of crafting. But I’ve had my Creative Memories corner rounder for more than 20 years, and it’s still doing well! Oh, my mother (BS in home Economics) always said to have the right needles for sewing, especially with your machine. If you sew on paper, only use those needles for paper and be prepared to get new (cheap) ones often. That’s just like we don’t use our fabric scissors for paper, right?!!
You are the only person I have heard say: The only thing you’re not suppose to sew on is paper! I cracked up because I was taught the exact same thing!!!! (But no one has said that, lol). Ha/ha, as a matter of fact when I started my junk journal journey, I rarely sewed paper as I was freaked out if I did it would damage the machine that I had waited years to have. To combat the anxiety I bought a nice inexpensive machine that I can sew all the paper I want. Just cleaning it more often would have been fine but I was too old school. Lol vintage me! Thank you for the wonderful tutorial!
Every time I sew on paper I feel like I'm really pushing the boundaries by being so "naughty". 🤭 The only thing I won't do is use my fabric scissors on paper, no-no. Sounds like you came up with a great solution to your "problem". Thanks for watching, Michelle, and for the chuckle today! 😄👍💖
The same ones who told me this also had us sew lines (straight, curved, zigzagged, etc.) drawn ON PAPER! LOL! It is because it dulls the needles. Our home ec teacher had a small box of used needles just for the paper practice pieces and the test paper pieces.
I was always told it was bad for the needle would make it to dull for fabric, same with scissors……so don’t use your sewing scissors for paper crafting and change you machine needle if you’ve been sewing paper
Somehow I didn't know I could make tags or journal cards this way! I've always used one piece of whatever, and wrapped it all around the base. I like how you do yours though, by just covering one side with your pretty papers! This way seems so much easier, and leaves the back sides blank sometimes, for journaling. I'm fairly new at this, and happy to learn another way of doing things, so thanks so much for this video!
I do scrapbooking, and journaling in store bought books, but I am new to junk journaling. I don't have a lot of stuff, or a lot of money, so I'm looking for ways to do this on the cheap, but make it awesome. Thank you for all the great advice.
From what I've heard, the junk journal movement was a response to scrapbooking. It was intended to give people a way to create pretty projects without having to spend a ton of money. I think that's what I enjoy most about making junk journals - making something useful and pretty from ordinary inexpensive supplies. It appeals to my frugal heart, LOL. I'm glad I could give you a few ideas. I have another video on where to find free journal supplies that may give you a few more ideas... Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/QpERO15Da8c/видео.html TFW, Suzanne! 💖
The best advise I heard from many instructors is: use what you have. Make your sprays, make gesso, use all paper you already have, such as used printer papers, cereal boxes to make journal covers, scraps of paper & ribbon to make ephemra. Mark makers can be lids & caps from small medicine or toothpaste. Plastic comb, bubble wrap or anything with a design. Search on-line how to make many things you can use. Start simple & cheaply & watch videos that don't use a lot of purchased items. I avoid those since it can make you think you need all that purchased stuff, but you don't. Now that I have made made 2 journals, I do have a lot of stamps and bought EVERY one at a thrift store---usually a bag for & $3.00.
That is expert advice. Thank you for sharing it with us, Marilyn. It makes sense and (to me) feels so much more enjoyable to use up what is already available for supplies. Apply a little imagination and creativity and... voila - a masterpiece is born! TFS! 💖
First time seeing you and I have to tell you what an inspiration you are! I will be following you. Love that you break these steps down in journaling. I am a newbie to junk journaling and there's just something about it that is so therapeutic. Makes me want to jump into my papers!
That is exactly how I feel - like jumping into the papers! Thank you for your comment. I can't tell you how much it made my day to know that you enjoyed the video and my channel. Welcome to the wonderful world of junk journaling! I find it to be therapeutic too, especially for my perfectionistic tendencies. 💖
First of all, enjoyed your video in more ways than one! The glue stick you use is the only one I have found that really works. Now a "stupid" question, what in the world is the real difference between a journal card and a tag? 👍👏🤔🏷️
Not at all, I appreciate you asking the question! Truthfully, the decision to call something a tag or a journal card is somewhat arbitrary (at least I think so). The main differences in my eyes are the size and whether or not the piece has a topper on it. The tags seem to range in size from very tiny to jumbo and usually have a tag-like shape to them. Then a topper or pull of some sort is added to the top. Sometimes the shape around the top of the tag is a little more decorative and there are many punches on the market that help achieve the pretty shape. That what makes it seem like a tag to me. The journal cards are generally a little bit larger sized, such as 3x4", 4x6" or 5x7". They can be larger or smaller than these dimensions, but usually are just a rectangle or square shape. Often you see the corners have been rounded on them. And they have space to write on the back (but then again, so do the tags). I think of tags as longer and skinnier with a topper or the corners cut to look like a tag while jc's usually are a little bit wider rectangles/squares with no topper. This is a long answer, but I hope it helped clarify the differences. The main thing is whatever you choose to call the item, that's what it is. The definitions are a bit loose. 🤗💖
Try flipping the punch around and then punch.. This way you know for sure that the papers are aligned properly to punch Also you can see while punching if the pressure is enough etc
Suzanne 7225, I am new also. Been watching all the videos I can. I do have an advantage, I save everything, always think I can do something some time. Just organizing it. Meantime I pick up or ask for item that I think I can use, such as wrapping for subs, paper bags for bagels, placemats. Items everywhere. Good luck with your new hobby.
Hi Annie, thanks so much for subbing! One of the best things about making junk journals is that you can find supplies just about everywhere. I think that makes it so fun! TFW!
What am I doing today? I'm watching videos and taking notes. I'm new to journaling and looking to improve. I've finished 1 journal so far and am excited to learn and develop different techniques.
It's such a fun hobby because you can incorporate any craft you already enjoy into the journal making process. I like stamping and fabrics so mine have those items in them. Others like to paint, or do mixed media and their journals reflect that. Have fun with it! I'm delighted you found my video today. Thanks for watching and commenting. 💖
It's my first time on your channel. You're thorough & your voice is steady, which I enjoy! Note, when you have less than half of a bottle of glue, it's easier to just lay it down horizontally on the table instead of straight up. The amount of glue is better to where crafters aren't as frustrated by the lack of glue. Hope this is handy!
You always have such good and useful ideas Marci! That's one reason I like your channel. You don't make everything so complicated and your instructions are very good and easy to understand. I enjoyed this today. I have so much stuff like this and you gave me some inspiration for some things to do this summer after all of the holiday cards are done. Scotch Create glue sticks work well. They don't dry up...at least not in my house. Some people like UHU or the purple glue ones that you can get at Target.
Thank you, Kathleen. Yep, I'm a simple gal and don't like to make everything complicated when it doesn't need to be. I guess you could say that I'm efficient. 😆 I hope you give this project a try. It's a nice project for when you want to be a little creative but don't want to make a big mess. Thank you for your kind comments and for watching! 💖
Wow! Love this video! You covered the exact areas I struggle with🙃 Thank you✂️👍 I can’t remember the word you used for the weather but that sounds awful. I’m located in WNY and we are definitely experiencing the blahest of blah times here too!
It is called an "inversion" and they are the worst, being trapped under an icy cloud layer while a few miles away in the hills, the skies are sunny and it's warmer. I"m so glad the video was helpful. I appreciate you watching and your comments. 🥰
Thank you, Belinda. I wish you the best of success with your ephemera business. It's a great way to be creative and help others who perhaps don't have time, etc to make their own.
It’s a great idea to make a bunch of bases. I should do that, let me put it on my list…now where is that list… Love the quote. I do quit trying, often times I feel like I don’t have the time to put into something if it doesn’t go well at first try. I tried to work on it but I quit! 😂😂 The stew looks delicious! 💕
You're right, sometimes I don't want to take the time to try again. I expect that everything should work out the first time around. I don't know why, but I know I need to stop thinking like that. The stew was really yummy. Hope you find your list.... Thanks for watching! 😋
After you introduced that book I bought and love it and also bought some for others. I’ve been trying to get my creativity back with just building stash too. I need to stop feeling like I need to buy more buttons🤦♀️😂
It's easy to get overrun with buttons, that's for sure. I'm happy to be your sponsor for helping overcome your addiction when you're ready. 😄 Building stash is a great way to jump start your creativity without having to make a big project. I like it for those days when I need to give my brain a refresher. TFW! 🥰
This is a great video with ideas for stash building! It's exactly what I am working on right now☺ I love the idea of making a ton of unembellished bases❣ For people getting started, like me, its a really good place to start
Having some of the basic pieces done in advance - ready to embellish - helps me so much when it comes time to put a journal together. Thanks for watching, I'm glad you found the video helpful. 🥰
I agree, they are the best! And I like that nothing sticks to them since they have a Teflon coating on them. And they never need sharpening! TFW today! 💖
I have more than enough supplies. I just need my creativity to wake up. I had 3 surgeries since August. 2 on my right elbow, which is my dominant arm. I need to get restarted.
Yes, this is a great way to get the creative juices flowing with no pressure. I hope your elbow is healing properly and you have plenty of help around the house during recovery. Being unable to craft is disheartening. I hope you can be back in full crafting mode soon! ✂❤🩹🥰
Hello Marci, hope all is well with you! 🥰 I really need to have one of these sessions and I love all the background papers you used. My problem is that I have to sew everything, I need to get over that. 😂 Thanks for the video and sharing your process, hope you week is going good. Take care of you! 💜
Hate cloomy days me too. Buy a RV and join millions of winter Texans, AZ or Floridians. The RV parks are entertaining and resort like. Not a RV sales person. I have tons of craft equipment set up in my Airstream. Been doing this for 25 years. I enjoyed your video thanks for sharing.
Hi Leslie, thanks for the tip. I used UHU way back in my early scrapbooking days, but switched to other products over time. I should give them another try. TFW! 💖
I've been keeping an eye out for one of the cork backed ones when I go thrifting, but so far no luck. I may have to buy a new one. Thanks for watching, Laura! 💖
I glue on top of a mail order catalogue. Easy to turn the page when it gets sticky. I've been doing a similar project, collaging greeting card tops for scrappy wonky houses. The tiniest scraps used for windows, roof and door. The Fall/Winter stew sounds yummy. New subscriber. Are you in Pacific NW? I'm in Washington State. I swore that after the 114* heatwave last year, I'd never complain about gloomy days again! Ha!
Are those the wonky houses that Natasha at Treasure Books makes? They are super cute! Yes, I'm in SW Idaho which most of the time doesn't feel like the PNW, but N Idaho certainly is. My #1 daughter lives in Vancouver, WA and the temps there got hotter than here at one point last year. Plus the smoke from fires... We had a big heat bubble in June last year, but it never reached 114. Waaaaay too hot, especially for Washington/Oregon. TFW!
I used double-sided tape almost exclusively when I was first making mini albums (before discovering junk journals). Over time I've drifted to using a variety of adhesives. I still prefer the double sided tape for adhering book spines and attaching papers to the inside covers of the journals I make. The tape can sometimes be a little sticky when sliding things in and out of pockets, but I like the certainty that it provides when I want to be sure a journal will hold together long term. TFW, Janet! 💖
I cheat the gold paint along the edges by using a wide tipped gold or silver metallic Sharpie marker, the oil-based kind that needs to be shaken up and primed. After I prime the marker I run the edges of the cardstock along the marker tip. 😉
10 years nothing! Mine come apart in about 2 weeks! I HATE regular glue sticks! I ALSO don’t know how you glue shiny stuff. Those ALSO come apart and I used MOD PODGE! The Local Chapter of the Button Club! Sounds like a great title for a book!
That does sound like a book title! 😂😂 That's so disheartening to have your hard work fall apart right after you've put your heart and soul into creating something wonderful! 😠 I wonder if humidity plays into it at all? Our climate here is fairly dry so I think certain glues work better than others. On the other hand, I think others are too sticky (i.e. Scotch Creates glue sticks). I'm having good success with the Elmers Craft Bond glue sticks and the purple school glue sticks, also by Elmers. I'm fairly certain I didn't use enough glue in those scrapbooks all those years ago. There are so many glues available now, but I am still unsure what to use for glitter cardstock or slick papers. The Beacon glues - Fabritac or Fabrifix - work well on plastics. As I return to scrapbooking, I think I will use more Art Glitter Glue and Fabritac for the bulky, slippery stuff. I used mostly photo mounting squares back in the day because it was the only thing that kept everything stuck to the page. I was in Cozumel a couple of years ago and my watch band fell apart because of the high humidity. It just came unglued! 😩 So I wonder if your climate plays a part in your glue not sticking? Just a thought. I feel for you though, I really do. TFW, Sandra! 🤗💖
Hi Melanie, Welcome to the fun world of junk journals and to my channel! I think I was using Walnut Stain distress ink in this video. Thanks for watching, I'm glad you're here! 💖
So riddle me this does everyone have a stack of journals that they've made and they just need to be decorated or do you make a journal and decorate as you go
I think it depends on the person. I've heard RUclipsrs mention that they typically have several projects going at once. For me, I work better linearly - working on one project at a time until it is finished. The first journals I made, I created everything (ephemera, pockets, etc.) as I went. It took a long time to finish and I was tired of the journal before I got done with it. With this method, I can have ephemera made and just tuck it into a journal and it saves me time on the finishing end. You just need to figure out a process that works for you which happens as you make more and more journals. Hope this was helpful. Thanks for watching and for your good question. I suspect many others have been wondering the same thing. 💖
Thank you so much ❤️ I've made maybe ten journals in a year sometimes I will go week's without touching them but on the days I do I literally have to go from nothing but supplies to what ever it's is I'm doing I wished I had stacks of stuff ready at hand guess I need to have a day where I do nothing except create and then go back and stuff tuck and tag my book
You know, I tried it and it was too sticky for me. I know lots of people use it with great success though. I wondered if it had something to do with my dry climate. 💖
I’ve tried several glue sticks after seeing them used so much online. Quick and easy, but later the tags I made were coming apart. Thumbs down on glue sticks.
I've always said JJ's are 3 seperate hobbies: buying, organizing, and actually using.
That is so true! And I find it's easier to shop than to use it all up. I'm disciplining myself to create more and shop less. TFW! 🥰
And making ephemra to stockpile so it's available to decorate pages. I think that's step #3.
Super ,Danke.liebe Grüsse aus schweden
What a great video! Fun, instructive, and welcoming. After watching it, I was inspired to make my own (small) batch of bases.

I fussy cut from a magazine with my Tim Holtz scissors. They are the best.
I agree, they are the best! And I like that nothing sticks to them since they have a Teflon coating on them. And they never need sharpening! TFW today! 💖
Great video❤
Glad you liked it!!
Hi, I’m new to your channel, love all your ideas. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much, I'm glad you're here! 😊
Hello, I just found your channel today. I liked and subscribed. Enjoyed this video.
Hello and welcome, LInda! I'm glad you found me! 💖
Hello Marci, hope all is well with you! 🥰
I really need to have one of these sessions and I love all the background papers you used. My problem is that I have to sew everything, I need to get over that. 😂 Thanks for the video and sharing your process, hope you week is going good. Take care of you! 💜
I love the look with sewing too, but as you see here, I often switch back and forth. TFW! 🥰
That me i give up too soon if it doesn’t work the first time. Thank you. Im going to charge my way of thinking❤
I have found that if you hold the triple corner punch upside down it works much better. It’s easier to get the corner of the paper lined up.
That's a great tip, Rosemary, thank you! It would make things easier for sure. TFW! 💖
Try UHU glue sticks. They are the best!!
Hi Leslie, thanks for the tip. I used UHU way back in my early scrapbooking days, but switched to other products over time. I should give them another try. TFW! 💖
@@CreatorsCall You're welcome!!! I love them!!
Have you heard Cori's tip of running your gluesticked through a laminator to reactivate it an get a really good stick?
Thanks for sharing this tip, I haven't heard it before. I'm curious to know how she does that. TFW! 💖
Hello. I'm new to your channel. I really like what you're making.😊
Hi Anne, welcome to the channel! I'm so happy you found me and are enjoying it. 💖
It helps to use a metal ruler for tearing.
I've been keeping an eye out for one of the cork backed ones when I go thrifting, but so far no luck. I may have to buy a new one. Thanks for watching, Laura! 💖
What a cheerful video, listening to a faceless pair of hands grumble about weather events. Thanks for the rays of sunshine.🥴
Any time! Glad you enjoyed it and took time to comment on those 64 seconds of this 42 minute video. TFW! 💖

We get inversions in the valley where I live and then the pollution gets really bad too.
They are the worst! I'm glad someone else can commiserate with me. 😊💖
❤❤❤
TFW!
I've watched several wonky house videos, but Natasha's might have used that title. Small world. My niece is a pilot in Vancouver, Wa.
I don’t like using glue. I use sheets of double sided tape. It can be a little expensive but I think it adheres better and goes on smoothly.
That's a great way to do it, thanks for the tip.😀 I have always loved the look of metallic markers! TFW! 💖
Really liked you video, just subscribed!
Yay, thank you and welcome!
That's so disheartening to have your hard work fall apart right after you've put your heart and soul into creating something wonderful!

Hello! Brand new to junk journals and enjoying your videos. What color ink are you using to buff onto the pages? Thank you!
Hi Melanie, Welcome to the fun world of junk journals and to my channel! I think I was using Walnut Stain distress ink in this video. Thanks for watching, I'm glad you're here! 💖
Hi there, I'd love to know who the quote is by. I'm inspired by it
Hi Natasha! The quote is by Moliere, a French actor and playwright from the 1600s. Thank you for watching; I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 🤗💖
That sounds like a great strategy. It does get tiresome to make everything from scratch for every journal. 💖
But the most important question is
"Is your Jesus too small?"
Your dinner sounds very yummy 😋
It was delicious!
We get the opposite in the UK as the air becomes fresh and crispy huh 🥶
Clear fresh air is delightful! TFW! 🥰
Scotch brand is much better!❤
You know, I tried it and it was too sticky for me. I know lots of people use it with great success though. I wondered if it had something to do with my dry climate. 💖
A metal ruler works best, I find.
I'm keeping a look out for one at the thrift stores, but so far no luck.🧐 Thanks for the tip and for watching! 😊💖
I’ve tried several glue sticks after seeing them used so much online. Quick and easy, but later the tags I made were coming apart. Thumbs down on glue sticks.
Yes, it's so hard to find a good one! I use wet glue more often because it's permanent. TFW Rosemary! 💖
Oh I get it. It drives me a little wonkier when they slap a piece of paper down in the middle of a sheet.. eegads what waste, I think,
Exactly! 😆TFW! 💖
It’s a process video, thus the length. Thank you for your suggestions.😃
