  • "When we won the medal, we were on top of the world. Didn’t know how to even express ourselves, having won the double gold medal. For the last 100 years, India hadn’t even won a single gold. We are proud to be playing for India," Indian chess player Vantika Agarwal on country's double gold medal at Olympiad 2024.

Interviewer is out of line when she says that Vantika "saved the day." That puts down the other players on the team. Vantika drew her game in round 8 against Poland when she had a clear win because of a slip-up 3 or 4 moves from the ending. But nobody should be diminishing her achievement because of that. Similarly for the other players -- even the "fifth board" did her job, which was just as essential -- providing a rest for her teammate, and playing her game to her absolute best. Everyone on the team pulled the juggernaut.

exactly...183 country competed..biggest event of any sport..winning Gold in Chess Olympiad is huge..thats why even champion side like Soviet/Russia got only 12 Gold double in 45 Olympiad till date despite being the best for such a long time..i would like to add the Thomas Cup win right up there too
