  • Kate performs "Them Heavy People" on the 1979 Christmas special.
    Lyrics:
Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me.
Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me.
They arrived at an inconvenient time.
I was hiding in a room in my mind.
They made me look at myself. I saw it well.
I'd shut the people out of my life.
So now I take the opportunities:
Wonderful teachers ready to teach me.
I must work on my mind. For now I realise:
Everyone of us has a heaven inside.
Them heavy people hit me in a soft spot.
    Them heavy people help me.
Them heavy people hit me in a soft spot.
Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me.
They open doorways that I thought were shut for good.
They read me Gurdjieff and Jesu.
They build up my body, break me emotionally.
It's nearly killing me, but what a lovely feeling!
I love the whirling of the dervishes.
I love the beauty of rare innocence.
You don't need no crystal ball,
Don't fall for a magic wand.
We humans got it all, we perform the miracles.
Them heavy people hit me in a soft spot.
    Them heavy people help me.
Them heavy people hit me in a soft spot.
Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me.
Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me.
Rolling the ball, rolling the ball...

A truly original, consistently innovative artist. Perhaps uniquely talented in the history of music. Despite her great gifts as writer & performer being apparent from a teenager, she developed a career of sustained quality, while incorporating innovation in vision & dance. All achieved within the transience of 'pop music' where prolonged success is usually based on replaying a number of once loved hits. Kate just made new hits. Greatest artist .of the 20thC I'd suggest.

I'm going through a really hard time in my life right now, a lot of really severe depression, uncertainty if I should even go on living. I got into listening to Kate Bush recently and great music like this is the only thing really helping me to hold on. I simply can't give up now after hearing her music. So cute and sensual in this performance. Kate's an international treasure, this is by far my favorite version of "Them Heavy People" I've never heard her live with a full group of BG vocalists, this actually sounds live too, it's definitely different than the album version if it wasn't fully live?
It's so funny, at this tender age, she had to play the ingenue on stage and in interviews, yet she was 100% fully in control of her image, songs, albums and everything in her output by this point. Yet she still managed to come off so authentically, incredibly nice, humble and sweet in every public appearance and clip. That alone is an amazing achievement for the era, considering how cutthroat the music business was and is. She really is one of a kind, there will never be anyone even remotely like her.

What I love about her is her respect for men and the beauty she finds in their bodies. Being a man, I get a bit tired of songs that demean men. I have never felt that from Kate.
I came to her by chance. I was really into female voices at the time and I had to pick between Amy Grant and Kate Bush as to which of their CD's I would buy. I did not know either. I picked Kate's Whole Story, which I did not know was her greatest hits. Right when I heard Wuthering Heights, I was blown away. I went back and bought everything she put out, even a bootleg called Shrubberies of just her at the piano and really young. I thought all of my friends would hear the brilliance ... they did not like her. Needless to say, it warms my heart when I read all of the wonderful comments about her. Although, many people claim she is a female Bowie; I see her more as a female Peter Gabrial. Actually, she is really in a category all by herself. A wonderful, modest, creative, fearless, and beautiful artist. When I first heard Tori Amos, I could see other women performers (and men) were listening.

AfterBabooshka, she pushed back against being objectified. She told the industry to bug off with her, sexualizing her. After that, she wore flattering clothing in her videos and on the BBC, but never anything very revealing. She only did things her way.

One of the most amazing thing about this performance is that it's obviously not lip syncing.

Nice sarcasm! Almost every pop TV performance was lip synched back then.
